Bracket Be Upon Ye

This was really hard to seed because I know half of them will be eliminated round 1 but I don't really want any of them to lose lol. I ended up deciding to dedicate entire quarters to (mostly) yaoi or (mostly) yuri, with yaoi and yuri only going up against each other starting in the semifinals. This is just because most of the yaoi pairings are more popular and if I seeded solely on popularity most of the yuri would be eliminated immediately.

(I'm not trying to misgender Raine, and I'm not gonna label that specific pairing "yaoi" or "yuri"; it's just their partner is a woman and there's no easy way to split up the contestants otherwise.)

Round 1 on the left side will start Sunday, July 23. Matches will start being posted at 10:00 AM CST (15:00 UTC) and last for a week. Right side will be next week after the left side concludes.

Time to start the tournament! Here is our bracket:

I can tell some of these are going to be crazy already. The matchups are randomized so blame the computer if you don't like them. The pictures are always a little small first round, but the matchups will also be listed below the cut of this post. Once the polls are out, they'll link to their designated poll.

Just for the first round, I'm going to split the polls across two days. The first batch will be out on Wednesday, June 5 and the second batch will be out Thursday, June 6. All polls run for a week.

Ultimate Doctor Who Poll Round 1 - Matchup 22

Episode Summaries under the cut

113: Empress of Mars - Season 10, Episode 9: The Doctor, Bill, and Nardole are in NASA headquarters, watching them test a new camera on the surface of Mars, where they see rocks spelling out "God save the Queen". The Doctor tracks the message back to 1881, where they arrive, but the TARDIS takes off with Nardole inside. The Doctor and Bill meet an Ice Warrior and a platoon of Victorian soldiers. The soldiers say that they found the Ice Warrior, Friday's, crashed ship and helped him to repair it in exchange for promised riches back on Mars. The soldiers have been helping him to mine.

Their mining effort finally breaks through a wall, where they discover an Ice Warrior Hive, including the Martian Ice Queen. The Ice Warriors wake up and begin to fight with the British soldiers, but the Doctor deescalates, but peace breaks down when one of the soldiers fires. While everybody else fights, the Doctor, Bill, and one officer are held prisoner, but are freed by Friday.

One soldier takes the queen hostage, but is killed by another soldier to free her. Surprised by this, she decides to show mercy to the humans, and stops the fighting. The Doctor helps the Ice Warriors send a distress call to another planet to get them a ship, and they set out the rocks spelling out God Save the Queen. The TARDIS returns for them, only for them to find that Nardole has released Missy in order to pilot it for him.

144: The Tsuranga Conundrum - Season 11, Episode 5: The Doctor, Ryan, Graham, and Yaz are injured by a sonic mine and wake up on a medical ship 4 days later. The Doctor wants the ship to turn around, as they left the TARDIS behind, but discovers the ship is on auto-pilot, with only medical staff aboard. They discover a small creature aboard doing damage to the ship by eating parts and draining them of power, including the Doctor's sonic screwdriver when she tries to scan it.

The ship detects the creature, called a Pting, and due to the danger it threatens the main hospital if the ship completes it's journey there, begins a self-destruct sequence, which the Doctor works on delaying. They realize the Pting is attracted to energy and that the self-destruct would come from a bomb built into the engine room. The Doctor takes the bomb, which is increasing in power, to attract the Pting and sends it out into space with the Pting following after it.

The hawks circle and whistle overhead. Flags dyed crimson, sapphire, and gold flutter in the crisp autumn wind below them. The three houses have come together again to simulate wars of old, to understand themselves and their history, and to foster camaraderie through competition.

Centuries overlap this moment; the shadows of hundreds of academy students from years past stand here, just as their founders had before. And just as new leaders do today.

A horn sounds from the hills and the field comes alive.

How to Play: Step-by-Step Guide

1. Look at the matchups here. Your combat information, including your inventories, will be found on the doc here.

2. This year, battles will not use TOA's typical combat style. Please read these instructions to get started.

3. Every battle will have at least three losers. There is no way for everyone to win in a tournament like this. If you know that losing and/or rolling poorly will impact your enjoyment, then please contact a mod to be removed from the event. This is for fun, not glory. All participants will receive a prize at the end regardless so long as they do not drop out mid-event.

