So, I've not posted anything in years. But I am alive and well, thanks for asking :) Merry Christmas to those who celebrate! I recently rewatched Home Alone and have been thinking about my favorite blonde home security system's sorting. See TLDR below if you want a summary.

Kevin starts the movie as a very immature Snake primary. He wants what he wants-- a plain cheese pizza and a room to himself-- and doesn't seem overly concerned with the feelings of others. When he wakes up and discovers his entire family has disappeared, his first response is jubilation. I personally think that a Badger primary would have been pretty disturbed by this sudden lack of community, and a Bird would have questioned a bit more exactly what happened. Kevin, as a Snake primary, goes about living his best life. He jumps on the bed, raids his brother's room, eats a massive ice cream sundae, and watches the movie he was excluded from viewing.

The more time he spends alone, though, the more he realizes that he loves and misses his people. He sleeps with the family picture under his pillow. When making his request to Santa, he says, "I just want my family back. No toys, no presents, nothing but Peter, Kate, Buzz, Megan, Linnie, and Jeff. And my Aunt and my cousins. And, if he has time, my Uncle Frank." Frank, it seems, hasn't made it into Kevin's tiered Snake primary loyalty system.

Another hint at his primary is his conversation with Old Man Marley. He says, "I don't care how mad I was, I'd talk to my dad. Especially around the holidays." His dad is important than being right in whatever disagreement separated Marley and his son. I think a Lion wouldn't have that same sentiment, even if they missed their parent.

Lastly, after he runs home from that chat with Marley at the church, Kevin says, "This is my house. I have to defend it." What makes it worth defending is that it's his.

I think that Kevin has an impressive Bird secondary, though an argument could be made for Snake. The way I see it, Kevin is a planner. In his post-shower monologue, he lists all the things he's done til that point, and then discusses what he plans to do later in the day. He makes grocery lists and clips coupons. He draws up a master plan for the defense of his house, using tools that he's collected up to that point in the movie (micro machines, Christmas ornaments, etc.). He utilizes the mannequins in the basement for the fake Christmas party.

While he's pretty good at pivoting, it doesn't seem to be where he's at his best. At the grocery store, he manages to avoid the cashier's questions (Actor Bird?), but he doesn't appear to take any pleasure in being sly. He uses the movie the trick Marv, but it leads to further suspicion from Harry, which spells trouble for Kevin. When he's caught at the end, he doesn't try to run or talk his way out of it-- he's just stunned. His plan, which had been going so well, failed! Thankfully, his Snake primary saves the day. The connection he forged with Old Man Marley pays off. (The ending scene where he and Marley wave at each other always makes me cry.)

TL;DR

Kevin McCallister is a Snake primary who is alone in his inner circle in the beginning, but realizes how much his family means to him and brings them into his value system. His Snakey connection with Old Man Marley saves him in the end. His Bird secondary enjoys laying plans, clipping coupons, and making lists. He can pivot when he needs to, but that's not the first tool that falls to his hand.

Home Alone is a 1990 film written and produced by John Hughes and directed by Chris Columbus.

Home Alone premiered in Chicago on November 10, 1990 and was released in U.S. theaters on November 16. The film grossed $476.7 million worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing live-action comedy until the release of The Hangover Part II (2011), and made child actor Macaulay Culkin a celebrity. Furthermore, it was the second highest-grossing film of 1990, behind Ghost. It was nominated for two Golden Globes for Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy and Best Actor in a Motion Picture for Culkin. A sequel, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, was released in 1992.

Chicago, Illinois. The McCallister family, made up of the spouses Peter and Kate and their children Buzz, Jeff, Megan, Linnie and Kevin (the youngest, but often resented and ridiculed by everyone), is about to leave for Paris to spend the Christmas holidays from Peter's brother Rob, married to Georgette and father of Steffan and twins. The evening before departure they are joined by Frank, another brother of Peter, who lives in Ohio with his wife Leslie and their children Tracy, Sondra, Brooke and Fuller. Heather and Rob, Rob's children who remained in the United States, who want to reunite with their families for the Christmas holidays, will also leave with them. During the family dinner before departure, Kevin has a brief scuffle with his older brother Buzz, guilty of having eaten all his cheese pizza that he had ordered. That same night, a powerful gust of wind causes a tree branch to break and fall onto electricity wires, deactivating the alarm clocks and causing a blackout.

In the confusion created to arrive at the airport in time, no one notices the absence of Kevin, still asleep in the attic, who is later mistaken by his cousin Heather for a neighbor child who has come to say goodbye to the family. Taking advantage of the absence of his family, the child decides to let off steam, doing everything he had always been forbidden to do: jumping on his parents' bed, eating junk food, rummaging through Buzz's things and watching gangster films.

Meanwhile, Kevin discovers that the neighborhood where he lives has been targeted by Harry Lime and Marv Merchants, a couple of thieves who are taking advantage of the holiday period to raid homes, after the former, disguised as a policeman, pretends to an inspection and getting as much information as possible from the owners. The two criminals usually plug the drains and leave the taps open, causing flooding in the houses they rob as a sort of "signature", for which they are nicknamed "Wet Bandits". Meanwhile, after landing in Paris, Kate chooses to stay at the airport in the hope that a seat will open up on a flight so she can return to the United States immediately, while Peter goes to his brother Rob with the rest of his relatives to let their children rest. The days pass and Kevin begins to become familiar with the domestic environment: he goes shopping, does the laundry and also prepares the Christmas tree.

