Today’s colour is a light mauve — a pale, greyish purple that I am very fond of.⠀ What do you think of this colour?⠀ .⠀ ⠀ There are many more of these posts to come in my palette series of favourite colours. Mama, her and Abuelita,

The drive is haul and

at least an hour 45 in traffic,

Is well worth the trip.

Mama struggles and Abuelita carries

what she can

(an absolute-strong woman in her height and heart,

now regulated to carrying maracas and

snacking on the free chips

provided - she deserves the break)

What they take

is what they need,

much less than what they’re dealt.

They leave what they don’t need behind

For others like them who may,

They live in a dignity

that is scarcely afforded to them

By these Northside entrepreneurs,

Diners who see their singing

As sport and not heritage

With accolades coming from waiters

And gifts of to-go flan

Given from brothers and sisters

Working back of house.

Baby girl will still dance and watch

Dinosaur Train on the long ride home.

Abuelita sleeps in the van,

almost immediately,

clutching the free desserts

And the cash envelope of the $128

they made that night

-their $60 cut of the three hundred and a splitting of the tips -

Mama will drive slowly in the late night return traffic,

Humming the blustery songs

that they just played,

imagining where she can improve them,

occasionally smiling when she catches glimpses in the rear view mirror

Of her little darling,

Passed out,

headphones on and cartoons running,

With her little mauvepurple dress

flowing,

catching the night’s breeze

from the rolled down windows.
