You got it baby 🩵

Buck would like to think that he knows Eddie. Knows his mannerisms and his thoughts and his feelings (even when he doesn’t share them). But lately, something has been completely off about it. He knows it’s about the well incident m. He knows that Eddie isn’t sleeping properly because of it. And that he has been experiencing bouts of what seems like claustrophobia. But it feels like Buck is prying every time he asks.

That is until Eddie almost punches a guy from B-shift for even bringing it up. Luckily, Bobby manages to get in between them first and Eddie almost storms off to the locker room like a petulant child.

“Hey, uh-… are you okay?” Buck asks carefully as he stands in the doorway for a few seconds, before he goes in, closing the door behind him.

“God, I wish that you’d stop asking me that all the time! I wish that everyone would just believe me when I say that I’m fine!” Eddie turns around on his heel, facing his locker.

Fine.

I’m fine.

I have to be fine.

Buck scoffs, not believing the tough guy act for one second. “Maybe people ask because they can tell that you’re not fine, Eddie! Maybe I’m asking because I can’t see that you’re not fine” Buck points at himself as he approaches Eddie. “Hell, I don’t even think you know what the word means anymore because you’ve been saying it so much!”

“Buck, just-…” Eddie rests his palms against the cold metal of his locker, trying to calm down. “Leave me alone. Just go”

“What if I don’t want to go? What then? You’re gonna come at me like you came at Quinn?”

Eddie clenches his jaw but he’s not mad at Buck. He’s just exhausted and on constant high alert. “Fine!” He says, his words slightly louder than expected. “You want to know what’s really going on me?”

“Yes” Buck’s demeanor softens as he slowly makes his way towards Eddie, sitting down on the bench behind him.

“I-… I’m scared” Eddie admits quietly but the words feel like they’re echoing in his mind. “I’m a grown man and I’m scared all the time. I’m scared of the dark and I’m scared of dying and I’m scared to close my eyes and I’m scared of crammed spaces. And I-…” Eddie can feel his heart pounding against his ribs and his vision starting to blur, his breathing quickening as he tries to grasp what’s happening.

“I don’t know if I can do this job anymore, Buck. I-… I can’t almost die again. I’m scared to-…to be alone in the dark again”

“Hey” Buck says gently as he gets up, a carefully hand on Eddie’s shoulder and that’s all it takes for Eddie to almost stumble into his arms, Buck instantly making space for him. “You’re not alone, Eds. You’re safe, okay? And I’ll do whatever I can to help you” Buck feels warm tears running down the side of his neck and it doesn’t take much detective work to know that they aren’t his. “You aren’t alone. I’ll be here. I got you”

“Come home with me” Eddie says, almost mid-sniffle as he slowly steps away from Buck. “Not-…not like that, I just-… I just feel better when you’re there. When you call me at night, refusing to leave me alone on FaceTime, that’s-…that’s when I feel better”

well thanks for finally making it clear that you don’t care or believe what happened to maya. she has addressed people saying it’s fiction and whatnot multiple times already. yall are doing most typical victim blamey shit questioning the way she did things like do u hear yourselves?

and a grown man getting with a 17 year old then lying about her being 18 to save face is a lot more than just “kind of weird” but everyone’s ignoring that part.

i didn’t say it’s fiction. maya did. and i’m not saying nothing happened to her. i’m saying We Don’t Know which parts of that book are true to life and which have been exaggerated. she was a kid at 17 but she’s not a kid now and she has unlimited resources at her disposal. where are the adults in her life to guide her? where are her parents telling her if she says her book is fiction and only parts of it are based on things that happened to her, people won’t know which parts those are? i know about her at home abortion because she spoke about that but i don’t know anything else that’s true because, again, SHE said her book is fiction. that is not on me or anyone else. no one is ignoring anything, you’ve just hated liam long before he had anything to do with maya

so after burger ramen won the poll by a landslide i learned that ramen burgers ARE apparently a thing??? and i kind of hate them??? but it seemed like something Maya would be into so here it is.

so in the text messages it’s shown that max and safi attended vinh’s halloween party before the events of the game and my mind has been spinning about how that went lol. i know both max and safi ended up getting wasted by the end of it but i was wondering if you had any headcanons about that particular night? specifically with how max and vinh interacted with each other considering how they would most likely still be in the early stages of getting to know each other.

