Hello Dr. Reames! Thank you so much for all the great answers here on tumblr! If you don’t mind sharing, could you tell us what other historical periods/figures you like, outside your area of specialty? Those that you don’t work with, but like to read about
There are several other ancient figures who intrigue me, but those are still in my wheelhouse. Ergo, I’ll focus on a couple of people/eras that are not in the ancient (Eurasian) world.
First, and this is a personal (family) interest: Mihshihkinaáhkwa, or Little Turtle. His name actually means ‘Painted Terrapin’ but apparently the French can’t handle complexity. He’s the best American Indian general you’ve never heard of before.
He was war chief (eteesiah) and civil chief (akima) of the Myaamia (Miami) Indians, architect of St. Clair’s Defeat/Battle of the Wabashiki, the biggest loss (proportionally) the US army ever suffered (anywhere). Later, he agreed to peace with the US, as he didn’t think the nation could continue to block American expansion west. Americans were a bit like Rome: just kept coming back, even if you beat them the first time.
Tumblr media
Later, he refused to support Tecumseh’s war, in part because of the Treaty of Greenville, but he didn’t trust their British allies or Tecumseh’s brother, The Prophet—but also (quite possibly) for ego reasons. He wasn’t in charge. Ha. It’s an interesting “What if?” to me—what if the Great Lakes tribes had all united to form a blockade, instead of breaking down into old factions? My mother’s family (Brouillettes and Richardvilles) are related (collaterally) to Mihshihkinaáhkwa via his sister.
I’m also fascinated by two ancient American groups. One is Teotihuacan (same area the Aztecs and Toltecs would control later). The other is Cohokia, on the Illinois side of the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers, where St. Louis is today (on the Missouri side). Cahokia is absolutely fascinating. I teach both these cultures (along with the Maya, Snake Town and the SW cultures) in World History, so I know a little about them. I’ve been to Cahokia several times (it’s North America’s “Rome,” in terms of size and scope of trade control), and when it collapsed, at least some of the people in the area stayed and united with the Myaamia and Illiniwek peoples arriving later from the Ohio River Valley area. One of the tribes of the Illiniwek was, in fact, called the Cahokia. (Illiniwek are cousins to the Myaamia. Illinois is derived from Illiniwe.)
I also enjoy the history of some cities, such as New Orleans, Savannah—and Omaha, for that matter. When I moved here, I had no idea what an interesting history this place had.
Last, one of my very first attempts to write historical fiction, back when I was in high school and editor of the literary magazine there, involved the Marquis de Lafayette. It was a very cheesy, quasi-self-insert about a girl who wanted to fight in the Revolution, so disguised herself as a boy. She wound up an attaché to Lafayette. I don’t even remember now how it ended (probably in a love story), but I’d researched him for a school project, then wrote the story. It won first prize! But you have to understand the competition—a bunch of other high school kids. LOL
Tumblr media
I haven’t studied Lafayette since, but admit I got a kick out of it when he popped up in the musical, Hamilton.

Reaction Para.
The second she saw the state Elaina was in, Delphine knew, there was no containing of the situation, there was no room for rational thinking. There was no force in nature that could stop the avalanche of anger. The cold-hearted leader in her wanted to command her people to stay put, but she was not delusional enough to ask for something that was quite simply, impossible.
As much as lots of people in the organisation adored Elaina, this wasn’t just about her. This was about Fran, Dan, Noa, Marine, Marcel, Varden’s son, Maya, the attempt on Aurélie, Yves, Varden... This was about the bottled up misery, pain, suffering and loss that her people have endured since they’ve come to London and it was all about to unravel... tonight.
She followed  Aurélie’s gaze and got the idea who exactly her cousin was looking for. Delphine gave her an acknowledging look and stayed behind, consulting the security how to mitigate the situation as much as it was possible. The night was about to descent into a bigger chaos, and she felt a crushing weigh of dreadful anticipation of what would happen next.
There would be death - there was no doubt about that - her only worry was which bodies would fall before the night was over.
