Over my academic career I have found myself excelling in English classes that helped shape my writing techniques. While the steps have been repetitive, each class allowed me to nourish my ability as a writer. Writing analysis and research papers helped me perfect a professional tone. I also learned how to best structure my response to get my point across. The classes that allowed me to write fictional pieces opened new doors for my writing potential. Instead of struggling to meet word counts, I would struggle to stay under them. Fictional stories let me express my thoughts and experiences in a way that didn’t feel like completing an assignment for school. I’ve always been interested in creating or adding to narrative stories, and receiving a grade for it just validated my desire to develop alternate realities on paper.
One of the goals I have for my writing is to learn how to cater my structure and language to my audience, in a way that keeps their attention throughout. In both non-fiction and fiction writing there can be sections where readers’ interest is peaked, and they’re encouraged to read further. Opposingly, readers can run into sections that drone on or fall flat and ruin their desire to finish reading the piece. If I can conquer this technique, it will allow me to write quality responses for my courses.
