synopsis; in which, he finally realises his feelings, and it takes him seven days to make her his.

DAY 1, 05.06.2012

He was always there.

The second she’d step foot out of the house, his figure gracefully flooded her vision. A white jacket decorated with cyan strips hugging his torso a bit too tightly. Chocolate brown hair that perpetually defied gravity in the best way possible. Soft green eyes that might have been plucked from olive trees. And the signature loving frown etched into his lips.

This morning ritual has become as familiar as sunrise. Him against a stray streetlight outside her house. Him leaning in closer to listen to the hum of her voice as they walk to their schools. Him offering to hold her bag for her. Little things that made their world.

“y’know, you look like you haven’t slept a twink” he said, her bag slung over his shoulder in a lazy manner that did something to her heart.

“why thank you, iwa, that’s very reassuring,” she rolled her eyes.

“you can always text me if you can’t sleep,” he muttered, a sudden blush taking over his cheeks. They’ve now reached the street in which they part their way.

she looked up to him, a smile decorating her face. “you’re gonna regret offering that,”

“sure I will,” he grinned, handing her the bag.

“I’ve never seen an in love iwa,” sighed oikawa dreamily. “You’re growing up,” he teased, earning a snicker from Mattsun, who had his pockets stuffed in his hands. Iwaizumi was pulling his sleeves upwards, in preparation for a life threatening kick targeted at oikawa, a vein popping out of his head.

“I think you should ask her out,” he heard makki say, but every other sound dissipated into the air when he set eyes on her figure. It felt like he’d ran a marathon. His heart was getting a bit louder, and his palms became sweatier.

It was almost unreal, the effect she had on him. Almost unhealthy. He gulps, his eyes her figure in a distance. His friends thought he almost grew heart eyes. It might have been true, his eyes almost changed colour from this soft, light green to a darker one, pigmented with a soft emerald of a spring meadow.

A hand pushed his shoulder forward, and he snapped his head to the culprit. Mattsun.

“Go,”

Iwaizumi cocked an eyebrow.

“Go walk her home,” he added. The rest muttered in some sort of agreement and began walking away, leaving iwaizumi standing alone. His eyes snapped back to her figure, she was finally closer.

The moment she set her eyes on him, shooting stars bloomed through her, her eyes obtaining a sparkle of some sorts. She ran to where he was standing.

“iwa!” she exclaimed, standing right beside him, shoulders almost touching.

“hey,” he mumbled, almost stuttered.

“I thought you’re gonna be late today?”

“practice was cancelled,”

She hummed in response as they began walking once again. Her mouth kept moving, words about her day spilling out. But the only thing he could focus on was the electrocuting sensation he got with every occasional shoulder bump he received from her. He thought he’d gone deaf, blood rushing to the tips of his ears.

It was that day. The 8th of June, 2012. The day he realised he was in love with her.

DAY 5, 09.06.2012

DAY 6, 10.06.2012

It started getting a bit out of hand.

The way his heart raced. The way he yearned to see her every second of the day. He started getting off practice early, sometimes even skipping practice. Meeting her everyday with his hands curling into nervous fists hidden in the pockets of his jacket.

He told her he’s going to be late today. He lied. He couldn’t wait, so he excused himself from practice.

But today, she wasn’t alone. His mouth went dry and he felt a pang of dread and a stab of unease send direct blows to his beating heart.

A grey haired figure stood beside her. Her bag flung on his shoulder. Her breathes in sync with his. Her eyes crinkling into a happy smile. He wished he stayed in practice.

His feet grew a mind of their own, and started walking in hurried steps. He hoped she didn’t see him. Maybe he’s lying. He hoped she saw him. And maybe ran to him. And maybe flung her hands around his neck. And maybe, just maybe, kissed his lips with her sweet ones.

He went home and forced himself into sleep, not wanting his mind to recall a single memory from today.

DAY 7, 11.06.2012

He wasn’t able to sleep last night.

His brain treacherously betrayed him, replaying the way her eyes crinkled and a soft laugh escaped her lips like a broken record player.

A bouquet of flowers hid behind his back, palms sweaty and sticky. He didn’t want to think about what’s going to happen if she said no. His heart was in a state of turmoil. The adrenaline of the unknown clashing with crippling anxiety creating a mixture of naked disorder sheltering in the chambers of his heart.

He was sat on a bench. It’s rich brown colour were faded into a sad shade of beige. His leg was bouncing with anxiety and a series of what if’s. What if she doesn’t like him. What if she’s dating the grey haired guy. What if what if what if. It was the domino’s effect. One question bloomed another till his mind was flooded and his heart nowhere to be seen.

“Haji,” he heard a melodious, almost angelic voice call. It was hers. He abruptly stood up, knees weakening a little in the process. He turned so that he’s facing her, his hand behind his back.

She cocked an eyebrow. “Is everything okay?”

Iwaizumi didn’t bother responding. He just shoved the flowers with trembling fingers, the flowers practically exploding into her face. His cheeks were decorated by a slight burn of embarrassment and nervousness.

“Huh-“

“Go out with me,” he interrupted.

She blinked at him, arms cradling the flowers. One blink. Two blinks. His heart was out of this world, ears on fire. His mind spiralled into a never ending stream of doubt.

“Okay…” she replied, stretching the O and the Kay, and adding a tone of questioning at the end.

“Okay?” he repeated.

“I’ll go out with you,”

Now he blinked. Three times, to be exact. “Oh,”

“What, did you want me to say no?”

