i do not know what Form implies since it is noncanonical, but Doom is about endings, destruction, and the necessity of acceptance! there can be depression or apathy, but endings aren't always bad things. the ending of a tortuous time loop, the satisfying conclusion to a game, the grand finale of an album. leaving awful situations, the end of bad times, sunsets of brutally hot days, the cooling reprieve of night. if things don't end, when will you finally get to rest and process things? the Death card in tarot, essentially: the transition after major upheaval. resting in that dark space after a big change before you begin life again. letting things be as they may, knowing endings must happen, a real "it be like that sometimes" aspect. Memento mori, remember death, and let that make life worthwhile!!

(Life is its opposite aspect, of beginnings, energy, and growth.)

Knights are literally my favorite class (<- this is probably not surprising!! but also i posit there is no bad knight in homestuck, that being Dave, Karkat and Latula.) Knights of Doom can protect doom, allowing people or yourselves to grieve without needing to push straight into the healing process, to rest after a long ordeal. Or to protect using doom, guarding against toxic positivity with needed pragmatism, and allowing things to end as they need to. Or, y'know. Protector using Doom for real, i.e. "You want me to kill that guy for you?"

Knights also often hide behind a facade, sometimes having to do with their aspect. Karkat, for example, hides behind his "ANGRY SHOUTY FUCKASS I HATE EVERYONE" persona, when he actually really cares about his team and friends (<- Knight of Blood). Knights of Doom might put on a facade of some kind to hide the feelings of doom inside.

if yall are Mages, we can be mages together!! :D Mages do NOT get much explanation, but i have personal speculation :3 if yall are Mages of Doom that makes yall Sollux's classpect! Mages gain and keep knowledge of their aspect through experience of/"suffering through" their aspect personally. If yall experienced depression, destruction, and/or upheaval in your lives, this would be fitting. Mages often keep their experiences to themselves, as opposed to their counter class, Seers, who often share this information. (Seers are like teachers sharing knowledge, Mages are like students taking knowledge in!)

They also carry the need to balance between too much and too little of their aspect, using their experiences to know when to shift balance. Mages of Doom would experience too much doom at some points in their lives, and very little doom during others. the cycle of life, doom, then rebirth, and knowing this balancing act intrinsically.

(Personally as a Mage myself, I have to balance between my aspect of Breath [distance, isolation, freedom] and its opposite, Blood [relationships, connections, dependency]. however, im not always the healthiest about these things and can often veer too far into either one!) if yall are Mages, yall might also strive to find balance between Doom (endings, destruction, acceptance) and Life (beginnings, growth, change)! the hibernation of winter to prepare for the new spring, to grow and wither and grow back stronger, to live and die and live again.

god yesterday i was so excited and motivated to play toontown and this update is pretty awesome, i love the new animations and the new cogs but most of it is basically ONLY a new coat of paint and theres nothing new to do, aside from beating up some of the new cogs to get them added to my cog schticker book. so i kinda lose motivation about it really, REALLY quickly.

i am already dismotivated and tired in general today, i got better sleep than last night and i dont know how i even functioned yesterday. so my lack of motivation and my shift of focus of Want To Play Other Game Despite Hyperfixation (minecraft and stardew valley on my 'wanna play at least a bit today' itches) is explained this way

but man. without friends i don't feel like checking most of i out - and a lot of my friends from my club already did so, without me, while i was asleep because of timezones.

so i dunno. i still gotta digest this update more, but realizing it added basically no new gameplay dismotivates me greatly. it was needed especially with some quality of life things like better tasks for clubs, emoting in a cog suit, cleaner animations (and quicker animations, too).

but holy hell there's nothing *new* to do the novelty will die off very quickly. it's just an april toons wait for me again. good update in terms of quality, i'd say.

so you know when you have a new hyperfixation and suddenly forget how to do or think about anything else? yeah ok so anyway it occurred to me that homestuck was popular right around the time when people were making "this is war" amvs for every fandom under the sun so i went to go check just for fun.