Meanwhile, om Christmas Eve, Harry and Marv finally realize that the boy is alone and want to break into the house that same evening, at 9:00 pm. In the meantime, Kate, having managed to leave, stops first in Dallas and then in Scranton, where, however, she is unable to find a seat on any flight to Chicago.

An essay to explain my deep, meandering thoughts...

Hi, I'm Megan. And I'm a stats freak. And a history and politics nerd. Here is the method to my madness, and my in-depth explanation for my sources of inspiration for the Two Worlds Apart universe (and its many branches). And the importance of quality over quantity, or something like that. Stats Stuff: Okay, roughly 1 in 10 people are LGB (as of 2011). 2 out of 9 goes over that percentage (ten percent versus twenty-two percent) by a bit. Hallie wasn't initially intended to be in the mix, okay? And I didn't include too many kids, so it wasn't overwhelming. And only some of them are main characters, so it's even less overwhelming.

Roughly 1 in 200 people, as of the 2020 US Census, are nonbinary or trans. Considering most of my series occurs decades back, when it was far more firmly discouraged to come out as nonbinary or trans, it would probably be much rarer. So, LGB people are far more common, and that's what I chose to focus on.

And as for diversity, it's all about location, location, location. Most parts of Wisconsin, sans Milwaukee (mostly, and I think Sheboygan, if I can recall correctly), are super, super white. So when my stories take place in Point Place, or anywhere other than Milwaukee (mostly), the vast majority of the characters are going to be white. I'm not being racist or anything, it's just the stats. Wisconsin was 95% white in 1980, and is 85% white today.

But Chicago's different. It would be downright foolish to (nearly) solely have white characters. Unless you're in the super ritzy suburbs (think the McCallister house in Home Alone), racial and ethnic diversity is a requirement. It varies from neighborhood to neighborhood, obviously. But diversity is the linchpin of Chicago. And beyond its rampant corruption and fucked up infrastructure (*transportation* cough), racism (past and present) is the source of many of its problems. Police brutality, education, some other infrastructure issues, etc.

And wealth disparities! Gah, Chicago is such a goddamn segregated city, not only in terms of race (which holy crap, it is). The north side's typically whiter and richer, and the south side's typically darker and poorer. All of which inspired Two Worlds Apart, and my political frustrations at large. Both economic and social.

And segregation is not only deep in the past, like Jim Crow, or in faraway lands. Like South Africa (or *cough* Israel *cough*). It's still here, and you can find countless examples, including in my own life. Personal Stuff: Okay, I went to university in Albany, New York (which I kind of described a couple of nights ago; it was disheartening, to say the least). And it's the closest metropolitan area to me. Many of my paternal relatives have firm ties to Albany, and in past, were insanely well off. Some of my paternal ancestors held vast swaths of land which would be worth millions today. In what is still firmly the white area. Western Ave.

Western Ave is mostly well-off and white, as are the suburbs. And since the inner city schools suck, white flight is super common. Hell, I have two examples in my family. On both sides of the family tree.

But the suburban schools, all roughly surrounding Albany, are the top schools in the Capital Region. Straight up. Whereas Albany's inner-city schools are the worst schools in the region. Henry Johnson Blvd (seriously, look up more about him), for the most part, is black. And poorer.

So Albany was also my inspiration for Two Worlds Apart. Disparities are everywhere, not only in America, but around the world. Even if we're working towards a better future (eh, that's debatable), the past (and so often, the present) leaves its nasty mark. Character Developments, The Main Six: 1. Eric has an enlightening experience in apartheid South Africa. He realizes he's privileged, and wants to help others. He uses this experience to help others at home (the South Side of Chicago, mostly). And make a change. He hopes that he can leave a mark, and change the world for the better. One step at a time.

2. Donna gets out of her late '70s rut and instead gets involved in political journalism, which roughly aligns with her political awakening (which I also had around the same age, so there's more personal stuff), beyond just feminism and other social issues, works hand and hand with Eric's profession. So they work together. To try to create a better world. One that doesn't suck.

3. Jackie finds immense success, because season 8 treated her like shit. And she deserves it, okay? She finds so much success with Wake Up, Wisconsin in Milwaukee, and Good Morning, Chicago in Chicago. Eric and Donna use her show as a platform and a springboard for their project(s), and Jackie's more than willing. Even if it creates new enemies.

4. Hyde gets his head out of his ass. He's better than Point Place, and he needs to earn Jackie's trust again. He owns the two Grooves in Milwaukee, and later, in Chicago. He uses those locations as his rebellious headquarters, and as solid hang-out spots. And as the digital age dawns, he realizes he needs to switch gears. Or his business will become obsolete.

5. Fez is in a rut for awhile. The writers degraded his character from season five onward, and that's a hard rut to get out of. So he occupies himself with Laurie, a massive failure of a relationship. And then his aerobics/dance studio, Rhonda, and a certain realization. He's bi, and he has to reckon with that.
