“Who are you?” asked Konstantin, breathing fast.
“Did you never see my face before?” asked the creature. “Ah, no, at Midwinter you saw the beast and the shadow, but not the man.” He got slowly to his feet. He and Konstantin were nearly of a height. “Never mind. You know my voice.” He cast down his eyes like a girl.
“Do I please you, man of God?”

If you described the plot of the winternight trilogy to someone they’d say “that’s spinning silver” and if you described the characters of the winternight trilogy to someone they’d say “that’s uprooted” but it’s NOT
It’s like Naomi novik and Katherine Arden thought of the same book and then wrote it completely completely differently
At face value vasya and morozko are literally just agnieszka and sarkan but they’re so completely different with such completely unique complex inner thoughts
And that’s just good writing on all sides of the equation

You know what Konstantin and Vasya both need? A sense of humor. Then they would see that they have the fortune to date the most hilarious twins ever (even if one of them is not hilarious on purpose).

I went into The Winternight Trilogy fully prepared to be obsessed with the winter-demon and the witch, but I somehow ended up shipping his twin evil brother and the angry priest???? 🌶🍸🤡

I have such deep respect for Katherine Arden’s ability to make the characters she clearly wanted to be terrifying genuinely so. For whatever reason, it’s not a skill--or series of skills to create a desired result that comes through to the reader--many authors possess.
Not only did she do that, but she struck that balance between dangerous, frightening, and alluring with Morozko. Frankly, she struck all different types of scary yet fascinating with Morozko, Medved, and even in another way, Konstantin.
I’ve not been quiet about Konstantin being one of my favorite characters in that series. It’s not because I like him as a person, nor do I think he’s at all a good one. Yet he’s terrifyingly human--especially when compared to the old gods--with such self-serving interests, cruelty, and desperation all beneath a command and charisma that draws people in. All of that’s masked by good looks. He gains power and followers by instilling fear.
He’s not a priest or a true man of God like Father Sergei. He’s a cult leader. He’s intelligent, ruthless, and cunning in his own right. He obviously does some extremely unforgivable things and gets more than a little creepy in several instances, but while the old gods act in the unexpected ways you’d expect, Konstantin is another type of dangerous entirely.
I love the awareness of the many forms evil can take without ever condemning one side or the other just because there’s evil and corruption in both.

Winternight trilogy is just spinning silver if the fire guy and the ice guy had more of a dysfunctional family vibe

Decided to do another before and after it’s really satisfying for me to see how much progress I made in such a short time!
I was freaking out. I was so happy! Like I made this! wow
I’ve been reading the bear in the Nightingale by Catherine Arden and I’m officially in love. I’ll probably be posting some more artwork from her book. This is medved the bear one of the antagonists.
And if you’re curious, look it up online, there’s a free digital version of the book that you can tap into no tricks I promise!
