Lorcana Shimmering Skies - Set 5 Revealed! New Enchanted Rares!
Update 13/06/2024:
With the reveal of Set 5, we've added in the cards that have been revealed thus far by Ravensburger! Some of the stand-out cards are Merlin, Intellectual Visionary who has the ability Overdeveloped Brain (When you play this character, if you used Shift to play him, you may search your deck for any card, put that card into your hand, then shuffle your deck) and Kronk, Head of Security with the ability Are You On The List? (During your turn, whenever this character banishes another character in a challenge, you may play a character with cost 5 or less for free.) We even saw some of the Wreck-It Ralph characters getting their own cards, such as Vanellope von Schweetz and Turbo!
Check back here for regular updates and Shimmering Skies reveals, and keep reading for our initial announcement following the Lorcast!
youtube
Original 12/06/2024: If you tuned in to the latest Lorecast from the folks over at Disney Lorcana, you'd have seen that Set 5 in this hugely popular TCG has been named Shimmering Skies! Fresh off the defeat of Ursula, the realm is celebrating this victory in style! But the dust doesn't settle for long, as things are starting to go wrong once again - and someone is trying to steal the Half Hexwell Crown! The lore of Lorcana runs deep through the game, and is as much a story as it is a competitive TCG. But what else was revealed? We're about to run you through it!
Tumblr media
Say Hello to Wreck-It Ralph!
The realm of Lorcana is ever expanding, and every set we see new characters introduced to the game in unique ways. This time round, we're welcoming Wreck-It Ralph and company! We can immediately see from booster pack artwork that Vanellope von Schweetz is going to be a prominent character in Shimmering Skies, and boy are we expecting quite the sugar rush.
However, it's Ralph that gets the limelight here - featuring alongside fan-favourite Elsa in his very own Starter Deck! This Amethyst/Ruby deck is a gateway into some new gameplay mechanics that are ever evolving with the story. These mechanics are yet to be revealed, being held closely to Ravensburger's chest as we will find out about this closer to availability. Much like before, these decks can be played alongside previous sets and even used to update your very own deck! Speaking of gateways...
Tumblr media
The Gateway to Lorcana
Also, a released ate for something that Ravensburger had revealed at the start of the year was announced in the stream! Lorcana's latest product; Gateway, will be releasing alongside Shimmering Skies. Gateway looks to be, in essence, a Learn To Play set. Think like Pokemon's Battle Academy. If you have never picked up a Lorcana deck in your life but you're itching to learn, or you want to help teach your friends in an easy format, this is the product for you. Featuring two ready-to-play decks focused around Elsa & Mickey (Ruby & Sapphire) and Stitch & Maleficent (Amber & Amethyst), a handy guide book and a playmat to get started with - you'll be ready for casuals at your local LGS in no time!
The Main Event
As with every Lorcana set, the products get a grand makeover including new accessories, new pack artwork and even. more. PLAYMATS! With Shimmering Skies you can expect to see some familiar faces making a comeback on the returning portfolios that have been missing since the First Chapter. Let's get into it!
Tumblr media
Booster Box, Packs and More
As previously mentioned, the pack artwork for this set features Vanellope von Schweetz front and centre. Alongside her, Donald Duck and Maui make up our booster packs, booster boxes, sleeved boosters and Illumineer's Trove. The artwork looks very electric bubblegum, and has a very foodie undertone (we see you with that pie, Donald...) As usual, booster boxes contain 24 packs, with each pack containing 12 cards.
The Illumineer's Trove includes the usual 8 packs, with a spindown counter, some incredibly glittery D6 dice, a storage box and 6 card dividers boasting the inks that fuel your game! The storage box even features one of the deck characters, Kronk!
We have already discussed that one of your Starter Decks will orientate around Wreck-It Ralph and Elsa, being an Amethyst/Ruby deck. For your second deck to choose from, Scar and Kronk (what a duo!) will be harnessing the power of Emerald and Steel inks, and we can't wait to see what they both have in store!
Tumblr media
Get Ready to Accessorise!
We've had Rapunzel. We've had Hunny Wizard Winnie the Pooh. What could Ravensburger possibly have in store for the latest selection of accessories?! Well, on your playmats you'll find the stunning artwork of Belle, Accomplished Mystic, surrounded by flittering rose petals! If that's not your vibe, why not pick up the Encanto-themed playmat that expands the artwork of the Ursula's Return card "Look at this Family"! The quaint yet boldly colourful depiction of the Madrigal family will really make you stand out at your weekly tournaments.
