10. What work was the quickest to write?

If we disregard the many works under 1k, some of which actually took quite a while to write, I think it was: you'd never forget me (Fallout: New Vegas, Christine/Veronica, 1.5k, written for anneapocalypse in the Chocolate Box exchange). It came together in like a day, which is pretty fast for me? I was like, ah, so many Veronica feelings suddenly.

17. Your favorite character to write this year?

Trexel Geistman from Stellar Firma, by a narrow but appreciable margin. It's easy to tell when I'm writing Trexel because I'm cackling to myself the entire time. Despite the veer from Stellar Firma to Dragon Age earlier this year, I have in no way exhausted my interest in exploring his character.

Trexel's got it all: grandiosity, unnecessary combativeness, a bottomless thirst for attention and also alcohol, a near inability to be honest about his deepest feelings despite how obvious they might be to those around him, a complete inability to be on time to anything, self-hatred that he works out in incredibly unproductive ways, a murderous streak, and Verbal Creativity. And sometimes he randomly bursts into song! I love him. I need to do a re-listen soon so I can get mad at myself for misrepresenting him here.

26. What’s your most common category?

For just this year it was M/M (17 works), followed by Gen (11 works)! For all years it is Gen (62 works), followed closely by M/M (59 works). I initially entered fic fandom as a femslasher, many years ago, so this is a bit funny to me, even after so many years of this trend.

I hope things change in the Church of England and soon. What they believe in should never dictate how others live their lives and they should be supportive of people in general, but in special those who are part of the CoE (i read that many are leaving). And when it comes to the BRF, I would give the partner of the Royal the secondary title (If the Prince/ss gets a Dukedom, their partner takes the Earldom from their partner). Would that need to go through the Parliament or is it The Queen's decision?

So as I mentioned, I don’t think the Church of England could legally stop them from having a same sex partner and being monarch at the same time. They'd be annoyed, sure, but there are bishops who are in same sex relationships and civil partnerships are no impediment to being in the line of succession by the Church’s own admission. The actual issue for me is in the law. In order for things to be equal, the government would either have to change the law around surrogacy (which I don't seem them doing as it would have much broader implications) or they would have to allow adopted children to take equal rights. That is something I have called for in the past myself on many occasions (and faced a lot of opposition from the fandom; some people are really wedded to this idea of "blood" being important yada yada). Imagine George adopted a baby who was born and raised in his home, taken to engagements etc. Now also imagine that a few years after the baby was adopted he had a biological child who was taken straight from its mother's arms and put in a separate home and only got to re-enter society and be with George at age 18. The idea that that younger child would automatically have a right to the throne and the older child wouldn't is absurd to me. There would certainly have to be considerations - you couldn't adopt someone older than the heir and have them displace the heir, for example - but it's completely doable and morally right to me. And it's particularly frustrating given royals have a loooong history of adopting heirs or just randomly appointing people to the throne and yet we seem to have become more backwards and outdated in our views on adoption these days.

In terms of your other question, I'm not sure what you mean by "the secondary title." Are you talking about the courtesy title? Like right now there's Viscount Severn who uses his father's subsidiary titles as a courtesy. So would you be suggesting that if James became Earl of Wessex and married a man, the man would be Viscount Severn? If so then that wouldn't really possible. The spouse using that Viscount Severn title would imply that he owns it in his own right or is the heir to the senior title, which is not the case. People have proposed similar ish things in the past and it’s always failed because the right wing don’t want to change it and the left wing don’t want to give more people titles when they oppose the system itself (which is similar to what happened in Sweden when they changed the line of succession, many on the left wing abstained from the vote because they disagreed with anyone being in line to the throne). And both parties agree that it’s not something that would be a burning issue with their constituents given the fact the partner of a peer is already “elevated” in society. Basically they don't think that pursuing something that only impacts a few of the most powerful people in the country would be a good use of time.

A decade that was - looking back at 10 years

I have just enough introspection left in me to pull this off - let's look at what fanfic disasters I've put out over the last ten years, shall we?

