black&white rilaya soulmate au!
Sameness in the world. Black and white was all there was. Some often-believed color could be brought to your eyes by the touch of your soulmate, others called that insanity.
She took a breath in as she scanned herself in the mirror. Oh, how she looked so plain, so plain and boring. The young woman made her way to her closest and stared at the clothes. Sarcastically she thought, “Black and white? Or white and black?” It was frustrating, but she settled upon a white blouse and black overalls. It was something quite rather more appealing than the usual blouse and skirt attire for the females. But others never expected the usual from Riley Matthews. Finally feeling ready, she made her way to the kitchen, for a moment curious as to why there wasn’t anyone here to join her for breakfast, but she quickly remembered that she now lived alone. It was a depressing thought that lingered in her mind as she took a bowl out from the cabinet, how she had no idea what mom or dad could be doing at this exact moment. Maybe they were getting the cereal out just like her, but laughing and smiling with each other as it happened. The idea made her feel a spark of joy.
“Excuse me? You cannot tow my car!” Riley yelled at the man. It wasn’t her fault whatsoever that she had parked in a black zone. “So, you’re telling me that it’s my fault that there were no other parking spaces last night? I was tired and my job requires a lot of focus, I had to park somewhere! Are you even listening to me?” She complained as Henry, at least that’s what she thought was written on his smudged name tag said, began getting in his towing truck.
“Listen hotcakes,” the nickname he assigned to her made her gasp, “I have other cars to tow and a life to live. You got a job to get to? I suggest you ditch those heels you got on and start running. You know where your car’s at when you need it back!” Henry said before shutting the car door and beginning to drive off.
“Son of a bitch!” Riley groaned frustrated as she kicked a rock, perhaps Henry was correct on how she’d get to her job. It wasn’t too far away…
Many were baffled by the sight of the women running down the streets, with her heels and purse in her hand. Riley checked the time while dodging a hot dog cart and suddenly believed she wouldn’t actually be late if she kept her pace. Yet just because fate decided nothing could right for the poor girl today, ahead appeared a large crowd of people. “Are you kidding me?” Riley yelled to herself. Feeling lost riley turned to the nearest stranger and asked what was happening. “Hippie protest, it’s so stupid.” The man in a suit replied. She nodded and scanned the protest, trying to find a shortcut out of it. There were so many people, men with no shirts on and quite hairy chests, children dancing, women smiling. Suddenly Riley’s eyes landed on another female. She was obvious a hippie at heart, wearing a long flowy dress and flowers in her hair. Dancing along to a song being played by a band participating in the protest as well. Riley admitted, this girl was gorgeous, she seemed so free spirited. The hippie just stood out, which is all Riley really wanted to do in the world.
“Okay, sorry, whoops might’ve been your foot I just stepped on but that’s okay! Haha I’m barefoot too!” Riley said uncomfortably as she squirmed her way through the crowds of people. People weren’t really paying attention to her as she walked past. She felt at a loss of direction and wished there could be higher ground for her to find an exit to this protest. But then in a blink of her eyes riley was pushed out of the bystander’s crowd and into where everyone actually protesting was walking. This could be a good or bad thing, perhaps she could find an actual way out now. Yet before Riley could even begin looking for a way out someone grabbed her hand and began dancing with her.
“What the…” Her eyes widened as she realized she was dancing with the beauty from earlier.
“Sorry…” The girl waited for Riley to fill in the blank, “Riley, my name is Riley.”
“Sorry Riles, you just looked so lost and confused. I though a dance could help you cheer up a lil.” She said grinning, she wasn’t wrong. Riley already felt a little calmer.
“Thanks… Listen, do you know how I can get out of here? I’m going to be late for work and I-“ Riley stopped midway of speaking due to what she was seeing. The world seems to slow down and the tint of the hippie’s eyes got brighter, more… alive.
“Sorry but, what’s your name?” Riley had to ask.
“Maya, my name is Maya Hunter.” Maya said smiling.
Riley smiled back but was baffled as Maya’s hair began slowly going from white to another color.
“I…”
“Riles, I can show you the exit if you’d like.” Maya cut her off and stopped dancing.
“Oh gosh, thank you.” Riley said gratefully, a little disappointed that they had stopped dancing though.
Maya held Riley’s hand as she dragged the girl through the crowd to a nearby parting of the streets. Riley thanked the girl yet was surprised when Maya asked for Riley’s phone and started putting down her phone number.
“You’re quite rad, Riles. How about once you’re done with your work and boring stuff you give me a call? Okay? Have a colorful day sweetie.” Maya winked giving Riley her phone back and running back to the protest.
“Colorful…?” Riley mumbled to herself as she looked down to her phone, watching as the case turned from black to a lighter shade of… purple?
The entire rest of the day at work Riley couldn’t think straight. She would look at certain things and they’d slowly fade into a new color. And somehow, Riley just knew the name of its new color. Once her shift was over she pulled her phone out and tapped on Maya’s contact. She began typing into their messages, “you, me, 8pm, brevin’s café. whatcha think??” She smiled to herself as she pressed sent and began walking out of the building. You’d assume she was a teenage girl waiting for her crush’s text back due to how happy her reaction was when Maya texted back.
“sure thing!! should I bring money? are we just meeting there?”
Riley giggled as she texted back, “don’t bring anything except ur hippie self, peaches.”
She began walking to the café, and the world had more color. And now, she wasn’t complaining. The way everything was this morning and in her life before… all black and white. Perhaps this was a sign, maybe a call for riley to wake up. But she believed that Maya had caused this. Maya was the colors brought into Riley’s life. And even though they had just met, looking back at the protest, riley saw so much in the girl.
Riley got to the café and Maya was already there. They sat down and spoke, they talked about everything. And honestly, Riley had never met someone like Maya. She was alive, and not like everyone else. She was breathing and laughing and so happy. It was if Maya could already see color. As if Maya knew what was out there, beyond the white and black. And it was weird how this had all progressed from Riley just needing help finding a shortcut to work. How this was all caused by her car getting towed. And how insane this one pure, beautiful, down to earth women in front of her was making her feel. While she had always been warned about how weird and crazy hippies could often be, Riley possibly had found her soulmate in one of them. She knew because now there was no black and white. There was color.