For sleeves and matching deck boxes, we've got Floodborn Aladdin, Heroic Outlaw and Tiana, Celebrating Princess (who'll you recognise from the Rise of the Floodborn Starter Decks!) So, if you're running a Tiana & Merlin Starter Deck why not represent with these matching accessories? But that's not all, if your favourite Disney character has yet to feature on accessories but you need to protect your deck, you can pick up a pack of Disney Lorcana Card Back sleeves! These feature the branding of Lorcana card backs, meaning you can be totally neutral and even have your whole collection match!
But that's not all...portfolios are returning! By popular demand, we're seeing the return of portfolios and they have had quite the makeover! What originally held only 4 cards per page, accommodating only 64 standard-sized cards and 8 over-sized cards, has been upgraded to a 9-Pocket! These portfolios will hold a whopping 252 cards, with 9 cards per page! The artwork on these accessories will feature artwork from Nicholas Kole on the front and back; Simba, Maleficent, Aladdin, Mickey, Moana and Cruella. You'll have seen these characters on the First Chapter Starter Decks! Alternatively, much like the newly introduced sleeves, you can grab a pretty neutral portfolio designed to look like the back of your Lorcana cards!
Tumblr media
Disney Villainous: Introduction to Evil
The final item revealed from Ravensburger was an update to new copies of Disney Villainous: Introduction to Evil. First introduced in 2023 as a limited Disney100 offering, Disney Villainous: Introduction to Evil reintroduces some of the franchise’s first Disney Villains – Maleficent, Captain Hook, Ursula, and Prince John – with a reduced price point, beginner-friendly video resources and “remastered” gameplay based off both fan feedback and the Ravensburger team’s learnings while developing the Disney Villainous system.
Anyone who purchases a new copy of this game, or picks it up for the first time, will receive a special-edition foil version of a new Shimmering Skies card; Prince John! These copies will be indicated with an identifying sticker on the front, so they'll be easy to spot in hobby stores.
Wow. Just wow. These reveals have been nothing but exciting, and we are so excited to start collecting everything from Shimmering Skies! Check out the visuals for everything that was dropped by Ravensburger this evening down below, and keep an eye out for pre-orders going live! Disney Lorcana: Shimmering Skies releases in hobby stores on August 9th and then online on August 23rd.

3 Hot Culinary Pop-Ups Not To Miss
New Post has been published on https://perfectirishgifts.com/3-hot-culinary-pop-ups-not-to-miss/
3 Hot Culinary Pop-Ups Not To Miss
Employees Only will check into Maui.
Culinary pop-ups allow restaurants to get creative. They get to test out different dishes, techniques and audiences, and willing diners get to be a part of the whole process. Acclaimed spots — from an NYC cocktail bar to a San Francisco fine-dining restaurant — are bringing these vibrant events to Forbes Travel Guide-rated hotels from Hawaii to Los Cabos to entice locals and traveling foodies craving a taste of something different.
Whether you want to treat yourself to an epic epicurean experience or prefer to gift one to someone special for the holidays, these upcoming pop-ups are a treat.
Employees Only at Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort
Hidden behind a psychic’s New York City storefront lies a cocktail institution. Employees Only isn’t merely a local icon — the 2004 bar was a pioneer in the now-ubiquitous global craft cocktail movement. To understand its heft, Employees Only is the only bar to land a spot in every World’s 50 Best Bars list since the coveted recognition began.
Soon the white-chef-jacket-clad bartenders will leave their West Village speakeasy and bring their shakers and bar spoons to Grand Wailea in Maui, just after Hawaii recently reopened to mainland travelers. Their December 27 to 29 Hawaiian stint is part of the hotel’s Culinary & Cocktail Collaborations, a pop-up series that provides guests with classes and exceptional dining experiences with renowned mixologists and chefs.
“We are thrilled to welcome guests back to Grand Wailea with our interactive pop-up series,” says JP Oliver, the hotel’s managing director. “Employees Only’s highly acclaimed cocktails and industry knowledge are the perfect inaugural partner to commence this incredible guest experience.”
