Here's one of my ocs that is the biggest lesbian I've ever made and I love her for it

Her full name is Mayara Da Silva Barbosa and she's the esper of Boto-cor-de-rosa(or pink dolphin in english). She also works for the esper union as a OP Chief

In Brazil, the legend of the pink dolphin says that this animal transforms into a very handsome, well-spoken and flirtatious man, wearing white clothes and shoes, as well as a hat. And goes looking for beautiful young women to seduce them. There are different versions of the legend, some saying that it transforms during any festival in riverside communities, and others that the transformation only happens on the full moon of June, during the festivities of Santo Antônio, São João and São Pedro.

So I decided to make it's esper into a raging lesbian in a suit because I can

Here's the first drawing I made or her + some fun facts:

I was originally planning to have her be a union scavenger but her color palette does not match the scavenger's dress code because of all the pink

The best way I can describe her personality is a mix between Fabrice and Lynn but twice as flirty and twice as sweet to women

She has a little cousin named Sofia who is under her custody because her parents went missing (and are presumed dead) after a brutal miramon attack in their hometown, Sofia is also a esper and she's a student at the union academy

Although she's really flirty, she'll immediately back off at the slightest sign of discomfort, because she loves women so much that just the thought of making them unconformable is enough to make her miserable

She can summon little spectral pink dolphins that follow her around and do stuff for her. She trained them to gather information for her, send out messages like carrier-pigeons and perform silly tricks to distract people.

The canonical Argentina of my universe is Elvira (her nickname is Eva/Evita thanks to a mutual of mine) and I belive they have the best developed relationship from all my OCs.

Elvira and May are rivals and besties and yet they share some interest for each other 🤭 but they're not in a relationship. None of my characters are canonically in a relationship.

I just draw Diego/Nyo!Arg and Mayara for fun cuz he has a super silly dynamic with May, which I find fun to work with. But Diego is canonically from Kauã's (nyo!Brazil) universe. They have a totally different dynamic from May and Eva. They're just stupid fanatic football heads lol sorta... bromates. 😆

However, I like drawing my friend's Argentina OCs interacting with May. Personally; I like the different dynamics they can have.

There is a phrase made by an Argentine sociologist to describe their relations: "Argentines hate to love Brazil and Brazilians love to hate Argentina", which I find so funny. I disagree to agree. But I think they both hate loving each other and love hating each other.

I call their relationship "o Samba e o Tango". Thanks to this music ❤

Argentina and Brazil had a troubled past of historical conflicts and regional rivalry. And they're still rivals to this day, mostly in sports, mainly in football. Aha. But also Argentina was the 1st country to recognize the Brazilian Republic (I am not saying it was good or not, this is a fact) and during the visit of the President of Argentina to Brazil (1899), I like to think Mayara took Elvira to the Jardim Botânico of Rio de Janeiro. And they shared a nice girly time. 🥰

Also, I remember reading a funny article saying that Brazil and Argentina act like a divorced couple and it made me laugh for days.

I do have a Paraguay and Uruguay OCs too, which are important for telling May's lore. But I haven't studied enough and further of these countries for elaborating more of them; neither I am satisfied with their designs. They had very complicated moments with Brazil.

I may work on them in the future because they're important pieces to the story. And also, Mercosur/Mercosul gang. 😎👍

I used to have a Colombia and Venezuela OCs, but I don't use them anymore.

I have a Chile OC too (I showed him already in two drawings)! I desire to write and draw a minicomic of Chile and Brazil. Based on a historical event named the "Last Ball of the Brazilian Empire". Yes, they had interactions together too.

Trivia: I do have a Peru OC. But she never made an official appearance on here, aha.

⚠️ My HC is that May has a complex of big sister towards the other South American countries. She enjoys taking the leadership of things. And she enjoys helping when she can. But I don't think that the other South Americans got this same vision of her. Let's also remember that due to idiom barriers, May is kinda isolated. So, idk. It is sad, aha. May is not always aware of the other Hispanic countries' stuff, for example. She may feel distant from them, to the point she doesn't even consider herself a "Latina" sometimes (will elaborate on this in the future). But she tries her best to approach them, due to her leadership complex. It is too complicated to explain.

