My review about One Piece Live Action (OPLA)

Okaaay, you probably knew that I was one of old Nakama, since I've been following one piece for around 20 years (since elementary school haha)

And honestly when I saw the first plan about OPLA from Netflix.. I have a very great cynicism..because you know how baaaaad most of Hollywood anime adaptation were. The good anime adaptation which I think best was Gintama n Kenshin live action, but that's has major Japanese casts and in Japanese languange. But One Piece gonna have diverse casts..how scary. I really put my expectation bar..really...really low back at the time.

But then I saw the list of the casts and honestly, when I saw Inaki Godoy as Luffy for the first time, I kinda unsure and was like "hmm..let see his IG profile first", and I saw him somehow being naturally cheerful and goofy just like Luffy. And I saw his still from one of mexican drama where he looks really cool and badass. I was like " maybe this kid can be Luffy", my expectation kinda growing.

The cast for SH crew looks promising after I saw their profile..except from Taz because back then he has no IG yet. Very2 limited info from him. But after some times, I can see how he & the other cast really2 love the characters they are playing and worked hard for it. They were working with heart and it's shown..

Oda- sensei gives his thought about the adaptation too..and apparently he was the one who want the OPLA to be happened, tho he will be really strict about it. And I honestly I was starting to believe (I mean if the creator already said so), but great doubt still lingered in my heart.

Some months pass..finally the first picture of the cast with full outfits appeared, the first teaser during One Piece day..my expectation started to grew again. I got really hype tho people around me still really sceptical.

More info about how Oda approved Inaki as Luffy because his audition tape made Oda laughed. How Inaki got a strawhat from Luffy's seiyuu,Mayumi Tanaka, and all original anime seiyuu gonna voiced the chara in the live action too. He got a warm support from Shueisha and even met Oda himself and got a STRAWHAT from Goda? Well I started to BELIEVE!! I mean..this OPLA got support from the original source material!! How very awesome! I want this to succeed!

As a long time fans I got a secondhand nervousness.. I really want this live action to be successful. I already saw how the casts chemistry works really well during the interview etc..I want it to succeed!! I even shared a lot of the promotional media to my IG story which was rarely happened from me..hahaha

and after a bit more wait, the series released Yesterday at 31 August 2023. It's during weekday, on Thursday and the Netflix premiere in indonesia was at 14.00 wib. I applied for leave just to watched this Live action yesterday. How was it?? WORTH IT!!

I am so glad I love One Piece and so happy that my favorite manga got a very well made live action.

Here're some of my faves things & moments:

- Many different approach in telling the story, so it felt fresh!! Because the main point were still conveyed but the location differ and some interaction between characters got adapted to catter the limited episodes (only 8 eps)

- many interesting new interaction!! Luffy and Nami interaction, zoro & nami, zoro & sanji etc..haha loves when SH crew appears

- I got teary eyes during flashback moments (Shanks gave his hat, Zeff advice to little Sanji, Bellemere moments 🥲🥹)

- Zoro very very cool and awesome..and honestly trying to rewatch with JP dub really made him even more WHOLESOME..omg

- when Sanji called Zoro mosshead

- when Ussop and Kaya kissed..hahaha (so there will be romance?)

- when Nami only hugged Zoro and Usopp & Sanji only saw from the sidewalk..

- love Nami theme song because it's pretty and sung by Aurora!

- loves the hidden easter egg: binks sake song, anime ost instrumental, mentioned Jaya, and story of Mobran Noland (even the story book!) Etc

- Garp denden mushi looks cute somewhow haha

- how Buggy looks super creepy like Joker hahaha but I love it! It's super interesting

- Helmeppo really annoying just like in the comic, Koby looks very similar with the comic counterpart too!!

- I love how the story combines SH POV with Koby as marine POV (which should be after vol 45), but it makes the introduction of the world more seamless and easier for the new fans ro enjoy

- JP Dub really a whole other experience!!! You must watch it at least twice I think! Hahaha original voice and JP dub!!

What I don't really like or can be improved:

- need more episodes, 8 was too short and made the story telling too packed.

-This also impacted the timing of the screen which supposed to build up the impactful scenes: like when Gold Roger dies,Zoro almost died from hunger, Shanks arm got eaten, Sanji's thankfulness to Zeff, Luffy's promise to helps Nami and when he yelled that Nami is his Nakama from Arlong park ruins.... it's not really highlighted. Kinda felt like just another ordinary scenes 🥹🥲😭

- somehow Luffy fight not really as dynamic as Zoro, so I kinda feel sad..but in east blue saga he still kinda weak(?) So maybe that's okay

- No Hachi in arlong park, no battle with Krieg...No usopp's little kids crew and somehow Merry died (I know he's more like NPC but it still sad because Kaya alone now)

- a bit more gory with blood etc

- Garp characterization...somehow a bit confusing. He seems a lot stricter than in the manga, and rarely laughing too.. which is okay. But why he really want to captured Luffy is still not understandable for me...? In vol 45 he just want to Meet Luffy as his Grandpa, but not sure in OPLA, is he still want to makes Luffy a marine? (Maybe I need to rewatch it). He contacted the Shichibukai to captured Luffy a bit stretched too..since Garp division in manga should be the part of marine who didn't believe in Shichibukai as 'protector of the sea'.