2010 & 2011

I was between fandoms at the time, but I had a Criminal Minds kick for a while.

Immutability: Once part of the team, always part of the team. That's what Spencer told himself as he walked up the stairs.

Branching Out (Criminal Minds/Stargate): Jennifer Jareau's first day as liaison for the Department of Defense really wasn't what she expected.

In Darkness (Criminal Minds/Harry Potter): To the world around him, Aaron Hotchner is a (somewhat) normal FBI agent, with a somewhat normal son and a moderately normal life. He's never told his team who he was... before. When he was known as Aaron Black.

These Small Bones (Doctor Who/Harry Potter): It starts with a girl. With him, it usually does.

2012

I dabble in time travel with this next one, and I still really like how the paradoxes of time hold up.

Marking Time (Doctor Who/White Collar): These are the things Peter Burke knows about Neal Caffrey's beginnings. None of these things are true.

Next up, a little four-part Criminal Minds series, featuring Spencer Reid (genderswapped) 

Fragility Optional: Given all that's happened, you'd think no one would expect Spencer Reid to put on high heels and slink out undercover.

But this was also the year that Avengers came out, and my love for Natasha Romanoff sent me down an amazing rabbit hole for the next couple of years, an Avengers/Stargate crossover series in which Natasha Romanoff was John Sheppard’s mother. And that was the least complicated part of it.

A Widow's Tale series (a 10-part series)

The main pieces of this series are Widow Maker, Baba Yaga's Children, and Old Soldiers, the other bits and bobs lead up to it. 

I also dabbled in a bit of Teen Wolf this year, starting Child of the Wolf (Avengers/Teen Wolf) and getting the first five chapters out the door in November-December before I got stymied - I would come back to this 7 years later, see below.

Child of the Wolf (MCU/Teen Wolf): Caught between hunters and werewolves, Stiles almost doesn’t have time to wonder much about the hot new redheaded Deputy Sheriff or the bow-wielding sarcastic gym teacher. Almost.

2013

Before Agent Carter came out, I wrote a Peggy Carter biopic, going off the riff of, what if Peggy had touched the Tesseract and stopped aging? It's two-thirds done.

Rhapsody in Blue: For decades, Peggy Carter has had only two constants in her life: Howard Stark, and the Winter Soldier.

2014

Agents of Shield came out and as I tend towards dark-haired girls with mysterious powers, I latched onto Skye for five minutes. Here's a quick installment...

Hell's Gate: In the wake of revelations of Skye’s past, Phil Coulson wasn’t expecting to find out what happened to Skye’s parents, and certainly not from a former Russian agent turned SHIELD operative showing up unannounced on his plane.

And oh! I finished Inevitable! My Anita Blake/Harry Potter epic, started in 2005 and in limbo for a number of years, I finally got it wrapped! Although, epic; I am fast closing in on its wordcount with Hour of the Wolf.

Inevitable (Anita Blake/Harry Potter): A late-night run-in with werewolves in the woods outside St. Louis dumps Harry Potter into a whole new world of trouble. Now Anita Blake has to deal with a new charge as well as Death-Eaters come to town.

Also in 2014 I started my baby, Hands of Clay, my Stucky kid!fic in which I attempt to give Bucky and Steve a happy ending, and Natasha and Clint happy childhoods.

Hands of Clay: James Barnes leads a busy life as a single working father in New York. But when his childhood best friend Steve Rogers falls back into his life, James will have to re-learn what love, friendship and family are really all about.

Also randomly I wrote a small Night Court fusion with the Avengers that I still love and am including it in the list.

Then Thor: The Dark World came out and after I punched a wall at yet another MCU mother getting fridged (Frigga, fridged, get it?) I started a resurrection fix-it featuring Loki’s children on earth, that was going to be great only I lost momentum, but the structure of this were good.

Hel's Bones: Magic pulled Frigga back from the realm of the dead, but not even Loki's children can shield her from the consequences of long-ago actions coming back to haunt her.

