I've been thinking a lot about Makochi and its culture/society a lot lately, since I'm writing a Wind Breaker fic.

I wanted to talk a little about my headcanons/predictions on why things are the way they are in the Wind Breaker universe.

When I first started watching the show, I thought of Wind Breaker as 'an AU where gangs of teenagers rule the sections of the city and battle each other almost like feudal lords'.... and it turns out that's not actually far from the truth. But I think it's deeper than that. Nii-sensei is a much better writer than someone who would just shrug and say "that's just how things are."

I think Makochi is a city stricken with extreme poverty. We see it with Suzuri and his gang of orphans that had to beg and steal to keep each other alive, splitting a single cookie among ten people. We see it with the orphanage that Ume and Kotoha grow up in. In that none of our main cast seem to have parents, that there seem to be no middle-aged people in Makochi, just much older and much younger.

I think that sometime in the past, the gangs started to move in on Makochi, maybe paid off the police, and the police stopped doing their jobs. Or claimed it was too dangerous to do their jobs.

And so the well off people and businesses leave the area, taking jobs with them. The city government can't collect taxes to try to fix things from people with no money. There aren't enough jobs, so young men join gangs to survive. And so we get all the different gangs in Makochi, each with their little square of turf on the map: Shishitoren, KEEL, Noroshi, Furin High.

I think that the adults in Makochi accept being protected by these literal children because no one else will. The city and its people were left behind, failed by those in authority, until Umemiya decided to try to change things. That's why the teachers don't mind when kids leave class or go on patrols. That's why the townspeople love their Bofurin boys so much.

pretty obvious one! Umemiya is super confident and positive, even when his ship is being chased by a whole bunch of navy ships. He goes from island to island, recruiting crew members from all over the place, no matter who they are.. (hiragis on life support) In his many adventures, he makes friends with all sorts of people. Some say that the Bofurin Pirates and the Shishitoren Pirates are extra close pals! Maybe even drinking buds?

He also has this little garden where he spends most of his time in, growing and caring for his vegetables and will go batshit if an attacker ruined it.

Hiragi : can you pass me the salt?

Umemiya : huh?? The what?

Hiragi : the salt.

Umemiya : HUH?

Hiragi : *long suffering sigh*

Hiragi : ...the ocean cocain?

Umemiya : Oh yeah sure

At first, I wasn't sure if Nirei would be an archaeologist or the ship's navigator. But, I decided to make him the latter. As a member of the Bofurin Pirates, Nirei is responsible for guiding the ship and its course. Even though he just joined the crew, he will sometimes give orders when needed to keep the ship and the crew safe. Nirei is still getting used to having this job, but he's determined to do his best since Umemiya trusted him with the role!

Nirei's room is filled with a jumble of maps and charts of various islands he and the crew have visited. Did you know? that each map is accompanied by a collection of pictures and personal notes detailing unique features and characteristics of each locale?

Due to Umemiya's empathetic nature and genuine respect for him, Sakura agreed to join him. His unflinching loyalty to Umemiya pushed him to persevere through even the most difficult situations. Sakura feels a strong desire to train diligently to protect both the ship and the crew, and would wipe out any threats, hes always striving to meet new rivals to horn his reflexes and learn new fighting styles.

Sakura is often spotted snoozing on deck, lounging with both Suo and Nirei (though he is reluctant to admit it), or simply relishing the delectable meals prepared by the ship's cook, Suzuri.

for some reason, he kept adding extra to your portion. while you appreciated it, you're worried it'll get him into trouble. but that's the least of his concern.

a/n: is it a surprised if i say i ADORE suzuri? not really. he's a cutie patootie 𖹭

"suzuri". he paused his stepped to the kitchen and looked at his caller. he met your eyes, but the smile that he loves so much wasn't there. instead you're frowning, at him, and he didn't like that. he came to kneel next to where you're sitted at your table, a tips he learned from nakamura when approaching girls to comfort them, "what's the matter?".

you recalled shizuka's comment on your food when you ate together here last month.

