Our ability to detect patterns might stem from the brain's desire to represent things in the simplest way possible
A. Example sequence of visual stimuli (left) representing a random walk on an underlying transition network (right). B. For each stimulus, subjects are asked to respond by pressing a combination of one or two buttons on a keyboard. C. Each of the 15 possible button combinations corresponds to a node in the transition network. We only consider networks with nodes of uniform degree k = 4 and edges with uniform transition probability 0.25. D. Subjects were asked to respond to sequences of 1500 such nodes drawn from two different transition architectures: a modular graph (left) and a lattice graph (right). E. Average reaction times across all subjects for the different button combinations, where the diagonal elements rep- resent single-button presses and the off-diagonal elements represent two-button presses. F. Average reaction times as a function of trial number, characterized by a steep drop-off in the first 500 trials followed by a gradual decline in the remaining 1,000 trials. Credit: Lynn et al.
During their first year of life, infants can recognize patterned sound sequences. As we grow, we develop the ability to pick out increasingly complex patterns within streams of words and musical notes. Traditionally, cognitive scientists have assumed that the brain uses a complicated algorithm to find links between disparate concepts, thereby yielding a higher-level understanding.
Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania—Christopher Lynn, Ari Kahn and Danielle Bassett—are building an entirely different model, indicating that our ability to detect patterns might stem, in part, from the brain's desire to represent things in the simplest way possible.
The brain does more than just process incoming information, said Lynn, a physics graduate student. "It constantly tries to predict what's coming next. If, for instance, you're attending a lecture on a subject you know something about, you already have some grasp of the higher-order structure. That helps you connect ideas together and anticipate what you'll hear next."
The new model offers striking insights on human cognition, suggesting that people can and indeed do make mistakes in detecting individual components of a pattern in order to catch a glimpse of the bigger picture. For example, Lynn explained, "if you look at a pointillist painting up close, you can correctly identify every dot. If you step back 20 feet, the details get fuzzy, but you'll gain a better sense of the overall structure." The brain may well adopt a similar strategy, he said.

A daily dose of depression!
Tumblr media
It’s true, reality fucking sucks. Sure, there are some shining few that have slithered through the cracks of darkness and despair but for the majority of America we remain stuck, squeeze, and constricted.
I’d like to think of life not as the Notebook nor Sweet Home Alabama but a mixture of a demented Wizard of Oz, sprinkled with the most heinous but alluring episodes of Shameless. Sooo, all of them?!
In a world where the usual:
“I’m depressed” is met with...
“Who isn’t?”
Most of us live a life of family disfunction and debauchery. Flying monkeys and fentanyl; sprinkle in a little hope to keep those positive meme puppets happy, slap in broken marriages, dick pics, and candy crush and you have today’s world...chaos.
With chaos comes crisis and with crisis comes sorrow, sadness, delirium and depression.
Those who have been bitten with the demon of depression know it’s long lasting effects. As a victim, it, well...sucks! Does it get better? Honestly, in my opinion...no. A man who has lost both parents before the age 25; lost a best friend to suicide, countless bouts of being homeless and a few other horrid experiences I have some small thought about it all.
I often refer to depression as a mixtape of emotions; a blank tape which readies to play every morning you wake. Eyes open and that “play” button is pushed. What will it be today, what “tune”. What feeling, emotion, version of myself or mind will be echoed in between my ears today?
Maybe some self-hatred, regret, and or rage. Those are some of my favorite “bands.” Maybe I’ll be happy, rejuvenated, and rejoice in another day alive. Though, maybe I’ll want to put a gun in my mouth and see what’s on the other side. Could be the day I love humanity or the day I hate every fucking person around me.
Welcome to the world of mental disorder.
Wait, what about medicine!?
Fuck medicine. In a world that’s ever increasing in the futile fights of addiction I’d rather wake to battle my monsters than sedate and wait. You can read related studies within medicalexpress or conversations of Dr. Andrew Weil about correlating studies of addiction, withdrawal symptoms connected to anti-depressants.
So, the question is:
“What do you do?”
You suffer and fight. Sorry, this blog isn’t filled with too much positivity.
Though, that’s life. To live and to suffer and somehow, someway find some sort of beauty in the beast of it all.
What other options are there? Sure, suicide. Live or die. It’s that cut and dry but beside my own two suicide attempts I’d rather, deeply inside of me choose..life.
No matter how brutal and beastly, broken and betrayed I have and had felt.
How?
Choose something or someone to live for. With me, it’s my children. I’ve come to far and fought so long to put that rope around my neck or bullet in my brain. If anything I can teach them not so much about physical strength but emotional and mental even if I continually and undoubtedly will be fighting such for the rest of my life.
Someone or something. Latch on but before you begin; learn to love yourself. I’m a firm believer if you can’t even manage to put one band aid, one stitch, and or sling around those mental bullet holes and broken pieces..no one will be able to. Fight and forge an inner fire your demons wouldn’t even dare to step in.
