January: Architecture
"The difference between art and architecture is that architecture is art with rules."
- Josh Blumer
Over the weekend TIP went to AB Design Studio were Josh Blumer, co-owner and head architect of AB Design Studio gave us a tour of their offices. He showed us architectural drawings of buildings and shared anecdotes about the amount of time and work it takes to create a building. He gave us a tour of an architectural site currently under construction (see photos). We were very inspired (to say the least).

November: Being a Working Artist
So what does it mean to be a working artist today? And to begin with, shouldn’t we have an understanding of what contemporary art is? During our monthly meeting through readings and a group discussion, the definition of contemporary art became a little more understandable. Our best definition – Though practically impossible to define, contemporary art is the art of our time; it acts as a voice with which to mirror contemporary culture and society; and uses diverse mediums.
What better way to learn about being a contemporary working artist than talk to the source!
This week we had two guest speakers, Santa Barbara-based artists Christopher Silva and Nathan Hayden.
Christopher Silva works in an array of mediums, from photography to sculpture. He talked about the so-called “art world,” explaining that “people talk a lot about the art world like there are big gates surrounding it with all these secrets inside. Well there’s not, and the only secret is that we all are in the art world. Don’t think that you are not. Don’t let people be the gate guards. The art world is open.”
One thing you might not know about Silva: He runs an alternative art space in Goleta, CA, called The Thrift Store.

Our second speaker was the artist Nathan Hayden. “Take advantage of spaces,” he told us. Having grown up somewhat isolated in rural West Virginia, he had a lot of time to observe his surroundings. He describes himself as a drawer, working sometimes on large installations and wall drawings. He passed around a couple of his small drawings on paper. His work is very detailed, and seeing his work in person gave us a chance to see the attention he gives it.
Two things you might not know about Hayden: He often makes his own paints out of natural substances, and he dances for one hour everyday to illicit visions that lead to inspiration for his drawings.

It was inspiring to hear, from working artists themselves, how their passion for art lead them from one thing to the next, even when times were difficult. Art-making is so often a reflection of one’s own experiences and culture.
Next stop, Cannon Art Studios in Goleta, California!

This past Saturday (October 5, 2013) the Teen Insiders Project took a trip down to Los Angeles.
We woke up early and drove to LACMA to see the James Turrell exhibition. Some words that came to mind in regard to our experience of the show - exceptional, mind-blowing, and beyond words.
James Turrell is known for using light. He creates rooms that have different colors of light. When I walked into some of his light rooms, I felt like I was part of his art. While in the rooms, I saw what light really is, how powerful it is, and its beauty. My favorite room was his pink room, a room saturated by a warm pink glow. I didn’t realize until going into the different rooms, how your emotions can be affected by colors. In the black room I felt tired, whereas in the pink room I was energized.
After viewing the exhibition we had a discussion about our different experiences and reflections. Each Insider had interesting things to say, describing how for Turrell, light is a frame in which to convey particular concepts, or that entering into the space was disorienting, overwhelming, or meditative. I connected Turrell’s light rooms to Plato’s Allegory of The Cave. Plato, the Greek philosopher, wrote about how the light of the fire in the dark cave represents hope – similar to how I felt in the light rooms.
We had a nice lunch at the La Brea Tar Pits and headed off to Culver City in search for some awesome galleries. We visited LAXART where one of their curators gave a talk about their mission and the artists in their current exhibitions. We also visited the Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects Gallery where Kevin Scholl, Director of Sales, lead us through the space and even brought us into the “back” where they store their art! It was incredible to get a special behind-the-scenes look at a commercial gallery!
Before we went home we had yummy salads and pleasant discussions. It was a full day of awesome art!