The visiting bartenders will curate a menu of about 10 cocktails at Grand Wailea’s open-air Botero Lounge. You can expect to sip Employees Only staples like the Amelia (vodka, fresh lemon, elderflower liqueur and blackberry puree) and Besos Calientes (blanco tequila, fresh lime, EO grapefruit cordial, habanero shrub and garnished with pink peppercorns and charred rosemary), and the drinks will have locally sourced ingredients.
Take the opportunity to join the tipple trailblazers’ interactive mixology masterclass. It will cover the four major spirits (whiskey, brandy, rum and gin) along with the history of the American cocktail. Reservations are not required.
If you can’t make it to the three-day pop-up, you can still sample Employees Only’s talents. The bartenders will leave a cocktail inspired by Hawaii’s tropical flair and island setting on the Botero Lounge menu as a parting gift.
Try eggplant and caviar with baladi bread at this pop-up.
The Restaurant at Meadowood at Ojai Valley Inn
September’s Glass Fire engulfed 67,484 acres in Napa and Sonoma, including The Restaurant at Meadowood. It burned down the esteemed Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star restaurant at Meadowood Napa Valley. But the foodie favorite beloved for its imaginative dishes and artistry is rising from the ashes with a winter pop-up at Ojai Valley Inn.
“While planned well before the Glass Fire that devastated The Restaurant at Meadowood, our time in Ojai will serve as an opportunity for the TRAM team to continue to cook and work together,” says Meadowood chef Christopher Kostow. “We look forward to crafting menus that encompass the divergent terroir of the valleys of Napa and Ojai, and to sharing our work with a new audience.”
The Restaurant at Meadowood Winter Residency will take place January 6 to February 28, 2021, at The Farmhouse, a 30,000-square-foot indoor-outdoor culinary facility that debuted in 2019.
Kostow and his team will offer a taste of The Restaurant at Meadowood’s bucket-list-worthy parade of plates at Ojai with six courses spotlighting California ingredients that thrive in winter. The produce was sourced from The Restaurant’s own 3.5-acre farm as well as artisans and growers in Napa and Ojai. The meal will be accompanied by wines from Napa, Sonoma, Santa Barbara, and the Central Coast. The intimate but socially distant dinners will occur Wednesdays to Sundays.
“This culinary residency is very special for our team as the design inspiration for The Farmhouse began with a trip to Meadowood, where we met with chef Kostow and architects Howard Backen and Silvia Nobili to develop the Farmhouse concept,” says Chris Kandziora, general manager of Ojai Valley Inn. “It is an honor to welcome The Restaurant at Meadowood and provide a place for their team to continue their culinary brilliance as they plan to rebuild.”
Xavier Salomon and Dominique Crenn are cooking up a pop-up.
Atelier Crenn at Montage Los Cabos
To celebrate renowned San Francisco restaurant Atelier Crenn’s 10th anniversary, co-owner and master chef Dominique Crenn will come to Montage Los Cabos for Casa Crenn, a one-of-a-kind intimate pop-up.
The epicurean event kicks off January 21 — the date the Five-Star French restaurant opened a decade ago — and unfolds across 12 days with a series of dinners, cocktail parties and other delicious activities. Crenn will be joined by Atelier Crenn chef pâtissier Juan Contreras (who was born in Mexico) and Montage Los Cabos’ executive chef Xavier Salomon, along with only 16 guests in one of the hotel’s luxurious Casa villas.
The highlight will be the 10-course menu of Atelier Crenn’s signature dishes using local Baja ingredients along with wine pairings. During the cozy dinner, there will be plenty of opportunities to mingle with Crenn and the other chefs. You will leave with a signed copy of the menu and an autographed apron.
For an even more exclusive experience, opt for the over-the-top $250,000 package, which includes flying your travel bubble to the Los Cabos hotel via private jet, airport transfers, three nights in one of the five-bedroom Casas, a private tequila tasting, four spa treatments, daily breakfast prepared by a resort chef in your villa and, the pièce de resistance, a private dinner with Crenn on January 22.
Casa Crenn is the latest offering from Montage to help build its reputation as a culinary destination. The hotel launched a similar series in 2019 — one event drew a slate of Maîtres Cuisiniers de France and the other featured Southeast Asian American chefs — but this is the first that focuses on a single toque.

