I’m gonna ramble a whole bunch of bullshit about fans and shipping and whatnot as these thoughts have nowhere else to go and I am an Elder so maybe I do have some insights? Also I can’t remember how to do a keep reading so TLDR.

So I went to back to look at Buck and Eddie stuff and the more I think about it the more I don’t think I ever really truly ‘shipped’ it. Imagination did too much heavy lifting, for sure. I think being older meant we used to just have looks and perceived subtext so it just got out of control and was relatively harmless. It’s why I want to orphan/delete my Buck and Eddie fics as I just don’t believe it? I think male friendships are so woefully underwritten, and speaking for myself, it was nice to imagine falling in love with your friend.

I think also, as is inevitable, now we have more pieces of the puzzle such as Buck saying he’s always checked out guys’ butts but he never clocked Eddie’s 🍑? Because they were friends and he doesn’t see him that way.

This is where the elder part comes in. It reminds me of Jensen Ackles’ visual (understandable) ick over Sam and Dean shipping, and I think why he was so grumpy about people shipping him and Cas until he played into it himself. As an actor it must be irritating to be told you’re playing something the way you’re not intending to. Whether Dean and Cas was actor bleed from him and Misha too, who knows, maybe it’s embarrassing to realise you did it by accident?

Anyhoooo, was just thinking about how now we’ve seen OS act as if he’s attracted to a man (He can’t stop thinking about him, he has a cleft, he’s so cool) then it must be so fucking annoying to be woobified and insulted everytime you dare to take a peek at your social media only to be told you’re secretly acting something else out entirely.

Just some thoughts.

I don't watch the OG but I tend to read crossovers when I'm really stuck for something new to read and a lot of them really make me wonder why the Buddie shippers actually ship Buddie at all. If the fics are accurate, then Eddie is a dick who turned his back on Buck and shut him out of his life when Buck was at his lowest. If, as I suspect, the fics aren't really an accurate reflection of what actually happened on the show and it's just fans woobifying Buck, then I have to wonder if they like Eddie at all because they're so quick to throw him under the bus to make Buck out as the poor innocent snowflake who has done nothing wrong ever in his whole life. When I read these fics, there's rarely any pushback or people defending Eddie in the comments so it seems like it's a fairly accepted position in the OG fandom. I don't think I've seen any crossover fics where Buck is in the wrong and has to come crawling for forgiveness to Eddie. Maybe there's lots of them like that that aren't crossovers, like I say my knowledge of that fandom is limited, but I get the feeling that if there was another guy they could ship Buck with, they would happily dump Eddie. I think the LS fandom has a tendency to woobify TK but not to the degree it's done with Buck in the OG and 99.9% of the time Alex is the bad guy in those kinds of fics and Carlos isn't demonised for the sake of TK whump. The crossover fics have always made me grateful that the Tarlos fandom is more balanced and equal in their affections and there tends to be a 'both sides have valid reasons to be upset' when it comes to Tarlos disputes. Hopefully the TK versus Carlos discourse will remain a small minority of the fandom.

The entirety of my knowledge of Buddie is from the crossover episode and from reading like 3 crossover Buddie/Tarlos fics hah but this is super interesting????? I am not unfamiliar with the fandom phenomenon of like people creating a personality for a character in fandom that doesn't actually exist in canon (and then usually getting mad at anyone who doesn't headcanon it the way they do). That's a super common thing fandoms do, especially when they are aggressively shipping a couple that is not actually queer/together in the source material. It's easy to get lost in the invented version of a character that doesn't necessarily mesh with the canon because you're making the character who you desperately want them to be, rather than who they really are. I'm not gonna be obnoxious and say LS fans are better because there are assholes everywhere but shipping a canon couple definitely cuts down on this sort of thing.

So I love reading fanfiction and until recently, I only excluded some very specific tags and never muted anyone because of some mixture of fomo and not wanting to create an echo chamber. But then, a few weeks before s7 started, I thought why am I doing this to myself and started muting anything Buck-woobifying with the villanous Eddie and bullying 118 bs- and I just realized I am SO glad I did that already, because even so some of the jealous homophobic Eddie tropes slip through but I don't even want to know how bad it would be right now if I was still just filtering for fics with Eddie in it.

(I'm never going to tell people what they can and can not write about obviously, but I'm just glad I noticed in time that I don't have to make myself look at stuff that will only make me angry or frustrate me)

I really hope that maybe we'll still get some sort of apology or confrontation about what Buck did last episode. Eddie did not deserve that, and someone should tell him that.
