You felt sick with nerves as Vinny opened the door of the cafe for you, smiling as he motioned for you to walk in.

"Such a gentleman." You teased, stepping inside. “I’m going to use the bathroom quickly, could you get me an iced latte and... Just any sandwich you think sounds good?”

“Wait, I thought we were getting lunch for everyone-” He called after you, but you were already heading to the back, spotting his parents sitting at a table tucked away in the counter.

"Y/n?" Vinny's dad smiled, "There you are, we were about to call you!"

"Sorry," you chuckled nervously, "It's been a busy day."

“That's fine, don't worry! How have you been darling?” Vin’s mother beamed as you approached their table, “Go and tap him on the shoulder, that'll surprise him!” She said with a grin to his dad, who chuckled as he got up. 

“Good idea, sweetheart.” He smiled, making his way to the counter. 

“Anyway,” she nodded, “Sit down, dear! How are you?”

“I’m doing great, thank you.” You smiled, “What about you? How was your anniversary party? I’m sorry we couldn’t visit you the day after, we were in such a rush to leave, Vin wanted to make sure we got back in time.”

“That’s alright, sweetheart,” she waved off your apology, “It was lovely! Most of the family was there together for the first time in ages. Unfortunately my daughter couldn’t make it though. She’s busy with work- but we visited her a few days ago to see the newest member of her little family! Let me show you a picture of her puppy!”

She reached for her glasses as she scrolled through her phone to find a picture to show you, whilst Vinny's father approached the counter and tapped him on the shoulder, a wide smile on his face.

“Hello, son.” 

“Dad? W-What are you doing here?” Vinny blinked in surprise, a smile spread across his face nonetheless.

“Me and your mother thought we’d surprise you! We were just going to turn up to your show but y/n thought it’d be a good idea to meet you here instead!”

“She knew you were coming?” He questioned. 

“Yes! We told your friend... Richard, is it? He organised it all for us, got us on the guest list and everything!”

“And Rick? So when y/n told me we were coming to get lunch for everyone... She was lying?”

“Yeah! Wasn't it a nice surprise?!” He grinned, as Vinny stood with a puzzled look on his face, before he was handed your order, followed by his. 

As they began to walk back to the table, he could hear you laughing with his mother, an awful guilt settling over him as he saw how much his mother adored you.

“Vin why have I never seen a picture of you when you were younger! You looked so different!” You grinned, his mother showing you pictures she had on her phone. 

“Please, don’t-” Vinny groaned, but it was too late.

“Oh and look! This must have been when he first joined the band!” She turned her phone back around and you had to hold back your laughter, he was adorable. 

“Oh, Vin!” You looked at him with a smile, “Your hair was so different!”

“Please don’t go there.” He chuckled, handing you your food and coffee. 

“So how have you been, sweetie?” Vin's mother asked and he thought before nodding his head. 

“I’ve been good," he said, "We’ve got about a month left now and I just want to be home. As much as I love touring and playing for everyone, it just gets a bit overwhelming and draining after a while... which is why I’m so glad I have y/n with me this time.” 

“Awh, Vinny…” You smiled, which he returned. His hand rested on your thigh beneath the table, totally unexpected but it felt somewhat natural.

“And how are the others? Ricky and Justin and… Oh, I always forget their names!” 

“They’re doing good too,” Vinny chuckled, “But they’re so busy all the time. As soon as we finish the show we’ve gotta be straight on the bus to the next one, isn’t that right, babe?” 

He tapped your thigh as if to say play along.

“Oh yeah, we’re so busy!” 

“That must be so stressful,” Vinny’s mother frowned, “Do you have many days off?”

“We do, actually,” you explained, “Usually after a show, we get one day off, but sometimes it’s two if we’re lucky.”

“Yeah, so we played a show two nights ago, we’re playing again tonight, then we’re on the bus travelling to the next city.”

“Oh, good,” she smiled, “Do you have any plans for these days off.”

“Uh…” Vinny looked over at you for help. 

“No not this time, I think we’re just gonna chill aren’t we, babe?”