"don't your portion seem bigger than mine? lucky!".

back then, you didn't specifically order for an extra portion, so maybe she was right — maybe you're lucky. but then it happened again, and again, and again. now you're worried that suzuri might have used the ingredients in the kitchen just for you. that can't be good. what if his boss found out and he's fired?

so you confronted him with your concern. the whole time, he had his undivided attention on you. when you're done, he nodded in acknowledgement, but instead of worrying, he reassured you that it's not going to be a problem, "those are a portion from my meal, so you don't have to worry about it. i didn't steal any ingredients from the kitchen for my own use".

he watched you paled, not realising that he'd presented you with a bigger problem. "you can't do that! you need to eat well and enough to keep up with your tasks!". taken aback, you suddenly realised that you've been too forward and apologised. suzuri responded with a shake of his head, not bothered by it.

"i'm sorry myself. i didn't mean to upset you", he said quietly, now looking at the ground, feeling somewhat shameful about it.

at that moment, shizuka's voice echoed once again in your memory, another bit of her after commenting on the extra portion.

"maybe he likes you".

with shaky hands, you cupped his face to look up at you. from his point of view, your face was slightly red. he didn't know you could look prettier than you already are.

"w-what if next time you take me out for a meal? that way you can still eat up your portion, and i eat mine, as much as you'd like for me to eat! then.. we can hang out! w-we can play a game or two if you'd like that".

suzuri, as it turned out, had forgotten how to function due to your sudden invitation for a date, something he had been planning to do when he's ready, emotionally and financially. you had to call him out to made sure he's still with you.

"i don't think i'll be able to do that anytime soon. there's still too many things need to be done-".

"i'll wait for you! as long as it takes, i'll wait for you".

that moment, suzuri felt that he'd been blessed once again. it's a miracle for someone like him to be able to be close with you. how could he possibly repay your kindness? will loving you with all his heart be enough? he didn't know.

alas, he took your palms in his and squeezed them gently, holding them like the treasure you are, "thank you".

He's got this. Outwardly, he looks confident, and your nerves are soothed as he tells you he'll deal with it. Goes in for the kill, but the sickening crunch has him feeling queasy for a while. Scrunched up nose if he looks too close while he's cleaning it up, but ultimately considers it a win when you kiss his cheek and call him your hero.

Hiragi, Suo, Tsugeura, Enomoto

Thinks he's got this, but once the bastard starts skittering towards him, he's running with you(or without you) in his arms into the other room.

Togame, Kaji, Sakura, Sugishita, Endo

Picks it up in a cup and just throws it outside. Maybe even picks it up bare handed. Not bothered in the slightest, which has you more concerned than the spider did. Please go wash your hands.

Chika, Choji(barehanded >_>), Umemiya

Screams with you. That's the spider's house now. Actually might call someone else to help with it because it's gotta be radioactive to be that size.

Nirei, Kanuma, Kusumi, Kiryu

It's a team effort between the two of you. You're both poised and ready to strike, one with a can of bug spray and one with a broom/shoe/heavy book as a weapon in case the spray doesn't slay the beast. If anything, it's a bonding experience, despite the panicked yelling during the attack and disposal.

Togame, Kiryu, Sakura, Kaji

It's a no mercy killing. There is no regret or upset; this monster simply ceases to exist in a matter of seconds. Kinda hot ngl.

Tsubaki, Kotoha, Sako, Suzuri, Chika, Suo

i had mixed feelings about kiryuu at first cuz i was uncertain about his vibe BUT HES AMAZING

kaji is a favourite too!!! his headphones, lollipop and hoodie is so iconic. i also love his parallel to sakura! sakura has someone to ask advice for who’s similar to him :))

introducing the four kings of furin/bofurin!

