CHECKLIST: Media Pitching

1. Keep it short and sweet.

I’ve learned verily quickly that a key component of a great media pitch is keeping it short and simple.  Editors don’t have time to read through long-winded emails - get to the point right away. All you need is a great hook to receive a bite.   

2. Personalize your pitch.

No one wants to receive a pitch that isn’t tailored to their interests / what they write about. Make sure you tailor each and every pitch you send out to your contacts’ individual beats. For example, I’ve had great luck mentioning a recent tweet or instagram photo that they’ve posted when pitching - it shows you’re engaged in their content and are paying attention to what they have to say!

3. Make use of a great subject line.

This is the first thing someone will see when they notice your email in their inbox, so make it count! Make sure it’s engaging as it is essentially the first hook and difference between them opening your email right away or leaving it for later.  

4. Link to the most recent press release about the client you’re pitching.

Including a link to the most recent press release about your client is a great and easy way to share more information without going on and on in an email. I’ve found this to be extremely effective and, in fact, when not included it is often asked for later in the conversation.

5. Follow-up.

Editors / writers typically receive an overwhelming amount of pitches a week so don’t be surprised if you don’t get a response right away. Rather than just waiting to receive a response (because often you won’t) follow-up in a timely manner.  I usually like to follow-up about a week after sending out a media pitch.
