Hi! It would be great to see Buggy and Shanks babies (Buggy who succumbed to Shanks' charm and a bottle of rum 😈)
The aftermath of Shank's charm and a bottle of rum:

We can argue whether Crocodile's parenting track record is indeed stellar.

I love how extreme found family is in one piece. Like they took supernatural line of "Family don't end in blood" and actually made good on it. Because it's not just that the crew found each other even before that only really very briefly Robin, Usopp and Luffy could say that anyone biologically related to them raised them.
Like Luffy had Garp and that's his grandpa but he also had Makino and Shanks and the red hair pirates and they were a family unit and he also had Ace, Sabo Dandan and the bandits and they were a family as well and it's never who mattered more to Luffy or who actually raised him cause they all did. It'd be hard to put him in a nuclear family structure because so many people fill the same roles in his life in different ways and that's great like Kung Fu panda said "that doesn't mean less for one parent it just means more for Luffy"
And that's the thing I think sometime fandom can get very obsessive with trying to pin down who is whose surrogate father/mother how do they fit in the nuclear family structure and while that's fun and there's nothing wrong with head cannon characters that way I also think it's important to remember that not every relationship needs a title or definition sometimes you are just family and that's valid too.
Ace had Luffy and Garp but he also had the whitebeard pirates and his pops same with Sabo and the revolutionaries
Zoro with Kuina and his old kendo master, that was maybe more of a rivals, mentor mentee relationship than whatever Mihawk Zoro and Perona had going on but it's all family none the less.
Chopper with Hiririluk and Kureha. Perona and Moria, Usopp with the little village boys and Kaya. Shanks and Buggy with the Roger Pirates. They might not all have had defined roles with each other but it was still family.
Just like Sanji, Nami, Franky and Law and their more defined Surrogate familes
And people like Vivi Robin Usopp and Shirahoshi who had/have their biological parents/family that love them and raised them.
It's nobody that I've just mentioned properly fitting squarely into any of these categories because it's all complicated family is complicated and its messy and it's big and everyone in your family might not have even met but it's family and it doesn't end in blood and for some people it never started there either.

Shanks has a connection to each of the other current Four Emperors, and he also happens to have received a permanent scar from each of his interactions with them.
In that single conversation between Whitebeard and Shanks, they mention every future Emperor and reference the ways Shanks was wounded in some way based on his relationships with each of them.
Tumblr media
Blackbeard gave Shanks the scars across his eyes.
Tumblr media
Shanks lost his arm saving Luffy.
Tumblr media
And Buggy? Well, Buggy left scars on Shanks’ heart that he still hasn’t forgotten.
I saw this in a fan art, Shanks thinking about Luffy makes his arm throb (that’s why he touches the stump of his arm), Shanks thinking about Blackbeard makes the scar over his eye throb, but Shanks thinking about Buggy makes his heart throb 🥺❤️
(“So your arm - “So your scar -“ “So your, uh…ex-situationship -“)
Was it really just a coincidence this one interaction had all these references to the future Emperors and the way they caused hurt to Shanks? Also the scars encapsulate his relationship with each of them. Blackbeard is a crafty adversary, Luffy is his hope for the future and someone he wants to watch out for, and Buggy is someone close to his heart.
All of the current Emperors have unfinished business to settle with Shanks. It’s worth noticing that out of all of them, Buggy is the only one who dealt emotional damage to Shanks.
Blackbeard vs Shanks and Luffy vs Shanks haven been built up to be these grand physical clashes and battles to prove who’s stronger. Buggy and Shanks’ confrontation has also been built up, but it’s surely to be more of an emotional understanding and reconciliation than a genuine test of strength.
Shanks and Buggy’s narrative resolution of the conflict in their relationship will rely on them finding the One Piece. As it’s been revealed, they actually did want to be with each other, but they wanted different things and didn’t understand that and were hurt by each other because of it. In order for them to reconcile, they will have to reach a satisfying end to their own goals (finding the One Piece) and make up for the misunderstandings and failures of when they broke up.
Finding the One Piece is about discovering the world’s secrets and changing the fate of the world…but sometimes it’s also about resolving the personal issues of two men and getting them back together.