MOMOSE, the zojo king (the guy with a hood and sweater paws) we don’t know much about him yet (i hope we get more) but i just like him so he’s a favourite! so my top three are kiryuu, kaji and momose, in no particular order

tsubakino, the jikoku king (the one in the second frame)! the way the whole town just accepts them!! and their crush is treated like any other normal crush! they’re so older sibling vibe i love them so much

hiragi, the tamon king (the one in the third frame)! the dad of the group and the one who pops those stomachache pills/tablets like it’s nothing. tbf having to deal with the leader of furin, who legit yells into the broadcast mic thing, isn’t easy 😭

mizuki, the komoku king (the guy in the first frame)! nothing much is known about him either but he’s seems serious and is the strategy person of furin. also he takes off his glasses when he fights which is just really cool

also i realise i haven’t said this but the one with dual colored hair (kinda like todoroki shouto) is the main character of the manga, sakura, who’s goal is to be at the top of furin! he’s got ✨ trauma ✨ but he’s slowly learning to accept and rely on people :)) he also blushes at any kind of romance (and also when he’s shy or embarrassed), even hand holding. i don’t know how he’s gonna date people honestly

and of course, the leader/representative of furin, hajime umemiya! he’s really just like an elementary school kid, as Suo says. hes the sunshine character who you wouldn’t wanna piss off. he’s also the one who united furin with the four kings when they used to be a dog-eat-dog kind of school, so major respect to him!

(the next one contains a bit of spoiler on suo?? idk but just a warning. it’s more of a mini analysis)

a more formal introduction of suo and nirei, sakura’s vice captains and the supporting characters! nirei is good with people and collects information on people in his notebook. he’s the sunshine in the trio, and the other two are the sunshine protectors! suo is a joker, but don’t let that kind face get to you. he’s like the main instigator of most of the (harmless) shit that goes down in 1-1. he’s also mysterious with little information about him. oh and he doesn’t eat?? not in front of other people at least. i really wanna know his backstory tbh

but also:

suo. hes mostly easygoing with a smile on his face all the time. but also freaking scary when pissed off like if someone was looking at me like that i’d run and never look back. yes sakura is right, that’s not the face of someone who’s kind, not in this case. i’ll make a post psycho analysing him later

but he takes fourth on my favourite character list! then tsubakino, umemiya, nirei, hiragi, tsugeura, kusumi, suzuri, choji, togame, the twins etc. the list goes on.

point is: wind breaker is great and i highly recommend reading/watching it.

Major spoilers for MadK!

As mentioned, it’s J’s turn to be picked apart! It’s not an in-depth analysis either, sorry. It is a ramble about his character design! I apologize in advance if this is obvious or boring!

Alright, we’re starting at the bottom, literally. 

Lions symbolize courage, nobility, royalty, protectiveness specifically in a familial way. What’s intriguing is that lions represent both the devil and Jesus in the bible, befitting of J. (Note this isn’t an assumption of Ryo Suzuri’s religion, purely just speculation on design. I’m not religious but this along with the angel wings made me think of it). 

In 1 Peter 5:8 the devil is likened to a roaring lion: “seeking someone to devour,” referring to his deceptive and destructive nature. On the other hand, in Revelation 5:5, Jesus Christ is referred to as “the Lion of the Tribe of Judah,” epitomizing His divine authority, majesty, and ultimate victory over evil. - The Lion In Biblical Symbolism: A Powerful Emblem of Courage, Majesty, And Justice by Digital Bible

I wouldn’t call him a father figure, but he does take on this caretaker-esque role by bringing them to the brothel to “teach them”, it feels like a twisted sense of raising. He seems to take young people such as Datenshou, who in Vol 3 Chapter 16 was shown to be a young incensate when taken in by J.  The obvious view is young and vulnerable people are easier to mold into what you want. I think this leans into J viewing himself as the mentor Wald was to him, but also finding people similar to him, re-raising himself, or at the least self projection. His younger self in Vol 3 appears in chapter 15, and at one point J refers to himself as Wald’s greatest creation. (As much as I’d love to ramble about the metaphors of owning names, this will already be long)

Both J and Makoto cannot see themselves outside of their creators, with J’s third eye that he gouges out alluded to being Wald’s as J says “It was the eye of someone who cursed me a long, long time ago. Though I guess you could say I went to them to be cursed.” Earlier in the chapter younger J wanted to choose how he died if he couldn’t choose where he started. The only physical difference between Wald and J’s fate is that J fully passed on at the end, but Wald was forever stuck in his mansion. J was trapped mentally and physically for centuries after Wald, taking on the role of nobody led to no one truly knowing him. With Makoto he could finally rest, Vol 2 at the end of Chapter 16 J says while embracing Makoto after he forced him to kill his own father, “Hate me all you like…and quickly climb up here with me.” (The art is stunning here oh my gosh I could gush about it forever!) Once again J is choosing how he wishes to die, but it succeeds. I guess in this way you could argue it’s a metaphor for J killing himself, he’s transferred so much of himself into Makoto, but maybe that’s a reach who knows.

