ENTRY FIFTY-NINE
It's always interesting when someone asks me what it's like working in the cannabis industry.
The first thing I mention is being at the age of 41 and never thinking it would be possible back in the day. If I could go back in time and tell my younger self that someday I'd be selling legal weed, I probably wouldn't have believed it! I'm still adjusting to the legality somewhat, but it has been so exciting not only interviewing for cannabis jobs but working them as well.
The interviews are awesome because instead of hiding it and hoping they never find out, you get to talk to the employer about your passion for cannabis and cannabis products. I've been in the cannabis industry for 3 years. I've done multiple interviews for cannabis jobs and they're always fun and exciting.
Working the job has been an amazing experience for the most part. Most of the clientele is pretty chill but every now and then you get a Karen or two. It is still customer service and retail after all. However, knowing the medicinal patient successfully treated their pain and stress, knowing the recreational patient had a safe and fun-filled evening makes it beyond worth it.
Then there's this little part...
😱 Being middle-aged and going back to retail (yes it's medical but a dispensary is still like a store in the way that you have similar responsibilities like cleaning and making sales for example). 😱
My first career path was to become a forensic psychologist. Long story short, I got screwed over by student loans and couldn't continue my education beyond my Masters of Science in Psychology, which merely provided a foundation for the ultimate goal I was attempting to work toward.
Once I knew I was officially done, that there were no more classes, no way to afford to keep going in college, no way to achieve what I already worked so hard for, I wanted a job I'd enjoy to ease the sting of dead dreams and crippling debt.
I wanted a job that would be good for the mind, heart, and soul even if it wasn't good for the wallet. I'm just so done with working my ass off at jobs that make me miserable on a daily basis.
Can I enjoy at least one thing in life? Can I at least start to live MY life for ME a little bit?
My only other occupational interest besides forensic psychology was cannabis. I have been using cannabis medicinally to help with my ADHD and C-PTSD. I also use it to help with redecoration, art projects, lots of other things aside from medical treatment. I thought, "I can still help other people, just in a different way now."
So that's why I am a middle-aged woman working in retail. My original plan didn't pan out and I wanted to do something I'd enjoy. We can't all be doctors, lawyers, famous actresses, or heirs to huge fortunes. Some of us are worker bees that need to find a job. And if I am going to be stuck working for the rest of my days, especially since my generation may not have anything to retire on, then I am going to need to be in a place that I don't dread for the sake of sanity.
And so, here we are! I'm a budtender. This is the career path I chose after the first one didn't work out. It's been quite an experience so far. Entering the industry, meeting all the characters in it, sampling different kinds of products, it's been fun! And currently, I am learning and sharpening my skills as a purchasing manager to my favorite dispensary in town of all places!
However, I have complaints. Two of them.
Complaint One:
We all want to hire the right people. We all want to bring on people that will be honest, reliable, and who will take the job seriously. Totally get that. BUT that won't be achieved through making the industry impossible to get into. It took me over a year to get my foot in the door! It is a little disappointing if the person doesn't have experience but how are they supposed to gain experience if no one gives them a chance to do so? Be willing to train! You might be turning away a great potential employee for a completely fixable reason!
Complaint Two:
I wish when legalization hit that the hippies had the money to invest. This is cannabis, weed, ganja, tree, Mary Jane! This should be a hippie industry with good vibes but it's not. Who did get to invest? Fucking car salesmen that made the cannabis industry horribly competitive and cut-throat.
My POV: I don't see other budtenders and dispensaries as competition. I see us all as cannabis enthusiasts trying to get the people some damn good weed. There's no place here for spitefulness and making moves against one another to cost people their jobs or companies.
On another note, talk to some women working in the cannabis industry about the ample amounts of sexual harassment they've dealt with and we can take this little convo into a whole new direction! There just shouldn't be any place in the cannabis industry for that type of stuff, but there is unfortunately.
That's pretty much the industry in its entirety and I hope it changes someday.
More thoughts later.

Green Cash: Cannabis Dispensary Payment Options and Banking Challenges
The cannabis industry is rapidly expanding, but it still grapples with significant challenges related to banking and payment processing. In this article, we will explore the payment options available to cannabis dispensaries and the ongoing banking challenges they face, which stem from the complex legal and regulatory landscape surrounding cannabis.