...three videos featuring Eridan as “the pariah” later i started making a spreadsheet.

the initial corpus.

i found a total of 26 homestuck "this is war" videos on youtube. of these, 3 are adaptations of the same comic; 5 are disqualified bc they don't appear to be assigning specific characters to the lines; and one wasn't actually an AMV. (disqualified videos are marked with an asterisk in the spreadsheet above).

of the remaining 18, 2 switch to using a full animation (not synched to match specific characters to lines) for only the third list of archetypes; 2 others skew my sample set a little due to being specifically dedicated to the ancestors and/or guardians.

“The Soldier"

there's not really an overwhelming preference for one person, but Dave and Equius show up frequently (4x each). "soldier" Equius is always paired with "civilian" Nepeta, which is very cute I think.

in this and all other pie charts, “other” groups all characters who appear in that spot only one time in the corpus.

"The Civilian"

as mentioned above, Nepeta is a popular choice, especially paired with Equius. pretty varied otherwise. note skewing from one instance of the same shot of Dave being used for both Soldier and Civilian. there's also a shot used of all the troll kids together.

you may think that assigning this line would be easy, and it is! there are exactly two videos that don't use Karkat or The Signless as "the leader", and those two are: 1. John 2. the beginning of a full section (non-character-synced) devoted to Alpha Dave and Rose.

I genuinely don't understand why Eridan is so popular in this spot. The two occurrences of Sollux confuse me even more.

i was born and raised in tennessee! you’ll see me tag posts containing anything cowboy-ish with “tennessee tag” bc i think im hilarious personally. this is also the reason i listen to quite a bit of country (carrie underwood and miranda lambert are GOOD ok!!!) and its also why im such a big preds fan! 

my first ever hockey game was april 11th, 2004: the first preds home playoff game! i dont remember much from my childhood (as i dont remember anything before last week) but apparently i was an outgoing easily excited kiddo, and during games i would fall asleep as soon as the period ended and woke up as soon as the next one started. my grandfather works for the nhl! he is the nashville predators time keeper (dave/david peterson if any of yall have been to the games lol) and because of this i got to meet a lot of players as a child!

my favorite stories to tell about this are about the two players i was closest to, adam hall and chris mason. once, when adam was in either tampa or minnesota i was downstairs waiting for him and he was late for the bus, so he ran right by me. according to everyone who tells this story (since i cant remember) i saw this, stomped out of the room, and loudly yelled “adam hall! where is my hug!” a different story is when i was a kid i was terrified of goalie masks. when mr chris mason came to say hello i got scared and he apologized for scaring me. my response was “its okay mace! i know the mask keeps you from getting booboos!” (i was a Child OKAY) and some blackhawks players were nearby and they started chirping him abt that and i fuckin Yelled At Them. bc im Iconic apparently.

but my alltime favorite story is about paul kariya. apparently once at a player meet and greet i walked across the table to him and just started Talking To Him???? and he taught me what a fist bump was (he called it “knuckles” and i Loved Them) and i pestered my family and everyone i saw with it for awhile (i would constantly loudly proclaim “knuckles!!!” whenever i wanted a fistbump sksksk) and fun fact: i couldnt say kariya (i was really young ok) so i called him “paul kia!!!” so now i forever associate kariya w the pokemon palkia

i was lucky enough to grow up with a nhl official as a grandfather so i was close with a lot of players, but i was closest with nashville goalie chris mason! he is a genuinely fantastic man and i once travelled to st louis to see him after he got traded. (that ended up w st louis fans jokingly trying to keep me after i told them i was his lucky charm [they didnt believe me until they beat the canucks 8-1 sksksk])

after the 2015-16 season i fell out of hockey. there were bigger hyperfixations to deal w, the offseason was always a bad time for me and i ended up genuinely forgetting about hockey. wish i was joking. then my brother started talking about a boy he called his “ham son” and that’s how i found out about auston matthews. thanks to him i got back into hockey! it was around january 2017 and i fell back in love with the sport that practically raised me.

im still a preds fan to this day. although i like new teams now, something past me would HATE. in fact past me was one of those annoying “fuck puck bunnies >:( bandwagoners are FAKE FANS” ppl, but thanks to tumblr ive learned to love too many teams to count. in fact thanks to a certain finn (aho) im actually conflicted on my favorite team these days, i mean im literally going to raleigh for thanksgiving so i can see the canes play the devils and the leafs!!

