PATRONUS If Ellie were to attempt to cast a patronus she likely wouldn’t manage to cast a incorporeal one, however if she were to produce a corporeal partronus it would take the form of a horse.
The horse represents freedom, and this is displayed in many forms. It first signals a free spirit, and someone ready to explore and feel alive. Individuals with this patronus are passionate, and though that may be so, they at times may be limited in some way, and therefore their spirit is more ready to run through the fields since they cannot. The nature of the horse is also represented in these people because they do not limit themselves to the conforms of society, but rather feel they have their own path, their own destiny, and they have control over how they get there. They are strong-hearted and magnificent at best. The most common house for this patronus is Hufflepuff. The most common signs are Aquarius and Aries. source
BOGGART Most of Ellie’s fears are concepts that are hard if not impossible for a bogart to assume the form of but there is one that has an easy physical representation, Ellie is terrified of bats. Upon casting a riddikulus charm the cloud of bats changes into black satin ribbons falling through the air.
WAND Applewood, fairy wings w. unicorn hair, 11", wishy. Ellie, along with the rest of her siblings, got her wand in France.
APPLEWOOD Applewood wands are not made in great numbers. They are powerful and best suited to an owner of high aims and ideals, as this wood mixes poorly with Dark magic. It is said that the possessor of an apple wand will be well-loved and long-lived, and I have often noticed that customers of great personal charm find their perfect match in an applewood wand. An unusual ability to converse with other magical beings in their native tongues is often found among apple wand owners, who include the celebrated author of Merpeople: A Comprehensive Guide to Their Language and Customs, Dylan Marwood.
FAIRY WINGS This core makes for a light, airy wand, and is the absolute best for Charms. They also signify a connection to the mystic, so these wands, despite their relative rarity, are used by nearly half of known witches and wizards with the Sight. Despite their astounding strength in Charms, they are merely average in Defense Against the Dark Arts and Transfiguration, and will often fail at hexes altogether. As such, they’re not commonly found in Slytherin House, but are common in Hufflepuff. Ravenclaws and Gryffindors may be drawn to this core, although they tend to react better to blends of fairy wings and unicorn hair.
UNICORN HAIR Unicorn hair generally produces the most consistent magic, and is least subject to fluctuations and blockages. Wands with unicorn cores are generally the most difficult to turn to the Dark Arts. They are the most faithful of all wands, and usually remain strongly attached to their first owner, irrespective of whether he or she was an accomplished witch or wizard. Minor disadvantages of unicorn hair are that they do not make the most powerful wands (although the wand wood may compensate) and that they are prone to melancholy if seriously mishandled, meaning that the hair may 'die' and need replacing.

ZODIAC Aries
aries is passion, fire in their veins, endless energy. they want to live forever and just experience everything, passionate about life and love and anything that holds their interest. they want to be the best at everything. they’re icarus flying too close to the sun, achilles and his power and his immortality. they’re loud and wild and they want the world, to live with childish excitement. their anger, though, is unpredictable and terrifying, like a volcano or a dragon that leave nothing behind their fury.

SORTING A hatstall is a sorting that lasts more than five minutes, Ellie’s sorting was five minutes ten seconds. A hatstall between Ravenclaw and Gryffindor (although slytherin was an early possibility), it was her insatiable curiosity that won out over the bold and brash actions that she would take to find out answers.

bio
born to henri allaire and his second wife, desdemona mulciber, ellie is the youngest of seven.
far from a treasured child she was instead seen as a nuisance. the sixth daughter in a family that lost patience after the second, here was another daughter to marry off, another burden not a potential heir. amplified more than it was for her sisters by her twin being the elusive and long awaited heir to the allaire fortune.
the allaire’s are a wealthy french pureblood family. originating from île de batz in brittany, they rose to prominence in french wizarding politics with thirteen ministers of magic being an allaire and many more claiming wives or mothers holding the name. two terms ago her grand-père stepped down after a quarter of a century as minster and just last year her uncle léopold became minister.
already sidelined by her family, and the pureblood society her father favoured, for her sex, she struggled even for recognition from her parents, she wasn’t one of the treasured three daughters of a wife oh so suddenly taken by dragon pox. she did not posses the quiet manners and meek tones of her eldest sister, milène. nor did the airs of a french pureblood lady come automatically, sneer and all, as they did to lucrèce. and of course she wasn’t the long awaited heir, pride, and joy that her twin éric was.
her father met her mother, desdemona mulciber when he worked in britain for a few years as an aide to his uncle, the french wizarding ambassador at the time, but returned to france not long after the wedding.
ellie an her siblings grew up in france in the allaire’s ancestral home on île de batz only moving to the uk when she was ten when her father was made ambasador.
she carved out her own place almost by accident, learning fast the only way she was noticed was if she caused an issue. her mother and father had no time for subtlety, if she felt something she had to proclaim it, if she wanted something she had to demand it, if believed something she had to argue it.
hcs
trigger warning parental abuse
Ellie tried so hard to keep her O.W.L. choices a secret, she truly did. Its not that she didn’t want to anger her parents, that was never the issue, she did that just by existing. It’s just she’d never have done anything that would infuriate them so. She lasted all of summer, a summer of lying, a summer of pretending, saying it just was arithmancy and runes. Just that. Never mentioning the third one. She got to school thinking she’d escaped their wrath, delaying it till fifth year. Unbeknown to her, her elder sister Lucrèce had written a letter to her parents, a week after hallowe’en, and they’d spent two months seething. As soon as she got home from christmas she was hit by a wave of blinding, white hot rage. That holiday marked the first her parents had used an unforgivable curse on her, but it didn’t work. They tried to get her to drop it but they only made her buckle down. She got a outstanding in muggle studies and the scars from their anger are still healing.
end trigger warning
She’s a very volatile person, quick to anger and long to calm down holding grudges for years.
Her parents are both supporters of Voldermort, her mother is a death eater, dark mark and all, but her father only agrees with his ideology. Even with the views in wizarding France, it’s bad optics for their ambassador to get involved with UK wizarding politics, but he lets her wife have her hobbies.
She used to be a big hopeless romantic, in someways she still is, but it’s a part of herself she’s tried to kill off in recent years. When her first serious relationship ended badly (wc!) she pinned most of the blame on him, but felt that the reason she felt the break up so badly was because of her romanticism and so has tried to cut that part of herself out.
She’s always been fascinated with the muggle world, stemming mainly from her close relationship with her disowned Uncle Matthieu. He was disowned for marrying a half-veela who was also the daughter of a muggleborn Brigitte Bonaccord (now a famous model in the muggle world). She spends as many summers as she can in muggle Paris instead of her family home on Île de Batz.
More to be added.
connections
her twin brother
her older sister
her betrothed/messy ex
her crush
friends
Ellie is a fairly outgoing person, she sets out to make friends first rather than enemies, even with her personal convictions her friends tend to be her blindspot. She’s also friends with quite a varied mix of people.
enemies
Despite that Ellie tends towards rather snap judgements on those she’s not already friends with especially if her friends paint them in a certain light. She also tends to be very vocal in her dislike of people.
grudges
It doesn’t have to be anything big, they might not even know they’ve done something grudge worthy but Ellie would.
past hookups/regular hookups
In the wake of her break up she’s mostly tried to keep things casual. She’s bi so this could be guys and girls.
people she tried dating
Even though she mostly tried to keep things casual, she did try dating a few times... with varying success. Usually ending badly on Ellie’s end.

Angsana Velavaru - the Maldives island masquerading as a Steinway
A piano is a bit like a car. You can spend one hundred thousand hard to counterfeit pieces of paper on a Rolls Royce or a Steinway grand piano, or you can spend one thousand on an old Chappell upright or Nissan Sunny. Both should do the job, but both offer the user a very different experience. Holidaying in the Maldives is the same, with the difference that you can usually test drive the car or piano before you give away your hard earned cash. A holiday is a leap of faith, trusting in the myriad of reviews on Trip Advisor and online photos. So after much debate in the Emery household, we decided Angsana Velavaru was the chosen one.