**1. Limited Payment Options: Cash Dominates
Cash transactions are the dominant payment method in the cannabis industry. This reliance on cash stems from the reluctance of traditional banks to work with resin dispensary deals businesses due to the federal illegality of cannabis in many countries.
**2. Banking Challenges: The Federal-State Conflict
The biggest banking challenge for cannabis dispensaries is the disconnect between state and federal regulations. While many states have legalized cannabis for medical or recreational use, it remains illegal at the federal level. This contradiction creates a risk for banks that fear federal prosecution or penalties for facilitating cannabis transactions.
**3. The Cole Memo: Shifting Federal Priorities
The Cole Memo, issued during the Obama administration, provided some guidance to banks on working with cannabis businesses, as long as they adhered to strict compliance measures. However, the memo was rescinded by the Trump administration, leading to even more uncertainty for banks.
**4. Cannabis Banking Legislation: Mixed Progress
Several legislative efforts have aimed to address the banking challenges faced by the cannabis industry. The SAFE Banking Act (Secure and Fair Enforcement Banking Act) is one notable example. This bill seeks to provide legal protections for banks working with cannabis businesses. While it has passed the U.S. House of Representatives, it faces an uncertain future in the Senate.
Tumblr media
**5. Cash Management: Risks and Costs
Handling large amounts of cash presents various risks and costs for cannabis dispensaries:
Security Risks: Cash-intensive businesses are vulnerable to theft, making security a top concern.
Operational Costs: Counting, transporting, and storing cash incur operational expenses.
Limited Financial Services: Without access to traditional banking services, dispensaries may struggle to manage payroll, pay bills, or secure loans.
**6. Cryptocurrency and Alternative Payments: A Ray of Hope
Some cannabis dispensaries have explored alternative payment methods to mitigate their reliance on cash:
Cryptocurrency: Certain cryptocurrencies, like Bitcoin, have been used for cannabis transactions. They offer a degree of anonymity and security.
Payment Apps: Some payment apps and platforms cater to the cannabis industry by facilitating electronic transactions.
ATMs: Dispensaries may install ATMs on-site to provide customers with a convenient way to withdraw cash for purchases.
**7. Cashless Payment Solutions: Emerging Innovations
In response to the industry's banking challenges, innovative cashless payment solutions have emerged:
Closed-Loop Payment Systems: Some companies offer closed-loop payment systems that allow customers to purchase a prepaid card or digital voucher, which can then be used for cannabis purchases.
Blockchain-Based Solutions: Blockchain technology is being explored to create transparent and secure payment solutions for the cannabis industry.
Dispensary Loyalty Programs: Some dispensaries offer loyalty programs where customers can earn rewards or discounts through cashless transactions.
**8. Dispensary and Customer Impact: A User Experience Perspective
The reliance on cash impacts both dispensaries and customers:
Dispensaries: Managing cash is labor-intensive and poses security risks. Limited access to financial services can hinder business growth and development.
Customers: Cash transactions can be inconvenient and less secure for customers, who may prefer electronic payment methods.
**9. The Road Ahead: Advocacy and Reform
The cannabis industry continues to advocate for banking reform and federal legalization to address the challenges associated with payment processing and banking. Until a comprehensive solution is achieved, dispensaries and financial institutions will need to navigate a complex and uncertain landscape.
**10. Conclusion: A Cash-Heavy Balancing Act
Cannabis dispensaries face unique payment and banking challenges driven by the federal-state conflict over cannabis legality. While alternative payment methods and cashless solutions are emerging, the industry continues to grapple with the limitations of a predominantly cash-based system. Advocacy and legislative efforts may eventually bring about the reforms needed to provide dispensaries and customers with safer and more efficient payment options. Until then, the cannabis industry remains in a cash-heavy balancing act.

Navigating Michigan Cannabis Debt Collection Laws
Tumblr media
With the legalization of cannabis for both medicinal and recreational purposes in many states, including Michigan, the cannabis industry has experienced significant growth. However, like any business sector, the cannabis industry faces challenges, including managing debt and ensuring timely customer payments. In this blog post, we will explore the intricacies of cannabis debt collection in Michigan and shed light on the role of Michigan collection agencies in this context.
Understanding Cannabis Debt Collection in Michigan
Legal Landscape: Michigan's cannabis industry is regulated by the Michigan Regulation and Taxation of Marihuana Act (MRTMA). This act allows adults aged 21 and above to possess and consume marijuana recreationally. Additionally, the Michigan Medical Marihuana Act (MMMA) governs the use of cannabis for medical purposes. It is crucial for businesses operating in this industry to understand the legal framework surrounding debt collection to ensure compliance.
