Far From the Madding Crowd and the fascinating Gabriel Oak.
"When Farmer Oak smiled, the corners of his mouth spread till they were within an unimportant distance of his ears, his eyes were reduced to chinks, and diverging wrinkles appeared round them, extending upon his countenance like the rays in a rudimentary sketch of the rising sun."
"In his face one might notice that many of the hues and curves of youth had tarried on to manhood: there even remained in his remoter crannies some relics of the boy. His height and breadth would have been sufficient to make his presence imposing, had they been exhibited with due consideration. But there is a way some men have, rural and urban alike, for which the mind is more responsible than flesh and sinew: it is a way of curtailing their dimensions by their manner of showing them. And from a quiet modesty that would have become a vestal which seemed continually to impress upon him that he had no great claim on the world’s room. Oak walked unassumingly and with a faintly perceptible bend, yet distinct from a bowing of the shoulders. This may be said to be a defect in an individual if he depends for his valuation more upon his appearance than upon his capacity to wear well, which Oak did not."
There is something unique about Thomas Hardy's description of Gabriel Oak in Far From the Madding Crowd. Something unique for a romantic hero in the Victorian period and even today. He is described as an element of nature and so ethereal. Quiet modesty? Vestal? More concerned with mind than flesh? Society has indoctrinated us to believe that these are desirable feminine virtues, but they never are for men. It is enough to see what kind of masculine archetype has been successful in recent years (Fifty Shades, After, 365 DNI...): Domineering, abusive, manipulative, dangerous, sexually uncontrolled and amoral men. What is surprising about Gabriel Oak (who has a name very consistent with his personality) is that Bathsheba in the beginning, due to inexperience, believes he is too simple, without artifice and not very exciting. Her maturity shows that there is something glorious about his strength, reliability, honesty and self-respect, which makes her love him slowly without herself being aware of it until the end. Hardy tells us that when someone loses everything like Gabriel does, it can lead a man to evil or the sublime, the latter being the path that shepherd Oak chooses and not without suffering. During the novel Bathsheba wants more and more his company because she starts to admire his non-destructive strength. Gabriel loves her so much and because he loves her he doesn't want her for himself, he wants her happy (even if it means seeing her married to another man or that she doesn't recognize his value as a farm manager), that makes him an indispensable confidant and, according to Bathsheba herself, "the only true friendship she had ever owned". In Bathsheba's most vulnerable moments he never manipulates her, but encourages her to continue to act correctly and to have the strength and resilience she already has without losing her self-respect on the way. I would love for more readers to get to know and admire this character and for him to penetrate more into pop culture, because he represents an archetype of masculinity unfortunately very rare: this amalgam of sweetness, patience, tenacity, loyalty and a non-oppressive force, which is not fueled by the destruction of the free will of the beloved woman, but on the contrary is fueled by the return of her will to live.
P.S.: You may or may not like the latest movie adaptation of 2015, but no one can deny that Matthias Schoenaerts was able to understand all these nuances of Gabriel's personality and portrayed it perfectly.

All right, I got tagged by @blacksuitofdoom (tysm—these are great!) in one of those fun games we all love on here!
1. Who is your idol? Idk... honestly I don’t have one. I never have.
2. If you could travel ANYWHERE in the world, where would you go? Probably specific locations in Britain, Germany, Austria, Poland, and Russia. Hit all the stops where my favorite writers lived.
3. What decorates the walls of your room? Nothing, actually—the singular item on there is a corkboard jam-packed full of letters, necklaces/charms, my writing, poetry, artwork, collages, maos I’ve drawn for my writing, and some pictures of Loki/Tom Hiddleston.
4. Favourite colour combination? Forest green and gold/deep royal blue with silver and mahogany.
5. What’s on the top of your bucket list? Hmm... seeing as I honestly Do Not Have a bucket list I can’t say. But of all the things I’d Really Love To Do be a traditionally published author is at the top.
6. Height? 5’2
7. Favourite Animal? Horses and Irish Setters.
8. What’s the last song you listened to? Instrumental-wise: Crossroads by Abel Korzeniowski. Lyrical? Fade Away by Tommee Proffitt ft Ruelle.
9. Last movie you saw in theaters? Avengers: End Game. I know, I don’t get out much.
10. Comfort food/favourite food? Comfort: cookies of any variety or danishes. Favourite: salmon (cooked and marinated in a pan using butter, garlic, and Italian seasoning) with steamed lightly salted or cheesy broccoli (or French green beans) and fluffy white rice.
11. Book you’re currently reading? Becoming Mrs. Lewis by Patti Callahan and The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert.