2015-2016 

the rest of 2014-2016 were consumed with Hands of Clay. But then! Tumblr caught my eye with a figure skating anime, and after the longest time, I checked it out. Which led to

2017-2018

when my Yuri on Ice! phase began. 

First up, we have the Blood in the Water series:

Water's Edge: For years, Yuuri had heard people say Viktor’s skating was otherworldly. He never thought they were being literal.

Undertow: Viktor Nikiforov has spent his entire life pretending to be normal. It's never enough.

There Be Dragons: Seven-year-old Otabek knew two things - he wasn't really related to a dragon, and he was never going to fall in love. Things like that belonged only in fairy tales.

A Late Frost: The one thing that Yuuri didn't expect about the World Figure Skating Championships in Boston was that beating two world records and winning a gold medal was going to be the easy part. (WIP) 

I also wrote a bunch of YOI one-shots: 

Midnight Salchow: Yuuri is convinced he has hidden his shameful past as a writer of Viktor Nikiforov RPF. Yuuri is mistaken.

Eight Days A Week: okay but a nanny!AU where Viktor has somehow acquired a bushel of children and needs a nanny to help care for his screaming brood - enter Yuuri, freshly retired from what he thinks was a failed figure skating career, and in desperate need of money to help pay off his student loans.

Sex Maniac: Katsuki Yuuri, Grand Prix silver medalist and a sorry example of a human being, was seventy percent sure that sleeping with Viktor Nikiforov had turned him into a sex maniac.

The Trials of Anteros: Of course Yuuri knew about Viktor’s hockey-playing twin brother; everyone in the figure skating world did. But given that Viktor had never mentioned the man, Yuuri never expected to get home one day after practice to find Vladimir Nikiforov cluttering up their apartment.

An Uncertain Arabesque: Yuuri never went to the banquet. Viktor never looked into the eyes of a beautiful, sloshed Japanese figure skater, never had the spark brought back into his life with the idea of coaching, and of love.  Viktor never saw the gash in the ice, not in the last minute of his free program at Russian Nationals, and couldn’t prevent his blade from catching in the depression, sending him to the ice with a broken knee and a ruined skating career. Viktor never saw any of it coming.

Silver and Glass: February 14, the Four Continents started in two days, and Yuuri was freaking out. Valentine's Day was the least of his worries... or so he thought.

and lastly, the fantasy swordmaster AU that consumed my summer vacation in 2018:

Turn, Archer, and Heed the Wild Hunt (MCU/Chronicles of Narnia): In the summer of 1983, Clint Barton goes to live with his new foster mom in the middle of nowhere, Iowa. Now he just needs to figure out how negotiate this new life... and also what's up with all the strange things happening in the night.

And as I mentioned in yesterday’s, post, 2019 was the year of salt, in which I got cheesed off at Avengers: Endgame and resurrected Child of the Wolf, and then started my current obsession with time travel and other paradoxes:

Hour of the Wolf (MCU/Teen Wolf): Allison Stark has spent her entire life trying to live up to her father's sacrifice. But when the universe itself starts to dissolve, desperation and magic come together to push Allison back in time to try to right the wrongs.

- Personally I think he dances even better than Rain. I think when Kai comes out as a Solo it's gonna be no joke. He has the feels of Rain+Seven combined (T/n: Rain and Seven are two of South Korea's most loved male Dance Singers in mid-2000s era)

Amazing Spider-Man #243 is never gonna be in anyone’s top 10 issues/stories. It won’t even be in anyone’s top 50. Even if you do a best Roger Stern’s Spider-Man list, this won’t come close to the top. But this is without a doubt my favorite Spider-Man issue of all time.

Not that I think it’s the most action packed, or most emotional, or even all that impressive on an objective level. It’s essentially a day in the life of Spider-Man issue, without any big villains or fights, and a twist at the end I’ll get too. But in this story was everything I love about the webslinger as well as a personal connection I wasn’t expecting.

We start it off with Peter dealing with relationship troubles as Mary Jane re-enters his life at the wrong moment. As always, Peter tries his best, and even helps out a rival get his relationship sorted out. But as a result of his kindness, his own relationships become more complicated.

