The world map of New Super Mario Bros. U is one full, extended map, rather than individual worlds broken up by screen cuts. In addition to making each new world feel more closely connected, this interconnected map also means that  various points can lead back to other sections, making it easier to navigate throughout the map as a whole.

Game: New Super Mario Bros. U

The game was developed long before the Wii U even started development. In an Iwata Asks interview, Masataka Takemoto stated that the team used materials from New Super Mario Bros. Wii. By the time the Wii U GamePad was announced, he considered having four-player cooperative play with an extra player using said GamePad to add blocks.
