hi sorry was thinking of this the other day and then u happened to mention the reeds in ur underrated houses post and so obvi i had to contribute!! meera and jojen reed being absolute icons the only kids of the only man on earth who could possibly tell jon who his parents are and instead of trying to find him they’re like :) no, bran instead. sure they might not ‘canonically’ know r+l=j but like, they know and it’s just so comedic to me that instead of going to end jon’s lifelong internal torment over his mother’s identity and possibly find another person who’ll be helpful in bloodraven’s evil agenda to save/take over the realm, they’re just like :) bran tree boy :) and dont even think abt jon. not to mention howland just chilling in greywater watch like :) no idk where my kids are but they’re fine :) yes i’m hearing all abt this rogue targaryen in essos with dragons and can’t possibly think of someone in a relatively close distance to me who might need that info :) oh my good friend ned’s dead and he never needed me to corroborate his story abt his sister’s son and her death? can’t see that there’s anything i need to do abt that :) anyways reeds absolute icons
i will defend the reeds from these allegations jojen and meera think they are actively trying to prevent the apocalypse by helping bran. who’s got the time to track down jon and tell him he’s a targaryen they don’t know he’s tormented about it they don’t know he’s the protagonist they don’t even know the kid. He’s not gonna stop being a Targaryen if you don’t tell him he’s just going to be safer. It’s realm-destabilizing tier information that would endanger ned and his entire family if anyone knew including jon himself. The Reeds are actually SO real for having the juiciest secret that could restart a whole lot of drama and just hanging out in the bayou instead because it would ruin their bestie ned’s life. And probably their own lives if they ever talked about it.
the potential of jojen and meera knowing so the RLJ reveal comes not through a magic vision or through Howland finally rolling up in his fantasy fanboat to talk to Jon but through like. morning meeting circle time in the cave with old man rivers is sooooooooo. yeah
#meera voice my fun fact of the day is that your brother is a targaryen#is bloodraven doing responsive classroom in this scenario.#anyways idk if the kids Know but Meera has probably accurately guessed and kept it to herself#asoiaf#the reeds deciding bran is the real protagonist makes them smart and correct

I have a boatload of thoughts from rereading A Game of Thrones and A Clash of Kings.
With AGOT specifically, there are so many characters that I forgot were introduced in this book? Especially Renly - for some reason in my memory his first appearance was when he meets Catelyn in ACOK, and I forgot he had a big role in all the King’s Landing politicking in AGOT, including trying to form an alliance with Ned. (But even Kyra - Theon’s girlfriend in ACOK - gets a cameo in AGOT.) Another weird thing about the book is how prominent Ned is - he has the most chapters, and so much of the plot revolves around him (the thing with Bran and the assassin, the attempted assassination plot on Dany, etc.) I’m so used to his being de-centered being itself integral to the series that I forgot that he’s very much set up as the protagonist. (But I also forgot how much plot and page time there is left after he gets killed.)
ACOK is weird because I’d forgotten so much of what happens in the plot. I remembered the prologue, with the introduction of Stannis and the attempted murder of Melisandre, I remembered Renly’s death (although i forgot that Mel literally gives birth to the murderous shadow 😬), I remembered Theon’s arc and the sack of Winterfell, and I remembered Dany and the House of the Undying. But I’d forgotten a lot of the intricacies of the politicking at King’s Landing, which I actually enjoyed immensely, and about Arya’s time at Harrenhal. I’d also forgotten that Dany’s arc in this book kind of sucks? The House of the Undying chapter is genuinely incredible and iconic for a reason - probably one of my favourite chapters in the book - but the stuff leading up to it (and after it) is just marking time. I’d also forgotten that Meera and Jojen Reed are introduced in this book, because I associate them so much with the events of A Storm of Swords (and later), particularly the story of the Tourney at Harrenhal.
I think ACOK, while an enjoyable read, is not the strongest of the books though - a lot of what happens is to set up plot points in the third book, especially with Sansa and Dany, and to a lesser degree Jon and Catelyn. Sansa in particular doesn’t have much to do at all in this book, which is disappointing - though her chapters do provide some interesting insight into Cersei’s character, and the parallels between the two of them.

We’re living in the age of alternative canon.
Here’s mine.
Arya is the master of whispers and her lord consort Gendry is in charge of establishing new centers of trade, public education, and gyms for the smallfolk. Arya is a well rounded woman so she constructs various agencies for women and children to recover from the war’s emotional, physical, and financial trauma. Also she has a sick ass collection of sunglasses.
Bran is a king. The best of kings. He is kind, just, and throws shade only when need be. He has an impressive array of shorts bc KL is hot as shit. Meera Reed is named his queen and Bran honors her by creating a whole Frog statue and reserve open to the public for beauty and education.
Sansa is hand of the king and qitn. Is it a conflict of interest? Yes. Do the Starks care? Fawk no. Anyways. She jealously guards her nation’s interests and also has a side interest as a bdsm domme which is demonstrated by her sartorial choices. Major wlw icon.