Onto the wings! Obviously, they’re associated with angels (honestly I would’ve loved it if he said ‘be not afraid’ like those biblically accurate angels when Makoto and him first met, it would’ve been beautifully ironic but that’s just me) but they quickly made me think of Lucifer. I highly doubt this was intentional, I just find it interesting that J is called an Archduke and that Archangels (from my research!) are sent to personally oversee and assist humans with a range of issues, do with that what you will. 

Something I appreciate is art seeming touchable. A popular example for me is Vittorio Reggianini, please do yourself a favor and look up his paintings! The way he paints such vivid textures not only shows his understanding of art but also his dedication and skill. 

Not only does Ryo Suzuri draw wings beautifully, but she also draws them in a way where I feel like I could reach through and feel them. The silky feathers, the soft and curved bone. I admit it looks quite nice to be wrapped in those wings, not only do they look soft to the touch they look safe to be embraced within, their size encouraging the appearance of safety, being shielded away from the outside.

Oh and the hair!! I am a sucker for seeing how different artists draw hair, and even more so for curls. I’ll admit part of that is my inability to draw them, but the first thing I thought when I saw J for the first time was, he has great hair! It’s just so luscious! There’s a scene in Vol 1 Chapter One when J is comforting Makoto and I stared at it for at least 30 seconds. He has this devilish angel quality that I mention so frequently because it’s so wonderfully done I refuse to shut up about it. 

The way his hair frames his face almost like smoke as he gazes up at Makoto with eyes full of acceptance and promise, his assured smirk with Makoto in his grasp, ugh! 

What I wouldn’t give for an artbook of this manga, I’ll make my own deal with a demon if I have to.

-Tsubaki putting on the Older Sister hat to lovingly but firmly lecture Shizuka on her actions without going too far, we love to see it (also again all of what he said can apply to Sakura in the next arc)

-everyone talking about how Shizuka and Nakamura should date already has the same energy as the “hey you two should kiss!” meme lol

-Sakura questioning Nakamuras “it doesn’t matter if we win or loose” mantra and naively wanting a scenario were no one gets hurt *looks at the next arc* uwwwoooiggghhhhh

-I like that even tho Shizuka completely empathizes with Gravel (since they’re all from Sunaba) she’s still visibly a little freaked out by them when Suzuri apologizes, good characterization

-god Endos introduction is so good, smarmy guy coming out of nowhere to be the mastermind behind the last two arcs, implies Sakura should be a loner and gets jumped for it, looks like a dumbass jumping off a roof, just overall acting like a dick. It’s great I hate and love him lol

-Ngl the jump from Endos introduction to the restaurant back to Endo was a little weird, I get why it played out that way tho

-the food scene…Suzuri wanting to play games and getting so excited….Tsubaki crying….*sniff* (also Nirei if you value your friendship do NOT let Sakura play Mario Party or Dokapon)

-I think I know how I want the anime to rearrange things to end on Takiishis introduction now

-also I might be overthinking it but it’s interesting that Nakamura seems to know Endo?? I don’t think he went to Furin so maybe Endos hung around Keisei Street before, or he knows about him from Tsubaki and Ume. -great arc!! Could argue the start is a little slow and I’d love to see more of the street (maybe in a later arc?) but once it got into the fight with Gravel it really got going and I loved that.

