Week 1- Is this where my Second Life begins?

I find myself suddenly immersed in a surreal and unexpected place. My last fling with the gaming world involved Pac-Man and Tetris, I am out of my comfort zone. 

Second Life was introduced to me by John O’Connor in November 2016 during an incredible discussion at The West Cork Art Center entitled, ‘Digital Art and Education in the Anthropocene’. My initial thoughts were that ‘Art’ had suddenly become even more bizarre. Grown men playing video games........which we as students would also participate in, I too would have my own Avatar! Fascinating, but what is going on?!

Then I thought about something a good friend had said said to me during a discussion earlier that week, ‘embrace it all and go with the madness, drink it all in and then see where it takes you.’ So, I have decided I am going to trust our course director Dr. Joseph Jacotot, and the director of the DIT and Dean of the College of Arts and Tourism, Mr. Acuppa Tae. I figure they both must know a thing or two!

One thing that stood out during John O’Connors talk was just how ‘plastic’ the avatars appeared. The graphics are not as good as more up to date computer games, however, when I say ‘plastic’ I refer to the fact that these avatars seemed like ‘plastic people’ with perfect ‘Ken and Barbie’ type bodies, the type of people I might normally try to avoid in real life. When it came to choosing my avatar I had this in mind and wanted to play around with different body types. Freddy mcFreddy started off as a male, but when I logged in the second time his body refused to download so he ended up changing to a female. 

I started off quite excited as I launched into Second Life for the first time. I might have been a little too confident. Somehow I managed to skip my time on ‘Learning Island’ and went straight to ‘The Blarney Stone Pub’....typical. That was a big mistake. I immediately felt very vulnerable. There were a lot of people there, some sitting, some dancing but it did not feel like ‘great crack’! One avatar told another that he was undressing her with his eyes...and there was other talk which I shall not repeat here! So, when someone said, ‘Hello Freddy’ I was terrified! I went bright red (in RL). I felt paralyzed...I was to a certain extent as I was still having difficulty controlling my avatar. I wanted to escape and eventually I managed that. Transporting myself to some quite strange and wonderful place...with NO other avatars, finally I felt I could breath again! There I learned to walk under water, sit, run and eventually fly. I cant believe I felt so self conscious in the bar and I was a little ashamed that I didn’t even reply to the poor fella that said hello. I thought this was supposed to make people feel that they could do or be anything? How disappointing that my real life fears seeped through to my virtual world. Even my avatar looks shy and self-conscious, head down, scratching her hand!

What are my expectations? 

”Virtual Environments : Is one life enough?”, If the title of this module is anything to go by I hope we can look forward to a lot of existential questioning in our new alternative universe. I would like to immerse myself completely in this new (for me) digital method of communication and be able to weigh up the pros and cons of the medium. I love the fact that SL is being used as an educational tool, reaching out to people who might find it more difficult to study at traditional educational institutions. Having the opportunity to meet as a class once a week, no matter where we are in the world will be extremely beneficial and challenging. I feel this non-conventional experience can only add to our development as artists. 

So, here’s to dealing with our fears, embracing the madness and seeing where it takes us.

Week 10- Reincarnation

Unfortunately this weeks class was yet another silent movie for me so I’m not sure how much I picked up on. I have been living on Sherkin Island for the last month and had put my voice problems down to the sometimes erratic internet connection. However, after attempting to log in from various locations on the island I realised that the internet was not the problem and that it must be down to something I had done with my SL settings. 

I finally decided to get rid of Freddy number one and reincarnate into Freddy McFreddy-The Specialist or Freddy McFreddy- The Finisher or Freddy McFreddy- The All Seeing Eye? I quite like the sound of the last one but I have not decided 100% what personality Freddy's new Matrix like avatar should have. Alas, all these changes did not solve the sound issue but after going through all my settings one by one and adjusting as recommended my voice finally returned. 

This weeks class was all about the teamwork and according to the “Team Building Tips” by Sirearm Madonna/James Neville, presented in class, we should all think about the role or roles we might play during our group project over the next few weeks. Here are a few interesting ones to choose from.

John asked us if we could remember times in the past when we have experienced good or bad teamwork situations.

Unfortunately, the worst experience I have had working in a team was probably the last time I was presented a powerpoint on Team Building! I was working in a call centre at the time and I feel that the main reason why team moral was at an all time low would have been the working conditions- increased pressures, unreachable targets, complacent top management and people just so sick of being overworked that there was little enthusiasm when it came to working on new projects. 

On the other hand I can remember being astounded by the level of commitment and professionalism shown by staff when I was working in a botanic garden in Belize. Every gardener had their section and their responsibilities. They had been continually trained on the job and went on to train other staff or volunteers. In times of crisis (which could be quite frequent as hurricanes and tropical storms could frequently do colossal damage. I think the team dynamic worked so well mainly because employees were treated with respect, they were encouraged to put forward their ideas and then discussions would go on about the feasibilities of particular projects. Of course their were issues at times but overall I think the atmosphere was very positive.

I also feel that the collaboration within our BAVA class has been pretty impressive from the start. There is a very nurturing dynamic to it. When someone needs help often several people will offer assistance. Because of our varied backgrounds we all have different strengths, be it in digital work, painting techniques or the more academic side such as creative writing. It has been lovely to witness this and I really hope it continues through the years.
