Prompt 26: Tangled Webs

Prompt 26: Last - FFxiv Write 2023 Characters: Simon, Esra, J, Andre, Marcel, Valentino.

Another Vampire the Masquerade short: A behind the scenes look at what exactly happened during that Elders meeting. 

“You’re sending them on a wild goose chase.”  Simon narrowed his eyes and leaned back in his chair.  His fingers drummed on the chair arm. “Why?  If they hadn’t come back, I think you know as well as I do how that battle would have gone.  Not in our favour.”

Esra leaned forward, his hands pressed on the top of the conference table.  His gaze burrowed into Simon.  “I’m aware.  Trust me, I’m very much aware.”

The lot of them had been prepared to die in order to give the yacht full of their childer time to get beyond the reach of the Inquisition.  Esra peered around the table at the other faces gathered there.  Most were like him, the upper echelons of the once anarchists of Cascade City.  

J spat out the stir stick he’d been chewing on and shook his head.  “Think I’m with Simon on this one, Esra.  You put a crown on the kid’s head for one. Prince in name if nothing else.”

Marcel exhaled a loud breath and waved a hand dismissively in the air.  “Most kings are kings in name only.  That hardly has significance.”

“Even so,” Andre narrowed his eyes at Marcel then flicked his attention to Esra.  “Simon’s the Prince in truth. I’ll abide by whatever his final decision is, but I believe they shouldn’t stand for punishment for returning like they did.”

“They disobeyed direct orders.”  Esra bit out. “Letting them off scot-free is not going to teach them a damn thing.”

“Neither is sending them back out across the sea chasing after a ghost.”  Simon pointed out.  “My question remains unanswered.  Why, Esra?”

“He thinks out there will be safer for them than staying here.”  Valentino’s voice was eerily calm.  The Prince of Cascade City leaned forward in his high-backed leather chair and smiled at his group of advisors.  “Simon, as my regent, your word is law, but trust me when I tell you that Masozi’s visions are rarely wrong.  They need to end up out there.  Where the elders go to die.”

“Where is Masozi?”  Andre chimed in curiously, a single eyebrow arching upward.

“Better question, where’s the fucking yacht?”  J snorted out a breath and slammed a boot up on the conference table.  He picked his teeth with the chewed stir stick, gaze snapping between people.

“I know I saw Nathaniel doing things he couldn’t.”  Marcel frowned, gaze straying as he considered the battle in the parking lot.  Andre, J, and Esra all hummed out agreements.  

“Same with Sebastien.”

“And Aamir.” J added.

“Rafael as well.” Andre said.  “Like wraiths in the shadows.  So much blood.”

J grinned widely.  “Was a delight.  None of us went home hungry, did we?”

Esra thumped a hand against the table, ending the idle chattering.  “I think we’ve reached a decision then.  No punishment, but they still must make the journey to the Cradle.”

At Esra’s sharp look, Simon nodded.  “Agreed.  Masozi’s vision must be heeded.  Tell them our decision, Esra.”  Simon paused for a moment.  “Marcel?  I want you and J to locate the yacht.  Find out where they left it.  It did cost me a pretty penny to have it built, so if it could be returned, I’d appreciate it.”

The two vampires nodded and rose from the chairs.  J slapped Marcel on the back on the way out of the conference room, already making suggestions on just how they might locate the missing vessel.  Simon’s gaze came back to land on Andre, a faint smile given to the man.  He sighed and forced himself to return the pleasantry.

“You want me to keep tracking the anomaly.”  Andre hazarded a guess.

Simon nodded.  “Yes, report on anything of note.  A methuselah unearthing here isn’t going to bring messages of joy and redemption for our kind or the humans.”

Esra and Andre gathered their things, bowing to the pair left sitting at the conference table.  They disappeared into the night to attend to their tasks.  Valentino reached out to cover Simon’s hand with his own, the smile spreading over his lips slippery looking enough it nearly made Simon’s skin crawl.  

“Remember they aren’t to know the truth of my whereabouts, Simon.  Not a word.  Come by my place later tonight.”  The invitation in Valentino’s voice was evident and he didn’t mean cocktails.

“Of course, my Prince.”  Simon rose and bowed to Valentino, then strode from the conference room himself.  How he hated being the last one alone with the Prince.  A fate he wasn’t about to easily escape in the coming months.

You're an experienced animal writer, and you seem to have a really good grasp on the complicated realm of mixing animal/human moralities and behaviors in writing (such as lion infanticide) But do you have any opinions on how hyena-on-hyena infanticide should be handled with the most care in a story, if it's included? Would it be treated like a tragic inevitable risk since mothers can't enter their cubs den and the cubs don't understand, should it be reserved for unsympathetic characters, etc

I think you're giving me far too much credit there. lol Long post warning! This is not a thing that will be properly explored in Tofauti Sawa, as the hyena siblings featured (Amani and Dumaka, Nakato and Thabo) will not have any mention if they tried to kill each other after birth, if they succeeded and Sahara herself didn't have any siblings. Though I imagine that Nakato and Thabo didn't since I already drew a illustration of them shortly after their birth and things were peaceful. I imagine within my own story, if a hyena mother witnesses her cubs trying to kill each other ( I have seen footage of this happening while the mother is in the burrow), her own actions for it will heavily depend on her personality. ( This also applies to any talk of lion infantcide featured. Even in real life not every situation is the same.) | For example, If Masozi was to give birth to another cub along with Sahara and Sahara started attacking the sibling ( because let's face it, she would), Masozi would put a stop to it because she was excited to be a mom and would want all her offspring to survive. Adira if she had more than one cub that started fighting, wouldn't give a shit. And then you will have random hyena 02948348 that won't intervene because she would want to put all attention on the strongest cub, etc. etc. It just all depends I suppose. I dunno.

