A list of names of people enslaved in the Waterbury, CT area -- While we don't usually associate New England with slavery, Connecticut didn't ban importing slaves until the late 1700s and didn't outlaw slavery until 1848. It struck me on this list how many children are listed without a name, even if they died at age 1 or 2 - an age at which a kid would probably have a name, it just wasn't important to whoever was recording the death because the child was no longer of value to whoever owned him or her. [Waterbury, CT] There was an interactive at the lovely Mattatuck Museum about how people choose where to settle and cities develop. It's wild to think about how a place can develop from several buildings around a common and a bunch of farmland to miles and miles of development sprawled out in the hills around an interstate. The core of the town's beginning is still there - a green surrounded by churches, etc - but so many layers have been added on since.
