there’s this interview in which gege gets asked how gojo reacted to the whole geto thing, i don’t remember the exact phrasing. but gege answered “he seems to have recovered” and for some reason my brain keeps thinking about that “he seems” part. because gojo is, in my interpretation, acting Like That to cope/distract himself. but for some reason most people can’t see that, so i’m glad you’re able to understand his character so well! i love your takes on him :)

Ahh the "he seems to have recovered" thing... the way i see it, Gojo has recovered in a sense that he accepted the situation and the current state of his friendship with Geto. I feel like Gojo has moved on in practical sense, but not necessarily in emotional sense. What I mean by that is that he maybe is capable of living a fulfilling life without Geto in it, but there is still a strong emotional attachment present (see: Shibuya).

I think that Geto is and always will be important to Gojo, and we can assume that he is the person Gojo considers to be the closest/most precious to him, but I also think that both of them prioritize their ideals over personal relationships. I also assume they know that about each other, which is what still allows them to see each other as friends despite their 'break-up' - bc it was less of a personal betrayal, and more of an ideological difference that tore them apart. IDK, I feel like all that happened didn't really lessen their feelings for each other, although it definitely changed their relationship.

As for acting Like That - I agree, I do think he plays up the cheerfulness and the goofiness, he's probably more serious and calculating than he shows; and I think that a big part of how he acts and how he thinks is strongly influenced by Geto and the unfolding of their relationship. I would love to hear more of your thoughts about him coping/distracting himself, actually, bc I do think it's probably what's happening, at least to some extent. And some people are thinking that he's acting like that bc he's just a dumb fuckboy...... ehhh yikes.

And again: I usually ignore what Gege says in interviews, bc 1) I do not care abt anything that he says that is not present in the text itself, b) since the story is still ongoing he definitely keeps the juiciest stuff to himself or he'd spoil his own story lol

Hi Yun!!!

Three songs for you, listed:

The first one will be Các Bạn Đứng Nghiêm (a collocation in my language, meaning "everybody stand straight"), a punk song by probably the only female-led punk band in Vietnam, Gỗ Lim.

The title/collocation refers to the assembly in Vietnamese (public) schools that happen every Monday morning, in which students gather and line up at the school yard and all before starting their first class. I like the staccato bassline and the lyrics, it describes the lining up process that is so ingrained into Vietnamese students' memories in such a fun way.

The second song is Xẩm Ngược Đời by Empty Spaces (do you listen to Pink Floyd? the group name is a direct reference to one of their songs). The name could be translated as "Absurd Xẩm" (xẩm is one of the old and traditional forms of music in Vietnam).

It's "absurd" because in the song everything normal is flipped upside down: hawks, usually the predator, are now chased and devoured by chickens, or how humans, usually the ones who kill pigs for meat, now have to "lie down and be shaved by pigs". I can picture a very vibrant image of old and rural Vietnamese way of life through the lyrics, which are actually taken from an anonymous vè (a kind of folk poem).

Okay I'm going to be annoying about this song for just another paragraph bear with me-

There was another version of the song made long before the Empty Spaces one, by an artisan named Hà Thị Cầu. I was introduced to the band at a gig I went to back in 2017, and I was mesmerized by the lead guitarist's moves and you can see it in the video I linked.

The third song is Điền Vào Ô Trống (250) by Cá Hồi Hoang. The song name can be translated as "Fill In The Blanks (250)" and the band name as "Wild Salmon". It's one of many contemporary bands in Vietnam and their music is very relaxing and dreamy, kinda soft too.

The first verse goes like: "We're made of skin, and bones, coffee, cigarettes and 250 liters of alcohol." The sentence that follows and is repeated over and over in the song, "còn bao ô trống cho ta điền vào (?)", is tricky, because it can either be translated as "how many blanks are left for us to fill in?" or "there are still so many blanks left for us to fill in" and I think that's so beautiful, I'm kinda a sucker for lyrics with double meanings. One of the later part says "We still got the fragrant, the sweat, the fun, the love and 250 years to shower in the rain". I think the whole song is just one of the songs where you play and just sit there to either think about life or savor the beauty of the song. It's beautiful like that.
