Sporting KC Captain Matt Besler pens a letter to fans ahead of the 2017 U.S. Open Cup Final
SKC Nation,
The wait is just about over.
Wednesday night is our biggest match of the season thus far. This is when we have another opportunity to paint the wall. This is when you will remind the country where the best fans in Major League Soccer reside.
As our supporters, you are the lifeblood of this club. You are the energy and the passion that help us find an extra gear when we need it most. On championship nights like these, your screaming and chanting and unwavering belief makes all the difference.
We saw this in the 2012 Open Cup Final, and again in the 2013 MLS Cup, two of the most unforgettable nights of my life.
We also saw this in 2015 when we fought for the Open Cup title away from home. Whether you were watching from your living room, with your friends at a bar, or were fortunate enough to be in Philadelphia on that special night, we felt you.
Wednesday will be no different. We will need you again. You might be at the stadium, at No Other Pub, watching from home or following our social media on the opposite side of the planet, but we will need you locked in for at least 90 minutes — and maybe more. The New York Red Bulls are a great team, and nothing about the match will be easy.
But we’re used to that, aren’t we?
Like each of you, I was a spectator when the team battled down a man for more than 80 minutes against FC Dallas in the quarterfinals — just a few days after our co-owner Neal Patterson passed away. I still get chills thinking about that game — the way the team rallied against the odds and performed so tirelessly, so bravely. But it was only possible because you, the fans, propelled our guys across the finish line.
Somehow, the semifinals against San Jose were just as magical. Together we grinded through adverse periods, survived a few scares and created more than a few chances ourselves. Then came penalty kicks. And we all know what happens in penalty kicks at Children's Mercy Park.
It should be considered an honor to host a Final. Some fan bases never get the chance. But you deserve this honor. You've played such an important role in getting us here. Your pride, loyalty and support make us lucky to be a part of this club. As a proud Kansas Citian, I am humbled to represent my hometown every time I step on the pitch.
Tomorrow night we hope to see you decked in Sporting blue at the Open Cup pep rally in the Power & Light District.
And come Wednesday, let’s do this together, just like we’ve done in the past. Wear your Sporting swag to school or work. Follow your superstitions if you’re superstitious. Rest up throughout the day; it might be a late evening. And by 8 p.m., be ready to chant and cheer and cry and push us to even greater heights.
Together, let's paint the wall.
For the glory of the city,
Matt Besler

🇺🇸⚽️ SPOTLIGHT: On and Off the Field with Matt Besler, Seth Sinovic, and States Soccer
In 2019, football never stops.
Between the barrage of social media content, the prevalence of matchday streams from all corners of the earth, and the temptation of FIFA or Football Manager just a click away, the game absolutely surrounds us—and that’s before even stepping on a pitch.
Few are more attuned to this endless stream of soccer than Matt Besler and Seth Sinovic, who, in addition to anchoring the backline for MLS team Sporting Kansas City, also help run a football lifestyle company called States Soccer.
“People always think about on the field and off the field being two separate things, but they’re really not. Soccer is our life. We are professional soccer players 24/7, not just from 9 o’clock to noon when we’re on the field training,” Besler said.
True to form, Besler and Sinovic joined us after a morning practice to discuss the clothing line they created alongside co-founders Ryan Van Goethen and Daniel Kerley.
They explained how States aims to earn the title of “lifestyle brand” by representing the 24/7 presence the game can have in our lives. To do this, the group aims to engineer technically superior on-field garments “for players, by players” while also crafting off-the-field wear that represents the local fandom and football culture that never seems to take a moment off.
As native Kansas Citians with over 500 combined appearances for MLS team Sporting Kansas City between them, Besler and Sinovic are in a unique position to craft such goods. They are not only club icons, but also nearly-lifelong locals.
“We have a genuine relationship with the people that support us,” Besler said. This link to the fans extends past the stadium walls and into their daily lives in the community. Their clothing is, in many ways, an expression of that, and is built from “pretty much every piece of soccer clothing we’ve ever worn, even when we were kids,” Besler said.
The company’s name is a call-out to American soccer and its marketing frequently touts States’ Kansas City heritage. KC is quickly becoming a soccer hotbed that Van Goethen describes as a place where “you can see the growth of the sport happening before your eyes.”
Passing through the city on our recent travels with the #AudiFCBTour, we would have to agree. KC boasts impressive professional facilities, passionate fans, and broad-based grassroots initiatives (like the Sporting Stars and Stripes Program) that are among the very best in American soccer. In a league where Zlatan, Rooney, and Vela garner so many headlines, the link between team and community appears to be the star of this MLS city more than any one individual player.