“Yeah that’s what I thought.” He nodded. 

As Vinny’s parents began to ask more questions, changing the conversation, your phone began to ring. You checked who it was, assuming it wasn't anything important, until you saw it was Noah calling?

“Do you need to take that, dear?” Vin’s mother asked, and you shook your head. 

“It should be okay.” You smiled, placing your phone on the table screen down after declining the call. 

“Are you sure?” Vin asked under his breath and you nodded, but then your phone started to ring again. 

“I’m so sorry.” You sighed, excusing yourself. You took your phone and left the table, making your way out of the cafe. 

“Y/n?” Noah asked over the phone.

“What's up? Is everything okay?” You ask, sitting down at one of the tables outside.

“Yeah, uh… I forgot to say the venue’s having an afterparty tonight-” 

“What?!” You grinned, “How could you forget to tell me?” 

“I thought it was tomorrow, it wasn’t until Justin asked about how we could get Shae on the list-”

“Shae’s gonna be here? I’ve been dying to meet her, oh my god…”

“Who?” You heard Vinny ask as the door to the cafe shuts. You looked at Vinny with wide eyes to say ‘shut up!’

“Shae.” You mouthed. 

“Well she’ll be here soon,” Noah said, “What time do you think you’ll be back?”

“I’ll probably be about 20 minutes,” you nodded, “What time do you need me back?”

“As long as it’s before we go on.” Noah chuckled, "So what I needed to ask y-"

“I’ll let you know when I’m leaving, okay? I better get back to my… friends.”

“Okay doll, see you later.” 

“Bye.” You smiled as you ended the call, putting your phone down on the table.

“Noah?” He sighed. 

“How did you guess,” you smiled, “Did you know there was an afterparty tonight?”

“Shit, I forgot,” Vinny sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. “Don’t tell my parents, though… the last thing I need is for them to know.”

“You’re such a great son.” You laughed, “Don’t worry I won't. Should we get back to them?”

“Yeah, I said you were on the phone to your boss.” He chuckled, “Let’s get back.” 

Vin held the door open for you as you both made your way back to his parents.

Later, backstage, the energy was electric. Everybody was buzzing, you even found yourself swept up in the excitement. It wasn't long until Motionless were supposed to be on, and everybody was rushing around getting ready to go on.

“Ahh!” You heard a woman’s voice screech as you walked into the green room, “Y/n?!”

“Shae?” You grinned, placing your camera down on the table and rushing over to wrap your arms around her in a hug, “It’s so great to finally meet you oh my gosh!” 

“You too, sweetie!” She grinned, “Angela was just catching me up on some drama…”

“What did she say,” you whispered, “Did she mention names.” 

Shae shot a look over at Vinny and nodded toward him with a knowing smirk.

You knew you could trust Shae, ever since you started this tour you’ve been talking online every now and then, and you’ve both been meaning to organise something and meet up when the tour's over.

“So how have you been?” You asked, sitting down with her on the couch opposite a couple of the guys. 

“I’ve been great, honey. But what about you? On your first tour?!”

“I’ve never had so much fun before in my life,” you admit, “But I can’t wait to get back to my own home, sleep in my own bed.” You groan. 

“I know,” she chuckled, “When warped tour was going, I was there every summer following it around, it wasn't for the weak. It's actually how I met Justin too.” She smiled.

Before you could say reply, Chris walked into the room. You were always in awe of how Angela did his makeup, but it was very extra tonight, along with his stage outfit.

“We’re on in a few minutes guys!” He announces, and you nod your head. 

You can't help but give Shae another hug before picking your camera back up, following the guys out.

“Is everything okay?” You asked Chris, who nodded. 

“It’s just that… I've always wanted to play a show here, it's been on my bucket list ever since I was young… I guess it just means a lot to me to be here.” He smiled.

“You’re gonna kill it out there.” You grinned back, “Like always. But for now…” You get your camera ready, “Say ‘BLEGH!’” 

You did the usual, rush around the stage, try not to trip Ricky or Ryan up, or bump into Justin as he spontaneously sprinted across the stage. Most importantly, try not to get too caught up in Vinny as he sat behind his drums.

