April 22 is Earth Day, an annual international observance to promote environmental protection, having run since 1970. 2024's theme specifically is "Planet vs Plastics".
Which brings us to Barbie.
There is no doubt that Mattel is aware of the issues of environmental protection, climate change and the impact of plastics on the environment. The 2022 Barbie "Career of the Year" was Eco-Leadership.
Tumblr media
These dolls were advertised as being made from recycled plastic (with the fine print noting that this is true only of the bodies, not the heads or hair) and featured Barbie in various eco-themed careers (including what Mattel describes as an "advocate" but to me looks like a "protester").
The dolls are made of "certified CarbonNeutral products", as are some other Barbie products especially those themed around the environment, such as the Jane Goodall Inspiring Women Barbie (also described as being made from 75% recycled plastic, excluding the head, hair and chimpanzee... which you may recognise as being a pretty significant portion of what is available in this release).
Tumblr media
In 2021, Mattel updated their website with a page on sustainability, featuring the tagline "The future of pink is green" and promising that they were "working towards a goal of achieving 100% recycled, recyclable, or bio-based plastic materials in our products and packaging." This page also provides links to a number of dolls in their line they are advertising as being made of recycled products, such as "Barbie Loves the Ocean".
Tumblr media
They promise "more" coming in 2024, but ultimately I don't know if Mattel is really doing all that they can. I recognise that Barbie is a capitalist product i.e. a toy, a toy designed to be sold in as many numbers as possible, made of plastic and packaged in plastic. But if Mattel wants to make sustainability a cornerstone of their brand (which to be clear, I applaud), I wish we were seeing more.

Please reblog! The more vibes the better! (And I think it goes without saying that if you need to specify a particular Barbie or Ken or other being, such as Earring Magic Ken or Weird Barbie) put it in the tags.

with Barbie, Greta Gerwig did what she does best in her movies, which is explicitely show women in genuine, nuanced and complex ways for a broad audience to understand. she is genuine with it! she shows what she knows and understands about the human experience and it HAPPENS to be from a woman's perspective! it won't break the glass ceiling maybe but to me, her work is groundbreaking in the way it allows female characters to just be. to me the lesson that sticks out the most from Barbie is that you get to decide who you are and then you get to just be that person. that's what Lady Bird is about! that's what her Little Women is about! and still, still it's groundbreaking to see girls be themselves and letting them, as characters, have quiet but complete agency over their own choices.

Funny how I never saw anything like this when The Lego Movie came out in 2014… it’s all nuanced, of course, but Barbie 2023 IS NOT the first movie/brand to do this and while this take is valid, I feel like it’s missing a lot.
Where was the concern about brand and advertising and consumerism in 2014?
Funny how it’s concerning now that the brand and toy is something exclusively made for, marketed for, targeted at girls and women.

Propaganda
Katharine Hepburn (Bringing Up Baby, The Philadelphia Story, The African Queen)—(I hope someone else submits real propaganda but just in case they don't:) Cries. Screams. Wails. The woman who singlehandedly made me realize I was bi. A real "do i want to look like her. be her. or be with her.' crisis, where the answer was all three. Holy shit please all three.
Diahann Carroll (Paris Blues, Carmen Jones, Porgy and Bess)— Face of an angel. She had the range. She brought chemistry with every romance she portrayed. She also had a great fashion sense, and was so pretty Mattel made a doll based off of her.
This is round 6 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.
[additional propaganda submitted under the cut.]
Diahann Carroll:
Tumblr media
Another groundbreaking black actress, although she might be better remembered for her television roles. She was also an activist and worked with charities to support women in need.

Katharine Hepburn propaganda:
Tumblr media
I'm sure one million people will submit her as an iconic Hollywood star but that iconicness might lead people to forget just how insanely hot she was like she had it ALL she was skilled she was funny she was smart she was beautiful AND she was likely bisexual
Tumblr media
The single word I would use to explain Katherine Hepburn's appeal is *range*. In her acting career, that meant covering all the ground between lush period dramas and the comedies she did with Carey Grant and Spencer Tracey. In terms of hotness, it meant an uncanny ability to bring anything from a Dietrich-esque androgyny to some of the best Classic Hollywood Glamour you will ever see.
Tumblr media
Katharine hep was so cool. The VIBES, the INDEPENDENCE,,, living life on her own terms.
Tumblr media
she just had this.... bearing to her, this power. she could be funny, even silly (like in bringing up baby) but also so regal and elegant. she was nobody's fool and dear GOD that's so hot
Fancam link
Tumblr media
She’s not only stunningly gorgeous (those eyes that pierce your soul! a jawline you could cut glass with!) but her delivery and physical presence in roles gives off confidence and authority in such a sexy way (truly the biggest dick energy of Old Hollywood). Her fiery energy in The Philadelphia Story? Unmatched.
Tumblr media
God she's. She's so hot y'all. She has the range!!!!! Funny and dramatic and lovely
Tumblr media
She IS the transatlantic accent. Classically gorgeous and such a strong personality.
Tumblr media
She's literally one of the funniest women to ever live! She goes shot for shot with Cary Grant in Philadelphia Story and we damn well love her for it! She's the most annoying creature to ever live in Bringing Up Baby but she's so insane and funny that we simply cannot help but fall in love with her (and root for her to give Grant an aneurysm!)
Tumblr media
i know she's accounted for but i really want to be sure someone has submitted the scene in bringing up baby where she's pretending to be a gangster
youtube
She simply stuns onscreen; you cannot do anything but be captivated by her presence. Also a non-gender-conforming icon and mild tumblr celebrity by virtue of that one picture from The Warrior's Husband (stage play).
Tumblr media
Katharine Hepburn was out here casually changing the lives of young butch lesbians with her gender swag! She wore pants even when people said she shouldn’t, she refused to marry or have kids, and she wore menswear in at LEAST one movie!
Tumblr media
If I start thinking about her face for too long I will cry she is so so hot. Katherine is so charismatic and charming in everything she appears in - watch her adopt a leopard and fall in love with her. Also she has the biggest dick energy ever (she and her pal Lauren Bacall share that accolade). Also had an incredibly long and varied career from screw ball comedies to serious dramas - she’s a queen of the screen and I adore her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Someone's got to mention it, but she's won the most Oscars out of any performer and is largely considered one of the greatest actresses ever. She's got an incredible voice, an incredible presence, and she absolutely steals every scene she's in. She was private person and deemed standoffish and unapproachable, but she was also profoundly concerned for people's rights and was an outspoken supporter of abortion access. Finally, the Katharine Hepburn slacks look is just iconic. I mean look at her.
Tumblr media
This woman. I have been obsessed with her for years. I know the urban legend is a popular one at this point of her walking around set in her underwear when her pants were stolen and she was left with only a skirt, but the pants thing is honestly enough for her to be the hottest in the room in my book. She refused to wear anything else at a time when the public in general and especially the studios did not like that. She was independent, stubborn, and so so very capable. Competency kink anyone? Also, if you want one final way that Katharine's entire life was saying "fuck you" to the establishment, it started young! Her mother took her to suffrage events, and she never got rid of that attitude of justice. I feel like I have barely scratched the surface of all the ways she was such a badass that I'm turning into a rambling mess instead.