“Follow Aurélie,” she instructed two of her men pinnned to her side, “I’ll be fine, Oliver and Thierry can protect me,” even though the other St. Clair had bodyguards trailing her already, she seemed to be headed towards the thick of it, and she could use the extra set of bodyguards than Delphine did in this moment.
Her eyes looked for Konstantin, in desperate hopes he’d also willing to do something, anything, and just about when she clocked him and decided to take the risk to leave the safe corner and approach him, he barked the order to silence them all.
Until it was no longer enough.
Her instinct was to run after her men, to find Varden, Aurélie, Yves, Jean but she had be the designated survivor. Executives never boarded the same plane in case of a crash. She tood next to her car, her expression barely betraying the inner hellscape of emotions.
“Delphine, we shoud leave now...” one of her bodyguards she’d sent after Aurélie had come rushing back and opened the door of her car, without looking in her eyes.
“No, I need to make sure Aurélie and Varden are safe, we’ll wait.”
“Delphine...”
“What?” The Frenchwoman barked, her patience quickly evaporating.
“There is something you should know...”
All she could hear after the news was delivered to her was ringing and buzzing. Her entire body was shaking - out of anger, grief, fear, confusion. It was a rare moment of utter lack of composure the St. Clair woman was known for. She felt the loss physically, an invisible hand grabbing her heart and crushing her chest. It was a familiar feeling, the one she’d felt when she had been told that Margaux had been killed.
This was a point of no return.
Delphine now had become the last St. Clair standing in the French Organisation and the realisation of her mortality had fully dawned on her.
If she was going to be next, she would go down swinging. This was no longer about saving their empire, this had become about fighting for their existance.

Blues for an Alabama Sky.
Blues for an Alabama Sky.
Dreams Lost.
Robert Massimi.
" Blues for an Alabama Sky " at the McCarter Theatre at the Berlind Theatre is a well acted, very well directed play. Written by Pearl Cleage, the story takes us to Harlem, New York City during the depression years.
The story never leaves Guy's apartment nor his neighbors, Delia ( Maya Jackson). In Lawrence E. Moten lll scenic design, some is left to the imagination, but most of it is laid out for us. Supported by excellent lighting (Sherrice Mojgani), the story unfolds and it is as complex as it is entertaining.
Nicole A. Watson is masterful in that her direction locks the characters in tight; especially the main three... Angel (Crystal A. Dickinson); Guy, ( Kevin R. Free) and Delia.
While it seems that the characters don’t have a care in the world, the second act of this two hour- forty five minute show brings to light the many and vast problems that confront each of them.
In Angel we get a woman who wants the easy way in life. It turns out her world is anything but that. She sacrifices herself for a better life, she uses any means to secure her wants and needs.
Guy is a flamboyant homosexual who designs dresses. Both confident and tough, he Dreams about designing cloths in Paris for Josephine Baker.
Delia is a twenty-five year old virgin who wants Adam Powell, her preacher to help her start a Planned Parenthood facility.
In Dr, Sam, the OGBYN, He relishes bring newborns into the world. He loves to drink and go to the many Blues and Jazz clubs around Harlem. He loves Delia and wants to marry her even though he is fifteen years older than her.
The story gets deep when Alabama Leland (Brandon St. Clair shows up. A proper religious Southern man, he doesn’t believe in drinking during prohibition, homosexuality, nor a woman's right to choose. So Cleage has us taking sides and the sides are volatile.
From the costumes ( Sarita P. Fellows) to the concept of time, "Blues for an Alabama Sky " touches the senses. It is an old school play in that it touches on race, the way that the people who live in Harlem behave. She dabbles in each characters wants and dreams and yet their failures and successes are not the product of society, but as a result of hard work, or lack of.
While " Alabama" is a somewhat political play, it never is in your face radical. While the writer brings out some obstacles, she brings in a real life story that deals in real life.
Where many plays today that deal in political overtones are just to uneven, too filled with hatred, Cleage keeps it more balanced. The characters are likeable even with their faults.