He shook his head. “No—I’m just…you like me?”

“Did you hit your head?”

Maybe he did, he wanted to say. “Shut up,” he mumbled, head turning away from her to hide the flush tattooed on his cheeks.

The flowers he’s gotten her were red tulips. Velvet petals kissed by sunlight at the dawn of day. A hopeful reminder of the passion to be blooming between them, creating red strings of fate that’ll follow both their figures even if they ended up on opposite sides of the world.

You could hear everyone packing up the things as you opened the door to the large auditorium where your anatomy class was held. The zippers being brought up and down, the shuffling of papers, the snaps of laptops and iPad covers, the chatter that exploded across the students. It was all a bit overwhelming, the frazzled state your run to the classroom after showering and changing left you in didn't help.

You made your way down to the front, bumping shoulders and arms with the mass of people heading out. It was exhausting, you wondered if Matsukawa had left already, or if he had left halfway through the class even. Makki did say he never came to class, that's why his text surprised you. You ignored the warmth that settled in your chest.

He probably left, he was nowhere to be seen as you went down the stairs, looking over the heads that got up and out. Until you saw up front, in his soft black hoodie, clear-framed glasses on his nose as he talked with the professor, blue and white backpack— that seemed awfully empty— slung over one shoulder. He stayed...

"Ah miss y/l, where were you today hm?" Your professor smiled as you got close, stopping right next to Mattsun, who tried his best to hide the surprised look on his face, as if he didn't think you would come at all. The older man smiled at you, the corners of his eyes wrinkling "It's so unlike you not to be here"

"I'm sorry, professor. I had a small accident this morning—” Matsukawa's face grew red, "and I was unable to make it in time." You bowed slightly in apology, heat rising to your cheeks as you caught a glimpse of Mattsun's embarrassed expression.

"Don't worry, I trust Matsukawa here will be able to aid you in catching up” the older man said with a wink, a small content smile pulling at the corners of his lips as he made his way towards the back exit of the classroom, his briefcase in hand. 

“You came to class?” You finally caught Matsukawa’s gaze, his eyes locking into yours. He scrambled to tear his glasses off his face and stuffed them inside the pocket of his hoodie.

“Yeah, I felt really bad-“ you chuckled, looking away now praying the heat you felt on your cheeks wasn’t visible “Makki said you never miss class, I didn’t want to be the reason why you fell behind I guess”

It was his turn to look away now, his fingers fidgeting with the strap of his bag. 

“Thank you, but you didn’t need to go through the trouble-“ you said but he shook his head, giving you the notebook that you didn’t notice he had been holding onto, “you took notes?”

“Yeah here- also I’m aware my handwriting can be a bit… well an illegible monstrosity is what Makki calls it- so I asked Professor Minamoto for the powerpoint-” you raised your eyebrows in surprise. You took the notebook from his hands, holding it close to your chest.

“Did he give it to you? He never lets anyone have it, it’s a constant struggle” 

“I mean it was a pretty awkward conversation since he hasn’t seen my face since the first week but-“ the both of you chuckled, you hadn’t even known you were in the same class until Hanamaki mentioned it this morning “I explained to him you had an accident and well, after he saw my sorry excuse of handwriting he sent it to me so I could pass it over…” his hand came up to scratch the back of his head, a sheepish smile on his face and you couldn’t help but gawk at him. 

You didn't know why you only seemed to notice now, the short messy strands of hair that were itching to curl, the silver hoops that hugged his ears, one on each lobe, and one on the top cartilage on the left, the curve of his bicep as he moved his arm. You cursed at yourself.

“I can’t believe he let you have it oh my god- I can’t thank you enough Matsukawa-”

“Mattsun- you really can just call me Mattsun-” his lips formed a shy smile as your own stretched wider, a breathless laugh leaving them in excitement.

“Thank you Mattsun,” even though you had already called him it once, under the influence and the neon of the club lights, he couldn't help but feel a shiver run down his spine again. Even under the harsh fluorescent classroom lighting, even with the still slightly winded look to you after running through campus, he still thought you looked beautiful. 

He was going to drag Makki into a lake while he slept. 

“Do you- I mean, are you doing anything later?” Matsukawa’s eyes widened as he realized what he had said. He thought it, but he didn’t really mean to say it. He could feel the panic spike in his chest and his palms get clammy. He gripped his backpack strap tightly and followed behind you as you nodded towards the stairs to leave.

“Well I gotta run and meet Noya- he’s getting his nose pierced or something, and then I have a three-hour chem lab, but” you bit the inside of your cheek, fighting the smile that threatened to break out “Would you maybe want to sit with me at the studio tomorrow? If you’re free around noon?” You could feel your heart beat rapidly in your chest, your eyes locked into his chocolate brown ones as you stopped at the top of the stairs.

“The studio?”

“Yeah- I host a show Thursdays at noon, for the campus radio station-”

“We have a radio station?” you laughed as you nodded at his question, announcing the name and the unforgettable slogan as the two of you continued to laugh. You stared at the red that dusted his cheeks again. “I’d love to though- go with you I mean, I just don’t have a clue where it is-”

“That’s fine, I’ll text you yeah?” You started walking through the door, his gaze didn't wave from your face, not as you went up the stairs or through the door. It remained on you even when you stopped in the hallway outside. You looked up at him again, “see you at 12-”

“Yeah- see you” His words were quiet and breathless. He was going to kill Makki.