One difficult thing about writing this comic is when taking account of animal characters actions when you want them to actually act like the animals they are based off of compared to human morality. It's probably what makes Munirah such a debatable character ( and Gatura to a small extent). Like a stork killing their smallest weakest chick to focus on raising offspring she feels would have a better chance at life and worth using resources will be horrible to us but normal to them. And by that definition people wouldn't want said character to be rooted for in a narrative. Some people may understand from a animal perspective that Munirah would want offspring she feels will be strong and sire them with a male she deems worthy, but from a human perspective you aren't gonna root for her when she throws her own sister under the bus and doesn't give a rat's ass when her new boy toy kills her nieces. And some people already aren't rooting for her due to how she antagonizes Silver before it all went down. The animal morality perspective thing could also be why people tend to give Gatura less grief about killing Malaika and Safi because the reason he did it is the same reason why male lions do it real life ( and zebras...and horses...and a whole lot of animals really), but of course to us- it's horrible. And then there is that whole can of worms about the lionesses eventually mating with the male that killed their previous litter which Alika of course will sooner take a cheese grater to Gatura's di-- I have no idea wtf I am talking about at this point and I am not even sure I even answered your question at this point. I never started this comic trying to teach morals or have a lesson in it, the characters are kind of doing whatever at this point, so I am hardly the person to be asking when it comes to this sort of thing because even I am sweating nervously while typing this. The original draft of this story was actually a lot more darker than what you are getting now but I toned it down over the years if you can actually believe that. lol Ultimately, it's entirely up to you how you choose to portray this in your own story. Or you can take the easier route and not include it at all if it's too difficult to you to actually address in your story without making things complicated from a animal vs human morality standpoint unless there is a direction you are 100% certain you want to go. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I'm just rambling at this point and I feel there might be people who could better discuss this in a much better way than I can, and probably word it better too because I felt I butchered it so hard.

Reference of a character I've had for years that I never made a reference for nor ever properly wrote the lore for.. so here he finally is!

Masozi and his brother hatched under the moonlight together in a hidden clearing. They were found by a group of imps named "The Angels of Death" and quickly recruited, though Masozi's brother ended up not making it long as he suffered with health complications. Masozi, being the only one left was then experimented on by the other group members in order to try to create a perfect solider for their cause, this did not work. In fact, the traumatic experiences Masozi endured in "The Angels of Death" lead to him developing a form of paranoid schizophrenia.

After the mission was successfully completed, the only members still alive were Masozi, Elnur, and Yili. Masozi went on to live in the swamp until he met Núria, who he worked with to help her fulfil her mission, though he had motives of his own. You see, before he met Núria he came in contact with Gael, one of the members of "The Angels of Death" in the afterlife, and began to work for him. Gael and Núria were enemies so he worked as a double agent for Gael, though during their time working together Masozi did genuinely begin to care for Núria.

In their journey together Masozi met Ekendilichukwu and Sohrab, both of whom he fell in love with.

But in the end.. Masozi's fear and admiration of Gael got the better of him as he allowed Gael to use him in one final plot against Núria, eventually leading to his death.

Ozura looked surprised. From the sound of his voice under the helmet he sounded much older. He was probably close to his own age or even younger by the look of him. Looking from the cigar to the man's face he just shrugged.

"I don't think any of us will mind. This place is already polluted to near unbreathable air in some places, so what's a little cigar smoke? I wouldn't smoke it on Masozi's transport though. She won't like it."

“You, psyker. Where is your strike team? And why the actual hell is there still an uprising here? Is the Inquisitor that incompetent?”

Ozura wheels around, not expecting someone to be speaking to him outside of his team. In one hand he has a shard of psychic energy, pulled back and ready to throw. But he stops at the sight of the man. It's an unfamiliar face, although there were a lot of those aboard The Mourning Star, although this one seemed to have some authority. Icy blue eyes blink as he registered the string of questions.

"Well, as you can see, I've been separated from them. Though I doubt they'll have much trouble handling things without me for the moment," he said. Communication has been cut off from them but he could still feel their lives burning bright on this plane. They wouldn't be snuffed out that easily.

"As for the uprising set off by the traitorous captain and the foul fiends of Nurgle you see running around, it's been contained to just Tertium at present. And Inquisitor Grendyl rarely seems to make decisions for the strike teams and leaves them up to a few of the officers, like that idiot Rannick."

With his comms cut off he hoped Explicator Zola or his team wouldn't hear his candid speech. Not that them hearing him stopped him before.

After her failure with Belinda, Dai Tai is even more determined to avoid Mr. Stern, at least for the day. Unfortunately the principal makes a point to seek her out, with a certain idea in mind.

assorted operation corpse flower stuff bc I have a new vision. uhhhh body horror

the initial conceit was an au kenna that got picked up by wolfer in the tancred bastion (en route to a black ship!). he offered them mercy, and more than that, purpose. they started small, as an oracle, and in that they were helpful... until they started hearing a new call in the multitude of voices, and found it so pleasant and welcoming that they happily chased it into oblivion. wolfer feeds them loyalists. eventually grendyl is like hey that thing's got to go and sends rejects at them, and kenna doesn't really understand that all their new visitors are sent there to kill them until like, the climax of the final mission (a special operation like karnak assassination). then they predictably flip the fuck out, panic, and flee their safehouse. the rejects can then track them to the carnival.

the end boss battle would take place in the carnival ampitheatre with kenna forcing the roof closed with daemonic growths, and the rejects having to scamper around to destroy them and allow masozi and borovitch to hit them with missiles and weaken them enough for the rejects to transition to the final phase of the fight, which is just grabbing a harpoon and bringing them down lol.
