16, 9, and 5 for the music asks
ooh okay!!
16- okay the first song that comes to mind is Starman by David Bowie which i have super vivid memories of singing in the car on the way home from prom with the first guy i ever went out with haha. every time i hear that song i feel like im 16 in the front seat of his moms minivan <3
9- okay i listen to a lot of music in different languages bc sometimes you just need the vibe lmao. i am SO into Fatoumata Diawara, my favorite by her are probably Makoun Oumou and Bissa, but also shoutout to Clandestin. lmao i cant choose she is SO GOOD. I also love Mbongwana Star, Coco Blues is such a chill song to listen to while studying. and of course the absolute queen Miriam Makeba lmao, Amampondo is one of the coolest pieces of music i have ever listened to <3
5- ooh a song i think people haven't heard before... okay lmao well probably a lot of my music tbh. i feel like this ask game is just turning into an advertisement for Nana Grizol but they are SO GOOD and nobody has ever heard of themmmm everyone go listen to T.V. Song RIGHT NOW. in other artists... maybe Not a Catastrophe by Tom Rosenthal. i feel like people listen to his sleep albums from tiktok but his other music is so joyful and happy you should all listen to it<3

For over eight years, Bondfire Radio was my home away from home, a place where I built community with a number of immensely talented people. It was the place where I learned how to celebrate the successes of others and how to truly be a team player while championing music from unsigned, independent and major label artists as both a broadcaster and a music director. Being a part of #teamBondfire was everything to me and I was gutted when it was announced that the station's end was unavoidable. Our last broadcast day was on Saturday, December 30, 2023, and I truly believe that we went out on top. That entire day was absolutely magical and I'm sure that a number of us involved are still trying to process what it all meant to us as individuals and as a collective.
With my Bondfire broadcast days behind me, I wanted to revisit an earlier episode from 2016. In an attempt to bring the BSOTS on Bondfire broadcast experience to the podcast feed, I thought it would be wise to share some of the indie cuts that I was playing on the station during my first year. It's a fun mix of tunes with some special guests along the way that offers an accurate overview of what my early broadcasts were like. This one's for my Bondfire family and for anyone that never got the chance to hear my broadcasts live while the station was still around. Best believe that I am #teamBondfire for life!

Album Of The Week: Polobi & the Gwo Ka Masters – Abri Cyclonique
The artwork grabbed my attention, and the music did the rest. Drawing inspiration from the heart of Gaudeloupe’s tropical forest, the mystical Polobi and his musical cohorts collaborate with Doctor L (Les Amazones d’Afrique, Mbongwana Star), where deeply rooted Creole chants and rhythms take a radical new direction. Listening to this album, I’m thrown into a trance-like state, but I’m also inspired to indulge in the many styles present, whether dub, jazz, psychedelic, psych-funk or Caribbean grooves. Abri Cyclonique will likely make its way to many Best Albums of 2023 lists.

Silicon Africa: A Playlist of Africa’s Electronic Music Innovators
This month, OkayAfrica will focus on technology’s impact on young Africans.
As the continent gains access to fast internet at accelerating rates, we’ll be looking at how Africans are using it to transform their lives—from tech entrepreneurs and inventors to the people and places making the continent a place for innovation and expression.
This Silicon Africa playlist showcases how technological innovation has influenced artists across the continent and their song craft. It features modern, electronic and, at times, experimental tracks from the likes of Spoek Mathambo, Baloji, Okzharp & Manthe Ribane, Just A Band, Petite Noir and more.

Brooklyn-based, Nigerian multi-instrumentalist Eli Fola created a sound he calls ‘Tech Afrique’out of his love for house and techno music. Dive into Fola’s colorful world with “Wonders.”

As this decade comes to an end, I wanted to look back on the music I listened to through it and make a little list. It feels fitting, since it was around the beginning of this decade (Late 2010/ early 2011 I think) that I really opened up and started being actively interested in all kinds of music. I cannot help but feel nostalgic for the time when I started out and had all of this music completely new to me and ready to discover, even though let’s be honest, /mu/ was a kinda terrible place and nobody should’ve been there (fortunately, I stopped going there and started using rym as a source for music good few years ago). It also feels a bit melancholic, as nowadays I don’t really have the same enthusiasm and energy towards this subject.
Anyway, that being said, here are my fifteen seventeen eighteen albums of this decade - I don’t know if I would necessarily consider them the best (although they are all certainly amazing) albums of 2010s, these are simply albums I found especially interesting or influential on my taste in some way. This list is arranged purely alphabetically, as ranking these didn’t really make sense to me
A Badly Broken Code - Dessa
An Empty Bliss Beyond this World - The Caretaker
Archandroid - Janelle Monae
Bubblethug - Expressway Yo-yo Dieting
Carrie and Lowell - Sufjan Stevens
The Cherry Thing - Neneh Cherry & The Thing
From Kinshasa - Mbongwana Star
Get to Heaven - Everything Everything
Giles Corey - Giles Corey
In Somniphobia - Sigh
kin - iamamiwhoami
Murmuüre - Murmuüre
Primitive and Deadly - Earth
Ravedeath, 1972 - Tim Hecker
Refractory Obdurate - Wovenhand
Splendor and Misery - clipping.
Totem Two - Master Musicians of Bukakke
Twin Fantasy - Car Seat Headrest

27 days...
Today’s music takes us to Kinshasa, the capital city of the Congo. Despite years of war torn violence, poverty, corruption and chaos, its’ people perpetuate little self-pity and instead turn to the arts, music and creativity.
Yakala ‘Coco’ Ngambali and Nsituvuidi ‘Theo’ Nzonza lived the streets of Kinshasa for 50 years, amongst the handicapped, the rejected and the 20,000 something street kids. 15 years ago they formed a band with other street hustlers, capturing the magic and spirit they all felt within.
In 2013, Theo and Coco started a new project; Mbongwana Star – a seven-piece band showcasing traditional rhythms of the Congo with an interesting modern twist.
When searching for a sound to truly represent the creative soul of Kinshasa, they were shown the album Black Voices by Nigerian drummer, Tony Allen. Theo’s reaction was “That’s it! That’s the direction we should go in. Because mbongwana means ‘change’. Because that’s the future.”
Taken from their debut album ‘From Kinshasa’ here is ‘Nganshe’

The album that inspired Mbongwana Star... Black Voices.

Here is the trailer for ‘Jupiters’ Dance’, a documentary about Kinshasa. One half of the team behind the film was Renaud Barret – the man that introduced Mbongwana Star to Black Voices and also shot and co-directed their first music video – ‘Ngashe’.