Cannabis Debt Types: Cannabis businesses may encounter different types of debt, including unpaid invoices, loans, and lease agreements. Regardless of the debt type, it is essential to establish clear payment terms and documentation to facilitate smooth debt collection processes.
Compliance with State and Federal Laws: Michigan collection agencies must adhere to state and federal laws when collecting cannabis-related debts. The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) is a federal law that sets guidelines for fair debt collection practices, protecting consumers from harassment and unfair practices. Collection agencies must familiarize themselves with these laws to avoid legal consequences.
Role of Michigan Collection Agencies
Expertise in Cannabis Debt Collection: Michigan collection agencies that specialize in cannabis debt collection possess extensive knowledge and experience in navigating the unique challenges of the industry. They understand the complexities of the regulatory environment and can effectively handle the collection process while maintaining compliance with state and federal laws.
Communication and Mediation: Collection agencies are intermediaries between cannabis businesses and debtors. They communicate with debtors on behalf of the business, attempting to negotiate payment arrangements and finding mutually beneficial solutions. Their expertise in communication and mediation helps resolve disputes and improve the chances of debt recovery.
Legal Knowledge: Michigan collection agencies are well-versed in state-specific laws and regulations related to debt collection. They stay updated on any changes or amendments that may impact the collection process. By understanding the intricacies of Michigan's cannabis debt collection laws, collection agencies can effectively navigate potential legal obstacles and ensure compliance.
Protection against Legal Risks: Outsourcing debt collection to a Michigan collection agency can help protect cannabis businesses from legal risks. Collection agencies can handle potentially contentious situations, such as debtor disputes or legal actions, minimizing the burden on businesses and allowing them to focus on their core operations.
To Conclude
Debt collection in the cannabis industry can be complex, especially considering the specific regulations surrounding the business. Understanding the legal framework and compliance requirements is vital for cannabis businesses and collection agencies operating in Michigan. By engaging the services of a knowledgeable and reputable collection agency, cannabis businesses can improve their chances of recovering debts while ensuring compliance with state and federal laws.
Michigan collection agencies specializing in cannabis debt collection offer expertise, communication skills, legal knowledge, and protection against legal risks. These agencies play a crucial role in bridging the gap between cannabis businesses and debtors, helping navigate the industry's unique challenges and facilitating successful debt recovery.
As the cannabis industry evolves, staying informed about Michigan's cannabis debt collection laws and partnering with experienced collection agencies will remain essential for businesses looking to thrive in this growing market.

Jerry Garcia’s Grateful Dead cannabis brand is leaving California
Jerry Garcia is one of California's most iconic pot smokers. Born in San Francisco, Garcia led the Grateful Dead for 30 years as the city became an international beacon of the counterculture. He did it all while casually and openly smoking weed. His pot pipe is considered an artifact of California cannabis and thc Krt Carts history.
But even the iconic Jerry Garcia name couldn't survive California's turbulent legal pot market.
The Garcia Hand Picked brand, launched by the deceased musician's family in 2020, has pulled out of the state, a spokesperson confirmed to SFGATE. Garcia's exit comes as cannabis insiders predict a "mass extinction event" for California's pot and thc  Lions Carts industry, with thousands of companies expected to go out of business this year.
Andrew DeAngelo, a cannabis consultant and former owner of Harborside, one of the state's pioneering medical cannabis dispensaries, said the Garcia brand probably learned the same thing that all of California's pot and thc  Muha Meds Carts companies have realized: "You can't make any money in this market."
"Not only is Garcia leaving, a lot of people are leaving," DeAngelo told SFGATE. "It's a real shame that California is losing out. We're losing out on jobs and economic activity and other places are benefiting from that."
Like most celebrity brands, Garcia selected who to contract out its cannabis, growing and manufacturing to partner companies and then stamped Jerry Garcia's face on the packaging. The company said they are looking for a new cannabis or thc Orchid Vape supplier but declined to be interviewed for this story. It did not elaborate on how long the brand would be on hiatus in California. Garcia Hand Picked is still available in five other states.