You were out of breath halfway through the show and decided to stand at the side of the stage with Angela and Shae, taking a breather for a few minutes.

“How was it with his parents?” Angela asked, and you nodded your head, transfixed by the sight of Vin just doing his job. “Hello?! Earth to y/n?!” She laughed. 

“Sorry,” you chuckled, “Yeah it was good, they’re such lovely people I don’t want to break their hearts when they find out the truth.” 

“Maybe they won’t have to.” Shae wiggled her eyebrows, “C’mon, if you liked Noah as much as you supposedly do, why would you even be interested in Vinny?”

“I don’t know.” You frown, “But I don't see why I have to make that decision, we're just having fun whilst we're on tour. Then, when we get home, I'll think about it."

“Maybe they’d be up for a threesome.” Shae giggled. 

“I had a dream about that!” You gasped, “It was so hot- Oh shit, Rick's solo, I better get back out there…” You realised you’d been standing along for too long, rushing back down towards the barricade to get some more pictures from that angle.

You couldn’t say there was anything more attractive than when the guys finished playing and you’d see Vin come back, his paint worn off, his hair a big fluffy mess and his body glistening with sweat. You were sitting in the green room having a catch up with Bryan and the others when the guys walked back in, and you couldn’t take your eyes off Vin as he ran his hands through his hair.

He noticed this, giving you a smirk as he collected his phone and left the room again. You assumed he had gone to get changed and sat on the couch with your legs crossed, trying to focus on whatever Bryan was saying when you felt your phone vibrate in your lap. It was a text from Vinny. 

Bathrooms. Now x

You rose from your seat, apologising to Bryan, saying you’d left something by the stage and left the room. 

However, you were caught by Ricky as you were making your way through the venue.

"Hey, I got a text from Vin's dad not long before the show started, he said you and Vin met them for lunch?"

"Yeah..." You nodded, pressing your lips together, "I thought it would be a good idea, I don't want them talking to the others about me and Vin-"

"So you'll carry on feeding into the lie? Y/n, what's really going on?"

"Nothing, I just don't want to have to tell all the guys the real reason why I went to their party... Surely if you cared so much about Vinny you'd understand why I'm doing this."

Ricky sighed, looking down at his feet.

"I just don't like how you're both lying to his parents, they don't deserve that." He shook his head, "I'm going to find him, I'm gonna tell him he's got to tell them the truth tonight."

Ricky walked away, and once he was out of sight you carried back on, until you reached the bathroom, knocking on the door. 

“Vinny?”

The door opened slightly, and Vinny peeked out, his smirk immediately dropping into concern when he saw the look on your face.

“What’s wrong?” he asked, his voice softer than usual. He opened the door wider, letting you in.

“It’s Rick,” you said quickly, your voice just above a whisper, “He knows we went to see your parents, he knows we're still lying to them and he’s planning to confront you about it tonight.”

Vinny sighed, running a hand through his hair. His jaw tensed, and you could see the flicker of frustration in his eyes.

“What are we going to do?” you asked, pacing the floor. “He’s right, they don’t deserve to be lied to and I feel awful for it. I mean, maybe we should just-”

“Stop,” Vinny interrupted, his voice firm. “Don't worry... I’ll handle Ricky, okay? But right now...” He trailed off, his smirk returning as he glanced down at you. “I'd say we've got half an hour to ourselves...”

Your breath hitched as his fingers brushed against your wrist, pulling you closer.

“Vinny.” You warned.

“Yeah?” His smile dropped.

“Just tell me you’ve got a plan.” You said, trying to keep your focus.

He tilted his head, studying you for a moment.

“I’ll talk to him,” he said, “But later. After this.”

For a moment, you wanted to believe him, to let yourself get lost in the moment as he kissed you. But the knot in your stomach wouldn’t let you fully give in.

“Vinny,” you said more firmly this time, and he pulled back just enough to meet your eyes. His expression softened as he took in your conflicted look.

“Are you okay? Do you not want this?” He asked quietly.