It makes sense that this is where a project like States takes flight. Kansas City is the kind of town where two club legends step off the practice field and into the shop, joining two longtime friends to produce game-changing football goods that aim to be proudly representative of domestic soccer culture and true to the idea that the game never stops.
It’s pretty safe to say it doesn’t for Besler and Sinovic.
***
You can check out States Soccer and buy their products on their website.
Huge thank you to Matt, Seth, Ryan, and Daniel for letting us stop by and being so gracious with their time. A massive additional thank you to Megan Armstrong for linking us all together and putting States onto our radar.

Game Commentary: United States VS Panama
I’m back in my country, and MY COUNTRY IS PLAYING.
Gold Cup. Let’s go.
‘01: Omg, weather alerts, staaaaahp breaking into my coverage. It’s sunny here. The storm is going to miss us.
‘04: OH HI, KELYN ROWE, THAT WAS A GOOD TRY. DO THAT AGAIN.
- Yes, Kelyn Rowe is my favorite thing about this match no matter what. Why? BECAUSE HE’S NEW ENGLAND.
‘08: Sometimes Bedoya does the thing, sometimes Bedoya does not do the thing... But, hey, corner kick...
‘09: I do not like this corner kick, Acosta. Do better.
‘14: Is it really a soccer game if Kelyn Rowe doesn’t go crashing into the ground? Well, we won’t have to find out this match...
‘18: Short corners are always lame. But, hey, Acosta is here to play now. I like that.
‘20: Guzan comes off his line to end a Panama chance. The commentators are saying good things about the defense, but I’m not feeling it. Not enough pace.
- Yes, I know. I never think there’s enough pace.
‘23: NICE TACKLE, KELYN. YOU DO NOT SUCK AT DEFENDING OR ANYTHING ELSE.
‘25: KEEP SHOOTING, KELYN! I WANT A GOAL!
‘26: Sooooo what I was saying about defense and pace earlier? Yeah, that. Guzan does well to get his hands to the ball and deflect the shot, though.
- Water break! Stay hydrated, fellas!
‘32: Dom Dwyer wants a goal. I want a goal...
‘34: Brad Guzan is not impressed with the long shot.
‘35: Alejandro Bedoya is not impressed with anything. The close-up on that face has me cracking up.
‘40: C’mon, Acosta, you’ve got to fight more than that...
‘45: Acooooosta. C’moooooon. I so want to believe the hype, man!
‘45+: Matt Besler, you precious thing, that’s the way to do work!
‘45+: Oh, now there’s pushing and shoving. Not cool.
‘45+: Diaz’ shot goes juuuust wide. That’s waaaay too close for comfort, fellas!
- Whew! Halftime...
‘46: OMG, USMNT, get it together on defense, would you?!?!?! Making me nervous is NOT the way to start this half!!!!
‘49: GOOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLL!!!!!!!! DOM DWYER GETS IT!!!!!!!! AND, OH HI, KELYN, I SEE YOU MAKING IT HAPPEN.
‘55: Okay, can we get it together on defense, though? Please? ‘cause Panama has all the momentum right now.
‘59: Aww, damn, there it is. Camargo scores. Panama equalizes.
‘62: Oh, hey, Agudelo’s on! Another Rev. That’s cool.
‘67: DON’T HURT KELYN. HE IS PRECIOUS.
- Also, shaddap, Landon.
‘68: Gyasi Zardes is on for Kelyn, but he managed to walk off, so it doesn’t seem like he’s badly hurt.
‘72: Uh oh. Panama’s got a player being stretchered off.
‘74: He‘s back on now. Glad he‘s okay!
‘75: Agudelo is fast. I’d like him to be fast and making more useful plays, but fast is a good start.
‘76: Besler basically stopped that ball with his armpit. I’m just making an observation here.
‘81: Bedoya is, yet again, unimpressed with everything. No way he was gonna get a penalty call, though.
‘83: College Boy! (I know he‘s not actually in college anymore, but...) He‘s coming on for Bedoya, who looks a little gimpy as he comes off. That’s no good.
‘86: Besler’s gotten better as this game has gone on, but- behaaaaaaave, boys...
‘87: Too much sauce on that cross, College Boy... C’MOOOOON, USA!!!!!
‘90+: Gyasi Zardes keeps trying to make something happen, and it’s just not. Siiiigh.
90+: Uh oh. Acosta’s down. This looks painful.
- Aaaand that’s the game. 1-1. Lots of ups and downs in that one.