It is possible to realize that Barbie presents unrealistic and unhealthy body standards while recognizing that she was made to show girls they could be anything.
Like, Mattel is definitely doing better at trying to represent different body types, but I don't think anyone can say their dolls aren't unrealistically beautiful. That's a problem with our culture in general, not just Barbie.
But she was made so girls could play at being something other than mothers. She has hundreds of careers, many of which were incredibly rare for their time.
If you watch the Challenger documentary on Netflix, there's a scene where a reporter is interviewing Judy Resnik. She was an engineer as well as an astronaut. The interviewer was so fucking condescending.
He asked if men told her "You're too cute to be an astronaut."
He asked if there were discussions about what would happen when men and women went into space together and hypothesized that relationships might develop.
This interview was in 1981. This wasn't seen as a wildly inappropriate way to talk to someone with a PhD who had more scientific experience that him.
Barbie was an astronaut in 1965.
The idea of a woman being an astronaut was laughable to most people, but that was a career Mattel chose to show girls what they could become.

Barbie made her debut in 1959. The way she was sold then is a little different than the way she's sold now. These days, individual Barbies come with their own unique looks & usually some kind of unique function or accessories. You can buy clothes separately, but those looks are still secondary to the expectation of buying a lot of Barbies. Back in the day, you bought the one Barbie and then bought her clothes separately. This is why back then Barbie came with a bunch of friends and always came wearing a swimsuit.
The oft-memed origin story for the classic Barbie is that she was modeled on a German sex doll named Lili, which is only partially true. In the 50s, most dolls available for girls were baby dolls that primed girls for being a wife and mother. Fashion dolls were a thing but they were generally more reserved for adults.
Ruth Handler, who co-founded Mattel with her husband and served as its president from 1945-1973 (#girlboss much?), got the idea of making an adult doll for girls when she'd see her daughters playing with paper dolls. Instead of playing with babies, they chose teen-aged and adult paper dolls and played fantasized versions of adulthood. Then, on a trip to Germany, Ruth saw a Lili doll in a store, and asked her daughters what they'd think of playing with a doll like that. Apparently, they liked the idea.
Lili the doll wasn't an inflatable fuck doll. She was based on a popular comic strip character Lili created by Reinhard Beuthien and published in the Hamburg-based Bild Zeitung. Lili was a buxom gold-digger seducing her way through the wealthy men of post-war West Germany.
Tumblr media
The comic was definitely adult-oriented, and the doll it created was a popular bachelor party gag gift.
The introduction of a doll with breasts did cause *some* controversy, but it was more pearl-clutching rather than tremendous cultural outrage. Barbie was actually an immediate hit. She fit in very well to late 50s ideals of femininity. I've heard it said before that parents liked her because she helped little girls get into the beauty, fashion, and level of grooming that she would need to catch a husband. IDK if that was intentional, but it seems to fit very well.
I don't want to get into whether or not Barbie is this huge feminist icon or not because, well, she's a toy. I think Ruth Handler was an incredibly smart businesswoman who saw a market demand and met it. Barbie is about the power of fantasy and imagination, and anything that people see in her are the things they want to see in her.
In her incredible multitude of careers, she also holds up an impossible and toxic standard of beauty. Mattel has always been very aware of Barbie's image. I'm pretty sure that the reason Mattel hated "Barbie Girl" so much wasn't because it was wink-wink sexual, but because it nailed the popular stereotype of the time that Barbie was this fake, plastic bimbo who was an unhealthy role model for girls (go listen to Aquarium, now!).
youtube
The recent years of Barbie taking on a more empowering, feminist, and diverse lean is because Mattel is simply correcting course and keeping up with the times. Honestly, they've done a very good job of it, but I'm not going to kid myself into thinking they're doing anything other than maximizing profits.
I love me some Barbie but I was always an AG girl, ngl. However, I think Barbie and her cultural context are still incredibly fascinating and worth taking a look at.