- how Genzou not have importance to the plot as Nami's and Nijiko's father... He should be the reason for the pinwheel, but in OPLA Bellemere the one who made it.

- Bellemere's name in the EN subtitles only written as Woman.. during Nami episode her name never mentioned and only written in her graveyard (saaaad)

- Sanji needs more screentime!! Huhuhu he just started join the crew in EP 7 and the episodes already finished at 8...saaad. I need more of him too 😭

- the SH crew interaction very limited because of the packed pacing and short number of episodes. I wish they can be explored more. It's funny because the screentime got divided into coby, helmeppo and garp interaction too. They really felt like another main characters.

- how Luffy recruitted the crew also not really highlighted, thus it's a bit weird on why suddenly Zoro want to follow him as his crew. it's kinda felt random..

-Luffy a lot more...wise and mature? I wish he looks more goofy like how Inaki in his IG stories. And because not many interaction with usopp yet..his childish part seems not really explored?

Maybe that's that for now.. but TLDR. It's a fun & fresh live action and I recommend you to watched it and be a new Nakama!

For me OPLA season 1 score was: 8.5/10

Ps. Above was the objective score from me because I kinda particular.. but subjective score with EN dub was 10/10, for JP dub is 11/10 because I love how fun and fresh it is!! (I still rewatching it for the JP dub hahaha)

headcanons regarding akira & family!

HIS BIRTH PARENTS (tw: child abuse, parent death, drowning, cigarette burns, EDS, narcolepsy) 

He utterly despises his brith father, Masaru Emoto. He would work all day then come home and demand that Akira and his wife wait on him hand and foot. When they did as he demanded, their obedience was neither rewarded or appreciated. But when they didn’t comply, their lives were utter hell. Akira’s birth mom, Rinko Emoto, was heavily finically dependent on Masaru due to her having multiple health issues that rendered her unable to work. Specifically, his birth mom had EDS, narcolepsy and COPD. 

Akira loves his brith mom, but hates how she never stood up for herself. He often took up that role, resulting in him getting punished by his father. Because of his father he has cigarette burns on his back and scattered scars on his back due to having a glass cup thrown at him. His birth mother also has similar scars due to trying to protect him in turn.

With the help of his adoptive parents Yumi Mori & Ayaka Nakamura, his father was arrested for child abuse, domestic violence, domestic violence in the presence of a child and blackmailing. Due to the overwhelming evidence against him and the fact that all of this had gone on for years, he was given a life sentence. 

Akira’s brith mom and him lived with his adoptive moms and adoptive sister for a year when his mom passed after falling asleep in the bathtub. Shortly after her death is when Akira’s birth mom’s officially adopted him.

HIS ADOPTIVE FAMILY

His mom Yumi Mori is a regular uniformed police officer and Ayaka Nakamura is a detective. The two, who secretly help vigilantes, help Akira learn about and control his powers. His adoptive sister, Keiko Mori, is a friend of from school, with the two of them both singing in their school’s choir group. Akira loves the three of them SO MUCH and never feels the need to add the descriptor of “adoptive” family. He just calls them family. 

In his DC verse (which has become his main verse, ngl) Keiko is super busy due to working for interpol. She occasionally and secretly has Akira help her with interpol related missions.