-(also there are several Suo panels I’d like to point too to show to people who think he doesn’t care about Sakura/his friends, he may be a liar for fun but he does not play when it comes to them)

God honestly I'm so glad I dodged HH/HB and my interest in demonology came from Shin Megami Tensei instead, SMT's definitely had its moments writing-wise but god everything I hear about HH/HB is truly against my will

Hazbin isn't very good even as a bit of demon media. Its extremely boring, and uninspired. I feel like maybe it it came out back in like, 2012 or whatever when she first had the idea it'd work better. But at this point 80% of it feels super cliché and boring because everything Viv is doing, has been done better or already done worse. (Mostly thinking about all the boring "the first man is a misogynist" Adam stuff tbh)

There's this manga called MADK that has super good worldbuilding and lore for its version of Hell and how demons work. I absolutely love that manga. However, it drives me absolutely insane lmao that Suzuri Ryo said that he thinks the Hellaverse is like, good?

He even did MADK x Hellaverse artstyle fanart and its to be fair, FUCKING ADORABLE but its so funny that he thinks Viv's vision of Hell is like, good from a artistic standpoint considering his art and his unmatched power. Maybe he just means the pilot, because that looked less ugly. ("it gave me heartburn" is hysterical) But also Google translate so maybe I'm missing some bits.

Anyway, yeah. The pilot was cool, but a lot of what could've been was lost almost immediately after. I'm sad, the pilot was funny and I feel genuinely cheated because the point of a pilot is to be like "hey! here's the vibe, do you like it and want more?" And I said yes, and Viv said "cool let me remove all the parts" and I was left with a series I was tricked into lmao

About Me: To start with, my pronouns are she/her and I am definitely an extrovert! I get anxious at times when in unfamiliar circumstances and I am definitely prone to overstimulation but I love being out and about with friends.

Fandom: Wind Breaker please!!

Tropes: I am a sucker for arranged marriages, mutual pining, fake dating, and friends-to-lovers. I also love a good revenge story like Marry My Husband or those ten billion "reborn as a villainess" webtoons. My favorite stories, though, are two people who are trying their best to understand and support one another and get closer thanks to a shared goal. I like "rivals to lovers" but I'm not actually a huge fan of "enemies to lovers" since it's rarely done well enough for my liking.

My Type: I need devotion and loyalty. Someone who will walk through hell for their beloved, even if their loved one would never ask that of them. My other favorite character archetypes are usually Kuuderes, people who seem emotionless on the outside but warm and kind below the surface. I also like the clever types who rely on their intelligence more than their strength. Schemers and trickster types are great fun, though I don't think I'd enjoy dating one because they're often so troublesome.

I also like characters who have their own hobbies and interests. They need to have passions outside of their romantic interest and if they have a big friend group? Even better!

Favorite Characters: My top five in Wind Breaker are Choji, Kiryu, Suo, Sako, and Endo. Though I genuinely love all the characters, even the minor ones.

Icks: I don't think I'd want to be paired up with Suo because I think he'd tease me too much. Choji and Endo also seem a bit too clingy for my liking and more than a little childish on Choji's part.

I don't want to be paired with Umemiya, if possible. He's very sweet but a bit...much for me.

I don't like overly controlling characters either. I really value my individuality and independence. Anyone who would want to limit me in any way by restricting me from seeing certain friends, wearing certain clothes, or would otherwise try to change me are a massive red flag. I want devotion, not obsession.

I just have this idea of you both working in the same restaurant. Maybe because of that one bakery au you did with SakoTia that I adore so much. The others at the restaurant where you both were had side-eyed him a bit, it was hard not to look at him a particular way after the events of the fight that night. He understood he was used to being treated differently He was here to work and build a better life for himself. However, sometimes it was hard to ignore the looks directed at him, the words said in hushed tones as he walked by. Though each time he felt himself beginning to spiral, there you were, with your beautiful laughter and gentle smile that colored his cheeks and made his heart race. His brows furrowed. “And you don’t think any different of me? Don think I'm a powder keg ready to explode?” He moves his hands as he speaks as if to emphasize his words. All he was greeted with was another bout of laughter from you as you shook your head. “But why?” He questions, genuinely curious, so used to being judged for his past. He watches you shrug, continuing your work of prepping ingredients as you spoke. “I didn’t know you then, but I know your character. I’m sure you had your reasons. Kanji wouldn’t have stuck his neck out for no reason and I trust his judgment, I know the you now and that’s all that matters isn’t it?” You look at him finally, that beautiful smile adorning your features once more. “Plus if you try anything, I’ll kick your ass.” You giggle before turning back to your work. His heart felt like it was attempting to escape his chest with how fast it was racing. As he returned to his own work there was a smile on his face. If he was hopeless before, he was absolutely despondent now. He was free falling and he only wanted you to catch him. Okay so I may have gotten just a wee bit carried away but this sweet boy (and you) just deserve all the love in the world and I had so much fun with this.