4. Tag all BOEL posts with #TOABOEL2024

Penalties

The mod team will be implementing a strict 12 hour rule this year. If 12 hours elapse between a teammate's last post and your own, you will be disqualified immediately. Keep your posts short, fast, and make sure you are communicating with your teammates.

Poor sportsmanship, lack of communication, a bad attitude, or being disqualified during this tournament will affect whether or not the mods allow you to participate in future events.

FAQ

How long will rounds last?

The first round will last for 3 days and end at 11:59PM EST on March 19th. The length of subsequent rounds will be determined depending on how the previous round went. It’s possible that a round may end sooner than the designated time limit if all matches in that round are completed before then.

I have multiple characters in the tournament. Will I have to fight myself?

While the mods will be leaving matchups mostly to RNG, we will do our best to make sure that no one has their own characters paired against each other.

Can posts for this event count towards class mastery?

Battle threads for this event will not count towards mastery, even if they meet length/word requirements. This is to incentivize keeping replies short and the rounds moving smoothly. Threads that take place in the medical tent after your muse has been removed from the tournament CAN count toward class mastery, if requirements are met. There is no time limit on these, and they can be as long as you like. All BOEL posts will count for monthly activity.

If my character is not participating in the battle can I still thread with everyone?

Absolutely! Naturally, there will be spectators for the battle, as well as those volunteering to help out in the medical tents. You’re welcome to thread interactions based around either of these.

Will there be prizes at the end?

Yes.

50th Anniversary Celebration of RIIL Super Bowls to Kick-off Sept. 1

August 31, 2022

     A number of events have been planned throughout the high school football season to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first Rhode Island Interscholastic League Super Bowls.

     From 1932 to 1971, the RIIL did not host a post-season football tournament. Instead, the team with the best regular-season record was declared the champion. That all changed in 1972. On Saturday, December 2, 1972, Cranston High School East and Woonsocket High School faced off in the Class A Championship at Brown Stadium, with the Thunderbolts of Cranston East defeating the Villanovans, 35-8. Earlier that day at Pierce Stadium in East Providence, Middletown High School and East Greenwich High School played in the Class B Championship, with the Islanders of Middletown prevailing over the Avengers, 20-7.

     To commemorate the 50th anniversary, the four schools that competed in those 1972 championships will reunite to play the first Injury Fund contests of the 2022 high school football season on Thursday, Sept. 1 at Cranston Stadium. Middletown and East Greenwich will play in the first round-robin matchup at 6 p.m., followed by Cranston East and Woonsocket at 7:30.

    Players who participated in the first Super Bowl games are invited to attend and will be recognized as part of the kick-off celebration.

      Those planning to attend Thursday’s games or any of the other 50th anniversary events listed below are asked to RSVP by emailing: riil50thsb@gmail.com so organizers can plan accordingly. (Participants are encouraged to reach out to as many teammates as possible so they also can be included in the celebration.)

     Proceeds from Thursday’s games will benefit the Rhode Island Interscholastic Injury Fund, which provides financial assistance to athletes, coaches or officials injured in sanctioned interscholastic games and practices. Established in 1947 and the only organization of its kind in the United States, the Injury Fund defrays the cost of medical expenses not covered by the individual’s insurance.

35: Army of Ghosts/Doomsday - Season 2, Episodes 12 & 13: The Doctor takes Rose home for a visit to find that for some time Earth has been visited by "ghosts". He traces their origin to an organization called Torchwood, which was founded to protect the Earth from aliens and specifically, him. The Doctor finds that a mysterious ship ripped a hole in reality that has allowed the ghosts to come through. Some Cybermen hijack the controls, allowing the rest of the ghosts, revealed to be Cybermen from a parallel universe to come through around the world. While Rose separately investigates, she finds Mickey, who had been trapped in the parallel universe with the Cybermen has also come through. Trapped in a room with the mysterious ship, it opens, revealing Daleks inside.