EXTRA: beyond borders of South America:

I don't have an OC for Mexico, but I would like to use a Mexico OC to interact with Brazil. They had some interesting interactions during their times as Brazilian Empire and Mexican Empire.

ABILITIES / POWERS:  Powers depends on what sun she’s under.  Abilities being Rhea is super diplomatic to a fault and takes her rule very seriously.  Her people come first.  Powers being none under a red sun (although she’s extremely trained to deal with weapons and other powers such as telepathic influence); powers under a yellow sun being super strength, super speed, enhanced healing, enhanced immunity (like she’s not immune to people like her or supers but like.  basic.  immunity.  to most things.  i can’t remember the word for this), ability to leap buildings in a single bound! (don’t judge us); powers under a blue sun not being near as detailed but more enhancements of what is mentioned in the yellow sun category, ability to fly, bullet immunity.

RESTRICTIONS:  lead is really bad don’t do lead; red sun lamps/cuffs/etc.

FAVORITES!

FOOD: Something Daxamite in origin that combines the sha-ash fruit with some sort of meat (not quite fish and not quite pork but somewhere in-between (Daxam meat is weird)) and other leafy/rice like substances.

DRINK: Water.  Cinnamon water.  Little bit of lime.

PIZZA TOPPING:  Rhea doesn’t like pizza.  It’s super greasy and the sauce is often way too sweet for her.  (And what the fuck are desert pizzas why is that a thing.)  But she’d probably do spinach leaves and tomatoes.  Possibly chicken.  Artichoke hearts.  Something super healthy and organic.

COLOR:  Rhea prefers darker colors to brighter ones.  She likes blacks, greys, not browns, and unsaturated lighter colors.  Her dress, for instance, is definitely a silvery-green but it’s super unsaturated.  But also she likes bright red.

MUSIC GENRE:  Whatever these two are.

BOOK GENRE:  Philosophy, memoir, autobiography, history, occasionally religion if a partner finds it important.  Rhea likes to learn.  She’s not big on stories.

MOVIE GENRE:  Old musicals.  The ones with a bunch of people actually doing all the fancy dancing.  There’s an almost communal aspect to that which Rhea likes, even if she doesn’t necessarily like the story or the music or really anything about the show itself.  Tbh, Rhea is a news person.  She doesn’t like movies or television that much.  Give her a documentary or a TEDtalk.

CURSE WORD:  She prefers Daxamite Prime words, but fuck if she has to go with an English one.

BOTTOM OR TOP:  Top.  Top top top.  Top top.  Top.  Rhea can bottom, but really only tends to do so with cocky asshole guys who are tied up and blindfolded and pretty much incapable of doing much other than what she wants.  For Rhea, it’s less about position and more about element of control, and she gets SO much more control from being on top than she does from being on bottom that it is her natural preference.  Being submissive, and to an extent bottoming (and receiving), makes her feel vulnerable, and Rhea hates feeling vulnerable.

SINGS IN THE SHOWER:  No.  She might tap out a rhythm on the walls, but otherwise, no.

LIKES PUNS:  When she understands them, she’ll likely groan, but she likes good multilingual puns.  The problem is that a lot of puns are lost on her because she doesn’t have an intricate understanding of the language (and when they’re translated through the translator, the pun is lost anyway).

MOVIE GENRE: rom-coms all the way. But the older ones. Actually, I think Cat has a fondness for older movies, in general--swooning for a Cary Grant type, knees dipping and heel popping for a Casablanca.

SCENTS: Anything that smells naturally rich. I think she loves the smell of well-aged whiskey--that scent of an aged wine barrel that tickles Oak in the back of the throat--the smell of vendor cities and street food in a cultured area. Not the smell of an urban city, but I think she enjoys the smell in theatres (note theatres not theaters) and museums. The smell of books. Canvases. Art. She loves the smell of the beach and the ocean and crisp mountain air. But most of all, as most mothers find, she loves the comforting scent of her sons’ hair the most.

