I was thinking about sharing a halloween photos in the spirit of Halloween, when I recognized that most of my work feels a little haunted. People talk about a photograph as a record of time (ie. the duration of the shutter release), but images describe expanses of time, such as a life-span, a generational period, an economic era, human history, geologic history, etc. I’m most interested in photographs that communicate different durations of time simultaneously, thus potentially evoking seemingly fragmented continuums of experience and existence. #McNairEvans #McNairEvans_CFAS #ConfessionsForASon (at Maxton, North Carolina) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bpm4ulRgSpR/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=qwttywniwy0d

Just leaving Charleston after a great weekend with the @halsey_institute crew, @gardenandgun supporters, and many incredible artists working within the south-eastern United States. People in the South surely know how to throw a party! It’s been a huge honor to be included in Southbound: Photographs of and about the New South, co-curated by Mark Sloan and Mark Long, and a huge pleasure to share this exhibition with friends, family, and classmates from all parts of life. Many thanks to all of you who came out for the Friday and Saturday openings. For anyone who couldn’t make, the exhibition will be on view through March 2, 2019 before hitting the road for other venues to come. #McNairEvans #mcnairevans_cfas #confessionsforason (at Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art) https://www.instagram.com/p/BpQFf4lAOJO/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=3iarxpgzfzyu

I became so enamored by these guns as totems that I started keeping them in car so that I could photograph them in any scenario that felt right. My friend @lionnerd had studio lights in his garage and we set up a portrait studio one afternoon. #McNairEvans #mcnairevans_cfas #confessionsforason (at Mebane, North Carolina) https://www.instagram.com/p/BpIMs-pgFUj/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=16nk7vbb44ncq

It’s a huge honor to be included in Southbound: Photographs of and about the New South, co-curated by Mark Sloan, director and chief curator of the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art and Mark Long, professor of political science, College of Charleston. Southbound is an exhibition of fifty-six photographers’ vision of the South over the first decade of the twenty-first century. Accordingly, it offers a composite image of the region. And, it’s an even larger honor for Garden & Gun Magazine to select this image, Wedding Silver, in their exhibition highlights. Thanks @maggiebrettkennedy and @gardenandgun! The show opens Friday 10/19, 6:30-8 Pm at the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art, 161 Calhoun St, Charleston, SC 29424. Hope to see some of you there! #mcnairevans #mcnairevans_cfas #confessionsforason (at Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art) https://www.instagram.com/p/BouCQ6PAyHG/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=101uxl25worb

I made this photograph in my dad's sophomore year (1949-1950) college dorm room. When researching to find the specific room where he had lived, I learned that it had been F. Scott Fitzgerald's room sometime between 1913 and 1917. Years later I was sharing this photograph with NYC photographer @chris.topher_dawson who told me a story about his classmate at the same school who called himself "Eddy Love" and spent time their senior year flirting with Christopher's younger, freshman sister. Next month (Oct.) this photograph and others from the series Confessions for a Son will take me Charleston, SC to participate in a Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art at The College of Charleston exhibition titled Southbound, Photographs of and about the New South, October 19, 2018 - March 2, 2019. It's unreal how the small act of photographing a seemingly nondescript dorm room can tie together so many previously unconnected threads. Experiences like this keep me curious about all the unexpected interconnections all around us. #mcnairevans_cfas #mcnairevans @traceymorgangallery #halseyinstitute #fscottfitzgerald #princetonuniversity (at Princeton University) https://www.instagram.com/p/BnHpgiMloIk/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1q25mxc5sslzp

This picture was made on the Lumber River, outside of Wagram, N.C. I was searching for the place where my dad and his siblings were taught to swim, supposedly a tearful ordeal of being thrown in over-and-over until you figured it out. I stumbled into this picture instead; an image perhaps equally symbolic but what way more true. “I love my crazy friends.” Is there anything more important in the grand scheme of things? You know who you are. Jack Kerouac on Robert Frank’s Americans, “Whether tis the milk of humankind-ness, or human kindness, Shakespeare meant, makes no difference when you look at these picture[s]. #portraitphotography #portraiture #lumberriver #kids #fishing #McNairEvans #mcnairevans_cfas #ConfessionsForASonProject #confessionsforason (at Wagram, North Carolina) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_ffxD0lOR3/?igshid=qb0b821h8d28

Beyond the edge of the world there’s a space where emptiness and substance neatly overlap, where past and future form a continuous loop. This picture was made in my Dad’s office after it became and abandoned property. I photographed there often over a period of years, mostly because so many items (furniture, paperwork, tools, clothing, and this feather duster) we’re simply left there like the ruins of Pompeii. The different colors in this picture were created by a window to open shade on the left, green blinds in the room off to the right, and an open door behind the camera and through which the sunset illuminated athe wall. #McNairEvans #McNairEvans_CFAS #ConfessionsForASon (at Maxton, North Carolina) https://www.instagram.com/p/BpkYTgrA6x1/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=13wqit9fsu876

Gun Collection, featured in the Southbound Exhibition Catalog available for purchase this Friday 10/20, is a still-life image of my father's gun collection at the time of his death. I oiled and wrapped each gun, a traditional way to keep them from rusting, without giving much thought to the process. Coming home years later as photographer, my eyes nearly popped out of my head when I saw them... each one a suggestive and evocative mummy his life and generations of North Carolinian agrarian roots. I'm heading to Charleston, SC now for the Southbound Exhibition opening tomorrow night at the Halsey Institute, 6:30 - 8 Pm. Hope to see some of you there! #McNairEvans #mcnairevans_cfas #ConfessionsForASon #halseyinstitute (at Laurinburg, North Carolina) https://www.instagram.com/p/BpFyQLTgFkN/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1630ersd66407

When my dad died, my mom was living alone. All of us—her three children—lived elsewhere. The unemployment rate in our home Scotland County, had grown to be the highest in North Carolina, and house burglaries were becoming more and more common. Across the street, my mom’s best friend, Anne Groves, woke up with a burglar standing on her back porch. She turned on the lights and the burglar fled. Mom installed a flood light in the backyard to illuminate the space and dissuade nightly intruders who felt like they could approach the back of the house under the cover of darkness. This picture communicates that isolation through the dichotomy of interior and exterior space. This is a picture made in my childhood bedroom of her house. I exposed the picture all night and woke just as the sun was rising to end the exposure. The orange light comes from the flood light in the backyard shining through the window while the blue light is pre-dawn glow filling in before sunrise. Thanks to curators Mark Sloan and Mark Long, this piece will be 1 of 4 images from Confessions for A Son (Owl & Tiger, 2014) exhibited in the Southbound Exhibition, opening 10/19 (6:30-8 Pm) at the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art at College Charleston. #McNairEvans #mcnairevans_cfas #confessionsforason #southboundexhibition #halseyinstitute (at Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art) https://www.instagram.com/p/BowqqVxAIF8/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=dfuaqyqthfy0

This photo was made in the no-longer-operaring Laurinburg & Southern Railroad offices, a business locally owned and operated 1904-1994. Thanks to the interest and dedication of @bordytom the records, a treasure trove of anthropological insight into Southern Reconstruction, will one day be available at the Unniversity of North Carolina's Center for Southern Studies.