Mihawk was surprised when Crocodile came up to him with the idea of Cross Guild, which was surprising in itself, because it took a lot to get such reaction out of the stoic man. Mihawk's initial reaction was to assume Crocodile had finally gone mad after his fall from grace. But it didn't take him long to see the full picture. Buggy's debt and the sheer amount of men who adored him in his crew...he could be used easily and efficiently. But Mihawk didn't care about all that. He wasn't a businessman like Crocodile, he didn't care about money or power like him. But despite this, he still agreed. There were two main reasons why he did so:
1- He was bored. With Zoro and Perona gone, he was left on his own on his dreary island. (No offence to the humandrills, but they weren't exactly good company) At first he was quite happy about his situation, he did value his solidarity after all. However, that bliss didn't last very long. He quickly found his usual routine to be repetitive and dreadful, more and more as the days passed. Losing his warlord status right after triggered a fuse in his mind. He could do anything he wanted (not that the government ever got in the way of him doing as he pleased) but he realised that he didn't know what it was that he wanted. Crocodile's offer reminded him of the offhand conversations he used to have with Shanks at dirty bars, which brings us to the second point:
2- He was very intrigued by Buggy. Shanks babbled a lot after he had a bit too much to drink, more than usual at least. But he would still have some level of awareness no matter how drunk he was, never letting his guard completely down. This was not the case with Mihawk. They were close friends, something even more at some point, so Shanks felt comfortable enough to open the dam holding back his words around him. Mihawk appreciated this, not only because it was a huge show of trust, but also because of how entertaining his stories were. Stories about wars and victories, the Pirate King and Dark King Rayleigh... It was all so intriguing. But everything somehow always circled back around to one man: Buggy. Mihawk had never heard of him before, but if Shanks' words were to go by he must have been truly exceptional. Shanks used to have this lovesick look on his face whenever he talked about his old friend, sometimes even straight up sobbing in front of him. This man, who was on Gold Roger's crew and made Shanks fall head over heels in love, perplexed Mihawk. How could such a man exist, hiding his existence for so long? Oh, how he longed to meet him.
Unfortunately for Mihawk, their first meeting didn't go according to plan. Marineford was a mess. He wasn't very interested in the government's goals, he just wanted to see how far straw hat would go. That boy's potential shone so bright, it didn't surprise him one bit that red hair also saw it. What he didn't expect at all though, was to run into the Buggy from Shanks' stories, who was being used like a human shield by straw hat. So, it didn't phase Mihawk one bit when his sword cut straight through the man but he quickly put himself back together. The blue hair, the red nose, this couldn't possibly be anyone else. Mihawk had a certain image of Buggy in his mind, but that all shattered at one look at this man-baby in front of him. There was no way this was the man Shanks was praising left and right, right? Or perhaps, Shanks' stories were always tinted with rose coloured glasses and very far from the truth. How disappointing. But still, something didn't sit well in Mihawk's mind. There must have been some amount of truth to the words he heard. He wanted to see more, but unfortunately didn't have the opportunity to catch the clown again, with Shanks arriving and all. Yet here it was, two years later, Crocodile was handing him a second chance on a silver platter. He simply couldn't refuse.
And so, he agreed to playing house with Crocodile. It was obvious why the man had reached out to him instead of, literally anyone else. Mihawk was strong. He had a strong hold on the use of haki, which the other man lacked. He could easily protect them while Crocodile ran the business part of things. They would work well together, covering each other's weak points. The more obvious reason though, was the fact that Mihawk happened to be one of the very few people Crocodile got along with. That man had a habit of making enemies of everyone he came across, which was not surprising considering he wasn't very likable. But that never bothered Mihawk, he did like a challenge.
The more he got to know Buggy, the more he hated the man, which was not what he was going for at all. He tried his best to see any good traits in him, but repeatedly failed to do so. The man was like a soggy, wet mop, who cried at any chance. He was way too easy to push around, and Mihawk kept doing it because the damn clown was so annoying. His voice, his mannerisms all got on his nerves. This was it, giving up was the only choice. There was no way this clown had any redeemable quality. Shanks was just more insane than he initially thought, whatever. It was just wasted time, and he wouldn't waste any more of it.
Just as he had decided on his departure from Cross Guild and had mentally prepared himself to clash with Crocodile (which he really didn't want to do, he actually liked the man) fate decided this was not the end. All the stalking he did payed off as slowly, he started seeing the clown in a new light. It was the small things at first. The man clearly cared for his crew, and it was almost sweet. He'd always put aside time to train in acrobatics with Cabaji, and to groom Richie with Mohji. He and Alvida had tea time together, giving the woman her much needed gossip time. He was more silent with his closer confidants, he let them do the talking while he listened. He let Cabaji teach him new moves, to help him out when he struggled. He laughed at Mohji's horrible jokes. And it wasn't that boisterous clown laugh, oh no, it was much more...quiet. Yet somehow more vibrant. It was genuine. He let Alvida paint his nails, and let Richie lick his face even when it got red and irritated. He was usually known for his grand gestures as the "genius jester", but he showed his love much more subtly to his friends. It was almost refreshing to see the difference. Almost like the usual Buggy was a performance, a show. And Mihawk was finally seeing the backstage.
Then, one day, he ran into him in the library. He was in his colourful pyjamas, hair tied into a bun and no clown makeup to cover his face. No makeup. One look into his sea green eyes and Mihawk finally started to understand what Shanks must have been thinking. This man was beautiful. And he was holding one of his favourite books.
"D-do you want me to leave? Because I totally can! I'll be out of here in a jiffy-"
"No need. You may stay."
Mihawk didn't know what came over him, but he walked over to the other man. "I quite enjoyed that one. Which chapter are you on?"
And just like that, their unofficial book club started. Buggy was a lot more clever than he let on. Mihawk quite enjoyed listening to his opinions about the books they read. One day, it stopped just being books. They'd talk about anything and everything. Mihawk hated to admit it, but this was exactly what he was missing on Kuraigana: companionship. He felt comfortable with Buggy, and it felt way too easy to fall into a routine with him. Buggy was knowledgeable on a lot of things. He knew chemistry and physics, spending a lot of time in his workshop working on his bombs. He was also a stellar navigator. Clearly his apprenticeship under Roger hadn't been for nothing like it seemed. And when he spoke of old tales, he wouldn't smile like Shanks did. His eyes were carrying sadness and sorrow Mihawk couldn't comprehend. How fascinating, that the same experiences can bring completely different emotions to different people.
When he wanted to try to see Buggy more from red hair's perspective, his goal wasn't falling in love. But that's exactly what happened. It happened all too quickly. He got back into his farming and cooking hobby, because now he felt he had a reason to settle down on Karai Bari. A lot of his cooking ended up on Buggy's plate. Unintentionally, at first, but it made the clown so happy that Mihawk didn't have it in himself to stop. If anything, he started to spend a lot more time in the kitchen. And the escalation of their relationship wasn't one sided, Buggy had also started feeling more comfortable around him. (Which definitely didn't make Mihawk fill with warmth) He started asking things of him like "Can you brush my hair?" "Can you watch me perform this trick?" and Mihawk found that he was losing his ability to say no at an alarming rate. He was falling for the man. He took that revelation with grace, he wasn't the type to deny his feelings, unlike a certain someone. (Crocodile's denial of his feelings for Buggy is a whole other story that was happening consecutively to all this) And as he watched Buggy polish Yoru with careful hands and focused eyes, he found it all too easy to understand Shanks. No wonder this man had an army of men following him, willing to do anything he said. Buggy the Clown was dangerous, and he just added Mihawk's name to his long list of victims.
Mihawk's mouth curved upwards as he took the shiny sword from a smiling Buggy. He found that just this once, he didn't mind being a victim at all.