i also wonder what their actual costumes were?? especially considering how safi seemed to really want to show vinh up in that department lmao.

aha. well! it’s very funny you mention the party, because i am drafting up a fic that takes place after and during it for a safi/max piece … so i’m afraid i’ll have to be pretty tight lipped about some aspects.

though the costumes i tentatively picked out for this fic and vinh’s halloween party is from a real world show called yellowjackets : a two season show about girls being stranded in the wilderness and losing their minds … to be as vague as possible. i personally love the show, so this is minor indulgence on my end! but there is some significance to my pick even if some fans won’t understand the reference. safi attends as ‘the antler queen’ and max’s outfit is more basic, given the fact the texts imply she was sort of spacing her own costume … she’s just a yellowjacket, a teenager, so they both look something like this ( with modifications of course, they made these outfits from scratch ) :

i’ve always found the antler queen’s design to be rather mesmerizing in terms of how haunting it is, so i think safi’s arts-and-crafts project for it would definitely show up vinh at the party. it’s not just the costume either -- it’s the energy she’ll carry while wearing it. and if there’s one thing safi is so good at, it’s silently commanding attention without much effort and maintaining an aura of mystery. point is : she’ll kill it. max’s is more low effort ( it’s just the jacket you see in the second picture, and her project doesn’t even look nearly as good, i’m afraid ) but being attached at safi’s hip helps! i could go on and on about why i’ve picked these outfits for them, though i’ll shut my trap for now because the fic touches upon it lightly … but if you’ve seen the show, you probably have an inkling as to why they’re wearing what they are, and why this show would be so up safi’s alley. vinh lang stands no chance!

but as for how vinh and max interacted during that night, i sadly doubt they brushed shoulders much solo. safi and max showed up together in matching costumes and i’m sure they hardly left each other’s side the whole time, what with max being such a loner initially ( she didn’t even hang out with moses one-on-one back then ) and safi being obsessed in turn … they likely existed in their own bubble and anyone who talked to one basically talked to them both. vinh would likely be jealous of this, given his admission of such feelings to max in spin when he confessed that safi would talk about max ‘all the time’, so this is a similar situation : where vinh wants safi’s attention and time desperately, but she is eagerly orbiting around the new blood instead. very complicated! this is also a vinh who is posturing still in many ways and is stupidly jealous, meaning that there wouldn’t be much going on between him and max besides some catty pettiness on vinh’s part, and total obliviousness on max’s. he likely would avoid her if possible back then, despite his own conflicting feelings about everything surrounding her -- since i do firmly believe vinh was always attracted to max in ways he couldn’t quite explain, outside of a vague ‘we could hook up’ feeling. which makes being jealous of her more complicated than it should be. for all his sleuthing and bitter stewing, i don’t think he could ever properly hate her, so instead it’s an odd game of sore looks and snide remarks. they knew of each other ( vinh knew more about max than she knew of him, given safi’s rambling ), perhaps talked in passing, and max clearly saw vinh enough in her day-to-day to have his photo on her photo wall … but their beginnings were still curt and bittersweet. it’s important to remember that!

"Oh, just how irresistible you find me" Buck pats Eddie's chest playfully before he traces a fingertip up to Eddie's nipple, giving it a light pinch. Eddie hisses lowly and raises a brow as he watches the younger man, clearly amused with himself and he can't help but to say, "yet you're so incredibly annoying at the same time".

"I'm still angry at you for leaving, you know" Buck says, feeling his entire demeanor faltering when Eddie looks back at him with those deep, brown eyes and he notices the slight lines around them, which only furthers how much that they have missed out on with each other. "I know. And I'm sorry" Eddie says, a vague smile spreading across his face and his eyes almost instinctively dart down to Buck's lips, looking as soft and kissable as ever. Buck notices it too and he can feel all the anger and disappointment welling up in him again and he knows that it isn't fair, it isn't fair that Eddie still feels the need to hide who he is and it isn't fair that he can't do anything about it.

hiii! i absolutely love ‘things we don’t say’ i haven’t read such a nice fanfic in a while. i also want to know if we get more on jk and maya in the future? i’m so interested in their dynamic and also wondering if we might get jealous jk? since it’s been mostly maya not liking him being around girls sm. i absolutely love the story so far and i’m really excited for part 5!💓

ahhhh i love this ask! jk and maya are two of my favorite characters to write so you can be sure there will be more of them in the future. i don't think their plot will be fully wrapped up during the main storyline, but i have several future drabbles planned that i intend to keep weaving their story into! i've even been thinking about giving them their own drabble/oneshot because i love them so much.

