Erickson Aero Tanker earlier this year took delivery of an ex-Delta MD-88, N990DL, and it's presently being used as a spares source for the MD-87 fleet at Erickson's base at Madras Municipal Airport in Oregon. In the distance is the 10,495 foot volcanic peak, Mount Jefferson ("Seekseekqua" to the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs whose reservation is nearby). Mount Jefferson is the second highest peak in Oregon after Mount Hood. ⁣ ⁣ When Delta placed its order as the launch customer for the MD-88 in January 1986 (30 firm orders with 50 options), McDonnell Douglas was initiating an aggressive drive to get the MD-91/92 variants to launch which would have been powered by either the GE36 UDF (unducted fan) or the Allison 578DX UHB (ultra high bypass) engine. 1988 was the planned launch date for the MD-9X propfan program and while narrowbody resources were being heavily committed to the MD-9X propfan, the company was giving very serious consideration to market opportunities re-engining the MD-80s with propfans. ⁣ ⁣ The proposed MD-80 re-engining propfan program would have been launched after the the MD-9X program was underway. As the two programs would have shared common engineering resources, it was not unrealistic in those days to expect that was the direction the McDonnell Douglas was headed. ⁣ ⁣ One of the selling points for the MD-88 for Delta Airlines was the possibility of such a re-engining program. For McDonnell Douglas, getting the Delta order breathed life into the MD-80 program that was losing ground to the Boeing 737 and the Airbus A320. ⁣ ⁣ This aircraft, N990DL, was delivered to Delta in December 1991 and was withdrawn from use in April 2020. The McDonnell Douglas MD-80 retains much of the hydraulic system architecture of the legacy DC-9 variants but with new and larger components as needed reflecting the fact that the MD-80 is nearly twice as heavy as the first DC-9 variants. ⁣ ⁣ The MD-80 has two separate and independent hydraulic systems- fluid from one system doesn’t mix with the other. They are designated “Left” and “Right”- the Left system is driven by a engine-driven variable displacement pump on the left engine and the Right system is driven by the same type of pump on the right engine. In addition, the right engine also drives an electric auxiliary pump based on that used on the DC-10. ⁣ ⁣ The engine hydraulic pumps have three settings- OFF, HIGH, and LOW. The HIGH pressurizes the hydraulic system to 3000 psi with all pumps including auxiliary pumps on. This is the setting used during takeoff and landing. The LOW setting is used during cruise with only the two engine pumps running at 1500 psi. Running at a lower pressure in cruise flight reduces wear and tear on the hydraulic components.⁣ ⁣ While the control surfaces like the elevators are cable driven for simplicity and reliability, stall recovery involves a hydraulic power boost to the tailplane control surfaces from the Left system. Mad Dog BLAST OFF!⠀ ⠀ The Pratt & Whitney JT8D-200 series engines of the MD-80 family were developed specifically for the aircraft as a significant upgrade to the JT8D engine product line that had been in production since 1964 for the 727, DC-9, and 737-100/200 families. ⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ Compared to the IAE V2500 engine of the MD-90 and the Rolls Royce BR715 of the MD-95/717, the Pratt & Whitney JT8D-200 of the MD-80 is one loud beast from a different era. ⠀ ⠀ Compared to the first generation of JT8D engines used on the 727, DC-9 and 737-100/200 variant families, the engine was upgraded significantly for the JT8D-200 series used on the MD-80, the most obvious change being an increase in the fan diameter from 1.01m to 1.27m which increased its bypass ratio and made it relatively quieter and more fuel efficient than the earlier versions but not as quiet as the current generation of commercial turbofan engines. ⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ There are three basic versions to the JT8D-200 family- the -209 powered the earliest MD-80s off the production line. The -209 was a bit of a pig and was quickly supplanted by the more powerful -217 and even more powerful -219. The -209 could be converted into a -217 and most were; this required a new air-cooled HP turbine and a modified LP turbine that has aerodynamic tweaks. There is a -217 subvariant, the -217C, that’s just a derated -219 but otherwise identical to the -219.⁣⠀ ⠀ I took this photo of N471AA back in 2015. 