Canigao Island and Hitoog Cave: Of adventure and mishaps (+Expenses)
One summer afternoon, my friend Danniele and I were bored and were thirsty for a bit of summer adventure. The next evening, we found ourselves lining for a boat ticket from Cebu City to Liloan, Leyte.
The main struggle of this trip really were to find spontaneous people who would push through a trip without proper planning. Luckily, one of our friends lives near Canigao Island and is also bored of her summer life, so together with two others, we were all set!
To be honest, we really struggled on the way there. The barge arrives at Liloan at around 3am, and since our friend knew someone from the barge who would pass by Matalom, we decided to hitch a ride instead. We would then realize that it was a bad idea.
First of all, we didn’t know that reaching our destination would only take less than 30 minutes. We arrived at around 3:30- it was raining and everything was pitch black but for a bakery which light was left on. We found shelter in the form of a noisy metal roof which extended from the bakery. The office opens at around 7am, and I had to accept the fact that we had to wait there for FOUR HOURS, sleep deprived and hungry, along with the countless mosquitoes and mud that splashed onto us every now and then.
So finally morning arrived, and we went straight to the registration area. We paid for entrance, tent space rental and boat fee. After that, we only had to wait for other passengers then we’re good to go!
Upon docking the island, we were greeted by bad news. It’s actually been raining hard in Leyte those past few days and it probably would rain hard that day too. And if that wasn’t enough bad news, I had my period that day as well!! I thought that we chose the worse time for this adventure, but nevertheless, nothing can stop us from enjoying our trip!
(Our pictures are not that nice due to my camera phone and bad lighting so please bear with me!)
We hurriedly set up our tents before rainfall. The waves were a bit strong that day, but at the same time very inviting. We swam during the rain and took pictures during the meager time the sun revealed itself.
That evening the rain just BURST. Water went inside our tents and found its want to our underwear. The wind blew away most of our clothes and we just stayed inside our tents uncomfortably. But when the rain stopped, we got together and just enjoyed the rest of the trip.
The next morning, we left at around 9 am. I found out that their waters would actually turn muddy brown during heavy rain. It was also to our dismay when we visited their caves and springs, their waters werent as clear and blue as they were supposed to be.
Going to Hitoog Cave is another adventure in itself. With so much time left on our hands, we decided to go to one more place in Leyte. We rode this cute motorcycle with a wooden roof, and we were so ignorant since you can’t really find these types of habal-habal in Cebu.
Because of the weather, the shortcut was flooded and therefore blocked. The only way we could get there was to cross a VERY MUDDY FIELD. Don’t get me wrong guys, the mud isn’t the problem, but rather the way. It’s actually such a struggle to cross the field wearing only slippers (or even barefoot). Most of us slipped with mud stains all over. It took us thirty minutes just to get to the destination. It was actually a lot of fun!
As you can see, the waters really weren’t that clear, so if you’re not really a big fan of mud, don’t visit this place during rainy days. After going around the cave, we had to go back to THE SAME PATH. This time, we knew better and took a shorter time going back. It was rough, but if I had to choose whether or not tot take the easy way or the muddy way, I’d definitely pick the muddy way!
We had our dinner at Kiosko. It’s actually a pretty restaurant surrounded with natural springs and a swimming pool. Unfortunately, the waters were muddy brown (again).
The last misadventure we had was the transportation. At around 6pm, no tricycles passed by the place anymore. The area was almost deserted, it was like a scene from a horror movie. Luckily, friendly locals let us ride with them. To be honest, we were scared because the van looked suspicious- black van, tinted windows. We were double guessing, but we were also desperate. The kind locals dropped us a Bato Port, and from there we rode a ferry back to Cebu.
During this trip I learned a lot of things, and I learned that not all my travels ought to be as amazing as I expect them to be. There will always be trials but its all boils down to you and your attitude. Personally, I wished that we visited Leyte on a different day, but I definitely had no regrets. It was a fun experience, but I will definitely come back when the skies are clearer, this time with more wisdom.
HOW TO GET THERE
To Canigao Island:
From Cebu City, we took a ferry to Liloan but it’s more advisable to take the ferry to Bato since it’s nearer to Matalom. Ferry is 350php for a Tourist Class accomodation. From Bato Port, take a tricycle to Matalom Municipal Park (10 php).
Entrance Fee- 40php Pumpboat- 65php back and forth Tent Space- 100php/tent To Hitoog Cave:
From Matalom, take a multicab and ask the driver to drop you off for Hitoog cave (10php), the driver will drop you somewhere along the highway from there hire a motorcycle to take you to Hitoog Cave. I forgot how much we paid for the motorcycle but it’s definitely less than 100php per way.