Finally listed to Rebel Robin (the Audio show, not the book) and honestly it was not what I was expecting, I guess more in-line with the actual Stranger Things tv show. But of course that wouldn’t make sense.

Anyways, when listening to it I honestly find it really poetic, I don’t know if the subjects it tackles relates to the current climate but I find it now more important than ever.

One question I have is how do you direct Actors (those who act on screen or a visual medium) to perform for audio?

OH HI I CAN FINALLY ANSWER THIS QUESTION I'M SO EXCITED

(the SAG strike is over!! while podcasts were never struck work, bc Surviving Hawkins is a Netflix/Stranger Things show, I was considering anything related to it to be struck, so haven't wanted to post or promote it in any way! but we're finally done!)

I'm really glad you listened to the show and that it surprised you and felt relevant - it was a careful balance of making the show feel like it fits into the ST universe while also understanding that it takes place well before Robin knows anything about the Upside Down, so the story is going to be very different from any other ST story.

in terms of directing screen actors in audio...so many of the principles are the same! most of the actors I work with are TV/film actors not voiceover artists (though of course screen actors do VO and VO actors do screen, there are differences when it comes to those career paths).

(this got so long, putting it under the cut)

the thing that is hardest about screen acting in my opinion is the fact that you have to hold a million details/tasks in your head at once while also acting. stage acting is similar - you have to remember your blocking, make sure to project and be turned out to the audience, etc., but usually when you're acting on stage, you're doing the same show over and over again. for film - and especially TV - actors every day brings new scenes, new blocking, new physical actions. you have to hit your mark exactly, make sure you're in your light, find your eyeline, work with props, and memorize lines that you've sometimes been given that day. and then you have to make sure to give an emotional performance on top of that.

plus, in a show like ST, you're often interacting with things that are not there (every time I watch the demobat fight in the most recent season I'm so curious how they did it/what was providing the tension for them to pull on the bats, hit them, etc.). a lot of the actors I work with come from genre stuff, where a lot of their work is imagining that the green box they're in is actually a spaceship and the green stick they're holding is actually a magical staff or whatever. which adds another layer to the work.

which is all to say--audio is the opposite of that. you don't memorize your lines, you just have to make sure you're speaking into the mic, and that's it. but you also are only using your imagination to conjure up the setting and the actions your character is taking. so a lot of my work as a director is making sure the actors feel free to experiment, make mistakes, and be physical, even if we can't see it. oftentimes, a screen actor will come into a recording feeling like they have to do a particular thing, treat voiceover differently. my job is often just to remind them to treat it like anything else.

pretty much every actor I've ever worked with has commented on just how fun it is to focus on only the acting and nothing else. there's of course so much fun to be had running around and fighting monsters, but I find that voice acting provides a nice bit of variety. with Maya - and with the nature of the SH scripts - it was just about creating an atmosphere that felt conducive to natural conversation. because of ST filming scheduling, we actually didn't get to record her and Sean together at all, which was a bummer, but we still had someone reading the other characters' lines so it would feel like two people having a conversation.

in terms of specific direction, I'm usually focused on finding different shades of emotion from take to take - let's do this one angrier, let's do this one where you're scared and trying not to show it, etc. the only time I ever really have to voice direct is if something is getting mumbled or mispronounced or if I need something physical - the character running, smiling, etc. in those instances, I'll just tell the actor exactly what I need and we'll just pick up that individual line.

I hope this answers your question! especially since I wrote such a massive answer, lol. but the long and short of it is that directing is the same across mediums in many ways: you're focused on story, emotion, and chemistry and the lovely thing about podcasts is that you get to focus on those things and those things alone.

I can’t remember the exact wording of poems I wrote entire papers on, but I can still recite the entirety of Shel Silverstein’s “The Nap Taker” by heart.