Amy completely disappears from the narrative after this, as far as I remember, but MJ is here to stay and keep Peter on his toes. In an interview with Roger Stern, he said he never wanted Peter and MJ to hook up, and just saw her as someone to come in and occasionally pull the rug out from under Peter. While I’m glad that didn’t come to pass, I think I can sort of see where he was going with that.

Mary Jane could provide a constant feeling of things being off balance or messy. She shows up in just one scene and she already makes a fairy complicated situation spiral out of control. And their history together combined with a genuine friendship would have been a case of having your cake and eating it too; Stern could keep Peter a free bachelor while also giving him someone who, depending on the story, either be a trusted friend he could confess too, or someone that shakes things up for drama. Again, I prefer Spider-Marriage, but I could see the appeal of this dynamic.

So with Peter’s personal life on the downturn he decides, like usual, to blow off steam by web-slinging. First making a quick stop to get help with a minor villain problem from last issue (that goes nowhere) from Curt Connors. While there, Spidey’s professor comes in and he is able to sneak a peak at his grades because he’s been having academic trouble, and is surprised to find that he passed the exam with an A. Elated, he bounces around the city in dynamic panels I wish we saw more of in his comics.

I’ll talk about this more down below, but I think so many people get obsessed with a miserable Peter, the plaything of misfortune, that they forget he gets win, on a fairly consistent basis. Of course sometimes people over-correct and make him a clown, but again I’ll talk about that later. 

Anyway all good things must end, and he ends up going to stop a somewhat mundane crime (it was a terrorist attack on the church). With little effort, he saves the day, and even gets thanked for his help, which is a welcome change of pace from the constant slander. Again, small victories. He develops picks for the Bugle, and with prospective money in hand, he visits Black Cat and contemplates his future both with her, and his general financial future. 

Other people have commented on this better than me, but Spidey’s sense of responsibility and duty doesn’t just come down to fighting villains. He feels responsible for those closes to him, and the next few panels where he debates his options are a nice encapsulation of that. John Romita Jr. has a nice trick where he uses several clocks around the city to show Peter contemplate for literally hours as he swings around. He isn’t just about to randomly do things, even if it’s to help others. He thinks it through until he’s almost neurotic from over thinking.

His mind made up, he goes to his college to make a request and the issue ends on this:

Here is everything I want from a Spider-Man issue/arc/run. Complicated relationships, love drama, interesting side characters with their own stories, action, a sense of fun and energy, and hard decisions. And that last one is most important of all, because that is what I think was essential to me ‘getting’ Spider-Man.

I liked Spider-Man, and thought he was a fun character, but I had never made a big connection with him. I bought into a lot of fandom opinion that Spidey is just a woe-is-me, kind hearted, light character. Someone to enjoy in a small bursts, but not on the level of other great characters I loved like Daredevil and, especially, Superman. But #243 changed that and I think it comes from the fact I was in the same headspace as Peter when I first read this.

I won’t go super personal, but I was coming to what I thought was the end of my college career, and to say I was anxious was an understatement. I felt I had no future, no prospects, and no choices. I was depressed. But when I read this issue, I was stunned. Peter was making a decision similar to mine, and grappling with the same problems and fears as me. And he made his choice and what’s more, he lived with it. The choice had ramifications for more than just an arc, or even Roger Stern’s run, it affected him for, both in-universe and out, years of time. But you know what, despite the problems it dealt him, he made the most of it. More still, that choice opened opportunities he probably wouldn’t have had if he made a different one. This was so different from other characters, comic or otherwise, that I read. It was more real. More relatable.

And it was at that point that I think I ‘got’ Spider-Man. He isn’t relatable in the sense he is exactly like you. Or in the sense he is always suffering, either comically or tragically. He’s relatable because he, like us, makes deeply human choices. 

All good characters are forced to makes choices of course, but his aren’t often on fate of the world stuff like the FF or Avengers. His choices are often things like who to trust and forgive or career and relationships decisions. And these choices can be tough and complicated in a way that other characters don’t have to grapple with. There aren’t usually any easy answers, and sometimes the consequences are genuinely horrible and unlucky. But like us, Peter has to deal with them the best he can and move on. 

