Closed starter for: @lawunabiding Location: Fair rodeo grounds
There were people that came into Buddie's Dispensary with the same energy as a child sticking their hand in a cookie jar. Maeve Byrne was one of those people. Enough so that he was fairly certain that greeting her as if he knew her as a customer would cause her to crawl right out of her skin. That was the impression he got, anyways. Hell, he could always be wrong. It never surprised him when he was. Still, he'd try to be respectful. Treat her as if he knew her from the Trading Post, as was the case with most of the area. You didn't have to shop at Buddie's to know Billie.
Maeve didn't look like the type of girl that'd get on a horse and let it throw her around -- or spin itself around barrels -- but Billie knew that looks could be deceiving. There'd been a girl, back when they were growing up, that had looked like she'd never set foot on the ground in her life much less trudged her way through manure. Turned out that she'd almost never set foot to ground because she'd spent most of her life sitting on the back of a horse. She would have out ridden Billie at any relay, if she'd decided to try her hand at it. It was entirely possible that Maeve was like that girl, and Billie wouldn't have the slightest idea. Only one way to find out.
He approached the woman with his hands in his pockets, wearing a smile, "Y'know... they have some broncs over that way..."
He pursed his lips and raised his jaw slightly, indicating the direction of the fair's rodeo, "If you were looking to get into ambulance chasing. You seen what they have over there, yet? Swear there's a horse comes up this high, right to my belly button. Right here. Bet he bucks like he's got a spring in his belly. You ride at all?"

Shane wasn’t used to being the center of attention. In fact, his entire life had been an exercise in blending in, in drawing as little attention to himself as he possibly could. So, now, attending an event that was specifically geared towards celebrating him and his fiance... Shane wasn’t sure how to handle that. “Oh, hi,” he greeted, turning to the person besides him. “I wasn’t expecting to see you here tonight.”

Where: Pumpkin Pie stand at the Fall Festival Who: @moorbrookestarters
Allowing James to be responsible for literally ANYTHING was always a terrible idea. Especially when it involved food. He’d been excited when his boyfriend gave him permission to be in charge of the whipped cream on their little pumpkin pie stand but within an hour, James was fairly sure that more of the cream had gone into their belly than on any of the pies. Whenever the stall was quiet, James found themselves squirting cream onto their finger and then eating it. Even at the ripe old age of twenty-five, James was still like a child with sticky fingers.
As he stood there with his back turned away, James decided just to go all out and squirt it straight into their mouth before feeling a presence behind them. With a guilty look on their face, James turned and swallowed before giving a mischievous grin. “You didn’t see that, right?”

location: moorbrooke’s fall festival when: anytime status: CLOSED || @moorbrookestarters
what the fuck was pumpkin beer anyway? aksel wondered as he walked away from a stall and examined the drink he’d just bought. he couldn’t have passed it up, it was too intriguing for that. but should it exist? tough to say. by the time he found an empty bench to crack open his beer, it had gotten fizzy and spilled over his hands. aksel quickly took a sip but the damage was done and the liquid was all over his clothes. ‘great.’ he remarked before waving over someone walking by, ‘hey! be honest, how badly do i smell? should i go home and change? also pumpkin beer? tastes like shit. don’t try it.’

Jill wasn’t sure how they had gotten up on stage. Whether they had been pushed up there by their friends or they bulldozed their way up after hearing the song being played, it didn't matter. With some off beat dancing and a tone deaf voice, Jill was putting the show of their life. Was it good? No not at all, but they were living it up. Once the song finished, Jill ended it with a big bow, hair flying all over the place as they did. “Okay, okay.” they had their hand on their chest as they hoped off stage, cheeks flushed from all the effort they put up there. “I think I’m done. Do you... do you have some water?.”

