I've been hit by a sudden urge to go to the cinema, so I'm turning to beloved Tumblr circle for answers:
Is Megalopolis (2024) fun bad or just bad bad?

This year for movies has been incredibly weird. So far, the movies I expected to be good (Megalopolis, Cuckoo, Trap) ended up being either flops or disappointments. Meanwhile, the movies I expected to crash and burn (Twisters, Speak No Evil, Alien Romulus) turned out to be pretty good.
What the heck is happening. I think taking the bar exam ruined my movie senses lol.

I liked the part with the boner.
The first 45 minutes of Megalopolis were simply bad. After that it's like it gave up even trying to be a coherent movie. Way too many characters spouting embarrassingly bad dialogue, editing befitting a made-for-tv movie, and a barely existent plot disguised as a deep philosophical treatise. Whatever the hell this movie set out to say or accomplish, it failed.
By the time it got to the combination chariot race / pledge drive supporting the concept of the virginal purity of a random pop star, it became difficult to believe this was a work of sincerity, and not just an elaborate hoax. Also, if everyone believed she was sixteen years old, why the fuck were they buying chastity belt themed panties with her face printed on the crotch?
I love that the central conflict of the movie was that three groups were vying for power, but I have absolutely no idea what two of them stood for. The mayor wanted to maintain the status quo, but they never adequately explained what the purpose of megalopolis was. Shia LaBeouf's alt-right goon squad was even more vague, and their red baseball caps literally saying Make Rome Great Again was insanely stupid.
I can't even describe how little sense anything in this movie made. All the dialogue between the "intellectuals" was meaningless nonsense and context-less literature quotes. At one point Adam Driver recited almost all of Hamlet's fourth soliloquy, for no apparent reason. The movie ended with a re-written US Pledge of Allegiance about looking after humanity and "all the species that we protect"?
I haven't even mentioned the fact that Adam Driver could control time with unexplained magic powers, but it was completely irrelevant anyway. He might have used it to save himself from a child assassin, but if he did, it's unclear how. He then gave a speech that was apparently so effective it ended every conflict in the city, convinced all his enemies to adore him, and won unanimous support for his stupid glowing mushroom city with Jetsons-esque travelators.
Truly baffling. An utter failure in both concept and execution.
