you may remember that many moons ago (December 2022) Leon posted a friends and family sponcon deal where ashif mawji, someone the oilers do charity work with, left this comment

and instead of deleting the comment, leon eventually deleted the whole post (which as you can see from a quick scroll on his instagram, he doesn’t usually do, even after the deal has expired)

WELL!! it happened again

And I can’t wait to see if he deletes it altogether again :))

can u please explain to those of us not yet enlightened how the caps/pens ship dynamic is different from the sid/ovi ship dynamic? i want to believe, but i need more guidance 🙏

i mean on the surface they are pretty similar (fun-loving underestimated loud rockstar with joie de vivre & grimly-determined wunderkind holding onto need to succeed with a death grip) however the TEAMS offer us a world that's more free. the pens/caps ship dynamic exist within a world inherently made of magic where hockey teams can fall in love. the pens/caps ship dynamics also covers more ground - sure, you've got sid and ovi, but you've also got the entire history of the teams that came before them (pre-2018 successful dynasty team vs cupless franchise -> post-2018 rockstar champs vs unrealized destiny and unmet expectations, which is sort of like if sidclaude -> matthewleon, there's simply so much to work with)

anyway as an aside do you guys think that what geno is to sid/ovi, the flyers would be to pens/caps? inbox is open

i have now watched the handshake line video several more times and while i am compelled by the "they really do dislike each other huh" narrative i wanted to point out that matthew wipes his hand after shaking nuge's hand

and leon managed to touch poor tobias björnfot's hand EVEN LESS than matthew's (so instantaneous the gif ended up being a blink)

he truly is the world's worst loser and i love him dearly

hi! I’m not really sure why so many people ship mattdrai, and I was just wondering what it is about them that you like personally? I’m not usually someone who can see ships unless they have a lot of “canon” content, and I’ve seen them only interact like twice. can you help me see it?

hiiiii anon! i like mattdrai so much because as individuals matthew and leon are veeeery similar. they're two sides of the same "yappy alternate captain who likes to start shit and is obsessed with his quieter captain" coin and from the interactions they have had on the ice it's very clear that they have FUN riling each other up and that kind of dynamic has always been my favorite across all my fandoms.

also, i definitely get where you're coming from with canon content but from a writing and creating stand point it's sooooo fun to not really have anything but their personalities and canon events to work with!

but before i link you to the mattdrai primer, and some of my favorite canon moments, i'm going to say something super insane and say if canon ships are more your speed you should definitely just get into all matthew and his teammates because there's sooooo much good stuff going on in the panthers locker room lmao

anyway, here's a pretty comprehensive primer for their ~lore up to November 2023 and a list of things not mentioned in it but i'm constantly thinking about:

that time leon very gently grabbed matthew by the waist to pull him away from mike smith

(much funnier and compelling behavior because darnell nurse comes in after this and just pulls matthew back by the neck)

2. the way leon is pretty well known for zooming into scrums when connor's involved, but has been known to just stand by and watch while connor and matthew get into it.

3. that time in december 2022 one of the oilers' charity partners chirped matthew in the comments of one of leon's friends & family puma sponcons and instead of deleting the comment, he just deleted the whole post (which, if you scroll through his feed, you know he doesn't delete his sponcon posts lmao)

4. and then of course, my favorite hidden gem, the fact that matthew got some of his game worn jerseys from the 2023 asg signed by all the guys there, and then all the guys from the atlantic team (8:05), so somewhere in matthew's possession he has a jersey he asked leon to sign :')

but as consolation i DO have this deep cut of matthew and connor chatting in the locker room the night of the skills comp

and then of course i assume you've seen, but it's never a bad time to revisit leon's post game interview where he talks about his and matthew's goal and very adamantly and awkwardly asserts that he was just joking and he really hopes everyone know that he was just joking around!!!

the truest gem of this, to me, other than connor minding his own business in the background, is always the "i guess i expected that, i probably would've done the same thing" and all the fidgeting he does when asked about matthew just skating away like bby did not like that

honestly it's not even in a ship way because boa is literally not the same without matthew anymore and I'm pretty sure leon is the one that misses it the most from the oilers

though it IS fun to think about a scenario where they end up together because leon starts even MORE shit with matthew at panthers games, starts antagonizing him on instagram too because he misses the specific thrill of getting matthew to bite back

it came to me in a dream that the reason drai tanked on his accuracy shooting is that he was upset and couldn't focus because of the way matthew was smiling way too much at barky and not paying attention to him also barky did better than him so double L 😭

Leon/Matthew/Quinn is more than just a possibility!! I have a threesome WIP for them sitting around waiting to be finished and I will gladly share the beginning of so more people will join me in my niche little boat!!

“Pretty bold of you to bring your freshly turned mate—”  “His what? We’re not even dating.”  Quinn snorts. “Wolves don’t give a shit about human distinctions like that.” He turns his attention back to Matthew. “You’re playing with fire putting him around this many wolves that know you so soon after the bite.” The glint in Quinn’s eyes and the way he says know get Leon’s hackles up, and the heated look Matthew gives him as he says, “Nothing I can’t handle,” doesn’t do anything to soothe the restlessness building inside him.  Quinn rolls his eyes. “I know you can, but can he?”  “What do you think I’m going to do?” “What we all struggle not to do when someone gets too familiar with what the wolf considers ours.” “Jesus.” Leon blanches. “I don’t think Matthew’s mine.”  Quinn raises an eyebrow, and the way his mouth slants like he’s trying not to laugh makes Leon’s teeth itch, but it’s nothing compared to the growl that rips through him when Quinn steps in close to Matthew and squeezes his hip.  Matthew’s eyes go wide, mouth dropped open a little in surprise and Leon’s cheeks burn, but he can’t seem to stop. Then Quinn slides his hand to the back of Matthew’s neck and Leon stumbles back as he’s hit with the sudden, mortifying urge to to rip Quinn’s throat out.  Quinn grins, sharp and challenging. “Say it again and I might believe you.” “I know he’s not,” Leon bites out.  “Maybe so.” Quinn steps away from Matthew and Leon relaxes instantly, but it’s negated almost immediately when Quinn says, “But like I said, the wolf doesn’t.”

Re: if Matthew was at all stars, I feel like it'd be funny if he was and Quinn picked him, then had to spend the weekend confused as to why Leon keeps glaring at him. (Also if Quinn asks Brady if he sees Leon glaring at him and Brady's just like "oh yeah, Tim said that Leon is angry you picked his boyfriend" and Quinn's like "ohhh sucks to be him bc he's mine this weekend) sorry I just love MatthewLeon and MatthewQuinn

you never have to apologize for talking Matthew/Leon and Matthew/Quinn to me! Those are my BABIES!!! Quinn taunting Leon with his proximity to Matthew while being completely unbothered by Leon’s death glare is one of my favorite things to think about!

technically, this is the all star game in it for keeps takes place and I do think Leon would feel feral about Quinn getting to Matthew first in any verse but especially this one.