NOTES AND TIPS:
-Do not leave the ferry right away. You can sleep in the boat even after it has docked. I suggest leaving at around 6:00-7:00AM -CHECK THE WEATHER! The water turns brown during rainy season so it would affect the cave, falls and springs. -Bring your own food and water. They tend to be a bit pricey -Always check your things and don’t leave your trash behind

“Aninipot” A 20 ft tall mangrove that attracts fireflies and fruit bats. Pagatpat Seafood Restaurant is located by the seashore where several century-old mangrove trees are situated called Pagatpat (Tagalog). They have delectable selection of fresh seafood. You can choose on the menu an ala carte or bilao type or more like a boodlefight kind. We ordered our food ala carte in the front desk as well as we selected the crabs, shrimps and shells inside a bucket to be cooked. If they ran out of stock shells, they just harvest the varieties of shells ashore tied in the small boats in the mangrove areas. It takes 20 minutes or more to cooked our food. I added some pork and chicken for me coz’ I am allergic to these crustaceans. I just enjoyed watching Kristine and Eunice consumed their seafood. I really wanted to try the shells but I forgot to bring some anti histamines with me. I might get in trouble and cause my companions panic, lol I just asked them what it taste like. They simply said it taste very shelly, shrimpy and crabby! Bwahahaha Sorry I can’t relate. Anyway, the fried chicken was seasoned and coated well to crisp while the grilled pork belly is bit hard. The price is affordable and a lot cheaper than that of the seafoods we ordered in the baywalk in the other town. All in all the staff and service is moderately good. #FireflyMangrove #MangroveApple #SonneratiaAlba #SonneratiaCaseolaris #Pagatpat #Matalom #Leyte #RoyalBlueDress #RoyalBlue #Shrimp #Crab #Shells #PorkBelly #FriedChicken #francheskadora #binibinisugbu (at Pagatpat Seafood Restaurant) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cfq6oVyL-8XjHrsxok_3Z56hIhxqAjQGjUB63s0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Everyone in the Philippines has been waiting for this season, especially the students (No more class! It’s 3 months vacation! Yehey!). And by now, many are very excited for their out-of-town beach getaways, friends and family alike. Sparkling crystal clear water, shimmering powdery white sand, warm blue skies, jaw-dropping majestic sunrise, postcard-perfect backdrop, and gorgeous beach bummers — Oh! Summer is love, don’t you agree?
Canigao is an islet located in the Philippines, near the municipality of Matalom, Leyte. The area is known for abundant fishing grounds and scenic coral reef areas suitable for diving.
Once known as the fishermen’s sanctuary in the municipality of Matalom, Canigao Island has become a major tourist destination in Eastern Visayas since 2005 and has gained overwhelming popularity recently.
Well, becoming a traveler is not just about setting foot in a new place and taking selfies, but discovering and experiencing the beauty of nature — the essence of travelling, as they say.
Set up a hammock in any of the sturdy trees. Once done, lay down, close your eyes, feel the cool sea breeze, listen to the soothing sound of ocean waves and chirping of migratory birds, and doze off to sleep for a few minutes to rejuvenate your senses. Alternatively, you can get your favorite book and read with the sea breeze on your face. Or, you can just lay down and look at the beautiful surrounding — different types of tree species, clear turquoise water, sparkling white sand, warm skies, rare cloud formation, and so much more.

Gov't work, classes in east Visayas suspended due to ‘Auring’
#PHnews: Gov't work, classes in east Visayas suspended due to ‘Auring’
TACLOBAN CITY – Several local government units in Eastern Visayas have suspended classes and work in the government sector on Monday due to threats of tropical depression “Auring” in the region.
Since Sunday, local authorities have been issuing executive orders as precautionary measures in anticipation of strong winds and heavy rains.
Among the local governments that suspended work and classes are Tacloban City, Jaro, Tanauan, Tolosa, Carigara, Tabontabon, Mahaplag, and Matalom in Leyte; Naval, Almeria, Kawayan, Cabucgayan, Culaba, and Caibiran; Macrohon, Sogod, and Silago in Southern Leyte.
Exempted from work suspension are those involved in the maintenance of peace and order, disaster risk management, health and sanitation, and traffic management.
Local governments have decided to suspend work and classes after the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) raised tropical cyclone wind signal no. 2 in some parts of Leyte and Samar provinces.
It was downgraded to signal no. 1 late Sunday as the weather disturbance weakened from a tropical storm to a tropical depression.
As of 7 a.m., the center of the tropical depression was estimated at 205 kilometers east northeast of Maasin City, Southern Leyte or 85 km. east of Guiuan, Eastern Samar.
It has maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 55kph. It is moving north-northwestward at 20 kph.
The weather bureau warned early Monday that heavy rains brought by "Auring" may trigger flooding in major river systems in the Eastern Visayas region.
In an advisory, PAGASA identified several rivers in six provinces that would likely be affected by the downpour.
These rivers are Sangputan, Palo, Solano, Daguitan, Marabong, Cadacan, Bongquirogon, Salug, Pagbanagaran, Pagsangahan, and Binahaan in Leyte; and Catarman, Bugko, Pambujan, Catubig, Palapag, Mano, and Gamay in Northern Samar.
Other affected rivers are in Oras, Dolores, Ulot, Taft, Borongan, Suribao, Llorente, Balangiga, and Sulat in Eastern Samar; Basey, Silaga, Calbiga, and Jibatan in Samar; Bisay, Himbangan, and Pandan in Southern Leyte; and all river systems in Biliran.
People living in low-lying areas near these river systems have been advised to stay alert for possible flash floods.
Those residing near mountain slopes have been told to watch out for signs of landslides. (PNA)
