2024 TBR Pile of Good Intentions
Tumblr media
(crossposted to Patreon)
This year’s TBR pile looks very much like last year’s (hence the reused banner image) but last year was also a shitshow so I’m giving myself a do-over. Although looking back, I did actually manage to read two (2) of the books on last year’s list! I even wrote about How to Live Like a Monk for my patrons! The other one was Mexican Gothic… Y’know, I should really write about Mexican Gothic…
Lion’s Paw Reads: (aka books I’m planning to do patron content about)
Orlando, by Virginia Woolf
A Haunted History of Invisible Women: True Stories of America’s Ghosts, by Leanna Renee Hieber and Andrea Janes
The Haunting of Alma Fielding, by Kate Summerscale
The Octagon House: A Home for All, by Orson Squire Fowler
Other Reads (Fiction):
Our Wives Under the Sea, by Julia Armfield
The Ladies of Grace Adieu and Other Stories, by Susana Clarke
Radiance, by Catherynne M. Valente
Gideon the Ninth, by Tamsin Muir
Piranesi, by Susanna Clarke
The City We Became, by N.K. Jemison
Nothing but Blackened Teeth, by Cassandra Khaw
The Story of Silence, Alex Myers
A Psalm for the Wild-Built, by Becky Chambers
Viriconium, by M. John Harrison
Queer Little Nightmares: An Anthology of Monstrous Fiction and Poetry, Edited by David Ly & Daniel Zomparelli
What Moves the Dead, by T. Kingfisher *I actually finished this last week!
Phantastes: A Faerie Romance, by George MacDonald
Other Reads (Non-Fiction):
City of Sin, by Catherine Arnold
The Mutual Admiration Society, by Mo Moulton
Monster, She Wrote, by Lisa Kröger and Melanie R. Anderson
The Gilded Edge, by Catherine Prendergast
Dickensland, by Lee Jackson
I might also do posts on some of these other books, provided I get to/through them. If you’re at all interested in my thoughts on this assemblage of horror, fantasy, scifi, and very niche historical non-fiction, I hope you’ll consider subscribing and telling me what else I should be reading!

Wait, Marsha was friends with Mick Taylor? And if it's known ,what Marsha thought about other jaggers gfs? And what's your opinion on his girlfriends, wives?
Yes! Mick Taylor was Marsha Hunt's friend first. He was a young guitarist who was in the blues/rock band, John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers in the mid-1960s. When Mick Jagger told Marsha that he was going to fire the Rolling Stones guitarist, Brian Jones, Marsha got Mick Taylor as a replacement. I mean, she saved his ass.
[That's Mick Taylor on the far left and John Mayall on the far right.]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also, I'm not too sure what she thought of the other women in Mick's life or if she really cared to be honest. She had her own problems to worry about. I know she and Jerry Hall get along great, they especially got close after Marsha was diagnosed with breast cancer. Marianne Faithfull has always said really kind things about Marsha (I'll actually get into that later), and Marsha's also friends with P.P. Arnold and Claudia Lennear which shocked me. I mean, Marsha's cool,, she's easy to get a long with. But I personally cannot stand Bianca Jagger, Jerry Hall is alright even though she married a fucking Murdoch, Luciana is a thirsty hoe, and Mick's "child bride" Melanie...chile! 🤦🏾‍♀️ Have you ever heard her talk? It's like nails on a chalkboard...I swear.

How to Survive a Horror Story | Mallory Arnold | Publishing 2025 | ARC
Tumblr media
When legendary horror author Mortimer Queen passes, a group of writers find themselves invited to his law will and testament reading expecting a piece of his massive fortune. Each have their own unique connection to the literary icon, some known, some soon to be discovered, and they've been waiting for their chance to step into the author's shoes for some time.
Instead, they arrive at his grand manor and are invited to play a game. The rules are simple, solve the riddle and progress to the next room. If they don't, the manor will take one of them for itself.
You see, the Queen estate was built on the bones of Mortimer's family, and like any true horror story, the house is still very, very hungry.
Seven individuals enter into famed horror author Mortimer Queen's Vermont mansion, only to be told that only one of them would be allowed out alive. After being invited to a reading of his will, Melanie Brown, Scott Clay, Buck Grimm, Winnie Roach, Petey Marsh, Chester Plumage and Crystal Flowers arrive in Vermont excited to hear about the reading. Everyone except Melanie understands why they were called there. Each of them had a personal relationship with Mortimer in some way: Scott and Mortimer had been competition against each other, their stories having been released on the same day; Buck had been Mortimer's assistant before his own novel had been published; Winnie was Mortimer's neighbor while living in LA; Petey had met Mortimer under strange circumstances; Chester had briefly met and spoken with Mortimer's young teenage niece, as she had been a fan of Chester's writing and lastly, Crystal and Mortimer had been having a three-years long affair.
Melanie, for all intents and purposes, didn't deserve to be invited but decided to attend to give meaning to her life. She hasn't been published, receiving rejection after rejection for her novels.
They meet Gia, the property's groundskeeper, and during a particularly interesting dinner, they learn that they had been left nothing in the will other than a game. The seven of them will have to play, given only one hour to figure out a riddle to move onto the next room. The mansion itself is a sentient being, taking one person each hour for a feeding in order for the house to continue on, as it had for centuries in the Queen family.
The quickly begin, and the reasoning behind each of their reasons for being invited are discovered: Petey had stolen an unpublished manuscript from Mortimer, having it published under his name and it was discovered. Winnie had spread a deadly rumor about him beating his wife, Liotta and killing her, as opposed to her pancreatic cancer being the one to take her out; Buck, who had been given the opportunity for his book to be published shortly after Mortimer bought 66% of the publishing company, blackmailed Mortimer into signing the contract in order for his book to be published, claiming he would tell Liotta of his indiscretions with Crystal; Chester, and the young niece that he had spoken with, had an argument that led to the young girl, named Mary, to fling herself off of the roof of the hotel where Chester had been staying, as he explcitily told her to jump off the roof to her death; Scott had blackmailed Mortimer's PR person into disrupting Mortimer's new book being released, so his would be the more popular of the two which ultimately ended up being true; and finally Crystal, who in the hope of spending more time together, began taking care of Liotta in their home, up until Liotta began to get better. After Liotta explained that her services were no longer needed, Crystal poisoned her tea with weed killer and Liotta died, the explanation being that it was her cancer that had returned.
While the others are slowly killed off and fed to the mansion, Buck and Melanie make it to the attic. Mortimer explains that if there are more than one of them in the attic, they would have to kill the other in order to gain access to the outside world. They begin to make preparations to remain in the attic until one or both of them dies, not wanting to murder the other, they snack on a pastry with walnuts in it, of which Buck begins to have an allergic reaction. When the ladder descends from the roof, Melanie escapes and is allowed onto the ground with the help of Gia. Instead of running to safety, she finds Buck's EpiPen and rescues him, giving him another chance at life and the two of them escape.
Within the woods on the property, they find a cabin, and inside is the hidden information that tells Melanie that Mortimer had been telling the truth about the six of them. Understandably angry, she locks Buck in the basement of the attic with the trap door.
Two years later, Melanie's own novel is going to be published, as was promised by Mortimer when she agreed to help him expose those that had been present that day. But, with the six haunting her, she decides that this book will be her first and last.