1985 McDonnell Douglas advertisement that ran in Aviation Week & Space Technology for the MD-83, the long range variant of the MD-80 family. ⁣ ⁣ There are four main variants of the MD-80 that are all externally indistinguishable- the MD-81 was the initial production model. ⁣ ⁣ The MD-82 is basically a heavy gross weight MD-81 with more powerful engines- same fuel, more powerful engines, higher payload. Sort of an MD-81IGW. ⁣ ⁣ The MD-83 is an MD-81/82 with engines of even more thrust but with additional fuel tanks- two of them, ahead and behind the wing center section as well as structural beef ups. So you can sort of think of the MD-83 as an MD-82ER. ⁣ ⁣ The MD-88 is an MD-83 with a glass cockpit. Theoretically any variant could be modified to the other, many MD-81 operators upgraded their aircraft to MD-82s, some MD-82 operators like American upgraded theirs to MD-83s. 1980 McDonnell Douglas ad for what would later be marketed as the MD-80 but at the time was still called the DC-9 Super 80. This great ad features former NASA astronaut Pete Conrad. Conrad flew on Gemini 5 and Gemini 11, went the Moon on Apollo 12, and was the commander of Skylab 2. After he retired from NASA in 1973, he went to work in the cable TV industry but in 1976 accepted a job as a VP and consultant with McDonnell Douglas. In 1978, he became the VP for marketing and was in charge of both commercial and military sales for McDonnell Douglas. A After the tragic crash of American 191 in Chicago in 1979, Conrad led the efforts to save the DC-10’s reputation. Following his work in the wake of AA191, he became the head of marketing for McDonnell Douglas and would go on to hold a series of senior positions at the company into the early 1990s. Conrad was known as one of the more colorful astronauts at NASA. In the run up to Apollo 12, NASA was concerned about him as he had a habit of cussing whenever his mind wandered and that couldn’t happen on a televised landing. So they had Conrad work with a psychiatrist so that he would hum to himself instead of cussing. Everyone, from us avgeeks to passengers to American’s employees, knew this was a special day in the history of the airline if not in the history of the MD-80 program. Here’s a ramper getting a shot of the ship number of N984TW, “4YU” before its departure. ⁣ ⁣ I’ve always been fascinated with ship numbers, I suppose it’s a bit of a hold over in nautical traditions that crossed over into aviation, particularly in the days of the flying boats in the 1930s- just look at Pan American, they had a very nautical theme in their history, right down to their radio call sign “Clipper”. For airlines, ship numbers are an easier way to keep track of aircraft internally than using the tail number. Some airlines have systems where certain ship number groups can delineate certain aircraft subtypes or cabin configurations. For example, United Airlines years ago on its A320s, ship numbers in the 47xx block were overwater equipped, versus A320s in the 46xx block were not. Not sure if they still follow that system now, though. ⁣ ⁣ MD-80s at American Airlines with alphanumeric ship numbers 4xx, like this one being “4YU”, are ex-TWA. N982TW, one of the last American MD-80s, gets ready to head out for retirement in the desert at Roswell, New Mexico, after pushback from Terminal C at DFW on the day of the MD-80’s last passenger services for American Airlines on 4 September 2019. Next to where N982TW was parked was N984TW that flew the actual last American MD-80 passenger services DFW-ORD that day. ⁣ ⁣ N982TW was part of the last delivery group to TWA in December 1999- those three aircraft were the MD-80s N982TW (the MD-80 I photographed here), N983TW, and the very last MD-80 built, N984TW. ⁣ ⁣ In its history, TWA operated a total of 104 MD-80s, all of them -82s and -83s, delivered between April 1983 to the very last MD-80 built, delivered to TWA in December 1999. TWA”s order for the MD-80 started with a lease of 15 aircraft on the heels of the landmark American Airlines order that literally saved the MD-80 production line. ⁣ ⁣ The TWA Board approved the deal in November 1982 and it and the American Airlines deal were innovative as “pay-as-you-go” utilization arrangements that are now commonplace in the airline industry. For TWA, the MD-80s were slated to replace the Boeing 707 and 727 on select domestic routes. On the McDonnell Douglas MD-80 (as well as the legacy DC-9), the elevators are actually free floating and only receive a hydraulic boost with the control column pushed nose down more than 10 degrees. All all other times, the elevator free floats and is actuated by servo tabs connected by cables to the control column. ⁣ ⁣ To move the elevator nose down, the servo tab deflects up which moves the elevator down and to move the elevator nose up, the servo tab deflects down which moves the elevator up. When the MD-80/DC-9 is parked, the elevators tend to deflect upward because they are slightly weighted to be nose down. ⁣ ⁣ If the elevators were weighted more nose up, there would be more flutter coming from the tail surfaces during cruise flight. Since the elevators are free-floating, they are also not mechanically linked so in some wind conditions, a parked MD-80/DC-9 may have one elevator deflected upward more than the other side or even one up and one down. ⁣ ⁣ The aircraft in the foreground is N984TW, the last MD-80 built as “The Spirit of Long Beach” when it was delivered to TWA in 1999. That’s the aircraft that flew the last American Airlines passenger MD-80 services today as AA80 DFW-ORD. On the Douglas DC-9, the thrust reverser buckets when deployed were vertical- top bucket in line with the bottom bucket. This became problematic with some airlines as the lower bucket’s thrust efflux would kick up all sorts of FOD that could get sucked into the engine. ⁣ ⁣ Air Canada had a fleet of DC-9-10s and DC-9-30s and came up