Heya! I was wondering about the color choices you made in the proud to the bone art for the aromantic flag; I just keep parsing it as the demiro flag instead in the designs that don't have a lot of black. Idk where I'm going with this it's just been standing out to me each time I see the promotions

We generally don’t use ‘black flowers,’ because they look weird as fuck and don’t carry across, especially at 1.25″ to 2″ high. We have one design which has a single very-close-to-black flower, the More Color More Pride crown, because that’s a non-negotiable part of the eight-color MCMP flag design, and just wouldn’t fit in properly. We’d have to double up a single flower, and that would mean we were deliberately leaving out the black stripe on a skull which has eight stripes and had 2 stripes added in order to add the black and brown. yiiiiiikes.

All of the other flags which include black (like non-binary, asexual, aromantic, etc.) skip having ‘black flowers’ (again, they really don’t work) and rely on the black portions of the pin. This has been a technique we’ve used with patches for years, since the patches have black backings and black stripes just ‘fall in’ to the background, even if we use a slightly lighter grey, it either reads as ‘a grey stripe’ or ‘part of the design is missing, it has disappeared into the ether, what did you do?’ 

This has been our go-to for several of our pins, because, like, with the Faith & Pride pins, again, black stripes just ... look like a hole in the design. 

We also generally do this with the white flowers as well, since all the skulls are white, unless we can do it in a way where the flowers are very clearly distinct from the skull itself. If you look at, for example, the non-binary skulls, you’ll see they have fewer white flowers than purple or yellow, because at the scale we’re working at, white flowers often look from a distance like ‘what is that weird growth on that skull?’ So unless we can set it up in a way that it’s clearly a distinct flower and doesn’t visually fade into the skull itself, we have a smaller number of white flowers, and rely on the white portion of the skull to ‘carry’ that color.

Really, it comes down to ‘it’s an artistic choice because the black flowers don’t actually look good in pins when you’re doing more than one of them, like for MCMP, so we’ll let the black metal carry that color for those flags.’ It’s come out really well for us in past designs, so we stuck with it!
