Jolie’s thoughts on Silver Blaze (Sherlock & Co. podcast) Parts 1 & 2

… because I can already tell that this will get too long if I wait for parts 3 & 4 to drop…

I know Joel has said in several places that this case is his favourite ACD story, so expectations are high… and not being disappointed so far!

I already loved this one at 3 minutes in, with the opening montage of part 1 being totally over the top, mega blockbuster crime of the century style, and then the next thing we get is Sherlock practising the clippity-clop thing and looking for a new home for 327 ants.

Sherlock being a train geek (of course he is) and going on about the ghost trains just after John went on about the creepy Dartmoor legends got me, too. In my book, Silver Blaze has never had a gothic horror vibe to it, but it may well have now! Let’s see how that aspect will develop.

Other details I loved:

John‘s mum: "He‘s a very sensitive boy and you need to respect that." - "He’s not a boy, he’s a man… who plays with ants."

John and Mariana pushing Sherlock into the case by threatening him with a party, and John being a gleefully cackling little bugger about it when it works.

"Just trying to understand how your brain works." - "Yeah, you and me both, mate."

Sherlock giving us a whole paragraph straight out of ACD (the "plethora" bit) - I love how well it always works in contrast with how everyone else in this universe talks.

The dodgy SD card, which - I hereby predict - will turn out to be more than a comedy element as the case progresses.

Sherlock deducing the entry code for the cottage, we love to see that kind of stuff, don’t we.

"We’ve got a horse to find. Giddy up."- Love it when Sherlock speaks ordinary colloquial modern English like a foreign language.

"You are a child, a giant crime-solving child!" - Sherlock Holmes in a nutshell.

"I’ve done the washing up - he said, pausing for a thank you - " - "Thank you."

Oh and scrolling on our phone to the point of existential crisis till we pass out is so how we all fall asleep these days, isn’t it. Jonk Watson, the true Everyman for the 21st century.

And then we get feeeeels, too!

Starting with "Talk to me, John." - 🥹🥹🥹 The incredible intimacy of that little moment. Also, another 'John', seemingly out of nowhere - is this Sherlock being incredibly finely attuned to the moments where John's war trauma may re-emerge, such as in this scene where they’re viewing a very badly injured body, ready to step in with whatever emotional support may be needed? If so, our boy has come a long way already since the first sweet but clumsy "Would you like to hold hands and talk about your emotions?" when they were viewing the body in Thor Bridge and I’M HERE FOR IT.

And what was that shower scene??? Things getting very much *less weird* for Sherlock while he stares at his dear companion in the shower (who presumably doesn’t shower fully or even half dressed) and imagines what life would be without him? If this show was heading in an unequivocal Johnlock direction, I‘d say this was an awakening. As it is, I don’t believe for a second that Sherlock was high. He just wanted reassurance that John would stay in the picture forever, whatever exactly you like to imagine the picture to be. 😭

More lovely details:

"Cinderella will go to the ball" - "You stop being so bloody clever, and I will stop with the compliments." And literally two minutes later it’s "I'm not asking you to be comfortable, I’m asking you to help me solve the case!" and John being Sherlock’s literal beast of burden so Sherlock can look over a wall that even little John Watson climbs without any assistance only a minute later.

Sherlock Holmes telling John Watson to get on his knees as if this isn’t the moment the Sherlock Holmes fandom has been waiting for for over 140 years.

Sherlock being gentle and friendly with the horse!

The limping sheep in part 1 had me going 👀 already, and now the cataract knife has made its appearance, I really don’t expect a lot of surprises when we get to the denouement, and I'm assuming that the fact that there is an imprint of the letter S from the walking stick on the head of the murder victim just means that there was a violent confrontation quite some time before June actually died. Why else would Sherlock agree with Inspector Gregory that the imprint is there, but also with John that those extensive and massive injuries could not have been caused by a single blow with a stick? Nope, not sensing any dramatic plot twists compared to the original version this time. Let’s see if I was right!

Next up from SD Gundam G Generation:

The AMX-001 Prototype Qubeley. Originally designed as the MSN-008 during the waning days of the one year war, it was one of several units that were eventually completed at Axis. It was designed to be a direct successor to the MAN-08 Elmeth (MAN: Mobile Armour Newtype to MSN: Mobile Suit Newtype), best known for its use by Lahlah Sune, the Ghost of Solomon. Though the psycommu system was largely miniaturised, the Prototype Qubeley was still a large mobile suit, being roughly 25 metres tall. For reference, the RX-78 Gundam stood at roughly 18 meters tall, and the Qubeley itself, which succeeded the Prototype, was only 18.9 meters tall.