The Daleks and Cybermen confront each other, while trying to force one of the time travelers to open up a device they control that was made by the Time Lords. Mickey accidentally activates it, but in the confusion, he and Rose escape and make their way to the Doctor. The device is a Time Lord prison and release all of the Daleks imprisoned during the Time War. The Doctor goes to the controls where the ghosts were let in and sets them to open a portal to the void between universes, which will suck up everything that's traveled between universes. That would be all of the Daleks and Cybermen, but also includes the Doctor, Rose, and Mickey. The Doctor sends Rose off to the parallel universe to be safe with her mother, parallel father, and Mickey, but she returns to help.

While opening the portal, they try to cling to devices that will keep them steady, but Rose must let go when one of her controls slips and starts to get sucked into the portal. Her parallel father comes back and rescues her, pulling her to the parallel universe. All of the Daleks and Cybermen are destroyed and the portal closes itself, sealing the walls between the worlds. The Doctor manages to send a message through to Rose one last time, but his final words are cut off before he can finish them. He then turns to find a mysterious woman in a wedding dress standing in the TARDIS, unsure of how she got there or who he is.

94: Smith and Jones - Season 3, Episode 1: Medical student Martha Jones goes into work where the Doctor, posing as John Smith, is a patient. It begins to rain around the hospital, but the rain is going upwards. Then the hospital is teleported to the surface of the moon. The Doctor reveals himself as an alien to Martha as alien police, the Judoon, begin to march on the hospital. They are looking for an escaped alien prisoner and scan people to mark them as humans, but their brutal justice causes a panic when they execute anybody who defies them.

The alien, a Plasmavore disguised as an elderly woman, is a shapeshifter who must drink blood to appear human. She kills the head of the hospital, which Martha witnesses and runs off to tell the Doctor. He tells her to alert the Judoon while he goes to confront the Plasmavore. He catches her meddling with the MRI, converting it into a weapon that will kill the Judoon, but will also kill half of the Earth. He tricks her into drinking his blood, which she does. When Martha brings the Judoon to them they scan her, detecting her as non-human and execute her. Martha pleads with the Judoon to save the Doctor or disable the MRI, but they leave.

She revives the Doctor and he is able to disable the MRI. The hospital begins to run out of oxygen, but the Judoon teleport it back to Earth, allowing everybody to survive. Later that night, at a party for her family, Martha sees the Doctor again and he offers to give her one trip in the TARDIS, to which she agrees.

Welcome to the Battle of the Eagle and Lion!

In TOA, this is a tournament-style mini-event where the houses compete to see who will come out on top!

How It Works

This year, battles will be 3v3 instead of 1v1. Characters who have signed up to compete will be randomly assigned two other teammates from their own house and an opponent each round. Who goes first will be determined by speed rolls made at the beginning of each round of battle. This will determine attack order. Whichever team knocks out all of their opponents first, or deals the most damage when the round ends, will be determined the winner and will progress to the next round. Individuals who are KO'd on a winning team will not continue to the next round. The house with the most surviving members at the end of the tournament will claim victory!

More thorough instructions for how the battles work will be posted when Round 1 begins.

How to Join

1. First register your muse(s) here. You will be asked to select the house that your character is currently affiliated with, and this affiliation cannot be changed after registration. If your character is an unaffiliated faculty or an Ashen Wolf, they may choose to support one of the three main houses instead. You will also be asked to select two pieces of D or E rank equipment and one Beginner class for your character.

For this event, your characters will start with 5HP and will be able to bring any D or E rank equipment that they have already claimed. This excludes personal weapons, personal skills, and crests. You will also be able to select a Beginner class that your muse has mastered and apply the mastery abilities that come with it. If your character has not mastered a Beginner class, they will be given Noble/Commoner and HP+. If your character manages to defeat their opponent and advance to the next round, they will be able to select any one piece of equipment or mastery ability from their opponents OR a random item from a roulette that will be offered to your team, regardless of rank and class restrictions, and add it to their inventory for the next round. We hope that this creates some fun and interesting combinations.

Registration will be open from March 8th to 11:59PM EST on March 15th. Let the House Leaders know if you have any questions.