12. Why did the chicken cross the road? Because it was a joke about suicide.
13. Your favourite season and three things about it? I legitimately do not have a favourite season. I love them all. But I think the end of the year is my absolute favourite of the entire year—the Holidays are coming one by one, there are TONNES of family birthdays just right on top of each other. The weather breaking, sweater and scarf and hat days, Christmas lights. It’s wonderful!
14. You are about to get in a fight, what song comes on? Stronger by The Score 😂
15. If you won the lottery tomorrow what’s the first thing you would buy? Property to build on and horses. Also a Lot of Books.
16. What fictional world would you want to live in? Idk, my own, honestly? I know, real pathetic. 😂
17. If you had to learn a completely new language what would it be? Spanish or Arabic. Teutonic languages are always gonna own my soul, however.
18. Do you wear socks to bed? Not a lot. It really depends. But not usually. Only in the wintertime.
19. If you could choose only one celebrity or athlete to make out with, who would it be? Tie between Tom Hiddleston and Matthias Schoenaerts.
20. If you could only watch one movie for the rest of your life, what would it be? A Little Chaos.

Movie Review: The Laundromat
Steven Soderbergh clearly did exactly what he wanted to do with The Laundromat: made an in-your-face, Michael Moore-style movie about the infamous Panama Papers and their revelation that, surprise surprise, rich people with lots of money make their own rules. The movie is both the story of the crooked company that laundered untold amounts of dough, and a polemic against wealth inequality. It is sobering at times, but as a film is ultimately odd and mostly ineffective.
When he’s not doing multiplex fare like the Ocean’s 11 series, Soderbergh does---well, mostly what he wants. Still, I doubt any studio would have been eager to release this latest work to a cinema, while Netflix would have been most eager to land such a respected name. For their investment, they also get the likes of Meryl Streep, Gary Oldman, Antonio Banderas, James Cromwell and Matthias Schoenaerts. If there’s one thing consistent in Soderbergh’s films, it is that he’s always been able to attract a hell of a cast, and this one has that going for it in spades. Streep is Ellen Martin, a retiree whose husband (Cromwell) is drowned in an accident on board a tour boat. She quickly discovers that she can’t get compensation from the boat company because their insurance is no good, on account of having bought it from a company that is just one of many scams being run by Panamanian firm Mossack Fonseca.
Streep’s scenes, and those of the boat owners (David Schwimmer and Robert Patrick) are mostly inert. Streep is an odd choice to play an ordinary housewife type, and though it is fun to see her berating Russian gangsters, she’s more effectively used in a secondary role in the film (see if you can spot her). The fun stuff gets done by Oldman, Banderas, Schoenaerts and Rosalind Chao, all of whom play criminals. Oldman and Banderas are the narrators of the film, who appear in white suits and often in outlandish settings like sipping cocktails on a beach, and we eventually learn they are Mossack and Fonseca. They angrily defend their actions, with Fonseca pointing out that he tried to work for the downtrodden but there was just no money in it. You gotta feel for the guy, right? Schoenaerts and Chao have a marvelously funny tete a tete as rival mobsters, in a scene that is the highlight of the film. Indeed, when bad people are on screen doing bad things, the film occasionally reaches darkly comedic heights, but it is frequently pulled down again by Soderbergh’s and writer Scott Z. Burns’s preaching.
To be clear, I’m in their camp, and on board with their message: the real criminals, the ones who move the money, get away with murder every day, while us poor schlubs on the street go to prison or the poorhouse if we step even one toe out of line. The problem is that Soderbergh communicates this point by shattering the fourth wall into a thousand little pieces, and you can really only get away with that if you’re working with A-list material. Soderbergh is not. His film can’t decide if it wants to be a working class story about the down-’n-out, a documentary about financial malfeasance (there’s a LOT of complex money-babble that often brings things to a screeching halt) or a dark satire about the excesses of wealth and power. Is it a message whose time is now? Perhaps, bu the vehicle used to deliver it is currently rusting on the curb.
Verdict: Not Recommended

Top 10 Best & Top 5 Worst Films of 2018
1. You Were Never Really Here https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5742374/?ref_=nv_sr_1
An arty revenge film starring one of the worlds best actors as a troubled, stoic man for hire? I was always going to love this. Joaquin Phoenix has never been better. Check it out as soon as you can.
2. Journeyman https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5314118/?ref_=nv_sr_1
I knew nothing about this film going in, other than that it was Paddy Considine’s follow up to Tyrannosaur and that he plays an aging boxer. The rest was a complete surprise. And a very affecting and gut-wrenching surprise at that. Jodie Whittaker as Paddy’s dedicated wife deserves all the awards available for her powerhouse performance.
