2025 Monthly Topic Poll
As mentioned previously, 2024 is rapidly coming to an end - and that means the end of the 2024 daily posts! Next year, every three months (March, June, Sept, and Dec) I’ll be posting about an MSE topic at least every other day - and it's time to vote on topics! Top four topics will win, unless it's ambiguous, in which case I'll run another poll (or if there's no interest in any of them!)
More explanation for each topic is under the cut:
Acoustics and sound: All about acoustics in materials science, and also the materials science of acoustics, anything from ultrasonic testing to the science of musical instruments.
Atoms: The science of things at the atomic level; electron energy levels, protons, neutrons, isotopes, etc.
*Careers: This one would require input from followers, but would include posting on what kind of careers exist that involve materials science, however directly.
Color: The sources of color in the world around us. Incandescence, color centers, structural color, etc.
Computational materials science: Different techniques and methods of computational materials science
Data: Presenting data, managing data, collecting data, etc.
Elemental groupings: What are the halogens? The refractory elements? Noble metals?
Energy sources: Where are we drawing energy from? What types of solar power exist? What's the status of tidal energy generation?
Integrated circuit (IC) failure analysis: Exactly what it says on the tin, failure analysis of integrated circuits.
Materials maturity levels: Also manufacturing readiness levels; how do we go from testing a new material in the lab to mass production?
Property prefixes and suffixes: Is piezoelectricity the only piezo- property there is? What is the prefix tribo-? How many types of magnetism are there?
Transmission electron microscopy: All about the ins and outs of how transmission electron microscopy works and the different varieties and forms of it.

Post the things you want in your life the most and aspire to have the most.
1) More time for reading
2) Want to see New Zealand someday
3) See Wacken Open Air someday
4) Learn to speak a few more languages
5) Learn to play a fairly obscure folk instrument
Feel free to post what you like. (It could be travelling, entrepreneurship, hobby or adventure or anything in the world) Staying and happiness of family and safety is default. So they are already taken into account.
Was tagged by the lovely @deepesttheoristlady. Don't know too many people so will tag @materialsscienceandengineering as the only other blog I have really interacted with...
#i really don't know many peeps#but if you wanna do one feel free to!#its a really sweet idea#deepesttheoristlady#materialsscienceandengineering#hope everyone is doing well!

Obviously it's not out yet - but is this something the MSE community here on tumblr would be interested in?
Another idea: Communities on Tumblr
For a while now folks have asked us for better ways to connect with other people who share similar interests. We’re listening, and at Labs we’ve been looking into fulfilling that need, Tumblr style.
Introducing Communities, a new place to connect with others on Tumblr:
Here in Labs, we’re working on big ideas that could transform how Tumblr is used, while keeping that Tumblr vibe alive. You can see one of those ideas above. We’re calling it “Communities”, a new dedicated space on Tumblr for people to share and discuss all the content they love. Communities can cover topics like your favorite show, artist, movie, video game, your school, your board game group, friend group, big or small, whatever you want.
Each Community has their own semi-private safer space away from the regular dashboard where you can interact with other Tumblr users who share the same interests and passions as you. There are moderators and members (you!), rules, and privacy settings. Each community has its own feed of posts from members, separate from your Following and For You feeds. Interactions within community spaces stay there and replies will work more like a traditional comment section. Folks will be able to reblog posts into a community, but not out — at least not yet.
We’re very excited for you to try it, and help define the best path forward. What we have is a prototype to help us validate the idea, but there’s still plenty of questions that need answering. Over the next couple of weeks, we’ll be reaching out to people across Tumblr, and the internet at large, to try our prototype. Based on the feedback we get, we’ll iterate on the idea to see what resonates best with all of you on Tumblr.
If this sounds interesting, please like, reblog, or reply to this post, and we’ll invite you to beta test this feature when we roll it out to a wider Tumblr audience, as a little perk for following the Labs blog.
Stay tuned for more!

This is REALLY COOL! Unless I’m missing something obvious, this looks to be an incredibly green, easy to use process. Maybe we’ll start seeing wooden skyscrapers one day! @agendermetalbender and @materialsscienceandengineering might enjoy this article!

@materialsscienceandengineering - Turns out there is a How It’s Made episode describing a very similar process to what I did in research and LANL to make MoS2 transistors. This would’ve come in handy to help illustrate my work…

The end of 2024...
Hello everyone! 2024 is rapidly coming to an end - and that means the end of the 2024 daily posts! I've got an idea for next year, which is every three months (I'm thinking March, June, Sept, and Dec) I'll pick an MSE topic and post about it at least every other day (so, at minimum, ~15 posts a month, likely more if the topic has enough to generate that many posts). I have ideas for topics, but I don't want to post things that you may not be interested in.
Please let me know your thoughts! Whereas the 2024 daily posts were short snippets, these would be longer, more in depth posts on whatever the topic is, and the topics would be fairly specific (like, transmission electron microscopy specifically, instead of materials characterization overall) (i.e., "metals" is too broad a topic). That's why I'm not committing to another 365 posts!
And if you have ideas already, feel free to send a message, an ask, or just reply here!

hey i just want you to know that even if i don't reblog or like a lot from you i still love your blog. it's incredibly reassuring to see so much innovation and inventions when the rest of the world is mostly occupied with the negative aspects of humanity. thank you for running this blog.
Thank you so much! Absolutely no worries here - I'm well aware this is a science blog on 2024 tumblr. Most people that like to follow science blogs (myself included!) just like to absorb the information without reblogging posts onto their non-sciency blogs, which is a perfectly fine way to engage with this blog. There's no right or wrong way to follow me - but thanks for the kind words and checking in!

My attempt at a tumblr community has been approved! I have absolutely no idea how this is going to work, or what functionalities a tumblr community has - this is very much a new thing both for us and for tumblr. As far as I can tell, this'll be one of the early communities and the feature is still in beta testing.
For now, I'm working on sending an invite to those who replied to the original post saying they were interested or liked the original post. Looks like there's a limit of 500 members for the community. Let's see how this thing works out!

Lol what's relatively new about materials science and engineering, hasn't it been around since like the bronze age???
If you're referring to the understanding that different materials have different properties, and people can mix and match compositions and processing methods to achieve those properties, then yeah, materials science is ancient. Metalworking has been around for tens of thousands of years, with extractive metallurgy for several thousand.
But if we're talking about the discipline of study of any/all types of matter across length scales, to relate structure, properties, and processing, then materials science actually came about in the 1940s, with the first materials science department at a university coming about in 1955 at Northwestern University. Before then, there were degrees in metallurgy, and metallurgical engineering, and ceramics engineering, but materials science, as a whole, cohesive field, is still pretty new.