Jess and Kevin’s wedding at Olowalu Plantation Estate
Reflecting on their Hawaii destination wedding, Jess and Kevin “recall how perfect everything was from that first moment arriving at Olowalu, to the flowers, the music, the weather, our wonderful friends and family, food — everything was absolutely perfect.” Not to mention bright, cheery and filled with playful nods to the tropical locale. We’re especially loving the punchy blue and coral color palette, pineapple motif and local Ululani’s Shaved Ice for desert. The all-star team planner Maui’s Angels  and florist Damselfly Designs put together a day filled with memorable details and photographer Wendy Laurel was on hand to capture it all.
What made the wedding special and unique?
Our wedding was completely customized and hand-picked to what we wanted. We are big foodies and wanted to make sure we chose the best appetizers, drinks, food, and dessert. We were so happy to Ululani Shave ice and mini pies from Leodas; our guests also loved this!
Tell us about the gown and where/how you found it!
I brought a small entourage of family members and one of my bridesmaids to help me pick out my dress. I have always loved bling and sparkle but didn’t want something too heavy since we knew we’d be having a beach wedding. I found THE dress during my first visit to a local wedding dress boutique. I customized it by adding on more elegance/bling with a belt and tailored it to have a slight mermaid fit.
What were some touches added to make the wedding personal?
Sadly my grandma had passed away one week prior to our wedding. Growing up my grandma and I were very close as she helped to raise me while my mom was working. Of course I wanted her to still be a part of the wedding so I had borrowed my grandma’s ring from my mom and had it tied to my bouquet. When we tied it to the bouquet, our florist Damselfly had made sure to ask my mom and I to tie the ring to my bouquet together — it was truly a very special moment for us.
We also loved that we had Marvin Tevaga perform during our wedding. We chose songs that were very close to our hearts — Kevin walked down the aisle to Beegee’s “How Deep is Your Love”, which is the song his parents walked down the aisle to, and I walked down to “Here Comes the Sun” by The Beatles, the song that Kevin played while we watched the sunrise at Haleakala (our first vacation together to Maui). Marvin absolutely has the voice of an angel!
Lastly, we chose some of our favorite Hawaiian dishes to notate our table names rather than using the traditional numbers.
What was the most memorable part of the day?
The simple answer is everything — we look back on our special day frequently and just recall how perfect everything was from that first moment arriving at Olowalu, to the flowers, the music, the weather, our wonderful friends and family, food — everything was absolutely perfect for us.
Tell us how you met and became engaged.
Kevin and I met towards the end of our undergraduate years through a mutual friend (the best man). We developed a close friendship but I was already in a long-term relationship with someone. When that relationship finally ended, Kevin did the swoop and charmed his way into my life. Kevin supported me through the hardships of veterinary school and when I graduated we finally no longer had to have a long-distance relationship. Our relationship grew stronger through our continuous love and support for one another. After about 4 years of dating, Kevin proposed to me at the restaurant where we had our first date — the restaurant was decorated with photos of us through our years together that were tied onto balloons. I thought I was going out to have drinks with his sister and was so shocked at what was going on, but of course I said yes. I also always told Kevin that if/when he proposed, I wanted to make sure my nails were done for all the photos to come so he brought a bottle of nail polish to the restaurant too!

World’s Top Restaurants Recognized by TripAdvisor
TripAdvisor® announced the winners of its Travelers’ Choice® awards for the best fine dining restaurants around the world. This year’s awards recognize nearly 400 fine dining restaurants, including the Top 25 in the World, plus dedicated lists for Asia, Europe, India, Canada, Mexico, Australia, South America, South Pacific, the U.K. and the U.S. Award winners were determined using an algorithm that took into account the quantity and quality of reviews for restaurants around the world, gathered over a 12-month period.
“Whether celebrating a special occasion or simply looking for a culinary discovery, travelers can rely on these Travelers’ Choice restaurants to serve up delectable meals and unforgettable moments,” said Brooke Ferencsik, senior director of communications for TripAdvisor.
Top 10 Fine Dining Restaurants in the U.S.
1.      Daniel – New York City, New York
Daniel Boulud’s flagship restaurant is the shining star of an empire that spans four countries. Both the setting and the cuisine are a signature blend of old-world and modern sensibilities. “Just magical. A sense of privacy, peace and intimacy. The extra small touches and care for customers kept coming as the night unfolded,” raved a TripAdvisor reviewer.
2.      Victoria & Albert’s – Orlando, Florida
Executive Chef Scott Hunnel and Chef de Cuisine Aimee Riverapreside over a wonderful world of cuisine featuring ingredients from far and wide in a classic setting. “There are not enough superlatives to describe the Chef’s Table, the most incredible ride at Disney World,” a TripAdvisor user praised. “It would be a major bucket list event for any foodie.”
