The most famous of Hellmuth Walter's rocket motors was the Kiel Kommandogesellschaft HWK 109-509A-2 bi-propellant liquid-fuelled rocket motor that powered the Messerschmitt Me.163 Komet.

Test pilot Rudolf Opitz works on his Messerschmitt Me 163 Komet. It remains the only operational rocket powered fighter aircraft in history and the first piloted aircraft of any type to exceed 1,000 kilometres per hour (620 mph) in level flight. In 1944 unofficial records show he reached a top speed of over 1200kmh (745 mph)

Messerschmitt Enzian - RAF Museum Cosford by Alan Wilson Via Flickr: WW2 German Surface-to-Air guided missile Designed to be launched into enemy bomber formations then guided to a target and detonated by a proximity fuse. It was originally proposed as an alternative to the Me163 Komet and underwent testing but was not perfected and did not go into active service. This is one of only two known to survive and is on display in Hangar 1 at the RAF Museum Cosford, Shropshire, UK. 14th August 2016

In WW2, the rocket-powered, tailless Messerschmitt Me163 Komet interceptor was on the leading edge of aerospace technology — its mission, a last-ditch German effort to defend the Reich.
Last year, on a visit organised by the Royal Aeronautical Society's Munich Branch, we had the opportunity to interview one of the few surviving Me163 pilots, Dr Reinhard Opitz, on his experiences in flying this rare aircraft, within the apt surroundings of the Messerschmitt Museum at EADS/Cassidian Manching. The Museum, on the EADS facility, is home to the EADS Heritage Flight, a unique collection showcasing part of German aeronautical history.

Two comets tracking in front of you... That is two Messerschmitt Me 163 Komets. Described as if flying in a runaway train, it was the first rocket power Fighter to surpass 1000km/hr. With only a powered flight time of 10mins or so it would rocket to a high elevation and then hit Allied Bomber formations before having to glide back to base. So we love the #ME163 it was the first model in our XPS Kit Range
Technology moved on and more of you wanted either a dedicated #Turbine or a Prop Jet model
So we drew a big breath and went back to Cad and Re designed it
We are pretty please with ourselves
So first This 1/15 Scale 1850mm Wingspan Model is based around a White GRP fuselage
Fuselage GRP has rivets and panel line details,

1944 09 11 Messerschmitt Me163 Komet Attack - Mark Postlethwaite
Launched on a trolley by mixing two highly volatile and lethal chemicals together, the ‘Komet’ would zoom skywards and then glide down to attack any enemy aircraft it could find. The incident depicted was a typical sortie where the pilot, Uffz Kurt Schiebeler was launched to intercept a B-17 that had flown over the airfield. In total, he made four gliding attacks on the B-17 which crashed nearby. The Komet had been in the air for just 15 minutes during this combat which took place on 11 September 1944.

1944 10 Rocket Attack - Nicolas Trudgian
It required more than a little nerve to fly a fighter into the barrage of fire sprayed out by the gunners of a box of B17 bombers; it took even greater courage to do so in the rocket propelled Me163 Komet. With rocket science still in its infancy, these small aircraft were still in the experimental stage, and piloting what amounted to a flying bomb was in itself a perilous business, let alone flying them into combat. But these were desperate times. The day and night bombing assault on Germany was bringing the mighty war machine to its knees, and aything that might help stem the tide was thrown into battle. Powered by a mixture of two highly volatile chemicals, the slightest leak, or heavy landing could cause a huge explosion, and the mix was so corrosive that in the event of even a minor accident, the pilot could literally be dissolved. Sitting in a cramped cockpit, surrounded by dangerous chemicals and ammunition, the intrepid aviator would be launched into the sky on what was, at best, a four minute mission. After, hopefully, engaing the enemy, he would glide powerlessly back to the nearest airfield to be refuelled so as to attempt the hazardous operation all over again. Though limited to a handful of victories, the Komet did make the Allied crews wonder what else the Luftwaffe had hidden up its sleeve, and had the distinction of being the forerunner of aircraft technology that eventually took aircraft into space. Capable of nearly 600mph and climbing to 30,000ft in less than two minutes, this tiny rocket propelled Me163 Komet was typical of Germany's ingenuity in its desperate attempts to stem the havoc being wreaked by the USAAFs daylight bombers.