"We're taking a pause in California. We want to ensure CA consumers have the highest quality flower for the long term, so we are in the process of choosing a new local partner for cultivation, production, sales and distribution of Garcia Hand Picked in CA," a spokesperson from Holistic Industries, the brand's parent company, said in an email to SFGATE.
California's cannabis and thc  Pure One Carts industry has faced substantial economic hurdles in its first four years of legal sales. The state's complicated cannabis regulations and high taxes add costs to legal operators, while widespread illegal farms and retailers undercut legitimate companies. Limited access to banking means these companies pay exorbitant fees for simple banking services and have almost no access to loans. Federal law blocks pot companies from deducting most business taxes from their federal taxes, making pot businesses pay an effective federal tax rate as high as 80%.
These factors have made California a painful place to run a legal pot business. Most small legacy cannabis farms are on their way out of business, and even the country's most prominent cannabis/ vape companies such as Rove carts are leaving the state. 'This is very painful for them.'
Nearly a dozen states had legalized cannabis by the time Jerry Garcia's surviving family decided to start a pot brand built around the Grateful Dead front man, who died of a heart attack in 1995. But the Garcias chose to launch their brand in California, where Jerry was born, spearheaded an artistic movement, and died.
The Golden State featured prominently in that initial launch. An air-stream painted with swirling psychedelic colors crisscrossed the state in late 2020, announcing the new brand. Esquire profiled the family as they smoked a bong in Oakland and asked, "If Jerry Garcia were a kind of weed, what would the high feel like?" The family told Esquire they were planning on opening a Jerry Garcia-themed cannabis consumption lounge at a dispensary in San Francisco, which never materialized.
But there's now only one jar of Garcia Hand Picked available in San Francisco, according to Weedmaps, and there's no sign that any more will return to the Bay Area. DeAngelo, who said he did some early consulting work for Garcia Hand Picked but is no longer involved with the brand, saying leaving California was probably hard on the family.
"This was a hard decision for them, they love California," DeAngelo said. "They were born and bred here. This is very painful for them, I guarantee that."
Eli Melrod, the CEO and co-founder of the Soulful dispensary chain, which deal in thc Wonka Oil said the brand's exit from California was a sign of a struggle for even good cannabis brands to make money in the state.
"California is probably the most competitive cannabis market in the country, it is a market where there are a lot of brands fighting for shelf space," Melrod told SFGATE. "I think for some folks the margins and the challenges in California make it better for them to focus on other states."
The brand is still for sale in Colorado, Maryland, Michigan, Massachusetts, and Oregon. It offers a range of cannabis flowers, thc carts  Big Chief Carts , pre-rolled joints, and colorful pot-infused gummies shaped like guitar picks. Its packaging features Jerry Garcia's face connected to swirling, psychedelic colors, akin to Milton Glasser's iconic 1966 poster of Bob Dylan.
Melrod said he usually doesn't sell celebrity brands at his stores because most celebrities have poor-quality products, but Garcia was different. He said they had good cannabis grown by some of the state's best outdoor cannabis growers, like Moon Made Farms and Sonoma Hills Farms.
"We start from a place of skepticism because we've seen a lot of celebrity brands launch in cannabis that are really just basically a celebrity name on a product that is marked up," Melrod told SFGATE. "We really appreciated the approach that the Garcia Hand Picked team took to sourcing. They worked with a lot of great legacy farmers in the Emerald Triangle."
The Garcia brand's departure also signifies that customers are tired of celebrity pot brands. There are so many famous people selling weed that even rock stars are noticing that it might not be an accessible business to invest. David Crosby told the Los Angeles Times last year that he wanted to start his pot brand but said, "Celebrity brands didn't turn out to work nearly as well as anyone thought they were gonna."Can we say Buddha Bear Carts ?
Indeed, Garcia Hand Picked isn't even the first Grateful Dead pot brand. Drummer Mickey Hart launched his pre-rolled joint brand called Mind your Head in 2019, although that brand also appears to be on hiatus. Its website is down, and a brand representative could be contacted for this story.
Garcia Hand Picked and Mind Your Head could return to the state, but Deadheads in California will have to get by without smoking any cannabis blessed by the legendary band.

FULL HOUSE TO VOTE ON BILL LEGALIZING CANNABIS While many politicians and civic leaders agree with legalization on a philosophical level, we have yet to see a clear, concise path to the decriminalization of cannabis. Until now. Today the Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act (or the “MORE Act”) will be voted on by the full House of Representatives. If passed, it would remove cannabis from the schedule of controlled substances, impose a federal tax on cannabis revenue, and expunge some prior convictions for low-level cannabis offenses.