3. Beast https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5628302/?ref_=nv_sr_5
A naive young girl strikes up an illicit relationship with a local bad boy at the same time as there are a string of disappearances and murders on their small island. Is her new beau involved? Can she ever be sure? A fantastic British psychological drama that steadily ratchets up tension and keeps you guessing until the end.
4. Red Sparrow https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2873282/?ref_=nv_sr_2
Jennifer Lawrence stars as a ballerina recruited by Russian Intelligence during the height of the Cold War. Red Sparrow is a classic thriller, in the sense that it has no CGI, no explosions, no car chases. It’s a proper adult film for grown ups. And in the current environment, that’s something to be applauded. Joel Edgerton, Matthias Schoenaerts and Jeremy Irons round off a quality cast.
5. Phantom Thread https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5776858/?ref_=nv_sr_1
Apparently Daniel Day-Lewis’s final film. And what an appropriate and elegantly crafted swan song. A wonderful comment on obsession, love, relationships and power. Both Day-Lewis’s and director P.T. Anderson’s best since There Will Be Blood over ten years ago.
6. I, Tonya https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5580036/?ref_=nv_sr_1
I was hesitant about I, Tonya as I wasn’t aware of the true story that underpins it and I have no interest in competitive ice skating or any of the cast particularly. However, the movie is put together in such a quirky and entertaining way, driven by a couple of thunderous performances by Margot Robbie and Allison Janey that I knew as soon as I’d finished it that it would have a place on my top ten of the year.
7. Calibre https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6218358/?ref_=nv_sr_1
A hunting trip goes very, very wrong for two twentysomethings in this neat little British thriller. Tense and relentless from the word go. Bringing to mind another underrated classic, Eden Lake. To say anymore would be to spoil it. It’s on Netflix, go watch.
8. The Guilty https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6742252/?ref_=nv_sr_1
Danish film that’s practically a one man show that takes place in only one location – an emergency services call centre, where a man tries to help a kidnapped woman on the other end of the line. A wonderful script, editing and direction keep you glued to the edge of your seat as the story unfolds while we have only our protagonists expressions and reactions to look at. Masterful filmmaking.
9. Searching https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7668870/?ref_=nv_sr_1
The whole film takes place through a computer screen as a father searches his missing daughters laptop for clues to her disappearance. Searching isn't the first film to use this device but it is one of the best. Just as you think you have a handle on what’s happened the film takes another twist. Gripping.
10. Upgrade https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6499752/?ref_=nv_sr_1
A very silly but highly enjoyable B-movie from the co-director of Saw. Following a brutal mugging that leaves him paralysed and his wife dead, Logan Marshall Green is implanted with a microchip that gives him extra special abilities and allows him to track down and exact revenge on the people responsible. A lot better than anyone could expect it to be and well worth your time.
Special mentions: The House That Jack Built, The Favourite, Mandy, Bird Box, Unsane.
And now, on to the stinkers...
1. Annihilation https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2798920/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
In 2014 Alex Garland wrote and directed one of my favourite films of that year, Ex Machina. Annihilation is his follow up to that film. I watched this hating every minute, entertained only by the fact that every time I thought it couldn’t get any worse, it kept getting worse. Everybody involved should be very embarrassed.
2. Between Worlds https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7295450/?ref_=nv_sr_1
Being a Nicolas Cage fan means hat I have sat through some pretty terrible films. But even the worst of them were bearable because of Cage’s crazy charisma and dedication to giving an entertaining performance. However, even I can’t defend Between Worlds.
3. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4881806/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
Jurassic Park is my favourite film of all time. Every sequel since has brought with it diminishing returns. Fallen Kingdom is by a very long way the worst of the lot. I know that the series is about dinosaurs being brought back to life by ‘science’, but even for a series that has that as it’s central premise, this is the dumbest, most ridiculous and frustrating of them all.
4. Avengers: Infinity War https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4154756/?ref_=nv_sr_2
Now, I’ve seen all of the films so far in the MCU. I really like some, most I think are way overrated. But what Infinity War is, is two and a half hours of CGI, explosions and very lazy performances. Most frustratingly, however, is that none of the events that take place hold any weight whatsoever as we can safely assume that everything will be right back on track in the next few films. Rendering Infinity War a complete waste of time.
5. Revenge https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6738136/?ref_=nv_sr_1
Supposedly a pro-feminist revenge film written and directed by a woman. However, what it really is, is one of the most trashy, hateful, offensive, misanthropic pieces of crap I’ve had the misfortune of seeing. Overstylised to the the point of nausea. Men, women, feminists; avoid.
