Had no siblings; grew up “with a bit of everything”: whoever gave him shelter, food, or a scolding.

Started living as a thief(rogue) around the age of 20.

Was part of various small-time gangs, frequently switching groups, but never got involved in anything truly big.

Has a natural talent for stealth and observation, though he uses it selectively - mostly when he feels like it.

Exceptionally good at reading people’s emotions, especially when he needs to talk his way out of something.

Cynical, though prone to occasional bursts of gentleness.

Believes it’s better to live by street smarts than someone else’s rules.

Jokes often - to deflect attention from himself and the situation.

Likes to eat with his hands, even if served with silver and porcelain.

Carries an old, worn-out playing card - supposedly “lucky.”

Has a habit of watching people from the shadows even when unnecessary - just to “see how they act when they think they’re alone.”

Sleeps lightly at night, always with a knife under the pillow.

Background:

Born into an aristocratic family.

Rarely left the house during childhood, but had free access to the library.

Constantly devoured books: mechanics, construction, magic theory, alchemy.

Her knowledge remained purely theoretical for years.

After cutting ties with her family, she chose the engineer’s path to build and repair things on her own.

Serious, principled, a bit grumpy.

Can be sarcastic, especially if she feels underestimated.

Prefers to speak to the point, but becomes enthusiastic if someone genuinely takes interest in her knowledge.

Always carries a set of drafting tools and a broken copper gear as a good luck charm.

Struggles with “social games” - may offend unintentionally by bluntly stating facts.

Loves the smell of machine oil and burnt paper - her personal associations with “true freedom.”

First meeting.

The carriage rocked along the forest road, its wheels creaking pitifully as if sharing the passenger’s frustration. Ellegaard sat in the far corner, as far from the coachman and guard as possible, clutching a satchel full of sketches and a screwdriver.

«This is absurd,» —she muttered mostly to herself — «You can’t force someone into marriage - I have blueprints, projects, plans-»

The coachman smirked without turning around — «Yer papa’s got plans too, missy. And all of ‘em are ‘bout you.»

Her fingers clenched into a fist — «If only I could..» — but the thought never finished. Hoofbeats. The horses neighed, the carriage lurched to a halt. Angry shouting, clashing steel - an ambush.

«Out ya get, sweetheart,» — one of the bandits growled, yanking the door open.

«Don’t touch me!» — Ellegaard snapped, reflexively hurling a loose nut from her pocket at him.

But the strength was not on her side. The bandit grabbed her arm, and a scream tore from her throat.

He was running through the forest, ducking low through bushes, leaping over roots. The guards were behind, but not far.

«Alright, just a few more steps an’-»

A woman’s scream sliced through the stillness like a blade through flesh.

Magnus winced and cursed through his teeth — «Aw hell… not mah day. Just ain’t mah day.»

He turned off the path and burst onto the road - straight into a bandit. A fight broke out.

«Who the hell are you?!» — the bandit yelled.

«Dunno. Guess I’m a hero t’day.» — Magnus slammed his elbow into the man’s jaw and drew his dagger.

A few minutes later, the bodies lay in the dust. Ellegaard sat on the ground, breath ragged.

«You… who are you?» — she managed.

«Jus’ passin’ through. Don’t thank me.»

But there was no time for gratitude. The city guard emerged onto the road.

«Magnus! Stop right there, bastard!»

«Well, there y’all are..» — he muttered — «Great damn timin’, fellas..»

He barely managed a glance at Ellegaard — «Don’t forget this face, a’right? Though I hope ya ain’t the type who chases after criminals.»

«I-» — she whispered, but he was already being shackled and dragged away.

Hours later, Ellegaard stood in front of the magistrate’s building. The money from the carriage, nearly her entire dowry, was still with her. The decision came instantly. Without hesitation, she stepped inside.

«I need the man you arrested in the forest. He- uh- he saved my life.»

«Magnus?» — the guard scoffed — «Yeah, saved you, but now he’s in trouble himself. Owes the city up to his neck. We branded him with a slave mark. You can buy him out, but there’ll be a contract. He’ll belong to you. Temporarily.»

«I accept,» — she said firmly — «He’ll be mine. A slave or something else, it doesn’t matter. I need someone who’s not afraid to fight.»

The guard shrugged and helped with the paperwork.

Magnus was sitting on the stone floor when the door opened and that familiar figure appeared.

«Well lookie here,» — he grinned — «Knew ya fell for me. Too bad I ain’t no prince on a white horse. Sold the horse. Lost the crown.»

«At least you fight better than half the nobility,» — Ellegaard replied, rolling her eyes. — «Get up. Let’s go, ‘slave.’»

«Oooh, that’s got a sweet lil’ ring to it. Gonna make me brew tea next?»

«More like fix my armor.»

«Woman of mah dreams,» — he muttered, getting up.

They walked out of the building shoulder to shoulder.

He - no clue where this would lead.

She - for the first time, free.