I’ve been to the Maldives three times in the past eight years, and each time I needed something different. The first time I was a Maldives virgin, so I didn’t know what I wanted. The second time I’m told by Mrs E that we were on a ‘Baby Moon’ (and if you don’t know what that is, nor do I…), and this time was our much-needed family holiday with three-year-old Master T.
Most peoples reaction when I mention a toddler visiting this set of 100-or-so islands in the Indian Ocean is ‘what about all that water, isn’t it dangerous?’, ‘there is nothing to do, you’ll all be bored!’ or ‘isn’t the journey to long?’ Yes, the journey is long from London’s ever-glamorous Gatwick airport, but the other two points are just stupid. I’ve yet to meet a toddler who is silly enough to wade into the sea of their own accord and keep walking until their parents finally notice and scream. As for boredom, imagine a place with no cars to be careful of, actually no vehicles whatsoever - so your little one can roam as free as a bird, safe and relaxed. A place where wild Stingrays visit for a little food once in a while. A place where you can walk from your villa, outside in the sand and heat, to breakfast, lunch and dinner, knowing you don’t need to keep quiet in any corridors. A beach which is so empty you don’t need to send a flair to find little Jonny amongst the thousand other sun-tanners. Yes, if you find the right island, the Maldives is the perfect family holiday. My only issue was that Angsana Velavaru was far less than perfect.
A two-week stay (excluding flights) in a Deluxe Beachfront Pool Villa at this five-star resort will set you back around $16,000 (USD). You could own a whole fleet of the wonderful Nissan Sunny for that amount. And sometimes, unfortunately, it felt a similar standard. It was usual for the public washrooms to have no hand towels. The minibar was restocked with the same regularity of the trains in the UK, and the same goes for the toiletries in the villa. You go into a bar or restaurant, and for some reason, the staff only ever gave me a menu; either it seems that a man should order for his wife, or they have not printed enough menus - neither of which are good reasons, especially as we are not in the 19th century. Talking about the bars, you go in as a family, order a bottle of water, and for some reason which I just cannot figure out, the staff never, ever provided Master T with a glass to drink from; and if you order a cocktail expect it to arrive anywhere between 5 and 20 minutes, again a bit like our trains. If you booked an activity, it’s not unusual for the real time of the activity to differ from the one advertised. Book a table in the over-water restaurant Azzurro, and although the food is absolutely delicious, your toddler will have to eat sitting on your lap, as they have a rarity of high-chairs. And be careful, although I’m not anti-smoking, there are no dedicated areas for smokers to enjoy themselves without inflicting their habit onto others; even in the restaurant whilst you’re eating with a three-year-old at your table.
If you are a keen snorkeler like I am, I’d advise you to find another island unless you’re happy to take a daily boat trip; admittedly this isn’t the fault of the resort, but the coral around the island was particularly affected by the bleaching of 2016 and as a result, it looks a little more like an underwater graveyard than a bustin’-with-wildlife underwater oasis. And although the island is nicknamed ‘Turtle Island’ - don’t let this fool you; none of the staff have ever seen a turtle actually nest on the island.
And then there’s the Chinese. Now, I have nothing against one of the most successful races on earth; but as this is an Asian company, and the island is heavily marketed to the Chinese, there are a lot of them on the island. Again, not an issue. But remember the Chinese are culturally different to Westerners. On the first dinner, a waiter apologised to me because of the one set of cutlery laid out, instead of a starter, main, dessert etc. He said, “it’s what the Chinese prefer so that’s what we do”. And if you make the mistake of asking a Chinese member of staff, like I did, for some sugar to sweeten me and my coffee cup, you’ll be given an ashtray.
You may think this illustrious list of bad service means I wouldn’t recommend Angsana, and that I was permanently in the bad books of Mrs E and Master T for choosing this resort, and you’d be totally wrong. We had a fabulous time. The island is stunning, one of the most beautiful places in the world; and the grounds-staff work hard to keep it that way. Despite the service in the restaurant on the water, the service in the buffet restaurant was wonderful (and a name drop to Hathim for that), and the food at both locations was superb. The variety of activities offered were wide and at a reasonable price. The cleanliness of the whole island, something so basic but so important, was flawless, and the accommodation of the 207 sqm Deluxe Beachfront Pool is great; with a garden and pool so private you can sunbathe all day with your tackle out, and no one will attempt to use it for fishing.
As for the free kids club (check the age eligibility; we were told in advance it was three and up, and got to the island to be told four and up!), I have a mixed feeling. It should have been a child’s paradise playground; with the leaflet offering ‘Movie Time’, ‘Story Time’, ‘Sea Life Discovery’, ‘Kiddies Aerobics’, ‘Sand Sculpture Building’, ‘Treasure Hunts’, and even ‘Mini Olympic Games’; sadly none of these things happened. Having said that, the lady who runs this, Tini, has been there many years and Master T liked her very much and did ask to visit quite regularly; so she must have done something right!
"If you want to book this hotel, my advice is to book directly with the resort and contact their reservations manager. The staff are usually happy to match prices and can tailor your package much more; and feel free to mention my name and I'm sure they'll work hard to provide you with extras..." -- RDCE
Within a week of being on the island, we noticed some big changes happen. Full cutlery services started to appear at dinner. Mrs E was given a menu, and Master T a water glass. Drinks arrived within the time it took me to learn the spelling of Angsana Velavaru, and the activities board has new, accurate timings. Something miraculous was happening, and now I know how they felt on the 25th December in the year naught. New management had been installed, and a new General Manager had been on the job for three days and was already turning things around. This island had been unloved for too long, and now it was like the baby Jesus being born; excitement was in the air and people started to follow their new leader.
I’d easily place a bet that if I’m invited back to visit nine months from now, all of the above will be history, and the elements that’ll shine will be the beauty of the island. The feeling of being looked after and receiving great service won’t be noticed, because it’ll just be there as standard - from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave; like driving a Roller, or playing a Steinway; like all five-star experiences in life should be.

Brexit: Smooth start to border operations is 'calm before the storm'
The smooth start to post-Brexit border operations may be the “calm before the storm”, industry bosses have warned.
The first day of January marked the first day of a new trading relationship between the UK and the EU.
There had been fears it would create chaotic scenes at ports, with outbound lorries now subject to new customs checks but the new era arrived without disruption.
The Stena Line ferry and port group, however, has said it is too early to draw conclusions, as the bank holiday meant border traffic was unusually low.

Dover quiet after end of Brexit
“This is the quietest time of the year,” Ian Davies, the company’s head of UK ports, told Sky News.
“The true test will come when the volume starts to build.”
The Welsh port of Holyhead normally sees around 9,000 freight units a week but in the run-up to Christmas it was processing 12,500 – a combination of festive stockpiling and a rush by hauliers to beat the Brexit deadline.
“A tremendous amount has been stockpiled on both sides. And that is in industry now. That will take a while to seep back into the system. So we think January, generally, will be a quiet month anyway,” Mr Davies said.

What will be the economic impact of Brexit?
The government has warned there will be some disruption to border traffic as firms get to grips with the changes.
All freight leaving the UK for the EU must now be accompanied by a customs declaration form.
On Friday evening, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps tweeted that “hundreds” of lorries had crossed the channel with a “very small” number turned back.
Border traffic low due to bank holiday, but good to see no disruption in Kent on Day One with hundreds of lorries crossing Channel. Turnback numbers v. small. REMINDER: Hauliers must now carry export docs 📃 & get #COVID-19 test BEFORE heading to Kent: https://t.co/CU3Fj3sXwM
— Rt Hon Grant Shapps MP (@grantshapps) January 1, 2021
Six freight loads hoping to travel from Holyhead to Ireland were rejected for not having the correct paperwork, according to Stena Line.
“Hopefully by February it will return to business as usual,” said Charles Hogg, commercial director at Unsworth Global Logistics, a UK-based customs clearance broker.
“However, a lot of these unprepared importers will get fines, they will get extra truck waiting time and have a lot of additional costs.”

What's boxing day and how is it celebrated?
