So, like, Undertale was about ludonarrative dissonance and the idea of video game characters as breakable toys. If you kill one monster, any one monster, an insignificant cannon-fodder enemy – you are now locked out of the Good Ending. The other monsters will remember it. They’ll hate you for it. Chase down a geno route and people will call you horrible, to your face, not just because of what you’re doing but because of your very nature. You’re an anomaly, a super-powered time god, and you got bored so you did this. What does that mean? What’s the relationship between the player and the NPCs?

Deltarune, OTOH, appears to be about, Level 1, the relationship between the player and the protagonist. Where’s the line, who is who, what could the experience be like for a sentient being if they’re aware of you, etc.

However, Level 2, it’s about the relationship between the player and the structure of the game itself. Playing a game gives you a certain freedom compared to other narratives but you’re still fundamentally locked in to one path, no matter what you decide to do. You can punch everyone you encounter in the face and it will change basically nothing about the final outcome. It’s barely even noticed, despite the fact that it’s a weird fucking thing to do, because the game doesn’t—can’t—account for that level of gritty details. There’s one ending, and you’re getting it no matter what you do. You get to walk around in your cart, but you’re still on rails.

This is thematically evident throughout the entire Dark World—Ralsei vs. the Prophecy vs. the player’s wants, the idea of The Prophecy as this cosmic thing and you as a larger-than-life hero, etc. But nowhere is it more obvious than in Snowgrave. 

The Dark World is, within the world of the game, a toy universe. It’s a story and setting all carefully crafted to serve, and make happy, the Lightners above. But it can’t account for everything, and the Weird Route is—not necessarily breaking the game, but pushing at the very edges of intended gameplay. Like, you can’t just stumble into a Weird Route. It’s basically impossible to come across accidentally unless you’re doing the weirdest, most evil shit that’s allowed to you in the game, on purpose— “to see what happens,” sure, but I think anyone who goes through the trouble of unlocking that route is specifically looking for the game to acknowledge it. It’s the same impulse that makes people clip out of bounds and activate buried files. If you go through and methodically freeze everything you can, lock off entire NPCs and push Noelle to her breaking point, eventually something will happen, right?

And it does. The Dark World panics. Key players are missing or nonfunctional and it certainly doesn’t make sense for the plot to continue on as normal with a fun mechafight if there’s a citywide crisis happening and half the population is frozen solid. But what can the Dark World do? It didn’t plan for this! You hit the very edge of what it allowed for and it’s starting to fray. Like, I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Spamton is the one who seizes control at the end of the Weird Route—the only one in Cyberworld who has seen beyond the edges of the world and never fully came back from it. It’s also not an accident that towards the end of the route the plot starts to feel like a non sequitur. The plot has become secondary—the important thing is the way the whole world, structurally, is reacting. You’re so close to jumping the rails, making the game do something new instead of the same single ending—but what happens to everything else when you focus solely on that?

What’s the one thing Jevil, Spamton, and Kris all have in common? They’re all obsessed with freedom.
