12. Any books that disappointed you?

Julie Otsuka's The Buddha in the Attic... It's about Japanese women who immigrated to the U.S. before WW2 as mail-order brides to Japanese men living in the U.S., who then got sent to internment camps. The lasting impression it gave was that the Japanese were the perfect victims for internment which is perhaps quite cruel, but the book itself is quite cruel. I think it's interesting as a choice to show such an intimate birds-eye view of an entire generation of Japanese women, their lives, their families, etc. while still homogenizing them in the collective we, and then finishing off with their disappearance from American public life, told by the white people around them... It's an indictment of how we have viewed Japanese immigrants that led them to be so easily scapegoated. But I couldn't help but feel bitter when so often the sentiment was expressed that the Japanese were better immigrants than the Chinese, so much quieter and polite and easier for their white neighbors to digest, and well now those white people will be sorry that they're gone... Sometimes it felt too much like it was just seeking pity from those same white avatars in the final chapter, which left a sour taste in my mouth. Maybe it's an indictment of that particular generation who really ought to be pitied by the rest of us for not knowing the extent of American cruelty, but I wouldn't know.

13. What were your least favorite books of the year?

I had to reread a lot of canonical texts and YA lit for my courses so some of them make it onto this list. Others I had the fortune to encounter organically lol.

Yellowface by R.F. Kuang: I hate it when people talk about cultural appropriation

George Orwell's 1984: It's one of those books that have left a huge mark on culture globally so you can't not respect it. Yet I can't get over the yap fest Orwell goes on when Winston Smith is reading from Goldstein's book. I feel like it's one of those things that you can only undergo once and then afterwards once you already know the point there's no desire to go through it again

Robert Cormier's The Chocolate War: What even was this

Cory Doctorow's Little Brother: Pissed me off in both legitimate ways (kids are treated like acceptable victims of state surveillance and don't have rights to privacy and it is genuinely evil how culturally acceptable that is) and in illegitimate ways (poor writing, boring female characters, kind of racist white savior attitude)

Cormac McCarthy's The Road: I wanted to read Blood Meridian actually

15. Did you read any books that were nominated for or won awards this year (Booker, Women’s Prize, National Book Award, Pulitzer, Hugo, etc.)? What did you think of them?

I didn't read anything newer than 2022 actually. I'm a late adopter to everything

16. What is the most over-hyped book you read this year?

I don't know because I don't follow book trends on social media which is how I interpret "hype"

17. Did any books surprise you with how good they were?

The Cement Garden by Ian McEwan... I mean, I loved Atonement, but that was the only book I've read by that author, so I wasn't necessarily expecting to love or hate this one. One of those where you go "wtf wtf wtf" and have to sit there in the dark after you finish it in 1 sitting (it's also quite short).

20. What was your most anticipated release? Did it meet your expectations?

Again I don't keep up with new releases I just read whatever. Friend/mutual recommendations, librarian recommendations in Libby, or going down a rabbit hole online, that's how I find my books. I'm the worst (ex) English major ever

24. Did you DNF anything? Why?

Agustina Bazterrica's Nineteen Claws and a Black Bird because some of the short stories were so boring. I can't find anything intelligent to say about it because I have forgotten it entirely.

@dmzira @tamanbunga123 when Kratos is in the light of Alfheim, for him its a few minutes but in reality it was much much longer and Atreus had been fighting the elves by himself until he pulled his father out of the light. Kratos was mad (I dont remember why but I think he was pulled out just as he started hearing Faye) and Atreus snaps back that Kratos abandoned him again and scream asks why he doesn't care. The wording and realization of how long he had been 'gone' seems to shook him a lot

Am I the only one who thinks that the comic about Diana having a long lost brother (I think his name was Jason) they did when Rebirth started would have been 100x better if her brother was a child instead? I didn’t finish the story, so I don’t know how it ended (I’m assuming he was just forgotten by DC afterward) but I do remember a lot of people hating on him because he was being too childish for his age, so an easy solution to fix would be to have him be a child instead?

1- It would make his tantrums and behavior acceptable, because he’s a literal child (maybe have him be around 10-12 years old)

2- We have more than enough adult white male characters in comic and not enough child heroes.