Individuals might also have observed that during international locations like the u. K. And canada, they get the day after christmas off. Of direction, to them it is referred to as extra than simply the day after christmas or dec. 26; it is boxing day! Boxing day is a vacation that dates lower back centuries, and but living in a rustic that does not have fun it, we nonetheless won't understand what it is all approximately. So, what's boxing day? Why is it named that, and how do humans in different nations rejoice it? There's in reality a few solutions to all of those questions. What is boxing day? Boxing day is an legit public excursion (or financial institution excursion) on dec. 26 celebrated by way of the uk and other commonwealth nations. This includes canada, australia, new zealand and south africa. On a bank holiday, the staff gets the time off. If boxing day falls on a saturday or sunday, generally the subsequent monday is recognized as a holiday with the day without work. In some eu nations - netherlands, germany and poland amongst them - dec. 26 is referred to as a 2d christmas day, also diagnosed as a felony holiday. Similarly, dec. 26 is also recognized to a few countries (like ireland and select components of spain) as saint stephen's day, a christian day of commemoration for saint stephen, who is diagnosed as being the primary christian martyr. Why is it known as boxing day? There's no person showed beginning concerning the etymology of the term boxing day. However there are several theories and capacity foundation stories which can cause the name, as well as dictate how the day has been celebrated within the beyond. Perhaps the most normally frequent explanation for the time period boxing day pertains to the word "christmas field." the concept of a christmas field dates returned to the olden days of british aristocracy, as they had been said to provide their servants dec. 26 off and deliver them some kind of gift, in any other case known as a christmas container. This box could also consist of cash and even food from the previous day's christmas dinner. Those may additionally were given to servants or to employees from their employers. A extraordinary clarification involves a specific type of christmas box, this one for charitable functions rather than presents for personnel. Containers would be open in a church for the season as much as christmas day wherein churchgoers could put monetary donations supposed for the less fortunate. Then on dec. 26, no longer so coincidentally a day the church already celebrated for the first christian martyr, participants of the clergy might then go around gifting the money in the field to the terrible. No matter which of these can be authentic, boxing day seems constructed on present-giving and charity possibly even before it first have become diagnosed as a bank holiday (1871 in england). How is boxing day celebrated? A few may also nonetheless celebrate boxing day by means of giving to the much less fortunate, but the excursion has accelerated and been commodified in a number of distinct approaches. Boxing day in many countries has end up an afternoon for doorbuster income, much like an american day with its personal potential etymologies: black friday. Boxing day has turn out to be such a income-heavy day for countries that commemorate it that a few stores now put it up for sale boxing week. With global black friday deals and monthlong vacation reductions leading up to christmas, specially on line, boxing day is simply one among many days with deals this time of 12 months. However in the u. Okay., australia and somewhere else, boxing day income are nevertheless a big deal and a way many residents spend their time without work. Boxing day may additionally resemble black friday in how people are willing to camp out for large income, but it could also resemble thanksgiving in one unique way: soccer! Just like how 3 national american football games hold the game on tv all day on thanksgiving, the u. Ok. Has soccer video games all day from the biggest leagues within the usa. On boxing day 2018, for example, there will be 9 most useful league video games being performed together with liverpool v. Newcastle and brighton v. Arsenal. On account that boxing day is the day after christmas, it's not unusual to make a meal of the leftovers. Greater than just reheating the meals, it is now not unheard of for families to make a buffet of them, or take the contents of the leftovers and flip them right into a pie. How different countries have a good time boxing day. No longer every united states of america that celebrates boxing day deviates an excessive amount of from the extra not unusual traditions. Canada, for example, would not appear to have many canada-specific factors to its boxing day. But some countries have or have had their personal traditions. The u. Okay. Has made looking something of a boxing day culture, however that has been stifled significantly because the hunting act of 2004 banned the act of the usage of puppies to seek for flora and fauna mammals. Prior to this, fox looking were a large boxing day lifestyle in the us of a. Given that that act, british hunters have changed fox searching with "path hunting," in which hunters comply with a path in preference to chasing actual animals. With an amazing majority of british citizens who prefer that lethal fox hunting live banned, it's not going there might be another alternate to this each time quickly. Where the u. Ok. Prefers to make football their choice of recreation on boxing day, australia is going in exceptional guidelines. This is essentially because of the fact that even as the u. Ok. Has all started their iciness just numerous days earlier than boxing day, australia is in its summer season. As such, the sports activities encompass cricket and, more precise to the warmer weather, yacht races. One substantially famous one is the sydney to hobart yacht race, which starts offevolved in sydney and is going to hobart in tasmania. This race has existed in australia considering that 1945. New zealand is some other us of a with warmer climate, giving citizens extra out of doors options for how to spend their day without work. Something they have in not unusual with the u. Okay. On the holiday is horse racing, along with at auckland racing membership. There are some differences to how international locations celebrate boxing day, but in the long run even the ones variations fall into large classes that they all share: sports activities, shopping and family.

The jet lag is gone now and so, for the most part, is the Tube cough that I picked up from the not so great air in the London Underground. It was a fast-paced, hectic, often tense ‘holiday.’ Nine days in England and Spain with my 16 year old son to see games. It’s becoming what we do but this one was pretty ambitious. I timed it so we could potentially see all four Champions League semi-finals with the potential to fill in many days with league games. We were never realistically going to see all four semi-final games but we didn’t know which, if any, we would see as we got onto the plane. That was the twist. Every other soccer trip I’ve done, I’ve left with tickets in hand for all the games we planned on seeing.
Chronologically, here’s how it went…
April 29 – Vancouver
This day actually began the night before when I tried to check in for our flight and got a strange message saying I couldn’t and would have to do so at the airport. I started wondering why that would be the case. I knew my passport was fine and I knew my son’s expired in June but had checked and the UK allowed entry as long as you had 30 days left on it after your planned return home. I looked further. Spain did not have the same rule. You needed three months. Shhhiiiittt.
Up early and off to the passport office. “It would really be up to the airline and immigration agent to let you onto the flight or into the country when you land. Can’t guarantee it but we have the ability to do a passport today for you. Just fill out these forms and get back here asap.” Had to boot out to UBC to get my wife to sign off on the passport application and then back downtown. Super helpful woman there then went through them all and got them set up for a quickie passport. Then she asked for Tavish’s current passport and saw that he was 16. “These are the wrong forms. These are for people under 16 years of age.” We looked at each other, her already thinking of a solution, me crestfallen, Tavish fully distraught. “We can do this though. Here’s the adult form, you can be the guarantor. Give me two references we can call and we’ll do our best.”
1.5 hours later we had a passport and were making our way to the airport, arriving in plenty of time. Government offices take a fair bit of flack but I was so impressed by the professionalism and willingness to go the extra mile of the staff there. When I left the pick up window with passport in hand I went back to the people who had made it happen and thanked them individually.
Practical tip: Check your passport before you leave and don’t make assumptions about how long it needs to be valid for.
April 30 – London
Trips like this take an unusual amount of planning. Spurs v Ajax at the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was on the day we arrived. We then had a flight to Spain that left the next day. We had arrived at Gatwick and were leaving for Barcelona through there as well. Our trains to and from Gatwick went through Victoria Station so we stayed walking distance from there in Pimlico.
We pushed through the jet lag, dropped our bags in our room and used our Tube day pass to full effect. Tavish knew where he wanted to go. This would be stores like Palace and Supreme in SoHo which because they are so cool are closed far more days than they are open. That was the case for Palace who apparently needed a few days to put their summer stock on shelves. Supreme though was open and had a line and a security guard outside. I let him do his thing and wandered around waiting for a text to let me know he was ready. The mythology around Supreme is mind-blowing if you’re not familiar with it. Tavish now has a pair of purple nylon Supreme pants that cost more than I have ever spent on a pair of pants. His money though so good for him getting something he says he can wear for a few months and then sell for more than he paid (this is a big thing for teens these days).