It is known: D&D are The Worst
Here are my thoughts on the finale (sorry they aren't under a cut - I'm on mobile).
I'm avoiding talking about the obvious points like "What was the point of Jon being a Targaryen?", "Why the hell is Bran King?", and the blatant destruction of the characterization of Dany and Drogon.
1) Sansa's costume during her coronation was perhaps the best costume to ever grace GoT. It should have gotten WAY more screen time (and better lighting). We get 10 full minutes of Tyrion rearranging chairs but we couldn't see more ~aesthetic~ shots of that masterpiece?? The costumes are (in my mind) definitively the best thing to be produced by GoT. Also - where are the icons and headers of Sansa in this costume?? I need them fam.
2) Lots of dead air. Tyrion was literally just walking around in the ash for 10% of the episode. It was ... Boring. Boring is the only word for watching someone just walk around and rearrange chairs.
3) The tiny scene where Drogon rises out of the ashes was the coolest scene in the whole episode (minus Sansa being crowned and Jon being reunited with Ghost).
4) Why didn't Dany have any last words?? Going this route D&D couldn't throw us a bone with some powerful last words??? I would have liked for her to call out to her Sun and Stars or whisper that Jon would never be King (honestly having her last words be the reason Jon CHOOSES not to be King in the end would have made a lot more sense than "Grey Worm doesn't like the idea").
5) Bouncing off that, having Jon CHOOSE to go back to the Wall because he is tired / because that was his pledge / because that's where his wolf is / whatever they came up with would have made A LOT more sense.
6) We (essentially) ALREADY KNOW what's West of Westeros!!!!! While no literature of GRRMs speaks definitively on the matter (Fire and Blood speaks definitively on very little, encouraging the reader to come to their own opinion based on the accounts put forward), it's assumed that indeed the planet is round, and West of Westeros is Asshai (and some islands of a similarly shadowy nature). Why are we acting as if Arya would be the first to attempt this journey when there are several who have done so before (and assumedly many more whose accounts went undocumented)? Scholars out there - am I wrong on this?
7) So uh ... What happened to Meera? A LOYAL friend to "King Bran" and House Stark she ... stays at Greywater Watch for the rest of her life and has no further role to play? Yara played a similar secondary character who we see in the end - why not Meera? Would Meera not have come to bend the knee to Queen Sansa? Would Meera not have faced the dead as Lyanna Mormont did? I suppose it could be argued that House Reed has always had little involvement in the politics of the realm and in doing nothing Meera falls into the same vein as her father (serving loyally then retreating home), but I find this to be ... a bit of a lackluster story.
In light of these complaints, I am not angered by the ending of GoT. I always anticipated that GoT would be an 'alternate ending' of sorts to ASOIAF, and I never expected the former to hold up to the latter. It was really cool to see the dragons of my imagination and have images and settings for the characters I love so much for my minds eye, but ASOIAF will remain my one true canon for these characters.
As for the damage D&D have done to women, PoC, domestic violence victims, and other marginalized people, there are no words to express my sadness watching their horror show unfold. In a time where unity is so critical, they could have easily brought hope and representation to many people, which they refused to do. I hope D&D do better in their future projects, but I don't see myself investing in the prequel series (and thankfully, I have never seen Star Wars).
As I have been for years, I'll just continue on with my hopes that GRRM will finish up TWOW with some fervor, so we can drown out the parts of GoT that have set us all to arguing with one another about a bad representation of the real thing.

GoT 08.05 Reactions
1) Tyrion what the FUCK. You idiot. You turned over your BEST FRIEND who was RIGHT to crazy murder lady.
2) Jon, honey, she’s lost her shit. Just plz stop.
3) Jaime. No. I will usually stand by a writer’s choice, but throwing away 7 seasons of Jaime Lannister’s character development was the biggest waste I’ve ever seen in my life. Disgusting. Jaime would NEVER.
4) What a stupid death for Cersei.
5) Arya’s Murder Dad Sandor is the best dad. He saved Arya from being consumed by violence and the thirst for revenge. Now she can go back and savor the possibilities he lost out on: love, family, acceptance.
6) Dany needs to calm the shit down. What the HECK. Also, if she was SO fixated on revenge on Cersei, wHY DID SHE NOT GO STRAIGHT FOR THE KEEP WHEN SHE SNAPPED???? WHY BURN THE WHOLE CITY???
7) Dany and Grey Worm’s actions, while terrible, are in character for the arc. Dany has absolutely been progressing towards this madness from the beginning. Look at season 1 Dany and the witch that killed Khal Drogo. That lady told Dany that life didn't matter if it was empty. And that lady was right. And now Dany gets that. She doesn’t value life anymore because hers is empty of love and close true loyalty that isn’t from fear. No it isn’t misogyny or out of nowhere or anything like that. It has been set up the entire time. Just because she’s a woman doesn’t mean they’re screwing her over. Just like killing Missandei wasn’t the writers fucking over the only WoC for no reason. Missandei died BECAUSE of her importance and value, particularly to Dany and Grey Worm. Missandei was the last of their humanity.
8) There were exactly 2 fun moments this episode. One is Qyburn getting absolutely YEETED out of the way by the Mountain. Iconic. What a shithead. Two is Cersei looking at the Hound and the Mountain and saying “well, this is none of MY business” and immediately dipping bc yikes Cleganebowl is not a thing she wanna be near.
9) Watching all those citizens die was absolutely brutal. But watching Dany burn the Iron fleet, the scorpions, and busting through that wall behind the Golden Company was Badass.
10) The weirdly long Arya is a horse girl moment was weirdly long.
11) Euron Greyjoy did NOT deserve to die smiling. And Yara Greyjoy got abandoned faster than Meera Reed.
Predictions:
Jon will kill Dany. Tyrion may die and if he lives he’s definitely gonna retire. Sansa will rule over something, I hope she becomes Queen of the 7 kingdoms if they stay together. Sansa was made to rule and early seasons foreshadowed it. She is the most prepared and most likely to be down for it. Maybe Jon would agree to be her Hand, but probs not. Maybe the 7 kingdoms will split up or the North will split off at the very least. Davos will be Jon’s Hand if he is king. Arya will be reunited with Gendry. Brienne is gonna be STRESSED. Tyrion could open his vineyard while Bronn lives nearby in Highgarden. Bronn may kill Drogon to save Tyrion from execution.