“No, I do! It’s not that... And it's not just Ricky,” you admitted, your voice barely above a whisper. “It’s everything. The lies, your parents, everything... It’s all starting to feel like too much.”

He sighed, resting his forehead against yours.

“I know,” he said softly. “And I hate that you’re caught in the middle of it all. But I swear, I’m going to fix this. I promise.”

You searched his eyes, wanting to believe him, needing to believe him.

“Okay,” you whispered, though the uncertainty still lingered in the back of your mind.

He kissed you again, this time slower, softer, and you allowed yourself to kiss back this time. You were putting your trust into him right now, in more ways than one.

You hand came up to cup his face, deepening the kiss as his hands started to reach lower...

“God, you drive me insane,” he muttered against your lips, his voice low and husky.

“I was just about to say the same thing.”

He chuckled, before his lips found the sensitive spot just below your jaw. You bit your lip, stifling a small gasp.

As he kissed you, you noticed the black marks on your arm, chuckling as you pulled back a little

“Vin... I’m getting your paint on me.” You smiled against his lips, pulling back further look at him in a daze as he smirks. 

“My bad,” he pulled away from you, leaving you standing by the counter, weak in the knees as he walked over to the shower, “C’mhere.” 

You walked over to him, watching as he unbuttoned his black mesh shirt, running a hand through his hair before turning the shower on. You smiled as his hands reached for the hem of your top, pulling it over your head and throwing it down with his shirt. 

“Vinny…” You smiled, and he raised an eyebrow. “They’re not gonna wonder where we are, are they? What about your parents-”

“We’re about to fuck in the shower and you want to talk about my family?” He scoffed, locking the door, “We can worry about it later, okay? Right now, I need you.”

Your hands both rushed to finish undressing each other, kicking shoes off before his fingers were digging into your hips as he pulled you with him into the shower, smiling against your lips as the water fell on to both your bodies.

His hand came up to push your dampening hair out of your face, your arms locked around his neck, your hearts beating in sync as your bodies press against each other, closer than you've ever felt before.

He has you pressed against the wall, his wet hair hanging over his face, hiding his eyes. Traces of your lipgloss on his lips as he catches his breath, the black paint from his arms begins to wash away, trickling down on to you. He presses his forehead against yours, his hand coming up to your throat, his fingers lingering over your pulse point.

You couldn’t tell what was louder, the water in the shower or the sound of your own heartbeat as his lips come back down to capture yours.

Your hand reaches down, fingers wrapping around his hardness which was pressed against your thigh. As you begin to slowly pump him, your thumb teasing over the slit on his tip, his hand slides down to your boob. His thumb rolls over your nipple, tracing small circles over it as you whine in pleasure, looking down to see how his paint had stained both of your bodies a shade of grey. "You," you swallowed hard, meeting his eyes, "Fuck me."

He chuckled, his hands resting on the back of your thighs, giving you a nod to say I've got you, and he held you against the wall as you wrapped your legs around his waist, his drummer strength never failing to make you feel a certain way.

You watched him lean back slightly as he angled himself correctly, slowly pushing into you. Your lips found his neck, your eyes screwed shut as he bottomed out, the both of you gasping as your walls squeezed him instinctively.

You bury your face in his neck as he begins to move, your nails pressing into his biceps as he fucked you against the wall. 明日より6月なので。ヘルシンキから来るOtzir Godotとの共演などなど、いろいろとあり、楽しみです。 で、12日に3年ぶりに再会する予定だったJoseph Mauro、ここのところメールに返事がなく、ツアーの宣伝をしている様子もなかったので、大丈夫なのかと思っていたら、現在、意識不明な状態であることがわかりました。かなり心配な状況なのですが、何しろ本人とコンタクトが取れないので...。彼の回復を祈りつつ、残りのメンバーで予定通りに行います。 ◇2023◇

A Little Jealousy Never Hurts

Vinny Mauro x Reader

"I'm thankful  it's almost the end of the semester and I'm still passing all my classes," you sigh as you lean back in your chair, propping your feet up on your desk. You run your fingers sleepily down your face, but considering the late hour it's no surprise you're tired.