Game time loomed. We went back to the hotel. We’d got a text from the person who said he might be able to help us get tickets letting us know it wouldn’t be happening. We knew that one was a stretch. We looked online at viagogo.com. Prices starting at GBP 400. We tried Craigslist. One ad for a pair of tickets. GBP 300. Texted offering 300 for the pair. He agreed. Asked us to come to his hotel in Leicester Square. Queue Benny Hill music as get over there by tube, taxi and foot as quickly as we can only to discover it was some kid having a laugh at our expense. No tickets and time wasted. Headed to the stadium to see if we would have better luck.
Spoiler: we didn’t.
Prices held at GBP 400 per ticket even once the game was 15 minutes in and Ajax had already scored. More buyers than sellers and the guys selling were pros and not worried about time ticking by. Ended up being on the same tube back as one once we gave up and talked to the guy. Showed me all the events he was going to the next few months. Must have been more than twenty and they were all over the world. Young guy with several guys in his ‘crew’ working with him. Some scouts for police, some likely security given the money he must have had on him.
So a long 30 hours with nothing but stress and disappointment ended up with us going to bed but not before I went online and made the most extravagant purchase of my life: two tickets for the Barcelona v Liverpool game at the Camp Nou the next day. No way we were going there and not seeing that game. And given our flight got in about 2.5 hours before game time there really wasn’t time to source tickets once we got there.
Practicals:
The tube in London is awesome. It’s also packed most of the time but trains come every few minutes. Get a day pass. Way more economical than individual tickets and saves you having to buy tickets all the time. Gatwick is a surprisingly good airport. Security is staffed way more than Vancouver (we waited over 30 minutes in line when we left YVR; we were through the whole process in under ten minutes both times we flew out of Gatwick on this trip).
Buying tickets on Viagogo.com is not pleasant. I found it a deceptive site that didn’t list their fees clearly and did not make it as obvious as it should what currency you were dealing with. At the end as you pay all of a sudden you are paying in Polish Zloty as they are based in Poland. You’re looking for a professional, credible site that gives you confidence in the process when you’re dropping a lot of money in tickets. In the end, I got PDF’s of the tickets right away and there were no issues with them.
If you’re going to be moving around a lot on a trip like this put a priority on location for your hotel. Your early morning commute to airports and train stations doesn’t need to be complicated by adding 30-60 minutes to the trip because your hotel is nowhere near your departure point. The hotels we stayed in were picked for convenience of location more than anything else. They are not the places I would have booked if I was travelling with my wife. Amenities were irrelevant. We barely spent any time when we were awake in any of them. Comfy bed, decent ratings online and modest prices (the money was all going into tickets) were the criteria.
May 1 to 4: Barcelona
Flight mercifully was not delayed. Having just dropped a serious wad on tickets I was a prime candidate for ending up on the evening news if a flight delay was going to cause us to miss FCB v LFC at the Camp Nou. All good though. Picked up four day Metro passes at the airport, checked in to our hotel 400m from Camp Nou and joined the party. Tens of thousands of people all outside, on the streets, in adjacent parks. Loads of people selling cold Estrella beers on the streets for 2 Euros. Super festive. Got in soon after the gates opened an hour or so before kickoff. Front row of the top tier behind the goal (three tiers behind the goal, five on the main stand on the sideline). Fantastic view of the rest of the stadium and a great tactical view of the game.
View from our seats at Camp Nou for Barcelona vs Liverpool
By the time Messi scored his second on a stunning free kick to make it 3-0, we felt we had experienced what would be the high point of the trip. A crowd of over 98 000, two Messi goals right in front of us on a beautiful night in an iconic stadium. It was what I had talked about wanting the trip to be before we left: Exciting, meaningful games featuring the best players in the world playing in iconic stadiums in great cities. This would be hard to top.
The game was on a Wednesday night so we had two game-free days to see Barcelona before seeing Atletico Madrid playing Espanyol at the Estadi Cornellà-El Prat. That meant a return visit to Futbol Mania, an epic soccer store we’d been to five years earlier, for a needed pair of boots for Tavish and seeing some of the sights. He ended up with some newly released white Copas. If I’d had to convince him to get those instead of an eyeball searing pair of Nikes made of tinfoil and plutonium I’d have considered it a stalemate but he went with the leather Copas. So even though they’re not black that’s just good parenting plain and simple.
Futbol Mania in Barcelona (left) and Tavish with his new laceless, white adi Copas
It’s now much easier to buy tickets for La Liga games online than I remember it being in the past. They generally aren’t available until a week or two before the day the game is being played but you can buy them relatively simply. Getting the Espanyol tickets was no problem and the Metro got us to within a 15 minute walk of the stadium (Barcelona’s Metro is fantastic by the way. We never waited more than three minutes for one and they were always clean and much quieter than London’s).
Action from Espanyol v Atletico Madrid. Griezeman (left) not as popular here as he is in Madrid and France.
This game was a pleasant surprise. Well-designed stadium built ten years ago. Open concourses, great sight lines and tight to the pitch. The fans are unapologetic in their support for the city’s “other” team. We had joked that you never see people wearing Espanyol jerseys in Barcelona and it’s easier to find a Barca jersey there than a bottle of water but Espanyol fans look like they know how to have fun at games. Didn’t hurt that they ended up beating a listless Atleti side 3-0 but it was a really enjoyable game day experience for us and for everyone but the 50 or so Atleti fans who travelled to watch.
More from Espanyol v Atletico Madrid at the Estadi Cornellà-El Prat or RCDE Stadium in Barcelona
Had to race back to the hotel to pick up our bags and head to Barcelona Sants train station to get on the train to Madrid. The high speed trains in Spain are fantastic. It took three hours to get there on a very smooth train that hit 300km/h. Like the rest of Europe for the most part you leave and arrive from a central point in the city. Grabbed a cab, there must have been over fifty waiting to pick up people from our train and others outside the station, and got to our hotel around midnight.
Practicals:
Go see games where the home team is not a global brand. The supporter culture is very real and there were very few turistas like ourselves there. Same for Getafe v Girona below.
Even in May, Barcelona was packed with tourists.
May 5 – Madrid
We had tickets for the Getafe v Girona game in the south of Madrid and planned to go straight to the Bernabeu to see about tickets for that knowing that we had a flight that night back to London.
Getting to Getafe was frustrating. I allowed two hours and we still missed close to 30 minutes of the first half mainly due to our journey being interrupted by a closed section on the Metro that forced us above ground and onto a bus to a station that we weren’t planning on going through.
Getafe FC are a great story this year. Formed in 1983 (from the ashes of previous iterations of clubs that had operated there) they had risen from the bottom division and spent all but one of the last ten or so seasons in La Liga Santander (the top division in Spain). Now for the first time they were battling for fourth place and the last berth in Champions League for next season. Their opponents were also battling. They were fourth from the bottom though and trying to stave off relegation. So not exactly a UCL semi-final but still a highly relevant game.
On a beautiful, sunny Sunday morning in the 17000 seat Coliseum Alfonso Pérez, Getafe controlled play after an early goal (that we missed) and then notched a second soon after a Girona red card. The game tailed off after that and Getafe got three points nearer to playing Champions League soccer next season.
Getafe v Girona. One trying to get into Champions League for the first time; the other trying not to get relegated. And yeah, so much for thinking seats in the second row would be a good idea…
Getting to the Bernabeu from Getafe was much simpler than getting to the Getafe stadium. We joined the surprisingly long line for the ticket windows and had a scalper swing by within seconds. Chopped his 300 euro gambit for a pair of good tickets down to 150 very quickly and he escorted me to a nearby bank machine. Tough day for scalpers. Demand for Real tickets seems to have plummeted in light of their poor season and Villareal were not a big draw. The stadium was less than half full. Factor in that Ramos, Bale and Benzema didn’t even dress and the game didn’t have much lustre. That said, it ended up being full of attacking play with those who were playing, especially Marcelo, seeming very loose and wanting to put on a show. Final score was 3-2 Real.
Once again it was a race to get out of the stadium and into a cab to go pick up our bags and get to the airport. We spent 22 hours in Madrid but managed to see two games.