"Mm. Don't have to ranch to ride. I'm not from ranching stock, myself, if you'd believe it," Billie shook his head and winked -- then answered her question with a question of his own. "Can you imagine me on a horse?"
Friendly deflection was the easiest way to maintain a certain level of amicability with just about anyone. Ask people questions about themselves, and they wouldn't even remember that you hadn't answered a single question yourself.
Billie hooked his thumbs in his belt, "Probably get on backwards."
He'd all but grown up on horseback, had rode in his fair share of Indian relay races and the rodeo back home but... it wasn't something he'd ever really shared with the locals here. Now that so much time had passed, it just seemed funnier to him than anything that he let there be a perception that he just didn't ride.
maeve was raised in constant stress - the tension between the walkers and byrnes hung heavy on her shoulders, both as the friend of a walker and as her family's chosen scholar to aid in their business one day; maintaining perfect grades from high school to law school gifted her an issue with migraines; and her position at a major nonprofit in the nation's capital came with its own difficulties. all of it culminated to now - she wasn't sure what was going to happen, yet the paperwork on her desk made her nervous of what's to come. it was difficult to enjoy the festival with a pounding head.
she spotted billie at a distance and bit the inside of her cheek. this facade she put on as the pristine, composed lawyer was something she needed to maintain. but his products had more of an impact on her than any pain relievers ever had. she was thankful for his discretion as he approached her with a smile.
" oh yeah? i'll have to check it out, " she answered with a smile. " ranching was never much my family's thing, but i learned to ride with some friends. i kind of miss it," she recalled fondly. it had been so long since she was in a saddle. " what about you? "

Nadine couldn’t say that she was intimate friends with either of grooms being celebrated at tonight’s event, but when she’d heard that the men were in need of a location to host their engagement party, she’d offered use of Brinie for a very small nominal fee. After all, what else was a committed community member such as herself supposed to do in the face of need? Plus, she’d never turn down the publicity. Nadine had made her rounds, ensuring that everything was working in the way they should. So, now, she was intent on enjoying herself as much as possible. “So,” she said, as she slid into a chair, “are you having a good time so far?”

Where: Fall Festival Who: @moorbrookestarters
Though Andrej’s favourite time of year was DEFINITELY the summer -- which was the reason he moved to a damn beach town to begin with -- he couldn’t pretend that he didn’t sometimes appreciate the fall weather. Mainly in October when it wasn’t yet too unbearably cold and he could just shove on a cozy sweater most likely stolen from Grayson and put a steaming hot drink in his hands and could celebrate vaguely fun things like Halloween and Moorbrooke’s Fall Festival. He hadn’t been on the rides yet but he was curious about them and stood watching the Ferris Wheel for a while as he ate a caramel apple.
“You think that Ferris Wheel is safe? Looks a bit precarious from here,” he said with a wicked grin on his face. “Wanna try it out and see?”

Where: Engagement Party Who: Anyone! @moorbrookestarters
Andrej wasn’t really much of a drinker these days. Generally, he tried to stay away from things that were bad for him and that usually included alcohol, though on a night like tonight he knew he was desperately going to need it in order to get through this party. Especially since being here was gradually putting him in a bad mood. Which was how Andrej ended up sat outside with his leather jacket clumsily draped around his shoulders, a cigarette in one hand and a bottle of half drunk whiskey in the other, realising that his alcohol tolerance was most certainly not as high as it used to be all those years ago.
He didn’t even know how long he’d been out here for but if the growing pile of cigarette butts next to him that he’d chain smoked indicated anything, it was that it had probably been awhile. He could hear somebody coming outside and a groan left his lips because he just wanted to be alone. “Fuck off and find somewhere else to sit, can’t you see I’m busy?” He rolled his eyes, not caring if he was being rude. “Unless you have food you’re willing to share, then I suppose you can stay for a bit. I’m fucking starving.”

Where: Brinie Bar at the Engagement Party Who: Anyone! @moorbrookestarters
“Okay, okay, so I was scrolling through Tik Tok before I arrived here, right? And I saw this video and it was about Disney so I was like, okay great, it’s gonna be a cute fun video, right! But I was WRONG. They were talking about how Mufasa’s body just disappeared and that was weird because no animals really eat lion corpses expect, except -- get this, right. Lions! And THEN, they showed this scene where Scar was holding the skull of a lion. So basically. Scar ate his own BROTHER.” James’ eyes widened, a look of horror on their face as they spoke passionately to somebody they’d entrapped. “Can you IMAGINE eating your own BROTHER? That’s so MEAN. I thought Disney was for kids but The Lion King most definitely wasn’t.”