Queer Narratives

Before we begin, here is a brief history on same-sex rights in Canada: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/timeline-same-sex-rights-in-canada-1.1147516

Like the narratives of gender, the dominant queer narrative used to be that heterosexual was ideal or correct and anything else was seen as “deviance.” While this is still a dominant narrative, it is one that is being heavily contested right now. Instead, I want to focus on a sub-narrative of sorts.

The harmful narratives I want to focus on are the following: 1) that queer relationships are all about sex and 2) that being queer is tragic/deviant (similar to the third narrative of disability).

The idea that queer relationships are all about sex stems from the idea of deviance. The perceived difference between, say, a male + female couple versus a female + female couple, is the sex. A girl is a lesbian because she prefers women over men. Thus, this is perceived very literally as preferring vagina over penis. Because of this, people often become hyperfixated on this distinction and gay couples become hypersexualised. Not to mention that between the AIDS crisis and people historically being arrested for having sex with someone of the same gender, the media has always focused heavily in the past on the “lifestyle” of queer people with an emphasis on social and sexual deviance. To have a kids tv show with a mlm couple is frowned upon because the relationship is “explicit/dirty” or “not suited for kids” or because how am I supposed to explain that to my kids? They’re too young to know about sex!!! Where a straight couple is about love between two people, a queer couple is seen as only about sex. Other narratives stem from this idea too, such as the concept that a bisexual/pansexual person will sleep with anyone because they like both or the idea that a bisexual/pansexual person will cheat on their partner for someone of the opposite gender because they are attracted to both.

An example of this that comes to mind is Cousin Terry from Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates. I watched this movie a couple weeks ago and was absolutely cringing at how overly-sexualized Terry was. She is a bisexual character who spends the entire movie hitting on anyone who breathes, making jokes that “everyone has chlamydia,” and, at one point, pressuring another female character into sex by bribing her with Rihanna tickets in a predatory manner. A (quite explicit) example of this sexualization is in the clip below:

This idea that queer people are overly sexual is incorrect and inherently problematic. I constantly see things like a little five year old girl and boy holding hands and adults commenting on how their child has a boyfriend/girlfriend or that they’re going to get married someday. It certainly happened to me and my childhood best guy friend as we grew up. However, the idea of a little boy liking a little boy is considered wrong and seen as sexualizing children. How is it that a girl and boy holding hands is cute and loving, while two little boys is wrong? It’s because gay culture is inherently sexualized by the media to the point that being gay is intrinsically tied to sex.

The second narrative is that being gay is a tragedy - that to be gay is to suffer and not have a happy ending. This idea is promoted by the sheer number of queer characters that are killed off on TV and in film. Queer characters may be getting (slightly) more roles in the media than before, but more often than not the character dies, is heavily discriminated against, or otherwise has an unhappy ending to their story. It’s time to #ChangeTheNarrative to show that queer relationships can be just as loving, complex, secure, and “pure” as straight relationships. But how can it be done?

One important way to change this narrative is to increase the positive lgbtqia+ representation in the media. As the above articles stated, queer representation in the media has increased. The problem is, that representation often perpetuates the above two narratives and is thus problematic and not real representation.

A great example of positive lgbtqia+ representation is the new movie Love, Simon directed by Greg Berlanti:

This movie, despite having some heavy moments, is a feel-good, gay highschool romance with an absolutely happy ending. This is a movie that not only shows gay children (and adults) that queer people can have happy, sappy, sweet romances, but also shows straight people the exact same thing.

Other examples of positive representation include Magnus and Alec (mlm) in Shadowhunters (as well as Raphael Santiago as Ace rep!), Grace and Anissa (wlw) in Black Lightning, Modern Family’s Mitchell and Cam (mlm), Rosa Diaz (Bi) and Raymond Holt (Gay) in Brooklyn 99 for TV shows. New movies include Moonlight, “San Junipero” (from Black Mirror), and Star Trek Beyond, among others.

If there was more positive representation of queer relationships and identities in the media (especially of identities that are less represented like queer poc, bi/pansexual, aro/ace, and trans/non-binary) the idea of queer relationships as loving and supportive rather than “deviant” would become more mainstream.

It’s time to #ChangeTheNarrative by giving lgbtqia+ people the positive representation they deserve!