2. The tournament will begin at noon EST on March 16th and run until 11:59PM EST of March 30th. The first round will run from March 16th until 11:59PM EST of March 18th, or until all battles have ended, whichever comes first. Subsequent rounds will have a shorter time limit so that the tournament will reach its conclusion by the end of the month.

3. Wait with bated breath for your opponent to be revealed. We will make a post with the matchups for each round. This will not be a traditional bracket. The winners of each round will be randomized for the next round and so on. Please tag your posts with #toaboel2024.

4. We encourage shorter, faster replies, but unlike past years, all battles will need to be started as a thread. There will be 6 people per thread. All replies, at minimum, will require the roll, the damage, the target, and a brief description of the attack being made. Counterattacks will not be made. Think of these battles like Pokemon Triple/Rotation Battles, where every player's turn is just their own attack. The battle order will be pre-determined by a set of rolls, affected by Speed, at the beginning of every round.

5. If your team successfully knocks all of your opponents out, congratulations! Those of you still standing will progress to the next round with full HP. If your character lost, then join the others in the medical tent. Remember that this is all for fun, so please don’t get upset if your character is KO’d. There are plenty of opportunities to thread with spectators and medical tent visitors while you wait for the tournament to end.

6. This is supposed to be a fast-paced event, so long posts/threads are not necessary. For that reason, battle threads for this event will not count toward mastery regardless of length. All posts will count for the month’s IC requirements though. Please consider whether or not you will be able to actively participate before signing up. It wouldn’t be fun for everyone else if you hold up a round because you don’t have the time to reply to your opponent.

Changes for 2024

These battles are designed to be similar to Pokemon Triple/Rotation battles. Your character's potential targets will be influenced by their weapon range, where melee weapons can only attack an opponent directly in front or beside of them, and ranged weapons can only attack opponents at a diagonal. For example: A B C [Team X] 1 2 3 [Team Y] If B has a melee weapon, they can attack 2, or attack A and C (friendly fire). If B has a ranged weapon, they can attack 1 and 3, but not 2. If B has a mixed weapon, they can attack 1, 2 and 3. Support abilities will work the same way. Rallies and the Heal spell will affect adjacent allies (e.g. B can use a rally on A or C, but C can only use a rally on B), but ranged abilities like Physic will be able to aid allies who are farther away.

Speed will not allow players to double. Instead, they will be given a +[speed] bonus to their turn order rolls at the beginning of each round of battle, which will improve their chances of moving first. If a player has negative speed, they will be pushed down in the turn order.

To assist with the number of moving parts that this event tends to have, we’ll be asking for volunteers to sign up to be Scorekeepers using this form. The volunteers we select will be given a special Scorekeeper role within the server that members can ping if they have questions about their battles and when they finish. The primary jobs of a Scorekeeper will be to make sure that combat is logged uniformly so that the data for the superlative awards can be easily gathered at the end of the event and to check that all math is correct before determining an official winner of a battle. The mods will also have this Scorekeeper role so that we can receive the pings as well.

Due to the short length of the battles, combat arts will be considered used even if they miss.

Several weapons have been modified specifically for BOEL. Please refer to this list for more information on changes to eligible equipment. A separate tab lists the weapons and abilities that have been banned for this tournament.

Keep in mind that while you can sign up as many muses as you want for this event, if the mod team notices you having less than satisfactory activity, (i.e. you are shown to be holding up your teammates and opponents during the duration of any round) we may make the decision to limit the amount of muses you can sign up in future events such as next year's BOEL or any upcoming Arena events.

“Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls of all ages!” The Doctor was standing in the middle of the dojo, cupping his hands to spread the sound better. “We have a very special demonstration for you today! In the red corner, the battlin’ boxer who’ll knock your lights out UNLESS you’ve got the goods. It’s our fish-snatching honeysucker come down from the Underground, BEEEEEEEHUNTER!”

“Alright, let’s do this!” Beehunter was in her usual gear, minus the brass knuckles.