Practicals
Barajas Airport in Madrid is excellent in terms of layout, staffing and getting through security quickly
Getting tickets for both games (one in advance; one at the stadium from a scalper) was easy
We flew EasyJet back to Gatwick because it was one of the few flights we could do at that time of day back to London. First time flying it. They dinged me $110 for having a back pack in addition to my one carry-on suitcase. It was buried in the terms of the ticket. The cost of the actual ticket was right around $110. Buyer beware.
May 6 – London
Arrived at our hotel near Shoreditch, which has been in the news recently as an example of resistance to gentrification in London. Did another day walking around London sites before getting a fish n chips takeaway and getting to bed fairly early as we had an early bus to Liverpool waiting for us in the morning.
May 7 – Liverpool
As I alluded to, trains are the way to go for inter-city travel in Europe but the only trains we could take that would comfortably get us into Liverpool from London in time for the game were 6-8 times more expensive than the bus so we went with that. It was not enjoyable. Six hours getting to Liverpool with no stops (and no wifi).
This was the game we knew we had the best chance of getting some friend of a friend free tickets for. And after shelling out for tickets in Barcelona, I really wasn’t in a position to splash out again for the return leg. Problem is we wouldn’t know until sometime the day of the game. Finally got the text fours away from game time soon after we’d checked into our Air BnB (hotel prices in Liverpool the night of the game were outrageous). Our tickets were waiting for us. Met up with friend and friend of a friend for a couple of drinks and then jumped in 12 seater van for a two quid ride to Anfield. We were on a total high. The game could have been a nil-nil drabfest and we would have been okay with it. Just seeing those two teams again and being at Anfield for the first time, down low with the Kop looming to our left was enough.
Us and the Kop
But it would be much more than that.
No Salah, no Firmino. Down 3-0 from the first leg. There really wasn’t much reason for Liverpool to be optimistic, be it players or fans.
The combination of atmosphere and comeback in a game this big will likely be something I never experience again. To beat Barcelona 4-0 in a Champions League semi-final when you have to beat them 4-0 is extraordinary.
The Kop was not buying that narrative. Capacity is just over half of what was at Camp Nou. The noise, mainly from the Kop, was relentless. I’ve been to two World Cups, two Euros, EPL games and many other games in Europe, North America and Africa. This was the best in terms of atmosphere. And with each goal Liverpool scored it just intensified three fold. Not only were we spitting distance from the Kop, 14 rows up from the field, but we ended up being at the end where Liverpool scored their second, third and fourth goals. The combination of atmosphere and comeback in a game this big will likely be something I never experience again. To beat Barcelona 4-0 in a Champions League semi-final when you have to beat them 4-0 is extraordinary.
We soaked in some of the post-game celebrations on the way back to where we were staying but we were drained and had another bus ride back to London waiting for us in the morning. Our 18 hours in Liverpool had been well spent though.
Practicals:
Go see a game at Anfield. The bigger the game the better I’m sure but I asked guys behind us if it’s always like that and they said it’s always pretty close to what we saw and heard.
I don’t use AirBnB much but this one was almost a life saver. Great host and great location
May 8 – London
As mentioned at the outset, I booked our dates to allow for the possibility of seeing any and all of the semi-finals but with no line on tickets for the Spurs v Ajax game in Amsterdam and the only combo of flights from Manchester to Schiphol and back to Gatwick that would allow us to catch our return flight back to Vancouver clocking in at close to $900 for the two of us by the time a final decision had to be made, it was a no go.
Unable to access my DAZN account in the UK, I had to use a VPN and pay for the game on B/R Live (Bleacher Report). It was the best $3 I’ve spent in a long time. Just as people were recovering from the drama of the Liverpool comeback, Spurs decided to take it a step further. If you know of two games in the same competition, in any sport, that pulled off the same degree of drama that these two games did, let me know. I’d like to see that because Spurs scoring three in the second half away from home with no Harry Kane and the last one coming on the stroke of the five minutes of injury time being up was one-upmanship of the highest order; pure “Hold my beer Liverpool.” It left Tavish and I half shouting, half laughing at the laptop when Spurs scored the goal that makes the Champions League Final an all EPL affair.
VPN’s come in handy, just not for DAZN
Hotwire is generally great for booking rooms when you’re not fussy about too much but since you don’t know what you’re getting until after you book (to get the best deals) it can cause a problem if you need to be highly sensitive to location. I tried to get something close to London Bridge Station but ended up a 25 minute tube ride further away than what I thought we’d be. When you’re on your fourth or fifth day of being in a different city each day and getting ready to head home. I should just have splurged a bit and got a hotel much closer to where we had to be in the morning.
Train service to Gatwick is excellent and really no longer than taking the tube to and from Heathrow. There’s no advantage to buying these tickets online ahead of time though
We flew home the next morning. I’ve done a few of these dedicated soccer trips now starting with the World Cup in 2014 but for all previous ones I had tickets for all the games we planned to see in my hands before we left. For this one, of the six games we hoped to see, I only had tickets for two (Espanyol v Atleti and Getafe v Girona). We ended up seeing five as we couldn’t get in to Spurs v Ajax in London and that was enough numbers-wise and more than enough quality-wise. Tavish is not prone to hyperbole at all but his Instagram posts after the Camp Nou and Anfield games were “best two hours of my life” and “life changing” respectively. I’d have to agree with him. The two legs of the Liverpool-Barca tie will go down as being among the most memorable in Champions League history – and we saw both of them.
Planes, Trains and Tickets – 9 days seeing games in Europe The jet lag is gone now and so, for the most part, is the Tube cough that I picked up from the not so great air in the London Underground.

So – January is over.
As innocuous as it seemed at first, this turned out to be a completely fantastic but also extremely challenging month. I enjoyed almost every moment of it, but from an emotional perspective I’m still glad it’s over and done with.
All of a sudden the calendar has flipped over and presented me with a fresh page containing 28 new little blank squares. Only one is filled at the moment and it’s a biggie.
On the 24th it will be ONE WHOLE YEAR since I hit target at Slimming World.
This is particularly significant because there has NEVER been a single period of my life where my weight has remained stable for so long. Try as I might I can’t actually remember ANY length of time when it didn’t immediately rebound upwards after any transient period of healthy eating or weight loss.
I always crash dieted then started ‘eating normally again’.
The truth was that I’d always failed to recognise previously that I never ate normally in the first place, and therefore all that I was really saying was ‘I’m about to return to bingeing on crap and drinking myself to death’.
I don’t do this any more though and I’ve had to admit over the last few years that even now I occasionally still struggle with the definition of ‘normal’.
The war is therefore not won.
I’m still trying to balance my food intake – thanks largely to recent changes in my usual daily exercise regimes (which make me even more hungry than usual) and a more varied personal schedule that’s reduced attendance at my normal Saturday group.
This Saturday is no exception (I’m not weighing in today) and if I want to be in target by the 24th I’m going to have to watch myself like a hawk in the coming weeks.
Once I’ve done that will I get to hold a diamond target membership badge – which represents proof positive (to me at least) that I’m capable maintaining the health and fitness levels I have now for the rest of my life.
When (not if – because I’m going to do it) I pin this to my lapel it will prove emphatically that I can deal with both the highs and the lows of life and not turn to the wrong things for comfort.
It will state in no uncertain terms that I have finally changed for good. I’m on a mission and it doesn’t matter where I am or what I’m doing because I need to remain focused.
Once again this week I’ve been in Sussex (a long way away from my usual routines) and trying hard not to slip into a holiday mode. So far I’ve been a good boy – and have kept one thought at the forefront of my mind.
Where there are pavements there are opportunities to burn calories.
At the moment the ones in Sussex may be a little slippery and treacherous but they’re absolutely beautiful.
When there are sunrises like this framing a frosty treeline it’s not really that much of a hardship to get out and about – even early in the morning.
For once the temperature isn’t really getting to me. Whilst it’s really really cold at the moment a few months ago I invested in a pair of thermal long johns – and boy was the purchase worthwhile!!
When I arrived in Sussex on Wednesday it was just a teeny bit frosty – but eventually (just like everywhere else in the UK) snow arrived to properly whiten my surroundings.
