Joined my MCCY colleagues at their annual Chinese New Year Celebration on Tuesday. We were treated to an energetic lion dance performance, followed by a Chinese dance performance by the graceful students from School of the Arts. Repost @mccysg Happy Chinese New Year! 新年快乐 🥳 Couplets, or 春联(Chun Lian) in Mandarin, is a common custom when celebrating the Chinese New Year. Comprised of a pair of poetry lines, it expresses wishes and hopes for the new year. Despite being called a couplet, there is actually a third horizontal scroll pasted above the door, along with the two scrolls on both sides of the door. 花开富贵 (Hua Kai Fu Gui) is a common Chinese saying which means a blooming plant brings prosperity and happiness. As such, many people decorate their homes with plants to usher in the new year. The pussy willow is one of the most iconic Chinese New Year plants and it symbolises growth and the coming of spring. Its Chinese name, 银柳 (Yin Liu), also sounds like "money flowing in". Mandarin oranges 🍊 are considered a symbol of good fortune. When spoken in Cantonese, it sounds similar to the word “wealth” while the colour is said to symbolise gold, making it a very auspicious fruit. Exchanging mandarin oranges is a form of respect and a symbolic way of wishing someone wealth and prosperity, so don’t forget your oranges if you are visiting! My mental health journey has gotten me quite far. 6years and counting of therapy sessions is an essential that I have never once regretted. I thank myself for putting in the hard work to be better. Battling my stubborn old self and try practicing mindfulness. Surrounding myself with wonderful people is one of the crucial key to get better. Honestly, without these people in my life, I don’t think I could have gotten out of my hole. Now I’m able to share my story on @channelnewsasia @viceasia, @thewhitebooksg, @mccysg, @projectbarebears and many more. I hope to educate and ease the stigmas. And hopefully, ONE DAY, seeing a doctor for mental health related issues will be treated like a common flu. I seriously loved the #satay from #OPAHsatay ! Sure they weren't cooked over charcoal cos of safety regulations but man....were they juicy, tender, well marinated and damm #shiok !