3- We could have had him be Wonder Woman’s sidekick and male characters being sidekicks to female characters is something we don’t have enough of.

4- The Wonder family is much smaller than the Batfamily or Superfamily, so we need more characters in it.

5- He could complete the DC mini trio with Damian and Jon (I know there’s Cassie, but she’s from Tim and Connor generation)

6- We could see Diana being motherly to her little brother/sidekick, mirroring how Batman and Superman are with their own children.

And it’s just a more fun idea, it doesn’t have to be Jason either, they can just create another character for this.

So true! I always thought of them as Luke and Leia. Considering the fact that the space twins communicated through the force once or twice it’d be cool if when El went into the void at some point, Will could see her. Like when she spied on the boys arguing, I almost expected Will to look up from his table with curiosity upon sensing “someone” there—which the boys don’t notice because they aren’t paying attention to him.

I had a theory prior to season 3 that Will would be able to see El in the void. He seems to be able to hear her based on season 1 (and other media seems to implies he DID see her in season 1)

I actually went from ENFP to ENTP in two years, and I could see the transition. I think becoming more introverted in a year isn’t all that out-of-the-question...

I hEAR you, but in my personal opinion, people don’t change types-- they either fully develop or mistyped in the beginning. You can think whatever you want on this one though, it’s totally IMO. 

On the introvert extrovert thing, the definitions of these words are not directly aligned with the mbti definitions. Introverts are seen as those who are quiet, widthdrawn, and tired by too much people interactions while extroverts are seen as loud, in your face, and energized by people... and then they created the word ambivert to represent those in the middle (which is literally everybody), because these words aren’t really scientifically correct by aNY means. 

ENFPs and ENTPs are introverted extroverts by the previous definitions, but by the mbti definitions, they are extroverts with dominant Nes. AKA, they are energized by ideas. Simply. It has nothing to do with people or the definition of introvert or extrovert. We are extroverts because our strongest function is one that draws from external influences. And given that this external influence is not people, we win the title of introverted extrovert. 

So in quick-rant conclusion, the social definitions of introverts and extroverts base these words off of interactions with people when in typing, this is not the case-- and it leads to a lot of confusion when self-typing or when reading about your type. Alsoooo the difference between ENTP and ENFP is not merely levels of introversion (by conventional definitions).

Whenever I see you reblog an ‘Anne with an E’ post, I Just spiritually grab your hands and hop with joy because “omg? I didn’t know there was a new season/I’m so excited for the new season!” Mind if I had your thoughts on the first season?

I actually found out about the new season a few days ago, it comes out in july??? (here’s the trailer) I didn’t realize how much I’ve missed this show until I saw Gilbert and Anne’s lovely faces. *___*

Okay okay so it’s been more than a year and I might not remember everything perfectly, but. I’VE LOVED THE FIRST SEASON. I’ve never read the books sadly (something I will definitely fix sometime in the future) but I’ve watched the anime back when I was a kid and this story always had a big place in my heart. So I was really looking forward to it! And??? It was great??? There was not a single thing I didn’t like.

Amazing cast, amazing script (”My life is a perfect graveyard of buried hopes.” omg Anne is such a dramatic girl I love her???) great secondary characters! Please let’s talk about aunt Josephine, who’s mourning her girlfriend when we first meet her and she’s generally awesome, or Mrs Rachel I-rather-be-pregnant-than-menstruating Lynde, and Marilla that-explains-all-the-children Cuthbert, or that sweet cinnamon roll of Matthew??

AND. Let’ not forget the young boy who redefined my concept of “husband material” - GILBERT BLYTHE. He’s just so genuinely in love with her from the moment he saw her being harassed in the forest (”Need anything else? Any dragons around here need slaying?” CUTIE, where were you when I was 13), and he gets literal heart eyes when he finds out they’re in the same class. HE CALLS HER CARROTS AND STARTS BOTHERING HER BECAUSE HE JUST WANTS HER TO PAY ATTENTION TO HIM?? But see he’s always sweet and smiles at her and he’s not a bully, he knows when to stop. Every time he looks at her he just… smiles and has this soft expression… that gets me every single time… MY HEART.