3.      Charleston Grill – Charleston, South Carolina
Pure, Lush, Southern and Cosmopolitan are the four sections of the menu created by chef Michelle Weaver. Diners can stick to one or try them all. Experimentation is a proud Charleston Grill tradition. “They get everything right: beautiful, soothing ambiance; wonderful live jazz, extraordinary service and an exceptional, creative menu. The Chef clearly loves food,” complimented a TripAdvisor reviewer.
4.      Alinea – Chicago, Illinois
Alinea is the high theater of modern American cuisine. Chef Grant Achatz deconstructs, reconstructs and defines the form by putting flavor and fresh ingredients first. “Food is truly art at Alinea,” declared a TripAdvisor reviewer. “The courses went from excellent to mind-blowing and finished with laughter and amusement.”
5.      Chef and the Farmer – Kinston, North Carolina
Farm-fresh ingredients and an appreciation for culture and tradition draw local and visiting gourmands and viewers of PBS’s A Chef’s Life to this small-town restaurant. Neither the restaurant nor chef Vivian Howard disappoint, even for a TripAdvisor reviewer who “drove 200 miles each way.” Chef and the Farmer serves traditional “Southern food in inventive new ways, using locally sourced ingredients. It was everything we hoped it would be.”
6.      Halls Chophouse – Charleston, South Carolina
Lowcountry cuisine meets top-of-the-line beef at Halls, one of America’s premier steakhouses. Halls Chophouse is family-run, with an emphasis on hospitality. “Halls is where you go in Charleston when you want an amazing steak in a great atmosphere with wonderful service,” explained a TripAdvisor user. “The owner is present and sincerely happy to please you. This is the best of Charleston.”
7.      Geronimo – Santa Fe, New Mexico
A perfect match of setting and food, Geronimo is an elegant 18th-century hacienda serving a “global eclectic” menu that changes with the seasons. Chef Sllin Cruz inherited and has burnished Geronimo’s reputation as New Mexico’s best. “Geronimo is not a place you go to in Santa Fe, it’s the reason you go to Santa Fe,” a TripAdvisor reviewer enthused. “Delicious food, fantastic service, great atmosphere and warm hospitality.”
8.      Mama’s Fish House – Paia, Hawaii
Mama’s Fish House has been a Maui must for more than 40 years, known for a changing daily menu inspired by the catch of the day. The vintage island atmosphere is contrasted by the freshest seafood and local ingredients. “Book ahead,” advised a TripAdvisor reviewer. “Because this place is fabulous. A lush open-air restaurant with soothing ambiance, view of the ocean through a terrace of palm trees, terrific cocktails and memorable food.”
9.      Restaurant Gary Danko – San Francisco, California
Classic French cooking meets California flair at Restaurant Gary Danko, where dining becomes interactive art. “The food is remarkable and the service attentive. But what truly sets the restaurant apart is its creative approach to how diners order,” explained a TripAdvisor reviewer. “You can choose three, four or five courses from a menu divided into five categories. But in a nod to flexibility, you can choose an item from any category for any course.”
10.  Merriman’s – Kapalua, Hawaii
Chef Peter Merriman has championed the farm-to-table concept inHawaii for more than 25 years and is a pioneer of Hawaii Regional Cuisine. Bountiful local ingredients flavor the food, and stunning views enhance the experience. “Not sure which is better – the view, the atmosphere or the food. Go early,” recommended a TripAdvisor reviewer. “Enjoy a few cocktails on the deck as the sun dips into the horizon, a wonderful mood setter for what will be a truly wonderful evening.”

Snapchat’s New Context Cards Can Make a Reservation with OpenTable
Snapchat has introduced Context Cards, an exciting new way to learn more and take actions on many of the Snaps you see in the app, including Snaps taken at restaurants with the help of OpenTable. By simply swiping up on yummy looking Snaps that say “more,” diners can discover and book a restaurant reservation at any one of the tens of thousands of restaurants on OpenTable in the United States and Canada.
Snapchat’s Context Cards display information about the Snap you’re viewing and provide a way to take simple actions — like reserving a table through OpenTable. Snapchat has also integrated Stories into Context Cards, making it easy to see more Snaps from eateries that interest you.