And I think I love this more than any other aspect of Spider-Man. There is no real set status quo; he grows and changes and enters new areas of life. And sometimes it’s scary and unpredictable, but Spider-Man helped me realize you can keep moving forward. He made that decision in college, and he made a lot more after it. Decisions to get married, or where to live, or dealing with new people in his life, good and bad. And because he lived with those decisions to even middle-age (because I consider Spider-Girl semi-canon) I know I can too.

1 year later: SM last boy group NCT

For some unknown reason, my post about NCT being SM last boy group a year ago has gathered a lot of unexpected attention. After having a reread, I’ve realised that I don’t remember writing half of it lol. I also found out that I may have slightly misunderstood the concept of NCT/NCT U. Now that I’m much more certain with my understanding of this system, I feel like the post deserves an update. 

First reason to update, I need to make clear that I was writing the original post under the pressure of the massive hate towards Taeyong at the time. But I do stand by my explanation for SM boy group history. Note that I’m only talking about marketing promotion and not group concept. 

I feel like over times, the boys also got better with introducing their group and their system, which has made it much clearer for me. Now, I will attempt to explain NCT for those who are still confused. Skip the lengthy intro (can refer to whatever Doyoung said), the group first debuted with the unit NCT U. According to the boys, this is a concept group. The line up is not fixed and will change according to who fit to perform a specific song the most. But that got me thinking, what concept? NCT U debuted with 2 songs of 2 completely different genres. Also, not every song in NCT 127 album is sung by all 9 127 members. So what exactly forbids a song like Without U from being in an NCT 127 album while Mad City is? This is when I understood that it’s not the concept, but the forever changing line up of NCT U that’s the main focus. 

Let’s talk about Lucas. Lucas was born in 1999. He’s the same age with Mark, also a foreigner and was in SM before Chenle. But Chenle was debuted before him, under NCT Dream which is also another concept group. This can be easily explained as anyone can tell he’s no fit for this concept at first glance. According to the system of NCT, they will gradually debut units with a permanent line up to promote locally in different countries all over the world. Right now, we only have one unit that functions as described, which is NCT 127 promoting in Seoul, Korea. So when Lucas actually debuts, he will be a permanent member in a fixed line up for a permanent unit some elsewhere not Korea. In other words, Lucas will never have the opportunity to promote in the domestic market of Kpop, and this applies to every future NCT members (since they have emphasised 127 will have no further change in the line up). And since there are more of the world than Korea, eventually, the majority of NCT members will be active abroad and 127 becomes the minority. 

If you’ve been around long enough, you’d know that the Korean domestic market may be smaller in size (which is the initial reason for the expansion of Hallyu wave) but it is very important. It’s not just about the Korean version of their MV has more views. International fans, in general, are much more well aware of promotional activities in Korea. Though severely oversaturated and more competitive, contents in this market are also much easier to reach. SM, being a Korea based entertainment company, also has much more advantages promoting in their home ground. Take Xiumin for instance. Once upon a time, he was the least famous member in EXO, believe it or not. This was because of his lack of exposure in the domestic market + immediate focus of promotion in China +  language barrier. But once SM changes their marketing strategy and have EXO promoted altogether, his popularity immediately rocketed. He’s huge huge huge in Korea at the moment and his personal fandom as a whole grew incredibly. As an individual artist, Xiumin can promote freely anywhere in the world right now and his fans would voluntarily follow to support. 

