Back in August 2022, Hannah’s van shut off by itself in the middle of a busy street. The computer system that allows her to drive the van with hand controls had failed. She was stranded.

Hannah has Muscular Dystrophy, and uses a power wheelchair full-time, meaning that she needs a wheelchair-accessible vehicle to commute or travel anywhere. For the past 12 years, Pequod, her fully modified van, has allowed her to get anywhere she needed to go. Hannah drove it through college and grad school, to and from her teaching position at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, and across state lines to her new house in a small town outside Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where she lives with her husband, Jared, and a ridiculous shepherd-corgi mix named Pumpkin.

Despite the van's most valiant efforts, these vehicles are only designed to work for 10 years, and while Hannah and Jared were grateful to see it last an additional two years, they now find themselves without reliable transportation. They do not live in a city with public transit, so without an accessible van, Hannah is essentially homebound.

As her friends, we have decided to help her ask for help, because a new van with the modifications she and her chair require (a lowered floor, a ramp installation, and EZ-lock restraint system) costs upwards of $75,000. The vast majority of that will have to be paid upfront. For a variety of reasons, Hannah and Jared have decided not to get a van with the computer system and hand controls this time, which would have added another $35,000 to the total cost. This will not be one she can drive, but they have weighed the pros and cons and decided they can make it work.

So It's my second round of chemo for the stage 1 breast cancer they found when I went in for my gyno/mammogram this year (which may remember being the first I actually did since before lock down, thank god I did and they found it early and small).

First my nurse is also at the tail end of a long series of shifts (so she says after disappearing to god knows where) so she's rarely the one checking on me. I think I different nurse came in to stop the beeping and 'go find ana' each time.

It's fine though, I was receiving care I needed, just minor annoyance.

Then I had a bad reaction to the chemo drug, felt like I had a chest burster under my sternum and I NEEDED to cough but couldn't (I could breathe fine tho) and my face heated up and turned bright red. My husband just opened the door looking panicked and then 4 nurses (not ana) and the nurse practitioner just fucking appeared as if by magic, it felt like. Stopped the drip (at this point I was back to normal) , gave me an antihistamine, waited a bit and then restarted the drip at a slower pace.

Next I hear from down the hall "where the hell were you, you started her on a chemo drip", y'all I do not have the world for the vitriolic anger the nurse practitioner's voice was doing when she asked that. ana said something quieter, and the very still angry nurse practitioner said something even quieter.

Boy howdy was she johnny on the spot after this point (this is when I got the working a double long day so sorry. Honestly, still don't care I was taken care of, just not by her. Whatever I'm fine rest of the day goes fine, grab curbside takeaway from a restaurant down the road from the hospital.

Then I get stuck in 'go go go slow slow slow' stop and go traffic.

Some guy coming off the express lane didn't get the slow slow slow memo in enough time and rear ended me (I'M FINE). I do think he just about shit himself when he saw the bandage across my chest from my medi port, the chemo hat and the hospital band I was wearing.

We decided since my car had white paint scuff and no damage (his license plate fell off and a crack in the grill but no real damage) we would just not deal with insurance or reporting it (i just wanted to go home I know I should have like gotten pictures or video of this agreement, but y'all i just wanted to eat).