I’m just thankful that we aren’t experiencing the same kind of conditions as parts of America mind you – because they seem to have it bad.
Even though I don’t have to deal with minus twenty six degrees in Hell it’s at times like these that I’m really glad that I’ve learned the importance of layering outdoors gear.
While a big thick coat might seem like the answer in weather like this, more often than not when you’re walking it really isn’t. Invariably you’ll always get hot and want to take something off (as one of my regular ‘thermostaically challenged’ twalking companions will attest to.)
If all of your warmth potential is contained within one item then you’ve just lost the lot. Now when I’m out and about in this kind of weather (as well as my long johns) I wear a moisture wicking long sleeved Berghaus top, a light long sleeved zip neck fleece pullover and a down (roll packable) jacket with a hood.
When it comes to a place like Brighton (which I visited again on Thursday) this is REALLY worthwhile because around the shops and city centre there’s only the temperature to contend with – but when you hit the seafront the wind is relentless.
At times it threatened to take me off my feet – and capturing a selfie with my phone wobbling back and forth in my hand was actually rather difficult to do.
Despite its climactically capricious nature though I’m starting to rather like the place.
I’ve come to the conclusion (particularly now that I’ve found all the charity shops) that there are few real (what I would call) bargains to be found within its city limits. There are however many many kitsch things to fill your life with if you have peculiar enough taste and the shelf space to accommodate them.
Prices down south definitely do not mirror the ones in the charity shops of Warwickshire. All you have to do is glance in the window of an estate agent to see why this is.
There’s a huge disparity between the social classes there – and this is most apparent both in the cost of real estate and the tastes of those that inhabit it.
Here flamboyant wealth often stands side by side with grinding poverty (as the vagrants hoovering up the free coffee in Waitrose demonstrated) but the more well off residents of Brighton and Hove don’t like to appear too wealthy.
Their clothing choices (mirroring their furnishing ones) seem markedly different to the infinitely more reserved Warwickians that I’m used to. People with money in this region prefer to dress with more a more… bohemian vibe, and often the well off ones look pretty much the same as the poor ones.
Often the only thing missing from the rich ones seems to be a can of strong cider and a sleeping bag.
Those with enough money to look poor and eccentric make significant effort to do so – and the vendors in places like ‘Snoopers Paradise’ are keen (at a price) to cater to their lower rent tastes.
Because it’s so varied I tend to love pretty much everything I find in Brighton but sadly I can afford virtually none of it – and I’m definitely going to need a job before I can develop a different attitude toward the markets and stalls I’ve found so far.
All in all I walked about eight miles around the various different parts of Brighton on Thursday – and whilst this is was partially due to my willingness to explore thrift stores it’s also because I’m driven by my stats.
As always I’m pretty obsessive about what I do every month – and even while I’m away from home the idea of my averages slipping is something that drives me quietly potty.
Thankfully there’s a leisure centre with a swimming pool near to where I’m staying – and on Thursday morning I popped in for a dip. Oddly this is a variable length pool with a large boom at one end that can be moved up and down the breadth of its run.
This changes the distance you swim from 33m to 25m or back again, depending on the time of day you visit. In the space it creates when shifted up a bit (when I visited) there was a spirited aquafit class led by a very loud woman bouncing back and forth in gaudy leggings and trainers on the side of the pool. On Thursday morning her group was positively crammed with pensioners waving pieces of foam around their heads and under water.
It’s quite unusual to have music pumping away in the background while I swim – but not entirely unwelcome. Since I still don’t do breaststroke with my head under the water it meant that I could rhythmically paddle away to the beat.
Time consequently flew by while I was there.
One thing this definitely made me realise was just how good my local facilities are after their recent refurbishment. Whilst water is water and I’m happy to just pound out the lengths anywhere the changing rooms, lighting, fixtures and general tone of The Dolphin pale in comparison to St Nicholas.
Either way – using it has enabled me to maintain my average daily distance total for swimming – which I’m very pleased to report is for January is just under 1.5km per day.
I’ve let things with my walking slide a little since November because of the extra swimming I’m doing – and whilst I really wanted to keep it at the same level the truth is it’s simply unsustainable.
If I do I’ll just end up running myself ragged trying to do too much, losing all enjoyment in it – or even worse pull or strain something.
Even so I think I’m still doing pretty darned well with my mies per day average…
Overall this means that whilst my daily exercise minutes are roughly the same, my average active calories burned has increased noticeably from where it was in October.
Compared to March last year I’m burning almost 800kcal extra per day.
So – all is good – and I’m on track for my diamond target member badge. Over the coming weeks you can probably expect to hear much much more about this as I near the moment and at some point have the occasional worry or stress!
Watch this space internet!
Davey
The next milestone So - January is over. As innocuous as it seemed at first, this turned out to be a completely fantastic but also…

Do you have a fear of missing out on your goals?
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
We’ve all heard of the phrase FOMO (anxiety that you’re missing out on an exciting event), but what about FOMOG? FOMOG refers to the fear of missing out on goals for example: “I’m going to get a promotion this year”, “by June I’m going to have the perfect abs” or perhaps you’ve simply told yourself “in 2019 I’m going to be less stressed” – Starting to sound relatable?
We live in a world where everybody’s achievements are on public display, perfectionism is praised and office workers do an extra 17 hours a month ‘just to be seen.’ With everyone stepping their game up a gear, the fear of not achieving your goals can become even more terrifying, because lets face it, nobody wants to be a failure right? Our experts are here to help you set achievable stepping-stones for the following goals...
Before we start… What do you want?
Isabella Venour, London Coach and Founder of Mind-Style (www.mind-style.com) explains, “It’s easy to compare ourselves with others, especially when we get stuck scrolling through social media and get a brief snapshot of someone else’s life - their gorgeous holiday destination, their funny night out with friends and their booming business or career.”
“Trying to focus on all the things you want to be, do and have in your life can leave you feeling overwhelmed. To help it feel more manageable, write down all your goals (so that they literally start to become a reality) and the date by which you’d love to achieve them. Decide on which one you want to prioritise and break that down into chunks, identifying which of those chunks you can focus on first. Then decide, over the next week or two, what one thing you can do that will get you a step closer to achieving that goal.”
Top tip: “We often know what we don’t want in life, so spend some time thinking about what you do want and watch how your mind starts looking for and finding solutions.” Goal: I want a great summer bod
I know it sounds cliché, but at one point or another, we’ve all said to ourselves, “this is the year I’m going to feel great in body.” Then one fad diet later – we give up. “Diets don’t work. It doesn’t matter what kind of diet it is – whether it’s high protein, high fibre, low carb, low fat, alkaline, paleo or a juice fast - they all end the same way. Yes you might lose weight in the short-term but harsh diets or faddy regimes simply aren’t sustainable. The moment you quit, you will put on all the weight you lost and often more besides,” explains the UK’s leading Nutritionist, Dr Marilyn Glenville (www.marilynglenville.com).
Top Tip: “The key to long-term weight loss is by changing your eating patterns and lifestyle. Yes it will be gradual, but it will stay off and you will feel wonderful. If you makehealth your goal rather than just inch loss, your whole perspective and relationship with food will change.” For more information on why diets don’t work and what you can do that does, get yourself a copy of Natural Alternatives to Dieting (£9.97, Amazon).
Goal: I want to be a success
Whether your goal is to get your dream job, a promotion or a pay rise, first things first, sleep. “Sleep is the foundation for an energetic and productive work day. Avoid screen time 1-2 hours before bed, and enjoy calming teas such as valerian root or lemon balm for a more restful nights sleep,” advises London’s Leading Nutritionist Lily Soutter (www.lilysoutternutrition.com). This will be much more beneficial than staying an extra 17 hours at work a month ‘just to be seen’.
