I Guess It Was My Destiny To Live So Long with Jamila Woods, Tasha, and McKinley Dixon at BAM Strong, Harvey Theater
Tumblr media
During the week of the 2024 US General Election, Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Curator at Large and MacArthur Genius Hanif Abdurraqib curated a series of events titled “I Guess It Was My Destiny To Live So Long,” which honored the legacy of poet June Jordan. Three musicians from Chicago were chosen to perform in Brooklyn on Wednesday, November 6th, the day after the election: Jamila Woods, Tasha, and McKinley Dixon.
I captured the wonderful show for BAM and some images from the special night appear in this gallery. I’ve been meaning to catch live sets by Tasha and McKinley Dixon for a while now, and didn’t experience a full set by Jamila Woods until last week (I previously saw her perform in 2018 at Damrosch Park Bandshell at Lincoln Center). I’m so grateful to Hanif for his essential curation and for Cynthia at BAM for asking me to document such an incredible show.

Pom Pom Squad Street Fighter Tournament at Barcade
Tumblr media
Full gallery can be found on my website
On Monday, October 21st, Pom Pom Squad held a record release party in Williamsburg, Brooklyn with a unique twist: participants could sign up to fight each other in the game “Street Fighter” with two winners heading home with prizes. Why the arcade game Street Fighter? A song from the forthcoming album, Mirror Starts Moving Without Me shares the same title and is naturally about fighting.
The event kicked off at 6PM at the now two decade old original location of Barcade on Union Avenue. Mirror Starts Moving Without Me played in the bar while people took turns beating each other up via the game until two winners were declared and received vinyl copies of the new album (which comes out via City Slang Records tomorrow), and all other attendees received Pom Pom Squad stickers and could enter to win tickets to the forthcoming sold out record release show at Mercury Lounge on the album release day.
I attended the party on Monday night and images from the fun event can be found this gallery on my website. If you’re in NYC and missed out on tickets to the PPS concert on October 25th, the band will also be playing Music Hall of Williamsburg on April 4, 2025.

For My Mama and Anyone Who Look Like Her (2021), Beloved! Paradise! Jazz!? (2023), McKinley Dixon
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Across all music, ever, so many lyricists strive towards the profound but simply cannot – whether due to intelligence, decadence, skill, aloofness or summut else – achieve it. And that is, one must stress, fine. Lyricism does not have to always be exceptional and one should be content that so many even strive to exceptionality. McKinley Dixon should certainly be counted amongst those that can achieve profundity, a rapper as emotionally stirring, well-read, abstract-but-intimate, elegant, eloquent as the best.
Pick(s): ‘Mama’s Home (feat. Alfred)’, ‘Sun, I Rise’