i keep going back to this moment. obviously there's the palpable devotion from zoro towards luffy which is all very insane, elicits the urge to chew through drywall etc etc. but I can't help but get caught on the way this is phrased. suggesting maybe zoro isn't the only one mihawk is talking about here. as in, I'm getting opla shuggy rant energy, i.e.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
which is about as blatant and transparent as it gets in terms of the older wiser figure with a connection to shanks speaking about his own experiences (under the weak veil of this being about Luffy). but back to mihawk talking about zoro whilst also talking about himself. I'm having to extrapolate a fair bit here given my limited knowledge of his history, but here's what we do know - mihawk never belonged to a crew, was a "rival" of shanks before he "lost interest" in killing him at some point after he lost his arm ("it's always for the sake of another" - given how powerful shanks still is at this point - one of the four emperors - i'd like to think there's something more to this).
when zoro falls to his blade outside the Baratie and he tells luffy "that's a more treacherous path than even mine" after hearing his main goal is to become king of the pirates, do you think perhaps there's a chance he's projecting some old buried anxiety/fear from his youth about the thought of facing shanks, standing by his side and falling. It's giving "I am not worthy until I prove I'm the best", which if true, was followed after many years by "Now I am the best and it's hollow and empty and I regret all those days I could have had with you".
luffy gave zoro direction - a greater purpose and a family. luffy enables his aspirations, but he also provides zoro the freedom to have something more than just this obsessive structure where the only thing that matters is becoming top dog - something beyond years and years of endless relentless training fueled in part by his loyalty to kuina but also the grief of her loss. without luffy, zoro could very likely have followed mihawk's path, something @joyish-little-boy pointed out in one of @assiraphales' posts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
despite being recognised by the world at large as the greatest swordsman alive, and supposedly having achieved all there is for him to strive for, mihawk has never struck me as a man awfully satisfied with where he is.