Goal: I want to gain more knowledge
In order to acquire as much knowledge as possible we need to have the energy to not only motivate ourselves but also to retain and regurgitate the information. A huge chunk of our energy comes from our diet. Nutritionist Fiona Lawson, working in collaboration with itsu, the healthy Asian-inspired food chain, recommends snacking on seaweed. “From Japanese nori to Welsh laverbread, seaweed is a delicacy that’s been enjoyed for thousands of years. This special type of algae contains virtually all of the minerals that are found in the ocean. These minerals are essential for many bodily functions, but especially when it comes to supporting energy levels. Iodine, for example, is vital for thyroid function. Your thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland found in your neck. It may be small, but it plays a huge role in governing your metabolism and thus affects how vibrant you feel. Another valuable mineral found in seaweed is iron. This enables our red blood cells to carry oxygen all around our body, which is essential for keeping us bright, alert and full of vitality.”
“Seaweed also contains several B vitamins, such as riboflavin and pantothenic acid. The body uses these to help us break down our food effectively, enabling us to derive as much energy from our meals and snacks as possible. By selecting nutrient-rich meals and snacks, such as itsu’s Crispy Seaweed Thins (£1, Available Nationwide at Tesco), you are taking powerful steps to support your wellbeing.”
Goal: I want to gain confidence
Have you turned the big 40 and noticed a dip in your confidence? “From around the age of 40 your body will start preparing for the menopause. As these changes happen, it is not unusual for some women to think that they are going ‘crazy’ during this time, and it is important to know that these symptoms are common and that you can do something about them. The sorts of symptoms you may start to experience include physical symptoms like hot flushes, night sweats, lack of sex drive, tiredness, weight gain, vaginal dryness, drier skin and hair, joint pains, hair loss, headaches and psychological ones such as depression, mood swings, forgetfulness, lack of concentration, loss of confidence and self-esteem, anxiety and tearfulness. Make sure you are eating healthily and get your blood sugar in balance, because being on the blood sugar roller coaster can make these hormone fluctuations feel worse and will make you feel less confident, more anxious and irritable. This means not only thinking about the quality of the food that you eat but also the timing. You need to completely eliminate added sugar and refined carbohydrates and reduce caffeine in order to see a marked improvement in your confidence and mood generally,” explains Dr Marilyn Glenville.
Goal: I want to save
Many of us would like to save a little extra, whether that's for a wedding, house, car or a holiday. Overtime is great but think about things that you could do everyday to save an extra pound here and there. Did you know that you can save money and reduce waste by making your fresh food last longer?
Lily Soutter shares her top tips:
“Brush an avocado with lemon juice or olive oil once cut open to stop browning.”
“Freeze fresh herbs by chopping them up with garlic and mix with butter salt and pepper, roll into a log shape and wrap in cling film. You can then cut off chunks and use them on meat and fish to add flavour.”
“Store your fruit and veg separately – some fruits such as apple and banana can promote ripening in other fruits”
“Keep lettuce or salad leaves and fresh herbs in a Tupper-ware with dry paper towel to absorb their moisture and prevent them going off”
“Don’t wash your veggies before putting them in the fridge. Keeping it whole (not chopped up will also help this as less enzyme browning will occur)”
“Store asparagus upright in a glass of water to help them stay crisp”
Goal: I want to be less stressed
85% of UK adults are experiencing stress on a regular basis. Maintaining positive thoughts and feelings is easier when you have a little helping hand for those daily stressors.
The Hemp hype is the new generation of natural relief. The Natures Plus “HempCeutix is an extraordinary range that uses the lastest generation technology to produce life-changing products, explains Nutritionist at Natures Plus (www.naturesplus.co.uk), Martina Della Vedova. “HempCeutix Stress (£48.25, www.planetorganic.com) includes 5mg of complete hemp phytocannabinoids per serving. Phytocannabinoids are natural substances found in cannabis sativa plants. When we absorb them, they interact with our nervous system, brain and immune system. They do this by helping to increase the activity of natural chemicals produced in our own body known as endocannabinoids (note that despite the name, endocannabinoids themselves are not from cannabis – they were simply named after it). Endocannabinoids have effects on many systems and processes in our body, including digestion and appetite, mood, stress response and our immune system.” This product also contains “essential nutrients and soothing herbs, helping to overcome tiredness and fatigue. These include vitamin E, Zinc, Vitamin B12 and standardised reishi mushroom extract: reishi medicinal mushrooms is a very potent herb which acts as an Adaptogen and eases the body into recovery and balance.”

How to Choose a Smart Home Security System
The smart tech industry continues to grow, and now, like your lighting, heating and speakers, the burglar alarm has been given a modern update for the smartphone era.
Recent research has found that 71% of us do not feel our homes are secure enough and one in 50 British properties has suffered a break-in in the last 12 months.
Despite this, a full 85% of UK homeowners only install additional security features after their house has already been burgled.
It’s clear that it’s time to start thinking seriously about how we keep our abodes safe from intruders. Traditional CCTV setups can be expensive to run, and often feature grainy video quality, which makes it difficult to identify trespassers.
Fortunately, a wealth of smart tech options now exists to protect your property with just a few taps on a touchscreen. These devices give you the ability to lock your house remotely, receive real time updates on people leaving and entering and watch HD footage recorded from wherever you happen to be, at any time.
Most smart home hubs also provide integration with other tech you may already own, supercharging your setup with more helpful features.
The Loxone smartphone app offers precise control over your home’s security features
Fancy interacting with your home via Alexa? No problem. Want to set lighting and heating patterns in tandem with alarms and holiday modes? You’ve got it!
In theory, this should make it easier for you to find the best solution for your household – especially as these products are generally simple to customise.
But with so many different options out there, it’s worth weighing up your choice properly to maximise the effectiveness of your new setup. Here, I’ve broken down the primary considerations you should make in order to pick the right system.
What do you want to use it for?
Individual households will need different levels and methods of protection, depending on factors like the size and location of your home and how often you’ll be in the property.
Most burglars are opportunists, and if they see a visible security system, they’re likely to move on elsewhere.
If you’re just looking to cover the basics, your needs might be met by one of the starter kit options on the market.
These setups will generally include a combination of cameras, sirens, door locks, motion detectors and sensors that can spot when a door or a window has opened.
For instance, the Somfy starter pack includes a TaHoma Smart Home box, motion detector, opening sensor, siren and indoor camera that can be hooked up to a smartphone or tablet, so you can monitor your property and download recordings should an intruder be detected.
The Netatmo indoor camera sends an immediate alert to your phone when an intruder enters your home, complete with a picture of their face and a video recording. To avoid unnecessary alerts, you can train the device to identify loved ones with a single click during the initial setup
Nearly all brands will provide the chance to add on upgrades that are tailored to the bespoke needs of your household. For example, some companies offer baby monitoring facilities.
The Panasonic Smart Home system features a night vision camera with a two-way microphone and even comes with a selection of lullabies to soothe baby to sleep. And if you know only the kids are going to be in, Loxone’s setup is capable of disabling dangerous appliances, like the cooker, until you return.
For those who travel a lot, whole-house integrated systems, such as those available from Smarthomes, Moss Technical and Loxone, offer holiday modes that simulate occupancy.
Some can even learn last week’s activity and play it back – incorporating lights, curtains, TV use etc.
Moss Technical’s Niko Home Control systems can also trigger speakers to play a barking dog track and switch lights on when movement is detected outside.
If you have elderly relatives, opting for a solution with a motion sensor can alert you to any unusual activity – set your app to let you know if grandma has not entered the kitchen by 11:00AM, for instance.
Some offerings can even be programmed to ignore your pet’s movements so that they don’t set off the alarm. ADT can tailor its security setups to incorporate these features.
It’s also worth thinking about whether you can use the items included in your package creatively. For example, if you have set your lighting, heating and blinds to turn on automatically when you arrive home from work, perhaps through GPS proximity, you could have the system switch off the alarm.
If this level of integration appeals to you, opting for a solution that offers If This, Then That (IFTTT) compatibility could be a good option.
On the IFTTT website, you can search through thousands of automation recipes that can help make your tech work harder for you.
What’s your budget?
Some starter security packages might not be enough by themselves if you have a larger property. Shelling out for additional cameras and sensors can quickly add up, so make sure you’re considering the pay off when making your initial choice.