I’ve loved Anne’s relationship with Diana, and the one with the Cuthbert siblings - they’re such a great family and Anne came from a sad past and an even sadder family and you can see how much she’s excited by this new world she’s living in, she can’t stay quiet or still for more than three seconds (mostly because she has to breathe at some point), she’s always talking and honestly I’m the opposite but I can appreciate her happiness for living, lol. She’s such a great character, and her flaws just make me love her more.

Oh boy I could probably talk about this for a week if you let me but I’ll stop now before I start annoying you, lol. I have so many feelings about this show I’m honestly starting to tear up just thinking about it?? I just can’t wait to watch the next season ♥♥♥

Here are some OC questions to welcome you back(? Or maybe I’m simply curious): Why’s Bernard so spiteful? Why is Gemma so determined to befriend such a hateful person? Does Gemma have any particular interests, a favorite subject perhaps? What kind of relationship does each character have with each other? (Awkward, comfortable, etc.) Thanks in advance :^)

Why is Bernard so spiteful, you ask? Because I made him that way BT

Only kidding. It’s a good question, but I’m not sure there’s an easy answer. A combination of factors have gone into shaping him into the person he is, including his own personality and certain events in his life. I hesitate to call him hateful, though. Although Bernard has said on occasion he “hates everyone”, this is more his dark blend of sarcasm and cynicism talking, rather then genuine malicious will toward others. Bernard just wants to be left alone, for the most part. He’s been through quite a bit of disappointment and hurt with certain people in his life and so he’s come to not expect much from anyone. You could call it a mistrustful outlook, though I think Bernard would call it realistic.

Gemma is Bernard’s opposite in many ways. Their friendship is sort of a testament to the old “opposite’s attract” idea. I think that idea has been debunked for the most part, but in some cases it does hold true. Bernard is the contradiction in Gemma’s optimistic worldview. There’s many things she doesn’t understand about him, that trouble her, in fact. I think her attempts to befriend him are her way of reconciling their two different outlooks. She hopes that he has a fun-loving, light-hearted side deep down. If she can uncover that side of him, they’ll finally have some common ground and her own way of looking at things will be justified. Also, the two naturally bring out each other’s personality and so they genuinely enjoy arguing with one another. Gemma is also a big-hearted person and sees Bernard as someone in need of affection (which usually means crushing hugs and talking/bothering him incessantly). 

Continuing with Gemma’s interests, she loves the theatre and hopes to be a stage actress. Some other things she loves: Shakespeare, Greek mythology, the color purple, collecting things, bad jokes/puns, spaghetti and meatballs, bugs, hugs, stickers, and glitter, lots of glitter.

For the last question, I guess the best way to describe Gemma and Bernard’s relationship is frenemies. What I mean is, while they do get on each other’s nerves, are always bickering, and usually have very different opinions on matters, deep down they genuinely care for one another (and Gemma may or may not have a bit of a crush on him, though I’m skeptical they’d ever work out as anything other than friends). One of my favorite scenes to write featuring the two occurs after Gemma is ridiculed by a horrible snob of a boy she previously liked. Bernard rushes to her defense and I hope that scene showed that he is actually quite protective of his friend, even if she does drive him crazy. As much as he criticizes her for it, Bernard doesn’t want Gemma to be robbed of her sunny outlook so easily. Though he still won’t accept any hugs in thanks. Only shoulder pats ;)

Albert - Ooh, a forensics specialist. I actually went to uni for a branch of this but decided against it later on. Still kind of want to be one but it would just be too much change and effort at this point. Guess that’s what crime shows are for.

Otacon - Already knew a bit about him. The handsome computer nerd with glasses. Classic.

Psycho Mantis - I’ve seen him from you on the dash. Gas mask-guy? He sounds interesting.

Joseph Oda - Just from the first paragraph on him from the Evil Within wiki I like his character. Meticulous and a note-taker who knows exactly where to look when he needs to puzzle something out. I can really appreciate organisation. He’s also rather handsome as well.