Your boyfriend nods his head where he sits in the floor, leaning back into the bed you share as he plays video games. You know he's tired too, it's been a long semester and quite a struggle living with roommates, everyone having different schedules.

Still, it annoys you that he'd rather spend his free time playing games than talking to you. You've been together a year now, moved in with each other a few months ago to help with rent, and you feel like it's just not going quite as well now.

You like Vinny, he's cute, and really sweet when he's paying attention. Sometimes you think he can be rather childish and petty, a brat really, but that's what being an only child gets you. Sometimes you'd like nothing more than to lock the door and kick him out, throw his things dramatically out the window like you've seen on movies --- but only sometimes, the rest of the time you don't know if you can survive without him.

Now, actually, isn't one of those times.

He's getting on your nerves.

"Hey. Do you two want any takeout?" Your roommate asks, suddenly appearing in the doorway. He glances at your boyfriend, who's not even acknowledged him, before back at you where you sit resigned, feet still propped on your messy desk with an irritated expression. "(Y/N)?"

"Just order two of whatever you're getting." You tell him, forcing a smile. "I trust your judgement."

"I don't know if you should, but thanks. Oh, and here," he takes a few steps forward, stopping at the edge of your desk as he offers you a book. "This has been one of my favorite reads so far, I thought maybe you'd like it."

"Oh nice, thanks!" You brighten at the book he hands you, a little excited. Your roommate and you share a love of novels, fantasy books that take you to worlds you wish you could disappear into. You're close because of that, constantly swapping books back and forth, both of your rooms starting to pile up with them.

You flip the book open, letting your feet drop to the floor as you scan the synopsis on the back, curious. "It sounds pretty cool so far. Is there romance?"

"Among other things, yes."

"You know the romance is what I care about."

"Ahuh. There's also magic, wizards, demons, hunters who try to stop them without any parents to tell them what to do."

"They're always kids saving the world, huh? Why not someone our age, dying of sleep loss and trying to get a degree that won't help them at all?" You grumble, miffed. You're half tempted to write your own book, full of stupid, cheesy romance, about a girl struggling through college that somehow gets thrown into a supernatural fiasco that resorts in a hot, sweet, yet also badass boyfriend.

Too cliche?

Vinny glances over as you and your roommate talk, momentarily letting his controller rest in his lap. He had two exams today, his brain is fried and he just wanted to mindlessly play some video games before going straight to bed. It's the end of the semester and he's never been so stressed in his life.

Living with you makes it a little easier, you keep him straight and makes sure he doesn't screw up focusing on his studies. You're a nerd, but that's why he likes you so much, and you're cute, and nice when you're not harping at him like a mother.

You have a thing for books, which is what is causing your shared room to kind of fill up, not that he minds. If it makes you happy, you can have all you want. Your roommate is always coming in, leaving a book or taking one, the two of you chatting about it and going into your own little worlds.

Vinny gets jealous, admittedly. He wishes he could be so enthralled with something he goes all in to it, the way you and your friend do. He doesn't know the guy too well, they only talk because they live together, but he's not bad.

"What's going on?" He asks after a moment, just wanting to remind you that he's still in the room, that he's not invisible. His game is completely forgotten now, left on pause.

"Oh! He just recommended me another book to read," You reply, lifting it up slightly where it rests in your lap as you glance at him. "I'll give it back to you as soon as I'm done, Tony. Might take me a couple days, I still have some exams to study for."

"Don't worry about it. Just hand it back before the month is up so I can return it to the library."

Vinny frowns, crossing his arms across his chest.

You two talk so casually, and you're so relaxed with each other. He bites the inside of his cheek as he watches you interact, a tightening in his gut; this guy could so easily steal you away from him, you have more interests that match up. You both love fantasy worlds and books, talking about them, going to writing club and signings, whereas he could care less about all of that stuff. Fictional adventures with wizards and shadow hunters don't excite him like it does you guys.