“In partnership with Snapchat for their new Context Cards feature, we’re excited to be offering a new way for Snapchatters to book any of our restaurants that they see in Snaps,” said Catherine Porter, Senior Vice President of Strategy and Business Development at OpenTable. “We know the simple act of swiping up on a Snap to reserve a table will provide an experience that our diners and restaurants will love.”
Yext for Food Debuts
Yext, Inc. launched Yext for Food, top photo, to help restaurants better attract and serve diners. Yext for Food enables restaurants, bars, and cafes to appear in search results, not only for general searches like restaurant name or cuisine type, but also for specific menu items and attributes. For example, with Yext for Food, a Mexican restaurant can appear when a nearby diner performs the search, “tacos near me.”
A Yext blind study found that 83 percent of consumers read a restaurant menu online before deciding where to eat.
“Diners are searching for specific food items and details about restaurants, and that’s fundamentally changing the game for restaurants all around the world,” said Marc Ferrentino, Chief Strategy Officer of Yext. “We built Yext for Food to put restaurants in control in this highly competitive climate, so they can be found when diners search for a menu item like ‘chicken parmesan’, or for an attribute like ‘outdoor seating.'”
Restaurant visits are declining year over year in the United States, and restaurants worldwide are adapting to online ordering and changing consumer behavior. The digitization of this traditional brick-and-mortar industry creates new opportunities for restaurants to be discoverable for specific menu items when hungry diners search online. In fact, a Yext blind study found that 83 percent of consumers read a restaurant menu online before deciding where to eat, and restaurants that stand out with rich details about their locations and menu items attract more business–in fact, over 76 percent of diners are more likely to choose a restaurant with in-depth attribute information available, like price range, dress code, and meals served. And with over 67 percent of diners considering three or more options before deciding where to eat, the search landscape for restaurants is extremely competitive.
Starting today, restaurants using Yext can:
Publish menu details across the digital ecosystem. Restaurants can control and feed in their menu data to Google, Yelp, Facebook, Bing, Foursquare, AllMenus, delivery.com, MenuPages, and more, making them discoverable for the specific dishes they serve in more places and across more types of searches that diners perform.
Sync more information from the Yext Knowledge Manager to new food search platforms. Postmates, Zomato, delivery.com, MenuPix, and Slice are now part of the Yext PowerListings® Network, allowing restaurants to control their information across more resources that consumers use to decide where to eat.
Manage new types of restaurant details. Restaurants can now label themselves with attributes like price range, meals served, attire, happy hour specials, and more in the Yext Knowledge Engine, and publish those details throughout intelligent search.
Kickstarting the launch of Yext for Food, Yext has hired veteran food service technology expert Lee Zucker as Head of Industry for Food Service. Zucker was previously Vice President of Sales and Restaurant Partnerships at food tech startup Slice, and Director of Enterprise Sales at SinglePlatform.
“Restaurants are fundamentally different from any other industry for two reasons: volume and immediacy. People eat three meals a day, which translates to food being the most-searched-for business category, and they tend to search within minutes of wanting to actually visit or order from a restaurant,” said Zucker. “I’m proud to join Yext to provide restaurants with the tools to adapt to and compete for digital-native diners, and today’s announcement is just the beginning.”
“Yext for Food is about empowering restaurants to be there; to be front and center when hungry customers know what they want to eat, but not where to get it,” added Ferrentino. “For the first time, food service businesses will be able to control menus and other crucial restaurant information all across the internet from one place–The Yext Knowledge Engine–so they can spend more time doing what they do best: serving great food.”
JBF Partners with Reserve
The James Beard Foundation (JBF), is partnering with Reserve to benefit guests in gaining access to coveted seats at the James Beard House by enhancing the overall digital booking experience. Guests can now book using Reserve for dinners taking place at the Beard House as of November 1.
“Partnering with a cutting-edge technology company to help streamline James Beard House reservations was key to our decision to partner with Reserve,” said Kris Moon, vice president of the James Beard Foundation. “Reserve’s user-friendly features and functionalities will provide members and non-members alike with an easy-to-use platform for booking seats while increasing the Foundation’s operational efficiency behind the scenes of the booking process.”
Since its launch in 2015, Reserve has seated over 24 million diners in all 50 states for 800-plus restaurants including some of the most buzz-worthy establishments. With more than 200 unique dinners a year in the heart of Greenwich Village, the Beard House will gain the ability to optimize seating and better understand its diners by using the Reserve system, allowing participants to enjoy an exceptional dining experience.