With that in mind, I believe that SM created NCT U and NCT Dream as gateways to debut all of NCT members. With the exception of Yuta, Winwin and Johnny who are in the 127 line up and are obviously exposed to the domestic market, every NCT members will have to debut through U and/or Dream. NCT Dream is pretty straight forward, as they are serving the early-SHINee-esque niche. Their advantage is that a fixed group can never take on this concept for too long. While SHINee music grew to be more mature as they age, Dream can carry on capitalising this concept with their graduation system. But their disadvantage is that the concept is quite restricted. While you have trainee like Mark who can swing anyway, such golden boy isn’t easy to come across. There’d be more trainees fall under the Lucas category: unfitting of Dream image. This is when NCT U comes to play. U offers these trainees the chance to promote in Korea before debuting in their foreign based unit. The line up of NCT U will vary, combining already existing members and introduces new ones. Promotion would be/should be full scale, which includes music shows, variety appearances, fan signs, etc. Basically, both of these units are to give future NCT members exposure in the domestic market. 

How exactly does this work? The three units that were established during the first year of NCT is the core to this system. 

NCT Dream and NCT U are gateways to release new future NCT members. Dream has a graduation system that takes on new member depends on the availability of trainees and have them graduated when the members have grown out of the concept. NCT U is the route for any other trainees that does not fit with Dream. U lineup will always be a mixed of existing and newly debut members. That way every new member introduced will have chemistry with the existing members and will be better guided during the promotion. The genre and concept they promote will alter according to what best fits the line up (i.e. Without U vs 7th Sense). By the end of their promotion, not only will they have had more experience, exposure to the domestic market, a considerable number of followers, but also the opportunity to continue promoting as an artist even when their permanent unit is not ready. A prime example for this is Ten, and in 2 year time very likely Jeno, Jaemin and Renjun. From this point onward is my groundless desire: NCT U can also serve as a stopping spot for the NCT members in foreign based units. It’s a platform for these members, especially those that are Korean and want a long run career in their homeland, to always come back for promotion and interaction with fans. NCT U can also be the father of all units. Instead of NCT Ballad, NCT Performance, NCT Rock, NCT Trot, etc, the members can always come back to NCT U and sing whichever genre they feel best fit. Imagine an NCT U comeback with all the vocalists of NCT altogether. 

How important is NCT 127? Very. Though all permanent unit should be equally as important, 127 can’t help it since it operates in the main market. For now, they also have the most content released. When a group starts to enter a foreign market, they tend to release their song in the local language and promote with that first to test the market reaction. This is very logical, as blindly march towards a foreign land with a brand new content would be too much of a risk and waste of resources. NCT will also take this route of marketing. They will not just randomly build their house on a foreign territory. Before debuting a permanent foreign based unit, 127 will release a version of their already promoted song in that local language (may or may not include promotion there) in order to test the water, as well as being a way of informing the market that they’re coming. That or the new unit would just re-sing 127′s song in that language, which is EXO-K/EXO-M all over again but I don’t think it’s likely. 

TL;DR: 

NCT U and NCT Dream are the two gateways to debut future NCT members.

NCT U can also be a stopping spot/ father of all units. 

With this system, NCT can promote in the foreign land without ever losing the Kpop tag. 

NCT 127 will introduce the debut of a new permanent unit.

Andy’s Fanfic Log 21/02/2017

So how that I've got this blog up and running I thought it might be a fun idea to regularly share the fanfics that I've recently read/am currently reading (since I tend to go through a lot of fics). The inspiration to do this actually came from @victuurificrec​ who, as the name suggests, runs a fic recommendation blog for yuri on ice. She is honestly a Godsend, the blog is so helpful and she gives amazing recommendations! So go check her out! Fair warning, I've been reading a heap of her recs so a fair amount of the yoi stuff you'll be able find on her blog.

I'm planning to do this once or twice a week, give or take~ I think I'll be organising the fics via fandom, with crossovers going under the fandom it displays most (e.g. a yoi Hogwarts au would go under yoi for its large interaction with yoi characters). If you have any tips or ideas surrounding this, then please don't hesitate to tell me!

I'm constantly rereading it, I've lost count of the number of times, and I still enjoy it just as much the tenth time round as I did the first. I'd say that this is one of the best reincarnation fics in the HP/OP x-over verse.

Can the team figure out just what is going on here before it's too late? - A brilliant, brilliant fic. Well thought out and executed. I've only read it twice since finding it, but it's definitely a fic I'd be more than happy to read over and over.