Baby names and why I didn't use them
Melanie: I love Melanie Wilkes with the fire of a thousand suns but my SIL has a similar name and she despises me
Regina: Our last name sounds too much like George
Clara: this one was actually pretty upsetting because it's my great-grandmother's name. My half-brother (not related to her) used it and then his cousin used Claire. I know I still technically could have used it but it would have felt really weird.
Peter: I was obsessed with Petyr Baelish in college and my friends would have thought I named my baby after him. No I do not still like that character.
Rose, Mark, etc: I like these names in theory but in reality I do not like one-syllable names
Isabel: I loved this name since childhood but Twilight made its variants too popular
Nicholas: istg everyone in our community is named Nicholas, I have no idea who anyone means when they refer to "Nick" and I'm not adding to the problem
Gianna: everyone I've met in America pronounces this incorrectly and I get "corrected" when I pronounce it correctly (when referring to an Italian historical figure)
Simeon: simian
Benedict: my husband thinks of Benedict Arnold
John: my husband who only likes super classic names thinks this one is too boring, therefore depriving me of a lifetime of announcing dramatically, "HIS NAME IS JOHN."

Donald Day Jr, arrested in connection with Wieambilla terror attack, seeks to have charges dismissed
By Melanie Vujkovic and Emilie Gramenz, Thu 28 Dec 2023 at 10:44am
Tumblr media
Donald Day Jr, 58, was arrested in Arizona in early December.(Supplied)
A US man connected to religious extremists who killed three people in Queensland's Western Downs last year is seeking to have charges against him dismissed.
Constables Rachel McCrow and Matthew Arnold, and neighbour Alan Dare, were killed on December 12, 2022 in what police have described as a religiously-motivated terrorist attack committed by Stacey, Gareth and Nathaniel Train.
Donald Day Jr, who was an online associate of the perpetrators for more than two years was arrested in Arizona several weeks ago and charged with two counts of making threats.
One relates to inciting violence online, and centres on a YouTube video that Mr Day posted on December 16 - four days after the shooting - where he is alleged to have threatened law enforcement officials.

Constables Rachel McCrow and Matthew Arnold and the Trains' neighbour Alan Dare were killed on December 12.(Supplied)
He is also alleged to have made an unrelated threat against the head of the World Health Organization.
In a motion filed with the US District Court in Arizona, Mr Day's defence asked that the charges be dismissed on the basis that they were free speech, and not a serious expression of an intent to commit violence.
"The statements alleged in the indictment were not statements of intent to harm a 'person' as required under the statute," the motion said.
"Furthermore, the statements are not a 'serious expression of an intent to commit an unlawful act of violence' and are therefore protected by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.
"For these reasons, both counts of the indictment must be dismissed as insufficient."
Mr Day is set to face trial in February and remains in custody in Arizona.
Online activity a key part of Wieambilla investigation
Mr Day was arrested near Heber-Overgaard, a small and remote community several hours drive north-east of Phoenix in early December.
Speaking at a joint press conference with the FBI, Queensland Police Assistant Commissioner Cheryl Scanlon said there was evidence the man and the Trains commented on one another's YouTube videos.
"Between May 2021 and December 2022, the man repeatedly sent messages containing Christian end-of-days ideology to Gareth, and then later to Stacey," she said.
Police said the Trains subscribed to a broad Christian fundamentalist belief system known as premillennialism.
Their online activity has been a key part of the investigation.