zolu and while they don't care about traditions or someone else's "yes" except each other's, they both choose to ask for each other's hand to avoid any conflict in the future (per Nami's and Usopp's insistance)
Luffy asks Nami first, because he thinks it's only fair she gets to give her okay since it has always been them three, in a way, of course she says yes, even tells him half of Zoro's debt is now forgiven, next, it's Chopper (who's already Zoro's best man, mind you) and between cries of "don't think this makes me happy, you bastard!" and a bunch of "yes, yes, yes" he gives them his okay, then Luffy asks Mihawk and Perona, much to Mihawk's amusement and Perona's annoyance (meaning she's actually touched about it), and it's not much asking as it is announcing it. then he asks Johnny and Yosaku, and he has to wait for like half an hour for them to stop crying and give him their "yes", and when they're in Zoro's home island, he asks Koushirou (and if they're not quick with that visit, it's because Koushirou probably would start telling embarrasing stories about Zoro and how he tried to use like twenty swords to fight when he was a kid) and finally, he asks Kuina, when they go to visit her grave, she's the only one Luffy greets properly, and the only one who's actually asked if she's okay with Luffy marrying Zoro.
Zoro starts with Jinbe, who right away tells him what an honor he thinks it is to be considered someone so important that he's asking him of all people for Luffy's hand, then tells him that shouldn't even be a question, because if it's not Zoro who he marries, then who else? then, he probably asks every single strawhat, more or less, because at the end of the day, it's their captain too, and even if he rather die than ask the shit cook for his opinion on the matter, he knows this is important for them too. everyone says yes (except of course Sanji, who says something along the lines of, "Luffy deserves someone better than a good for nothing mosshead, but if that's what he wants, then sure") next is Sabo, who does an excellent job of scaring Zoro half to death when he straight tells him "no", thank the devil he's only joking, laughs in his face about it amd everything, and even if he tells him there's no one better for Luffy than him, he makes it extremely clear that if he were to do anything to make Luffy even frown, he'd make sure to hunt him down to the ends of the ocean to erase him from existence,
after he's made sure to ask the strawhats and Sabo, he dreads (slightly, anyway) the fact he now only needs to talk with like half of the Grand Line and then with the infamous "Makino" back in Luffy's home island to be finished with the whole thing

I don’t know what it is about Shanks to me- his emotional immaturity? His drinking? His needling, putting on a show and being a silly guy behavior? His deep seeded trauma, daddy issues and emotional repression? he’s a red head? but..
That man needs to be topped desperately.

No but actually I've been really thinking about it and Mihawk just doesn't do shit by halves does he? he's so obsessive.
He doesn't just like red wine it's literally his favorite food
He doesn't just like swords, his is practically his soul made physical. Yoru is so coded in his dna that they literally had to make a replica for his clone.
he isn't just into swordsmanship he literally became the world's best and strongest swordsman
He doesn't just like to duel he's overdone it so much that no one can hold his interest anymore
He didn't just kill marines he was the literal marine hunter.
He doesn't just wait for Zoro at the top he collects every single bounty poster obsessively tracking his rise
He doesn't just let the kids live with him he adopts them, and teaches them how to be stronger. Doesn't let Perona go until he knowns that he can no longer properly guarantee her safety.
He can't just have a garden he has to go full on farmer strawhat and all.
He doesn't just like Shanks he wants to consume him whole he let's the memory of their duel haunt him and even 12 years later he can't fully forgive them. This might be the single most important relationship in his life.
There isn't a moderate bone in his body. He's either making decisions just because or letting them consume him whole.
I bet it's all the Catholicism.

Thoughts on shanks using haki during sex??
yeah you know ive maybe thought about it
--
“I don’t take orders,” Mihawk murmured, halfway to panting.
“But you want to, don’t you Hawkeyes? Just like you want me to beg for what you want, but won’t say. You want this,” Shanks purred, laughter chasing every rumbling word, and disbelief haunting every laugh, “or I wouldn’t be able to make you kneel at all.”
Mihawk trembled. A kiss met his cheek, chaste as the moon was pale.
“Kneel,” Shanks begged into his skin, haki settling like heavy fingers across Mihawk’s neck, “for me.”
Mihawk knelt.
No, that wasn’t right. Kneeling was an oath, willingly given. Kneeling was gentle.
Mihawk didn’t kneel— he was forced to kneel. He slammed down, body shuddering through a thousand shocks and tremors. It wasn’t graceful. It wasn’t kind. It was a stumbling, crude movement, one better suited to a novice than a master. It ended with Mihawk panting, kneeling, unmoored from his jesses but for the hand, heavy across his neck.
It was magnificent.