Thirty six states and the District of Columbia have legalized medical marijuana over the last few years, and 19 states plus D.C. have decriminalized recreational marijuana use for adults.
In addition, legalization would help unlock the barrier between the cannabis industry and basic financing options like loans and capital raising on U.S. exchanges. This bill is expected to pass the house, but its fate in the Senate is unclear.
At Snapdragon Hemp, we are continuing to monitor this legislation (and many others like it), and will remain your trusted source for information in the ever-evolving cannabis market.

Marijuana Stocks Green Thumb, Trulieve Report Big Profit Gains
Tumblr media
U.S. cannabis producer Green Thumb Industries (GTBIF) reported second-quarter earnings after the close Wednesday that beat estimates, helped by sales growth in Illinois and Pennsylvania. Rival Trulieve (TCNNF) reported a big rise in earnings and sales early Thursday.
X
Green Thumb stock, Trulieve and other U.S. marijuana stocks slipped Wednesday,.
The results for the companies will follow those of rival Curaleaf (CURLF) on Monday, and a bigger nationwide push toward cannabis legalization.
Green Thumb Earnings
Green Thumb swung to a profit of 10 cents per share, beating by 2 cents, from a year-ago loss of 6 cents a share. Sales rose 85.4% year-over-year to $221.9 million. That was above forecasts for $207.5 million.
The company said that it brought in sales from all 12 states where it operates. The company’s net income more than doubled to $23.3 million.
Adjusted operating EBITDA — or earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization — was $79.3 million for the second quarter. That figure excluded $5.7 million in non-cash stock-based compensation and $7.7 million in expenses related to acquisitions and other costs not related to operations.
Green Thumb said it had cash and cash equivalents of $359.2 million as of June 30. Total outstanding debt was $197.6 million.
Green Thumb is based in Chicago, and has benefited from cannabis sales growth in Illinois, its home market, and Pennsylvania. Recreational marijuana is legal in Illinois. Medical marijuana is legal in Pennsylvania. This week, Green Thumb said it was set to open its 62nd dispensary in the nation.
The company last month also acquired Dharma Pharmaceuticals, marking its first move into Virginia. In May, Green Thumb partnered with Cookies, a popular cannabis grower and dispensary chain, to open a Cookies store on the Las Vegas Strip. Green Thumb also recently expanded into Rhode Island.
Green Thumb raised $217 million in senior debt during the quarter, marijuana stocks analyst at Canaccord noted. And it has been expanding grow operations in New York and New Jersey to prepare for the start of recreational sales, Cowen analysts noted. Analysts there have called Green Thumb Industries stock its top pick.
Trulieve Earnings
Estimates: Wall Street expected Trulieve to earn 31 cents per share, a roughly fivefold increase from a year ago. Sales were expected to jump 74% year over year, and 8% from the prior quarter, to $210.2 million.
Results: Adjusted EBITDA grew 55% to $94.9 million, while net income jumped 116% to $40.9 million. Revenue rose 78% to $215.1 million.
Trulieve’s operations have focused on the medical cannabis market in Florida. The company drew virtually all of its sales from there as of March 31.
Trulieve, in recent weeks, said it had begun growing cannabis in West Virginia and opened its first store in Massachusetts. It also has a handful of pot shops and other operations in Pennsylvania, Connecticut and California. It also recently won a Georgia production licenses.

Marijuana Stocks
Green Thumb stock, which trades in Canada and over the counter, finished 5% lower during the regular session in the stock market today. The stock’s relative strength line, which compares its performance to the S&P 500, has moved sideways over the past several months.
Among other U.S. marijuana stocks, Curaleaf lost 0.3%. Trulieve was down 2.8%. Shares of those names also trade over the counter and in Canada.
Those multistate operators’ fortunes have grown as more U.S. states legalize medical and adult recreational-use cannabis, even as federal prohibition limits access to banking and loans and keeps the industry from taking normal operating expense deductions.
Still, marijuana stocks analysts say that the large U.S. cannabis companies, disciplined by restrictions, have a clearer path to steady profitability than their Canadian counterparts.
Among Canadian marijuana stocks, Canopy Growth (CGC) fell 2.7% on Wednesday. Tilray (TLRY) was down 2.4%.