I want my last tumblr post for the year to be a kind of recap of my year in media. Sort of.

Noone asked but here are my top 3 books and top 3 mangas of 2023.

1. Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao.

This one honestly rewired my brain chemistry in the best ways possible because on God, bloodthirsty, traumatized, polyamourous bisexual revolutionaries is something that can be so personal to me. I can talk from now till tomorrow but I doubt I'll ever be able to fully explain how much I love this book so I won't bother, just know it's amazing. The sequel Heavenly Tyrant will be released in 2024 and y'all know I will be sat. Heavily recommend, read it if you haven't already or I will chew through your walls and devour your immortal soul :>

2. NOS4A2 by Joe Hill.

AHHHSHDHHNSN THIS BOOK...Had me practically enthralled actually, I didn't even notice the length because of how badly I was hooked, lined and sinkered. I loved how human the characters felt, they felt real so I felt a lot for them in return, also the "you get cool powers for the low low price of your own mindscape being stripped away" was fun. There is so much in here I loved, especially the running theme of love in itself, a flawed family that only keeps standing because it's filled with nothing but love, the love between Vic and Lou and Vic herself as a character too. Its filled with an array of amazing characters (except Charlie Manx and the Gasmask man, fuck them) and it flows so satisfyingly. So yeah I also recommend.

3. Confessions by Kanae Minato

Now I love a good revenge plot, especially when it chooses not to go down either the "I've done this so now what more do I have to live for" pipeline or even worse for me the "if I go through with this I become just as bad as you" one. Confessions really scratched that itch for me and it's presented in such a simplistic yet really well written manner, watching the web that slowly being spun and revealed as the plot progresses and when it finally comes together at the end and catches the fly, ohhh it's so satisfying. Also even tho the perpetrators in question were teenagers Yuko Moriguchi said fuck them kids and fuck you too and I think she's an icon for that. Also heavily recommend.

Honourable mention to The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky because it came really close to being in my top 3. It took me 8 months to finish and I'm pretty sure I didn't get most of it but I enjoyed it. There's so much in it to be enjoyed no matter what angle you're reading it from. Its not an easy read but honestly if you think you're up for it, go for it.

My worst book of the year however was The Stand by Stephen King. And for a book titled the Stand I really couldn't stand it, which kinda sucked because I'm a Stephen King fan but my God did I dislike a lot about the Stand. I won't say much but maybe I'm not white or Heterosexual enough to enjoy it idk and honestly if someone tells me it's their favourite SK book I'm going to assume they're either white, painfully straight or a liar.

Now for Manga.

1. Jigokuraku by Yuji Kaku.

Honestly this should come as a surprise to no-one. If you know me, you know I have a terrible case of Jigokuraku brain, like that shit is chronic, literally my fave shounen right next to Haikyuu and JoJo. But yeah I was Jgkrk obsessed yesterday, am Jgkrk obsessed today and I will be Jgkrk obsessed tomorrow.

2. Rosen Blood by Kachiru Ishizue.

Honestly it was everything I thought Diabolik Lovers would be (don't get me wrong I like DiaL but in a very messy, that's the kinda shit you watch from a distance reality TV way). I would lay down my life for Rosen Blood and all its Characters, especially Gilbert (beloved). It also made me want to read more Shoujo so we'll see how that goes in 2024.

3. MADK by Ryo Suzuri.

Honestly I have nothing to say about this except I'm sorry, the voices in my head won with this one. If you know, you know.

Honourable mention to Boys Run the Riot by Gaku Keito tho. Gotta be one of my favourite genders.