Remember that the cheapest all-in-one kit may not end up the most cost-effective solution if you need a lot of extras to ensure your home is fully secured.
A good budget option is the Samsung SmartThings Starter Kit, in which you get two multipurpose sensors, a motion detector, a hub and a power outlet for £200, with the option to feed in additional compatible items, ranging from security features through to voice assistants and even your washing machine.
Nest Cam Indoor has a built-in speaker and mic, so you can hear what’s happening at home and even speak to intruders (or the dog) over the microphone
At the top of the range, the likes of Loxone specialise in whole-house automation infrastructure. This can connect 150 different products to create a complete smart system, incorporating security, lighting, heating, blinds and multimedia functions.
It’s worth noting that if your setup includes cameras, many suppliers require you to pay a monthly subscription fee to keep the footage on their cloud-based storage.
While these generally aren’t too pricey, it adds another cost to your monthly outgoings. If this is a concern, look for a firm that will let you download your footage locally. Netatmo and Panasonic, for instance, do not charge a monthly fee.
How confident are you in installing a smart system yourself?
Many plug-and-play setups are solid on the basis of speed and ease of setup, with installation generally controlled directly from the smartphone app.
The Nuki smart lock, for example, can be fitted over your existing lock and securely installed within 90 seconds without the need for screws or drills. Similarly, the Ring smart doorbell comes with all you need to fit it on your own in just a few minutes.
But setting a system up yourself has its limitations.
For instance, if you aren’t familiar with a home’s typical weakest points, then you may not place your cameras or sensors in the most appropriate areas.
So, while you might want to save on costs, it is worth considering hiring a professional to carry out your installation.
This eliminates the risk that your system might be fitted inefficiently, which could mean the property still remains a viable target for thieves.
All the smart home offerings by Yale come with a free security survey of your abode, where a trained professional will assess the site’s vulnerabilities and inform you of any other weak points that could benefit from an upgrade.
You can then elect to have them carry out the fit for a £109.99 fee. Afterwards, the installer will test the new system and provide training on how to use it.
Closer Look
The CCTV setup in this listed home consists of 43 cameras, which includes static, PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) and dome units. The owners can view recordings on their smartphone or tablet, even when they aren’t at the house.
Contact and vibration detectors are embedded in every accessible window and door and PIR motion detection is used throughout the property as both perimeter and trap protection.

Most security-specific solutions run off your Wi-Fi, meaning they won’t work outside of a certain range.
If you set this up DIY, you might place cameras outside of the signal boundary, or where walls or furniture may block the signal and prevent it from working properly. If you’re worried about the efficiency of your Wi-Fi, then consider commissioning a professional wired installation, or look for a system with GPRS.
Honeywell offers several GPRS smart alarm options that will still send notifications via email and SMS, even if your property suffers a power failure.
How tech-savvy are you?
Good smart home products should make your life easier, not add complication.
If you have brand loyalty, and opt to use your preferred company’s tech, then you should be able to feed the new security capabilities into your existing system quite easily.
If you elect to use different suppliers for the various smart features within your home, you may end up with multiple apps to control each element – so consider if this is something you’re happy to deal with.
Regardless of which system you opt for, be sure to take the time to fully test it once installed, so you know it’s working as it should. Seven homes a minute are burgled in the UK, so it’s worth making sure yours isn’t next.

three inspiring campaigns that remind manufacturers to be human in the course of the holidays – Advertising and marketing Land
We’ve heard lots recently that manufacturers must present empathy, that they should make a “human connection” with shoppers. Whereas that has all the time been true, it’s lately change into extra necessary with client belief at a historic low. This improvement makes belief an important trait for manufacturers to construct—greater than one in three shoppers rank “belief in model” as amongst their prime three causes they store at a specific retailer.
The vacations symbolize an unusually promising time for manufacturers to point out their human facet. With regards to branding, main American corporations are likely to focus lots on the Tremendous Bowl. In the meantime, throughout the pond within the U.Okay., yuletide campaigns have lengthy been valued as the most effective branding juncture on the calendar. Throughout this second in time when empathy and authenticity are seen as keys to branding success, U.S. entrepreneurs have a chance to reimagine their vacation season methods as extra inspirational and fewer transactional.
Positive, some main U.S. manufacturers have made a behavior out of interesting to shoppers’ humanity in the course of the holidays. Take Lexus’ “December to Bear in mind” tagline, which resonates with People like few different campaigns—in reality it’s the main automotive identify for model consciousness in the course of the holidays. Budweiser has often had the Clydesdales in Christmas adverts. And Coca-Cola virtually made Santa Claus a part of its emblem for many years to faucet into the vacation spirit.
There’s a chance for extra U.S. entrepreneurs to undertake the vacation playbook. With that in thoughts, listed here are three campaigns from Europe that ought to encourage entrepreneurs in all places to inform extra empathetic tales throughout this season and in seasons to come back.
The Tear-Jerker
youtube
Referred to as “Love Is A Reward,” this video has made hundreds of thousands of parents misty-eyed. It chronicles a younger man’s journey by the primary 25 days of December, marking every successive day without work of his kitchen calendar as if he’s a grade schooler anticipating the arrival of Santa Claus. What he’s wanting ahead to is a go to from his deceased mom’s voice through an audio cassette tape that was made 13 years prior. This video means that the mom was terminally sick and made 13 recordings for her son—named Chris, or “Puppet” to his mum—to hear to each Christmas morning after she had left the world. It’s a gradual construct however packs an emotional wallop on the finish.
Which model is the advertiser? It’s an advert for the filmmaker, and his identify is Phil Beastall. And it was made in…2014. But it surely went viral this vacation season. And it value solely $65. What a exceptional, artistic story, and it must be seen as one the most effective B2B adverts of current reminiscence. It appears extremely doubtless that Beastall’s telephone’s been ringing off the hook with calls from entrepreneurs in current weeks—in spite of everything, his 2-minute, 27-second video has been seen practically 12 million occasions on social media.
The Epic
youtube
Elkjøp, which is a Norwegian electronics retailer, tells the story of a younger woman along with her household at Christmastime. She meets an older relative she’s scared of at first. They finally change into kindred spirits after it’s clear they share a standard curiosity in flight. It’s a “present, don’t inform” form of story, leaving many dots unconnected. It may very well be even described as cryptic since there isn’t a spoken dialogue, solely slight narration. Referred to as “To present extra,” the four-minute video is epic by promoting requirements, with a message that presents typically imply greater than phrases. Manufacturers that seize deeper themes across the holidays like Elkjøp did strike a significant chord that enhances their humanity. The marketing campaign was picked up by dozens of consumer-facing and promoting publications, receiving a whole bunch of hundreds of views for advert vloggers alone.
The Elton
youtube
Again within the U.Okay., John Lewis & Companions’ TV spot goes by pop music icon Elton John’s life in reverse, ending with the poignant second when he received an upright piano for Christmas from his mom as a younger boy. The 2-and-a-half-minute video concludes with the tagline: “Generally a present is greater than a present.”
It’s been like one other High of the Pops hit for the Elton John and John Lewis, an organization with a historical past of profitable vacation adverts. Much like the opposite examples, it’s a model utilizing a novel storytelling method to have a good time the deep connections that deliver household collectively across the holidays. Nothing may very well be extra human than that. The John Lewis model, which operates a sequence of high-end shops all through the UK, has garnered at the least 25 million views on social media channels.
The season for empathy
Such view metrics clarify that buyers reply when manufacturers present their humanity this time of 12 months. Humanity builds a reference to prospects and creates extra belief. And even when measuring ROI is your end-all, be-all, be aware that practically half of People (47 %) get their vacation procuring data from TV adverts. The truth that these spots could be shared by hundreds of thousands on social networks makes them much more impactful.
And as Beastall’s brief movie confirmed, it doesn’t matter in case you are promoting B2B creativity or high-end clothes. The vacations are an unbelievable alternative for entrepreneurs to point out their humanity.
Opinions expressed on this article are these of the visitor creator and never essentially Advertising and marketing Land. Workers authors are listed right here.