Armaments wise, the Prototype Qubeley was armed with two beam sabers built into the hands, analogous to those on the regular Qubeley. However, though powerful, they are not removable like the later model, nor can they double as beam guns. Perhaps in recognition of this, it was also armed with Vulcan guns, mounted on the chest, presumably to dissuade enemies from getting close. Instead of the aforementioned beam guns, the Prototype Qubeley had a set of Mega Particle Cannons mounted in the forearms, which were wired directly to the suits reactor, giving them high output. Interestingly, in order to fire these weapons, the hand would fold away and the arm would split in half to form a firing channel. Lastly, it was armed with psycommu system with which it controlled its funnels, which are miniaturised from the Elmeth’s Bits in both form and function. (It appears in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam Define (below) with a funnel design similar to that of the Qubeley, but in the original game, Sd Gundam G Generation F, they appear as smaller versions of the Elmeth’s). Interestingly, the rear of the Prototype Qubeley where the Funnels are stored does resemble a smaller Elmeth.

Design-wise, really good. The powder blue and yellow and red really make it pop, and it certainly feels Zeonic, with its slim, mono-eyed head and little crown. I like its bulk, since it’s a transition between the round Elmenth to the elegant Qubeley, so it being a little ungainly fits very well, and yet all the spikes and pointy bits give it a good silhouette. My only criticism is that I can’t for the life of me figure out where its waist goes. The above-left picture of it from Z-Define just looks too hunched to me, but its official art makes its body look rather squat, atop its long and graceful legs. (Also, despite what you may think, that large yellow part just in front of the arm isn’t the mega particle cannon, it’s just the side of the chest). In a nutshell, it’s a nice design, I just wish we had more art of it, so it was a little clearer how it all fits together.

Also, wasn’t really sure where to put this, but that red and yellow panelled area on the side of the head? That apparently flashes in a rainbow when it’s charging it’s mega particle cannons, which is just a neat detail.

(Feel free to throw any more art of this thing at me, I know there’s a Gundam War Card design for it I haven’t seen)

THE TOONAMI CARTOON NETWORK/KIDS’ WB ERA (1997-2008) ANIME SMACKDOWN WILL SOON COMMENCE!!

In this tournament we will determine which series that aired on the Toonami block from 1997-2008 that tumblr users enjoyed the most. The one you always made sure to watch or that left the biggest impression on you. And if you didn’t watch Toonami, then vote for the series you liked the best! When vote then  vote in the name of nostalgia over what series you think is best *today*. 

How was each series chosen? 

I sourced the anime included in the bracket based on the well documented Wikipedia page for Toonami. However in order to keep the bracket manageable and even the playing field some decision were made: 

Pokemon, Dragon Ball, Cardcaptors, Sailor Moon, One Piece, Yu-Gi-Oh [GX], and Naruto are excluded due to their overwhelming popularity, so to even the field Yuyu Hakusho will be the only series with its high level of international fame to participate. These series will be included in another bracket [TBA]. However I chose to keep Dragon Ball GT due to how polarizing it was among fans.

For the sake of simplicity series that are in some way chronologically connected will go under the same entry. For example: Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki, Tenchin Universe, and Tenchi in Tokyo are entered together Tenchi Muyo! in the bracket. Zoids: New Century and Zoids: Chaotic Century are entered together as Zoids. Transformers: Armada, Transformers: Enegron, and Transformers: Cybertron are entered together as Transformers Trilogy. Gundam is excluded from this ruling as just about every entry are stand alone stories or exist within separate canons. 

Japanese-international co-productions will be in a bracket of its own [TBA]. However an exception will be made for Voltron, G-Force, and Robotech. While technically considered adaptions because of the reworked scripts and footage, they’re re-broadcasts of early attempts at anime distribution in the US, rather than an attempt at making something for an audience who are already familiar with/fans of anime. The Transformers trilogy is also exempt from this ruling despite being produced by Hasbro as I view them the same as a Bandai produced anime.

 Hamtaro is not seeded but is in fact going up against G-Force: Guardians of Space. (I accidentally wiped the whole bracket 3 separate times while making it and i am not redoing it at this time, sorry)

Do you have any virtual console games on your Wii, I got some PC Engine games on it back in the day and still have them like Dungeon Explorer and Dynastic Hero?