Since the moment Tony moved in, he's watched the two of you grow closer and closer, and though sometimes he's quite sure Tony isn't interested in women, he still gets worried. He can't help the twisting, anxious feeling in his gut he tries to ignore all the time when he sees you together; he knows he's not perfect, he has his moments where he's a dick or a screwup, but he tries to make up for it.

"How's your last exam?" You ask your roommate, letting the book rest of your desk. "Do you think you passed?"

"Probably. I did enough cramming all I was thinking was equations, they haunted my dreams." The roommate shudders. "You?"

"Well, it's sink or swim, I guess. I was so nervous I couldn't sit still. I do not want to take that class over again."

"Let's hope you don't have too then."

"Hey, weren't you going to order food?" Vinny suddenly asks, interrupting the conversation before it goes too far. "Do you need my card or anything?"

"Oh no, I got you guys." The roommate hesitates, seeing Vinny's huffy look. "I'll go ahead and get something ordered, though. Anything you guys want in particular?"

"No." Vinny's reply is short. "Just whatever."

You send him a sharp look he ignores as he turns off the TV, getting to his feet. Your roommate purses his lips, merely nodding before taking a few steps out of the room, closing the door behind him.

"Vinny! What's with the attitude?" You scowl at him, annoyed. He's always such a jerk to your roommate, who you're starting to like more than your boyfriend. You don't know why he's always so snappy and short lately, it's getting on your nerves; so uncalled for!

"I don't have one," your boyfriend replies, sitting down on the edge of your shared bed, leaning down to grab his untied sneakers, jerking them on.

"You say with a bitchy tone." You grumble, slouching in your chair as you cross your arms. You eyeball him cautiously. "But seriously, what's your problem with Tony? He's a great roommate, he even orders us food when he's getting some, and lends me books. You borrow his toothpaste all the time since you're too cheap to buy your own."

It's not that Vinny is too cheap, he just keeps forgetting.

Vinny sighs. "I don't have an issue with Tony, alright? He's cool."

"Then what's wrong?" You genuinely don't understand.

"I just... you don't talk about stuff that way with me."

"I don't what?"

"When you and Tony talk about books, you're just --- so animated, I guess. You don't talk to me that way." he shrugs his shoulders, looking down as he fumbles with his laces. You get such bright eyes when you talk about books or the plot of them, the characters, you're so into it. It's like you immerse yourself in that world, leaving him out of it.

"I didn't think you were interested in listening to me talk about fantasy worlds." You reply, gazing at him. Is he jealous or something? "You've never seemed to be. It's just nice to have someone to share books and talk about them with, you've nothing to worry about. Tony is gay as hell anyway; you'd stand a better chance hooking up with him than I would."

Vinny rolls his eyes, his cheeks starting to get warm; he knows being jealous is stupid, he just can't help it. He really likes you, and he keeps worrying things are going to go wrong. He's never moved in with a girl before, and it seems like stuff is going fast with you.

"Are you going to answer me or ignore me?" You stare at him, irritated. You hate it when you say something or ask a question and he just doesn't respond to you, it drives you crazy!

"Er, sorry. I just, I dunno --- I wish I could be into like you are, but I'm not." he shrugs his shoulders. "I'm not much of a reader, and I can't get into it."

"We all have our different interests."

"I know."

"We both like Chinese food, and we both like to watch Gordon Ramsey yell at people. That's two things we share that I don't with anyone else," you say after a moment, wanting to make him feel better. "We talk about how annoying the patriarchy is, and we both want to move to Montana and start a cafe."

"Actually that last part is yours."

"Well, you never disagreed, figured we were on the same page."

Vinny's lips twitch, and finally he looks at you, seeing you're just gazing at him, leaning back comfortably in your chair.

"I know I shouldn't be jealous, it's dumb. I just can't help it."

"You're an only child, you just don't like sharing." You tease him, trying to lighten the mood a little. He smiles slightly, and you reach over, curling your fingers through his; the room is small, you can take on step and be on the bed beside him, so you're not too far away. "Well, we're not always going to like the same things, and  that's okay. I'm definitely not going to run off with our gay roommate. Does that make you feel better?"

"A little."