- [ ] Let’s start with the main plot, J’onn and M’rynn. Continuing form last episodes reveal about M’rynn deteriorating health, he and J’onn have trouble accepting and adapting to M’rynn’s dementia. What I think is so great about this is that it runs in tandem with Lena and Sam’s Reign situation, how hard it is to accept reality when it goes wrong and the feeling of loss after. (And good Lord does my heart bleed for you Samantha Arias.) Then there’s the role of J’onn and Lena as support, it’s hard, how do you help and the emotional strain it puts on both parties and feeling of being stuck, not knowing what to do, so relatable. (Which, by the way, I feel will be the precursor to the Supergirl/Lena conflict that’s to come.)

- [ ] That point also ties in with Kara and Mon-El, which was pretty bluntly presented, acceptance and dealing with loss, not just with the relationship but with what Mon-El represented, a culture and people lost with the explosion of Krypton. Accepting that her parents and Krypton were not infallible but learning to move forward, be better. Now, isn’t that exactly who Kara is?

- [ ] Then there’s Kara and Alex, and James. They also work in parallel with each other this episode. Kara and Alex supporting space dad J’onn and James supporting Lena. Support in a way that’s not invasive, and reinforces Alex’s “it’s not my place” last ep but acting as support anyway, reinforces El Mayara from the background.

Everyone is dealing with their trauma and issues, isn’t it just the best time for Pam from HR to make an appearance.

(In a completely unrelated note, I saw someone comment something like “no one beats up Alex Danvers’ little brother but Alex Danvers” when M’rynn was going into psychic bleed and just… hahahahaha … idk i found that just so funny. Okay I’m done. Feel free to correct me on anything here, I pretty much still have my goggly eyes goggles on when I wrote this.)

UM THIS EPISODE WAS FUN???

And when I say fun, I mean there were actual tears in my eyes at least once because I’m always here for some solid parent/child angst.

You’re right – all three of the relationship stories tied together around the theme of loss and acceptance of it. This episode was also something of a tipping point for all of the characters involved: J’onn is now confronting the reality that he will again have to say goodbye to his family and his culture; Sam is confronting the fact that nothing about her life is what it seemed; and Kara has completed the grieving process that we’ve seen her grapple with since 3x01.

This episode was explicitly designed to show us that Kara is rounding out her arc from the front half of the season – it showed her embracing all of the things that she’d been intentionally shutting out of her life when S3 started. She’s back to hosting game nights and laughing with her family; she actually smiled and had fun while breaking up the bar fight; and then she fully closed the door on the part of her past that was giving her difficulty.

The Sam and Lena stuff was brutal, and also a really nice parallel to how M’yrnn was lashing out at both J’onn and everyone around him. Sam didn’t harm other people throughout her process of accepting what was wrong with her, but only because Lena took that choice away from her in advance. J’onn tried to spare M’yrnn that indignity, and the results were very nearly disastrous. So, in the end, who got it right? Where do you draw the line between letting people have their freedom and protecting them from harm? It’s an important question and one that was raised here with much more subtlety than we’ve seen from S1 or S2.

(And think, this easily circles back to 3x01 with Alex and J’onn’s debate about how long to let Kara carry on in her grief without intervention. It’s like it was intentional or something, 😱)

And now to change the subject, JAMES AND LENA WAS REALLY CUTE??? It was also interesting to see him be respectful of the fact that she has things she’d like to keep confidential – James has always been part of the Super story, so we’ve never seen him be on the outside of somebody’s secrets. It’s also a curious hint at how James might differentiate his personal and professional obligations when it comes to Lena and her job. (Remember, this is the same guy who was willing to force Kara into his office to remind her that he was still her boss, no matter how understanding he was as a friend.) We haven’t seen that ethical debate come up re: CatCo and responsibility to the public since way back in S1, so I’m very curious to see how all of this plays out going forward.

Pam from HR was a hilarious cameo that I loved immensely.