Here's the thing.

My original Wii is dead. It stopped reading discs long ago, the face plate broke off at some point, and it had a bad fall, and the SD card slot actually broke completely off. I was unwilling to send it to Nintendo for repairs because I was afraid they'd see the hoembrew channel or something.

I poured hundreds of dollars into the virtual console. It was actually my first time playing many games. I bought most of the major first party Nintendo releases, and several third party ones. I had all the master system Sonic games, plus Sonic 1 and 2, Castlevania, Super Castlevania IV, Earthworm Jim, all the Mega Man games...

I think the only PC Engine games I had were all the Bonk games.

My current Wii? As you know, the Wii shop channel is dead. I mostly use the homebrew channel to play retro games on my Wii. But just for nostalgia sake, I did inject a few virtual console games. But it's mostly just games I had on my old Wii. Not too many of them. Just my fave Nintendo games, Sonic, and Bonk. I'm unlikely to play them since I have a real NES, SNES, and N64, but they're there.

That said, the Turbographx emulator on the Wii looks blurry, so I'll probably just play the VC versions of Bonk if I'm feeling it.

Steven bei Schlag den Star 😍 und er schämt sich auch für seine Brille, wie cute ist er bitte 😩😂 Ich weiß es ist mega unrealistisch, aber JK bei SDS wäre einfach ein Träumchen, auch wenn ich es viel lieber habe, wenn sie zusammenarbeiten. Ich verstehe diese Eitelkeit/Scham bei Brillen, die so viele haben, wirklich nicht xD Aber ja, Steven ist einfach ein softer Mensch.

JK bei Schlag den Star fänd ich sehr interessant, allein um zu sehen, ob die in den Konkurrenzmodus schalten könnten oder sich die ganze Zeit die Punkte zuschieben würden. Aber sie scheinen es nicht zu wollen, wenn man bei AWFNR gehört hat, wie Joko darüber sprach.

Ich vermiss die beiden auch ein wenig, aber falls Jokos großes Projekt nichts mit Klaas zu tun hat, finde ich es schwer vorstellbar, dass zusätzlich zu ihren bereits existierenden Shows noch etwas kommt...

If this is bothers you, I'm deeply sorry, but how do you draw your robots like that? They look really good!

hmmm, it really depends! I personally take a ton of inspiration from design styles like Medabots and Mega Man, though I also try and look at real-world things like computers, machine parts, and toys.

I find that a large part of differentiating robotic beings from organic ones is to look at how the joints are handled

Menamo’s shoulders and thighs are given a bit of space and are shaped to look like they can slide across the corresponding shape in her main body. Pretty much any area that needs to pivot or rotate in some way needs some room to do so. Her elbow could probably stand to have more of the internal joint showing (oops) but note how there’s a shape in her lower arm where her upper arm would rest if she flexed her arm as far as she could.

You also might get some use out of looking at BJDs, as those joints are designed to simulate a human-like range of motion while being constructed out of non-pliable components.

There’s also the matter of making robots look overtly mechanical, where they’re obviously a machine rather than, say, a human wearing a costume. Messing with bodily proportions is another way to make robots look “robotic” because it pushes them more into the range of being alien/nonhuman. This tutorial is was made with Transformers in mind, but it’s still a good look at varying up your proportions!

Another big tenant (and just sort of something that comes with learning how to render physical objects) is space and how shapes occupy it. It’s something that I need to focus on a bit more, but take Maple as an example

Though my perspective isn’t the best here, there’s still a good sense of her being constructed out of solid geometric shapes, and I’ve tried to pay attention to how the parts that make up her body fit in relation to each other. Having bulky, simple shapes make up large portions of her body helps her look like she was manufactured/constructed because they contrast the softer and more subtle shapes you find on an organic creature.

There’s really no wrong way to design/draw a robot, these are just the general guidelines I follow. For instance, Gray breaks pretty much all the guidelines I’ve established, but she’s still a robot because that’s... what she’s stated to be, pretty much.

And references, ofc! I get a ton of design inspiration by looking at what games/cartoons/artists have done in terms of designing robots, and trying to integrate interesting elements into my work in my own way. I listed Medabots and Mega Man above, but stuff like Gundam (particularly SD), Sonic, MLAATR, and Bionicle have also been big influences on me.