"Good." You squeeze his cold fingers. "Now let's go make sure he doesn't want to move out because he's unloved."

"I don't want to."

"Oh, come on," you get to your feet and pull, forcing him to follow suit. "Feel a little better about it now?"

"Only if you kiss me."

"Kiss you? Why would I do that?" You scoff, even as you're turning to face him, your fingers threading through his as you smile. You lean forward, pressing a soft kiss against his lips, feeling him sigh into you. His hand rises, cupping your cheek as he deepens the kiss, just holding onto you for a few moments.

This is one of the reasons you're with him. You can have a disagreement, but he's so easy to talk too, to work it out with. He listens, he thinks about it, and he's sometimes pretty reasonable about it. Plus you love it when he ends up making up with a kiss, it's always so sweet, so cheesy it makes you melt on the inside.

You suppose a little jealousy never hurts when you end up getting kisses like this.

"David?"

It's been so long since anyone's called him by that name that Jean-Paul almost walks on but he catches a whiff of a once-familiar perfume and realizes that he knows that voice.

"Raquel? Raquel, darling, look at you, you're a sight for sore eyes."

She does look good: older now, yes, but still just as elegant as an Italian model stepping out of a Vogue cover. The Brigitte Bardot hair's sleek and straight now and she's traded miniskirts and sequins for high-necked lace but it's still her.

"Look at you," she says. "You must close to fifty now. Who's your plastic surgeon?"

Jean-Paul's been running from the past ever since he landed on Earth but even still, they go out for lunch together at a little cafe he knows with the best wine selection in the city. He's glad he wore one of his better suits today, glad he's polished and pristine because most of the time he isn't.

"Are you still in the business or did you leave that behind? Feel free not to answer, I'll hardly be offended," he says after the waiter drops off their salads: berry and fig, goat cheese, candied almonds so tasty that it almost makes him cry.

"I own a martini bar in Chicago. The Rising Sun. Please drop in if you ever find yourself in the city. Marlon works there but he's the last of the old crew I keep in touch with. Do you remember Marlon?"

"With the Velvet Underground records? Trust me, I remember Marlon. Give him my regards, won't you? I'm terribly sorry we parted on such bad terms but I was a little monster back then. Although I really would like my scarf back. I'm still cross about that."

She laughs but he's not 100% joking. It was a damn good scarf and Marlon shouldn't have taken it in the breakup.

"Really, after all this time?"

"It was the finest scarf in all of Maroa, darling," he replies.

"And what of you? Are you doing well? I suppose Mauro's not still alive after all this time, is he?"

He spears a fig on his fork and it tastes good, really compliments the cheese nicely.

"Oh no, he passed about two years after you left, I think. His heart just couldn't keep up with his lifestyle. I was such a darling pet that he set me up quite nicely in his will, so now I do a bit of this and that as it pleases me. I have a little bath store now in Phoenix: Desert Sunset Soaps. It keeps me busy."

Jean-Paul leaves out the fact that he burned through most of his inheritance in less than five years and cheated and scammed his way through life for a long time after. It's in the past now. She offers her condolences because that's what one does but both of them know he never really had any emotional attachment to the man. He was fun sometimes though, even if he had the worst traits of volphs and vampires alike mixed up in a human body.

"You know, I see a ring," he continues. "Are you married? I really hope you had a fabulous wedding, darling."

"I've had three fabulous weddings," Raquel replies. "Terry's lasted a couple decades, so I think I'll keep this one. And what of you, hm?"

God, how to answer this question? He loves Volchenkov terribly but he's never sure if they're on or off.

"A bachelor through and through. I suppose I might've liked to raise a family but it is what it is."

"Then Bonnie...?"

"No, I still don't know what happened. I suppose I won't unless someone digs into cold cases and we all know how well disappearances get investigated in Maroa."

There's a hand on his.

"I'm so sorry, David. I don't mean to pry into old wounds."

"No, you're quite alright, darling, don't worry! I've made my peace with everything. My life's really charmed nowadays, trust me"

Later that night, Jean-Paul calls Vladimir. They might technically be broken up now but he just wants to hear his voice.