with a fix by angling the lower bucket out 17 degrees which toed in the upper bucket when reverse thrust was selected. Anything kicked up by the lower bucket was blown out to the side away from the engine intake. Many other airlines picked up Air Canada’s modification and McDonnell Douglas introduced the 17 degree rotation of the reverser buckets as production standard beginning with the Series 50. Any Series 30 aircraft built after the start if Series 50 production also had this fix as factory standard. ⁣ ⁣ So for example, all DC-9-34s have it fresh from the factory, but not all DC-9-33s did. ⁣ ⁣ When the MD-80 came along, that angled out reverser buckets was kept despite the newer engines as seen on N984TW- note the fairings for the thrust reverser actuator arms aren’t exactly horizontal with each other. Interestingly, despite all new engines and nacelles, the Boeing 717 (which I will insist on still referring to an MD-95 at times. Big ups to the @DFWAirport social media team for hosting us avgeeks on the day of the McDonnell Douglas MD-80 retirement from passenger services at American Airlines today! ⁣ ⁣ This was one of the “boneyard” flights departing for Roswell, New Mexico, where the MD-80 fleet is headed now that the Mad Dog has been retired from passenger services at American. This particular MD-80 was obviously lightly loaded and made a spirited departure off 18L with the crowds surrounding the airport beacon at the spotters’ park, Founders Plaza, in the distance. ⁣ ⁣ This particular MD-83 is N979TW, delivered originally to Trans World Airlines on 10 November 1999 and crossed over to American after the 2001 acquisition of TWA. Trans World operated a total of 104 MD-82/83s in its history prior to the merger. This photo is from 2015, N9627R “Flagship Tulsa II” starts its takeoff roll on 18L at DFW while N7541A awaits its turn to depart. ⁣ ⁣ The MD-80 originally had a pointed tail cone but it was found later on that a screwdriver tail cone had lower drag and could offer fuel savings as a result. Following the 2001 acquisition of TWA, American had the largest MD-80 fleet in the world and getting new tail cones would add up to significant fuel savings. ⁣ ⁣ With Boeing then the new owner of McDonnell Douglas, the screwdriver tail cones sourced from Boeing would cost $278,000 each. American balked at the asking price and the aftermarket options were limited. American decided to make the tail cones in-house at the MD-80 heavy maintenance facility at Tulsa and it only cost the airline $30,000 per tail cone. ⁣ ⁣ At the prices of Jet-A at the time of merger with TWA, each new screwdriver tail cone could save $28,000 in fuel costs per MD-80 per year. Great 1980 McDonnell Douglas ad that ran in Aviation Week for what would later be marketed as the MD-80 but at the time was still called the DC-9 Super 80. ⁣ ⁣ Such is the march of aviation progress that the MD-80 is considered a loud gas guzzler, but at its introduction in the early 1980s, it was the next step in efficiency that led to today’s modern jetliners. When compared to the 727 on an identical route, the MD-80 cost 35-40%% less to operate and did it with 7-10 less passengers, a remarkable testament to the design efficiency of what’s essentially a derivative design. It wasn’t just a better fuel burn, it was also a robust and reliable aircraft that was less maintenance intensive than the 727.⁣ ⁣ For a lot of airlines that ordered the MD-80, it was an ideal 727 replacement. And when the MD-80 was introduced, it was also significantly quieter than the Boeing 727. ⁣ ⁣ Other airlines, though, like American and Eastern, ordered the 757 as their 727 replacement as the 757 had a 45% lower fuel burn than the 727 and 50% more range. N984TW gets some final preparations before its departure as the last American Airlines MD-80 passenger revenue flight as American Flight 80 to Chicago O’Hare. It’s supremely apropos that a former TWA jet flies the ceremonial final MD-80 revenue services for American Airlines.⁣ ⁣ This particular MD-80 is very special as it is the very last MD-80 built at McDonnell Douglas’s Long Beach plant. It was an enormously successful aircraft for the company with 1191 MD-80s being built- when this last aircraft was delivered to TWA in 1999, it was in a special ceremony and christened “The Spirit of Long Beach” by then Mayor of Long Beach, Beverly O’Neill, in honor of the men and women who built the MD-80s from 1979 to 1999.⁣ ⁣ TWA’s head, Captain William Compton said at the delivery ceremony "This day is especially historic because TWA has now come full circle. Ironically, not only is TWA taking delivery of the last MD-80 twin-engine jet to be made by the former McDonnell Douglas work force, but in 1933, TWA took delivery of the first twin-engine transport airplane, the DC-1, made by a predecessor of McDonnell Douglas, the Douglas Aircraft Company. TWA's DC-1 was the only one of its kind ever made.”⁣ ⁣ The one and only DC-1 for TWA led to the improved DC-2 and that led to the iconic Douglas DC-3. That launched Douglas Aircraft to become one of the world’s premier commercial airframe builders as it moved into the jet age with the DC-8 and the MD-80’s predecessor, the DC-9.