“Bringing new technology to such a revered institution as the Beard House is a great indication that things are changing in the restaurant technology space,” said Greg Hong, chief executive officer of Reserve. “Our partnership will enable the Foundation to better oversee floor management and reporting capabilities, as well as provide chefs with information that will enable them to understand their guests more efficiently and comprehensively—ultimately leading to a better dining experience.”
By using Reserve, the James Beard Foundation will bring more benefits to chefs that extend beyond the experience of cooking at the Beard House. This includes providing pre-event reporting so chefs can understand the diners to the extent they would in their own restaurants. Reserve, whose clients also include Blue Hill at Stone Barns, Carbone, Cúrate, Frontera Grill, Lord Stanley, Manresa, Mission Chinese Food, Russ & Daughters, and the Fabio Trabocchi Group, among others, will also allow the Foundation to provide online early access to members of JBF for seats at sought-after Beard House dinners.
Three Chefs Achieve ACF Certified Master Chef
After an exciting display of culinary expertise, Gerald Ford, CMC, Joseph Leonardi, CMC, and Shawn Loving, CMC, were named to the prestigious group of culinarians known as Certified Master Chefs® (CMCs®) by the American Culinary Federation (ACF). The ACF Certified Master Chef designation is the highest level of professional certification that a chef can receive in the United States. The 2017 exam took place Sept. 30-Oct. 7 at Schoolcraft College in Livonia, Michigan.
“The American Culinary Federation is proud to honor our 2017 class of Certified Master Chefs,” said ACF National President Stafford DeCambra, CEC, CCE, CCA, AAC. “The skill, creativity and discipline called for by the exam are considerable, and the experience gained is invaluable to the chefs themselves and to the culinarians they mentor. We are inspired by their commitment to the culinary arts and congratulate them on an extraordinary achievement.”
The newly certified chefs traveled from across the U.S. to test their culinary mettle.
Gerald Ford, CMC, winner of the Les Amis d’Escoffier competition in 2010 and former executive chef of Château Robert in Montgaillard, France, is executive sous chef at The Everglades Club in Palm Beach, Florida.
Joseph Leonardi, CMC, captain of the silver medal-winning 2012 ACF Culinary Team USA and 2009 U.S.A.’s Chef of the Year, is director of culinary operations at The Country Club in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts.
Shawn Loving, CMC, CCA, is culinary arts department chair at Schoolcraft College. A seasoned culinary competitor, he also served as executive chef for the U.S. men’s and women’s Olympic basketball teams in Beijing and Rio de Janeiro.
The path to the CMC title requires immense dedication to the craft of cooking and calls upon the candidates to demonstrate their abilities across a broad range of styles and techniques. During the progressive, eight-day practical exam, chefs are tested on healthy cooking, buffet catering, classical cuisine, freestyle cooking, global cuisine, baking and pastry, Continental and Northern European cuisines and “market basket,” a mystery basket of ingredients from which they must prepare a five-course meal.
Chefs are evaluated and assessed by current CMCs and earn points based on kitchen skills, presentation and taste, as well as on the leadership they demonstrate in working with a student apprentice each day. Candidates are required to maintain a 75-point average in order to continue.
“A lot of time, dedication and sacrifice went into the CMC exam and it all paid off. I’m delighted that I proved to myself that I’m able to do it,” said Joseph Leonardi, CMC.
“I had to be sure I was prepared mentally and needed to believe in myself. I felt confident in my skills and ability because chefs train every day. At the end of the day, it’s just cooking at the highest level.”
Chefs Ford, Leonardi and Loving received their certifications after successfully completing nearly 90 hours of culinary demonstration throughout exam. With the addition of these chefs, there are now 68 current CMCs in the United States.
“The ACF Certified Master Chef designation is a journey of culinary excellence,” said Ron DeSantis, CMC, AAC, MBA, and CMC exam evaluator. “Regardless of the outcome of the exam, each chef becomes a better and stronger culinarian. Having been part of the ACF CMC exam for more than 25 years, I am proud that the chefs of our nation have the outstanding craftsmanship required of this level of certification.”
CMC and CMPC are the culmination of the progressive ACF credentials that enable foodservice professionals to certify their skill, knowledge and expertise at each stage of their careers.