 How’s it hanging, nakama?! I hope everyone is ok from this hot, cruel weather so you keep yourself hydrated, wear light clothing, wear plenty of sunscreen, and avoid sun burn. First off, last week’s chapter was totally chaotic as we see Luffy and the gang finally reached the area where Wano kingdom is, but the journey was full of dangerous waves as the gang are swamped by large koi fish and getting pushed around the sea. Oda-san re-created the scene Hokusai’s Sea of Japan storm painting with the koi fish splashing around. GUA! He’s totally gonna input a lot Edo style in this story. Anyway, the koi fish go up the mountain with a stream guiding them. At the end, Luffy woke with a pinch from a crab and encounters a lion and baboon ready to duke it out. Looks like he finally arrived at the destination. What action will he take? Where are the others? Let’s see how it plays out this week. Next, this past weekend’s episode was mind-blowing as we see the gang finally making their gateway, while they run into a familiar homie which was Kingbaum flirting with a female tree homie. Luffy and Nami were happy to see him alive, but Kingbaum was not thrilled to see them at all. So he’s back again being the steed for Nami. Poor guy can’t get a break. Back at the city, all of Big Mom’s crew are taking action to go after Luffy and Bege, but more deadly trouble approaches when Big Mom has again gone through her sugar meltdown, and starts rampaging the city. Perospero was able to calm her down telling her that the wedding cake was stolen by Luffy which is lie to keep the city safe. However, Big Mom threatens him if is lying, she will take his lifespan. He’s a big pinch. At the end, Big Mom flies at a fast speed and caught with them slashing like a maniac. Next time, Nami has a plan up her sleeve that will shake off Big Mom. Will it work? Guess we’ll see. Now on with the goodies! First off, look who came in for quick visit. Yup, it’s our totally fave nakama, Tongari-san. Sorry to make travel in this horrible weather, my friend. So what’s the buzz going at the tower? Tongari-san says that loads of amazing stuff is happening! First off, to celebrate the OP anniversary, the tower will be having lots of talk shows happening for next weekend. They’ll invite many special guests such as figurine creators, game creators of the new OP game, World Seeker, voice actors of the Straw Hats, cast of the PHANTOM live show, and Greg along with some editors of OP. They will give away free tickets to these events. Deadline already past, but if you were able to apply beforehand. You’re good to go. You can invite one friend w/ you to the event, and you can apply once for one show. Winners will be sent an email along with a number. Follow the instructions when you’re given the email. Bring an ID to confirm you’re identity. Schedule of the talk shows are posted up. Next, here are some yummy treats the tower will sell for the summer festival: they’ll have Buggy’s watermelon with pineapple gelatin vitamin drink, his chocolate banana pudding energy drink, Luffy’s citron salty gelatin mineral drink, and Chopper’s small bucket of cotton candy with various flavors. Yummy! Yum! Yum! Next, schedule of photo greet with Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji will be on July 17th, 19th, 24th, 26th, and 30th. They’ll give out lottery tickets with numbers around 6:15 to 7:30. If you see you’re number on the board, you win the lottery. Photo greet will be at 9:00 pm. We’ll leave a link with details for those interested. Next, don’t forget that Corazon’s birthday is coming up and you can still get the birthday bromide card of him if you visit the tower. They’ll also sell, lil’ Sanji no.3 t-shirt that he wore back then. Next, they’ll sell this “don” gold color necklace, clear pouches with the OP logos, and a blue color with the gang on both sides, and this cute blue color OP logo scrunchy. Next, all JUMP shops will be selling awesome new goodies such as these three envelope set of devil fruit designs of Luffy’s gum-gum fruit, Law’s op-op fruit, and Buggy’s chop-chop fruit. They’ll also sell this Japanese cloth of Luffy’s gum-gum fruit good for a curtain decoration or table mat. Next, they’ll sell this neon bar themed goods such as acrylic figurines, water bottles, buttons, pouches, tote bags, Japanese coaster mats, and a big towel. Next, the HELLO OP exhibition in Eihime have more new items such as acrylic charms, a folder, a t-shirt, a mug of Law, and a colorful pencil pouch. Next, Jump WORLD is having a Treasure Hunting event where you try to find as many colorful jewels and you could get a free prize. More awesome the Straw Hat stores will be selling such as these totally rad hats of various jolly rogers characters including the navy hat and key holder hat of Luffy, clip boards of Luffy and the navy, & a long towel of the Straw Hats’ jolly rogers. Next, coming soon in Odaiba, a new OP event is coming up next month called “The Mist” where the gang meet with a mysterious man who ate a devil fruit made him a mist man.  More details will be revealed soon. Next, the 50th anniversary of the Jump exhibition will be serving food dishes from popular anime. The OP dish will have Luffy’s favorite food such as chicken drum stick, fried chicken, veggies, and straw hat rice. Very delish! Next, here is the CD cover album the for entire Island Song collection which will be released on Aug.24th. It will have all the characters songs including Big Mom’s Bloody Tea Party. Next, the title for the next book will be Vivre Card Fan Book which will contain fun facts of OP from fans. Also, if you buy either the new OP Open Door books or any of the volumes, you’ll get a free magnet clip, and if you collect them all, it will complete the picture of the Germa theme. Behind it will have a character collage of Luffy and the others. Last, but not least, here is the new DVD cover of vol.12 of WCI arc that has Yonji. It will be released on Aug.1st. One more thing, here is a new drawing that Oda-san made to celebrate the JUMP anniversary. He drew Luffy with Goku. And here’s a pic of seiyuu of Jinbei (Katsuhisa-san), Pedro (Miki-san), Perospero (Uchida-san) Luffy (Mayumi-san) Ussop (Kappei-san), and Nami (Akemi-san).