The Announcer (a new role of his) directed the crowd of enthused Operators to her opponent. “And in the blue corner, the grandmaster and heir of an ancient style who’s renowned for her work both on and off the battlefield; normally, she’s packing a pair of metal gauntlets, but tonight, the gloves are coming off! It’s the powerhouse panda who’ll leave you black and white all over, FEEEEEEEEAAAAAter!”

“Thanks for the invite!” She was bouncing on her toes, at least as excited about this matchup as Beehunter was, although she’d decided to wear a more traditional outfit. “This is gonna be exciting!”

“I don’t doubt that one bit. Alright, we’re closing off betting, so once Swire’s given me the thumbs-up...Let’s get this show on the road! One round, fight until your opponent either gives out or gives up. 3...2...1...LET’S RUMBLEEEEEEEE!!!!”

The reason the Doctor called this a special demonstration was obvious from the moment their fists met the first time; Beehunter was a master of the tavern-brawler’s style, using whatever tricks were available to leave her opponents knocked senseless, while FEater, despite her reputation, had not only received classical training, but real combat experience had honed her into a precise weapon with an encyclopedic knowledge of the ways the Universal Fist could bring her opponent to their knees. In theory, this was the ultimate battle of nature versus nurture, instinct versus intellect, and some of the crowd had shown up just to see which would win out.

Most, however, had simply seen the posters Deepcolor had drawn about a no-holds-beared fistfight between the two Operators best known for exercising their right to bear arms while refusing to bear arms, and the number of puns the Doctor had crammed into his marketing pitch had impressed enough people that word had spread like wildfire. If they’d had a proper ring, they could have gotten Siege to dress up and hold the round cards and made this a proper MMA match, but for their purposes? It was probably better this way.

All-in-all, it took Beehunter five minutes of brutal hand-to-hand to finally win the fight, much to the surprise and delight of the audience. Both of them were bruised to hell and back, but Gavial was there to fix them up after the fight (not intentionally, just because she was the Medic most interested with events like this), and once they could both walk off the field of battle, the Doctor and a couple volunteers worked on cleaning things up for the next event (a sparring match between Ch’en and Texas) while the bear-knuckled brawlers went to the locker room.

“Man, that was something!” Beehunter was floating on air after her victory, but she knew how close it’d been. “I mean, I knew from your movies you could fight, but getting to actually feel it was amazing! And some of those takedowns - if you had those gloves on, I would’ve totally died!”

“I’m really impressed you took that fight, Bee. I knew you were good, too, but you totally outdid your reputation out there. Aaaah, I just wished we could’ve done a full three rounds!” FEater was pumped up, too - it didn’t matter who won the fight in the end, what mattered was how incredible the journey had been all the way to the end.

The grizzled veteran nodded. “Yeah, that would’ve- hey, we could, though, couldn’t we?”

“Oh, I wish,” FEater sighed. “I can’t do it today, but maybe later this week?”

“Aww, you’re not up for one now?”

She smirked. “Right now?”

“Yeah, why not?” Bee grinned; they’d both changed out of their clothes and were heading to the showers. “We did it back in the Underground all the time! Some of my best fights happened in baths.”

“Alright, let’s do this, then.” FEater and Beehunter went to the back, where a wall of showerheads were set up, and turned on every other head.

Once everything was set up, the grizzly counted off. “Alright, three, two, one, go!”

“Hyah!” The panda charged forward, only to trip in the middle of the attack; she landed her shot, but instead of a punch, she accidentally tackled Bee to the ground. Neither of them were hurt that much, but FEater’s head was firmly lodged in her opponent’s chest for a few moments. She sat up once she came to her senses, breathing heavily. “Is that going to happen a lot?”

“Yeah, probably. Still wanna do it?” Beehunter was no longer focused on the fight.

FEater followed her eyes and chuckled. “Eyes up here, Bee.”

“I’ve made my choice,” she smiled back. “Which of us is bigger, though...”

“I think I have a better idea for what we can do while we’re here,” the panda announced, crawling hand-and-knee back to Beehunter.

Her target sat up, arching her back. “Oh do you now?”

“Yep!” FEater went straight from her crawl to wrapping her arms around Bee’s neck, pulling her head into her chest with a giggle. “I may not be able to top you in a fight, but I bet I can have you screaming ‘Uncle.’”