Opinions of Dancers - Part II

First off, apologies for the big delay in answering these questions. I’m honoured and touched that so many people are interested in my opinion, but I’m now at a point where I can’t keep up with the questions anymore. I’m doing my best and will try to do better, but sometimes there will be significant delays. Sorry :(

Kristina Spiridonova (VBA student)

I haven’t heard or seen anything of Kristina since 2016, so I’d struggle to make an assessment. I vaguely remember that I found her very perky, but felt that she got a little lost during group performances with her stronger classmates.

Viktor Lebedev (Mkhailovsky, Principal)

In 2010, after graduating from VBA, Lebedev received an invitation to join the Mariinsky Theatre. If my memory serves me right, he worked there for a grand total of two days before jumping ship. Mikhailovsky Theatre lured him with promises of roles and accelerated career progression. The theatre has a history of quick promotions (recently, Julian MacKay became first soloist after a year with the company), which I think is a mistake. Even if a dancer is very promising, promoting them to principal or first soloist so quickly doesn’t give then time to mature (emotionally and technically).  I think that Lebedev is very talented and very promising. I don’t blame him for taking advantage of a great opportunity, but I have a feeling that, had he stayed with the Mariinsky, he would have had a better chance of developing into a serious artist.

Sofiane Sylve (San Francisco Ballet, Principal) 

With some rare exceptions, I’m not a fan of American dancers performing classical repertoire. While I think that Sylve is a versatile and technically strong ballerina, I prefer her in more contemporary productions. Though I do like her very much as Aurora.

Mayara Magri (The Royal Ballet, Soloist)

I’m not at all familiar with her. Sorry. Don’t have an opinion.

Do you have any favourites among the non-principals of the Royal Ballet?

No, I don’t have any favourites, but I was very impressed by Thomas Whitehead (First Soloist) in Liam Scarlett's “Frankenstein”. He had a tiny role of the creepy university professor but he still somehow stood out and was one of the most memorable characters for me. He also danced the part of Swan / Stranger in Matthew Bourne’s “Swan Lake”, which automatically makes him cool in my books.

Checked to see if she's been mentioned but surprisingly she hasn't. Thoughts on Kochetkova? Now that she's been dancing with ABT for a couple of years she is performing classical roles more often in comparison to her usual contemporary stuff at SFB. However it seems like she's just known for being a short ballerina or for her whacky hipster style & Instagram fame. To me she's a glorified gala dancer or at best a company soloist. I don't hate her but her dancing seems to be lacking in substance.

I think it’s interesting that you’d bring up Maria’s status as something of an instagram celebrity in a negative light, because it demonstrates that sometimes social media fame can actually work agains a dancer. It’s a timely remark, as I’ve been talking about the problems of social media a lot recently. I don’t think Masha is a hipster or is disingenuous in any other way. She’s actually very quirky, and her instagram simply reflects what her real life and personality are like.

I’m not a fan of Kochetkova, but I have to disagree with your dismissal of her as a glorified gala dancer. Masha is one of the best graduates to come out of BBA in recent memory. I have to wonder if she would’ve developed into a stronger classical ballerina had she remained in Russia, but I think the path she’s taken works well for her. I think she is a wonderful contemporary dancer and does justice to her school whenever she tackles classical roles. I’m glad she’s joined ABT, and I look forward to seeing what she does next.

Reading Medallion Part 1

I’m currently reading Medallion by @absynthe--minded, so have my reactions

- stuff gets dramatic real quick - I already love Dreya, what a good little queen - so sarcastic - ah yes, the absolutely not dead Mayara - what even is Tamox I love him - fear of heights? SAME - okay, right now there are two scenarios: either Tamox and Saela end up getting together or Saela and Dreya do - Tralnrt is giving me some vaguely Nargothrond-type vibes here (also possibly that one underground city in Eragon) - Don't be mean to Tamox, Dreya - I relate to Melane so much - She probably suffers so much - Also, the woman in the mirror is totally not Mayara - Nevermind my new favorite is Cassy the hyperintelligent squirrel with wings