“You’re on, starlet!” Beehunter pushed her back, and the rest...is probably a bit too steamy for this Tumblr blog.

NBA to restart 2019-20 season with 22 teams returning to play

The NBA Board of Governors today approved a competitive format to restart the 2019-20 season with 22 teams returning to play and a tentative start date of Friday, July 31.  The Board’s approval is the first formal step among many required to resume the season.

The NBA is working to finalize a comprehensive season restart plan with the National Basketball Players Association.  The NBA and the NBPA are working with infectious disease specialists, public health experts and government officials to establish a rigorous program to prevent and mitigate the risk related to COVID-19, including a regular testing protocol and stringent safety practices.  The season restart is also contingent on an agreement with The Walt Disney Company to use Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, Florida, as a single site for a campus for all games, practices and housing for the remainder of the season.

Based on the competitive format that the NBA Board of Governors approved today, the 22 returning teams would be the 16 teams (eight per conference) in current playoff positions and the six teams that are currently six games or fewer behind the eighth seed in their respective conferences.  Those two groups comprise teams with the NBA’s 22 best records.

“The Board’s approval of the restart format is a necessary step toward resuming the NBA season,” said NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.   “While the COVID-19 pandemic presents formidable challenges, we are hopeful of finishing the season in a safe and responsible manner based on strict protocols now being finalized with public health officials and medical experts.  We also recognize that as we prepare to resume play, our society is reeling from recent tragedies of racial violence and injustice, and we will continue to work closely with our teams and players to use our collective resources and influence to address these issues in very real and concrete ways.”

The season restart would begin with eight “seeding games” for each returning team and include the possibility of a play-in tournament for the eighth and final playoff seed in each conference depending on combined records across regular-season games and seeding games.  Once the 16-team playoff field is set, the NBA Playoffs would proceed in a traditional conference-based format with four rounds and best-of-seven series in each round.  The NBA Finals would end no later than Oct. 12.   (See below for the list of returning teams and additional details.)

If, as tentatively scheduled, the season resumes on July 31, then the 2020 NBA Draft Lottery would be rescheduled for Aug. 25, the 2020 NBA Draft would be held on Oct. 15 and the 2020-21 NBA regular season would likely begin on Dec. 1, 2020.

The 14 NBA Lottery teams would be the eight teams that do not participate in the restart and the six teams that participate in the restart but do not qualify for the playoffs.  These teams would be seeded in the lottery and assigned odds based on their records through games of March 11.  The 16 playoff teams would draft in inverse order of their combined records across regular-season games and seeding games.

NBA Season Restart: Competitive Format Plan

The 22 returning teams for the season restart would be the Milwaukee Bucks, Toronto Raptors, Boston Celtics, Miami Heat, Indiana Pacers, Philadelphia 76ers, Brooklyn Nets, Orlando Magic and Washington Wizards from the Eastern Conference and the Los Angeles Lakers, LA Clippers, Denver Nuggets, Utah Jazz, Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets, Dallas Mavericks, Memphis Grizzlies, Portland Trail Blazers, New Orleans Pelicans, Sacramento Kings, San Antonio Spurs and Phoenix Suns from the Western Conference.

Each returning team would play eight seeding games, as selected from its remaining regular-season matchups.  At the conclusion of the seeding games, the seven teams in each conference with the best combined records across regular-season games and seeding games would qualify for the playoffs.

If the team with the eighth-best combined record in its conference is more than four games ahead of the team with the ninth-best combined record in the same conference, then the team with the eighth-best record would earn the eighth playoff seed.

If the team with the eighth-best combined record in its conference (Team A) is four games or fewer ahead of the team with the ninth-best combined record in the same conference (Team B), then Teams A and B would compete in a play-in tournament to determine the eighth playoff seed.  To earn the eighth playoff seed, Team A would need to defeat Team B once and Team B would need to defeat Team A two games in a row.

The 2019-20 season would conclude with a traditional playoff format with best-of-seven series in the first round, conference semifinals, conference finals and the NBA Finals.
